Y OF GHANA FLAG
The color RED represents the blood of those who
died in the country’s struggle for independence
The color GOLD stands for the minerals wealth
THE COLOR green symbolizes the rich forest
The BLACK star represents the lone star of African
freedom.
The original flag used by
Ghana was the flag of the
Kingdom of Ashanti. Following
this flag was the flag
of the Gold Coast, which
was used until 1957. A flag
very similar to the design
today – the flag of the Union
of African States – was
used until the early 1960s
before being replaced with
a similar flag which was
used through 1964. The
two flags were very similar,
except the earlier version
featured two black stars
while the next featured
three. The Ghana national
flag of 1964 was in use for
two years and was only
different in color. Instead of
red, yellow and green horizontal
stripes, this version
featured red, yellow and
green stripes. The current
version featuring one black
star was adopted in 1966.
However, some of these Guan languages are influenced
by major languages in Ghana, depending on
where a particular Guang tribe is located. Guans
in the Eastern region include Anum, Boso, Larteh,
Okere, and Kyerepong. Guans in the Volta Region
include Akpafu/Lolobi, Buem, Nkonya, Likpe, Logba,
Amedzofe, etc.
The Dagombas are an ethnic group of northern
Ghana, numbering about 931,000. They inhabit the
Northern Region of Ghana in the sparse savanna
region below the sahelian belt, known as the Sudan.
They speak the Dagbani language which belongs
to the More-Dagbani sub-group of the Gur
languages.
Lutherans, Seventh-Day Adventists, Pentecostals,
chronicled in the New Testament.
10
How Did Christianity Come to Ghana?
In the 15th century the Europeans arrived in the Gold
there were different cultural groups across West African
the Europeans explored and took control of parts of the
country and so did their religion.
Wildlife By: Amia Mason & Malachi Pratt
Ghana covers various habitats,
from wetland lagoons
and saltpans along the Gold
Coast, to tropical Guinea
rainforest in southern Ghana.
It’s land is home and native
to many animals and gastropods.
Including Antelopes
, Zebras, Bush Elephants,
Lions, Mongoose, African
Civets, African Giant Snails,
Patas Monkeys, Hippos, and
Aardvarks.
Many safariland animals’
popularity in Ghana are slowly
declining. The lions and
zebras are becoming very
low. Both are now classified
as endangered species in
Ghana. People have to travel
to remote areas in Ghana
to even get a glimpse of a
zebra. On the other hand,
Ghana’s wetland animals are
living fairly well.
The Bush elephants or the
Savannah elephants are the
largest Earth animal alive.
Their stand-out feature is the
trunk which can lift heavy
things. Their tusks enable
them to dig, put marks, feed
and lift objects. The Elephants
are hunted down for
ivory making them an endangered
species.
African Giant Snails are also
known as the Giant Tiger
Land Snail and Giant Ghana
Snail. They are found only in
West Africa including Ghana.
They can grow up to 18 cm 01
and are predicted to be the
world’s largest land snail.
Due to their large size they
are considered an important
source of protein in Ghana.
Hippos are located in the
Wechiau Sanctuary in Ghana
along the Volta river. Hippopotamus
has a barrel-shaped
