How To? 36
EDITOR’S NOTE
“For last year’s words belong to last year’s language
And next year’s words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning.”
-T. S. Eliot
It is a tumultuous,
momentous occasion, although it may not look like it at the moment.
Somewhere amongst the multitude of machines and servers in this country, rests a program within a
computer. This program took in lakhs of inputs - lakhs of names with lakhs of numbers attached to
them, each representative of over two years of toil and tears that went into creating that number. The
program went about its business, sorted these numbers and names, and chose yours for a destiny of four
years in a hallowed corner of North Delhi.
That simple program led to your gracing with your presence, a pair of sky blue gates that have seen a
lot of people. It has seen students poring over textbooks and glancing repeatedly at their watches, it has
seen teachers jog in after their morning run, it has seen parents with a shine in their eyes that magnifies
on seeing their wards, and it has seen the campus change like the climates passing by. More importantly,
however, it has seen boys and girls walk in, and seen them walk out as men and women, ready to take
on the world and win - comprehensively.
The program assigned you to a world of inspiration and perspiration, of infinite hope and even more
opportunities. This world is unlike anything that school was able to encompass, it’s the platform where
everyone finally gets ready to board their caravan of dreams. There are ups and downs to be encountered,
times where you feel hard done by and times when you feel lucky to be where you are. You will fall
in with other gifts of the program, people that shall forge connections that don’t break over oceans or
lifetimes.
The program asks you to explore, to feel your way around the obstacles that face you and learn to
overcome them, to find objects and thoughts that no one else has found before. The program asks you
to innovate, to conjure up something out of nothing that could help a nobody become a somebody, to
solve problems that require solving. The program asks you to inculcate, to learn the whys and wherefores
of this world and help contribute to them, to know what is to be known and become who you’ve always
wanted to become.
So much awaits you past these hallowed gates, new endings are bringing about new beginnings, and all
of it was borne from a little program in a little machine in the Capital.
It is a tumultuous, momentous occasion, although it may not look like it at the moment.
To introduce to you the moment and its components, to give a glimpse of the where, an explanation
of the how, an introduction to the who and an idea of the when, we have put together a tapestry of
moments in this university and what makes it tick, day in and day out. Dear Fresher, we give you the
39th Edition of DTU Times.
From the desk of the Vice-Chancellor
Prof.
Yogesh Singh
The JEE Mains is not an easy exam to clear, and those who
do are truly gifted. Always attracting the top rankers of
this examination, Delhi Technological University stands
proud today as a leading Institute of higher education. On behalf
of the Faculty, Staff and existing Students of Delhi Technological
University, I extend a warm welcome to our newly admitted students. The journey ahead is full of great
opportunities, and there many things to learn, both inside and outside the classroom.
The previous academic session witnessed yet another successful placement season, with students bagging offers
from the world’s most prestigious companies. The immense hard work of the Training and Placement Cell
deserves all the credit it can get for ensuring that these eminent companies visit the campus not merely for
placements, but for internships as well.
A large number of students from the University also showed their academic guile through exceptional
performances in examinations such as CAT, GMAT, GATE, GRE and UPSC CSE. A number of our students
have been admitted to the best Colleges and Universities of India and the World.
I applaud the entrepreneurial spirit of our young minds, and DTU’s Technology Business Incubator Unit helps
them take the first steps toward turning their radical ideas into reality. The DTU Innovation and Incubation
Foundation has been set up to create a culture of entrepreneurship in the University, and the measure seems to
be sowing the seeds of success already.
DTU has a very strong alumni community, and we are proud of each and every one of our alumni. They have
brought laurels for not just our University, but even the country in itself. I am glad that the alumni have set
wonderful examples, as role models and as brand ambassadors for the University.
DTU is home to an ever-growing research culture, and a number of our faculty and students have been pursuing
groundbreaking research, with papers published in leading scientific journals of the world and presented in
international conferences. DTU also has a number of patents and in the near future, we expect the number of
patents to increase substantially.
I would like to congratulate the team of DTU Times, for their success in creating an informed and enlightened
DTU community. I hope they continue their endeavour to act as a source of information for the students as the
Official Newsletter of the University.
We are proud to start the University School of Management and Entrepreneurship at DTU’s East Delhi Campus,
which will have B.A. (Hons.) Economics, B.B.A. and M.B.A. courses in multiple fields, where classes shall be
The faculty, staff and students of the University worked tirelessly for almost eight decades to build and maintain
the reputation that our University enjoys today. I wish the incoming students and all students currently associated
with the University the very best of luck, and encourage them to continue contributing towards this community
and achieve great success in life.
DTU Times interviewed ARIJIT
BHATTACHARYA, Class of 2017,
who secured 5 th Rank in GATE Exam
in Mechanical Engineering. He is
pursuing his Masters from
IISc, Bangalore.
1. How was your journey after you graduated from college
in 2013? What made you appear for the Civil Services
Examination?
It has been a great learning experience. I decided to go for
Civil Services in my final year and continued my preparation
during my job. It was a well thought out and clear decision,
and I stuck to it. It took some time, but in the end, it has all
been worth it.
2. Ideally, how much time is required for the Preparation
for the Civil Services Examination?
At least one year of studying is required to understand the
requirements of the exam and prepare oneself for it. It took
me four attempts to do the same.
3. Does coaching play a crucial role in preparation?
Coaching has to be a strictly personal decision. It is not
mandatory. In my case, it helped introduce me to the
preparation and showed me the direction in which I should
move. For interview programs and such, mocks are helpful.
4. The UPSC Examination consists of three rounds, namely,
the Preliminary Exam, the Mains Exam and the Interview.
What is the difference in preparation styles for each of
these rounds?
All three stages require a slightly different conditioning. I
suggest that anyone wanting to appear for the exam should
first understand what these stages are about and what is
being tested where. However, the basic course work remains
the same, it is only slight adjustments one needs to effect.
5. We have to choose a particular subject for the Mains
Examination. Which subject do you think engineers should
choose to get an optimum score in the Mains Examination?
Again, a strictly personal choice based on one’s interest.
I chose Political Science because of considerable overlap
with General Studies and a genuine interest in it. All sorts
of optionals have a potential to fetch good marks. To give
you an example, the top 20 ranks this time had optionals
as diverse as Telugu Literature, Public Administration,
Geography, Psychology, Political Science, Mathematics, etc.
UPSC
GATE
1. What inspired you to go for further studies as opposed
to going in for placements?
To call myself an engineer, I feel that the knack of
understanding is important. I realised during my preparation
that I still have to learn a lot in order to pursue my desired
career in research and development.
2. When is the ideal time to start preparing for the
examination?
The more time you have, the merrier it is. Ideally, a year of
coaching followed by self-study and problem-solving are
appropriate for cracking the exam.
3. What difference does stream make in the preparation
technique for the exam?
Mechanical branches usually revolve around the basics,
whereas Electrical branches have a deeper sense of
application. Other branches lie between the 2 extremes.
4. What aspect of your GATE preparation would you
consider the toughest?
The need to stay motivated during the test series, along
with preparing for the semester was the toughest part.
5. Have you applied to any PSUs recruiting through GATE?
Yes, I got selected in HAL and ONGC and I am expecting
positive results from IOCL and NTPC.
6. What role did the college play while achieving this great
feat?
The semester preparation strategy suggested by our
Professors turned out to be helpful and acted like a head
start for the GATE Preparation.
7. During the preparation, any specific recreational activity
that helped you unwind?
Honestly, there was very less time for recreation, but
watching good TV series like Doctor Who, Sherlock and
Dexter was a huge relief.
DTU Times interviewed
ANAND VARDHAN, AIR
7, UPSC Civil Services
Examination, 2016 and
an alumnus of DTU.
1. What was the process of preparation for the
written exam?
For the written half, I decided to seek external
guidance and hence joined Career Launcher for a
1-year weekend course. I devoted all my time solving
the questions given in the class and gave as many
mock test papers as I could.
2. What role does coaching play in MBA exam
preparations?
I believe that to truly ace a subject, one always
needs a guide or a helping hand even if it’s just
to point you in the right direction. Now, it isn’t
compulsory to join coaching, however, doing so has
many advantages like regular class tests, All India
Mock Tests wherein you compete with thousands
of people to know where you stand, quality peers
to provide motivation, and most importantly
knowledgeable teachers who will solve your queries
hand to hand.
The most important thing any coaching institute
does is to familiarize you with the exam pattern not
to mention that their study material will be more
than enough to study and practice for CAT.
3. What is the importance of academic
achievements and extracurricular activities in
getting admission to a good B-School?
Academics always bag the front row seats when
it comes down to getting admission into a good
business school, without a doubt. Extracurricular
activities help but are not necessary when it comes to
the selection into IIMs. Performing well in academics
right from Class 10th to graduation is extremely
important. When it comes to extracurriculars,
people who have excelled outstandingly are
obviously given an upper hand.
4. How many GD and PI rounds did you participate
in, and where?
I got calls from 5 IIMs- Ahmedabad, Lucknow,
Kozhikode, Indore, and Calcutta. All of them had
a Written Ability Test (WAT), which consisted of
writing an essay followed by a Personal Interview of
around 15-20 minutes except for IIM Shillong, which
conducts a GD in place of WAT. The admission
process of IIM A takes place at Hotel Vivanta by Taj,
Dwarka. IIM C conducts PI at Indian Habitat Centre;
IIM L uses their Noida campus. I however only
attended the ones for IIM Ahmedabad, Calcutta,
and Indore.
5. Please share your experiences and takeaways
from the GD and PI rounds.
If there is anything I have learned from my PI
experiences it is that it is extremely important to
have a good grasp on current affairs. Knowing what
is happening around you especially in your country
is the most necessary thing after the course subjects
because maximum questions are based on those.
And always remember, where on hand confidence is
key, the cliche is not. So always try to avoid answers
like ‘better salary’ when asked questions like ‘why
do you want to do an MBA?’
6. Which were the toughest/trickiest questions
you were asked during the PI rounds?
It is no surprise that IIM interviewers tend to throw
the interviewees off balance into a state of mute
bewilderment. During my IIM Ahmedabad interview,
I was asked why was Rohini called Rohini and the
number of districts in Delhi. Similarly, during my
IIM C interview, the panelists asked me to interview
them. Then they asked me detailed questions
regarding economics and finance like the difference
between them, of which I obviously I had no idea
and in the end one of the panelists told me that I
could ask him any question related to economics –
one which I thought he couldn’t answer – and that
then only would they accept me. Later, of course, I
found out, he himself was an economist.
7. What advice would you give students who aspire
to crack CAT and get admission in elite institutions?
Keep yourself updated with the latest current affairs
from the beginning, as you may not get enough time
to grasp the entire year’s news just before the PI.
Do not try to be over smart during the interview.
As the panelists are experienced people and will be
smarter than you.
Think before you speak. After all, anything as you
say can be used by the panelists to ask further
questions based on that.
As for CAT, having a good speed and accuracy is
important than having a good memory. So try to do
calculations mentally.
For the English section, start practicing the unseen
comprehensions as they usually are the most boring
and sadly the largest part of the English section.
Make sure you do as many mock tests as possible
and then try to analyse and rectify the mistakes you
made in that test.
DTU Times interviewed
ASHUTOSH AGGARWAL, who
cleared the Common Aptitude
Test (CAT) with a percentile
of 99.92 and converted the
call for Indian Institute of
Management, Ahmedabad.
1. What drove you to abandon corporate life
and work exclusively toward the cause of rural
electrification?
[Rahul]: I always wanted to do something to
improve the condition of education and health in
India. When I found my classmate Nitin working on
providing basic electricity in villages, I thought of
joining him. We think providing basic electricity can
do wonders in the lives of people and also improve
their overall quality of life. Students can study after
sunset, hospitals can operate for more time as well
as provide better facilities by storing vaccines, blood
samples etc.
2. What was the major motivation behind this
venture?
Close to 1.1 billion people in the world lack access to
electricity and 300 million of this deprived lot live in
India, by far the highest share for any single country.
80 million households rely primarily on sources other
than electricity for their lighting
needs.
5. What are the major technological innovations
you have incorporated into your project?
We wanted to implement something that could track
the performance of the installed micro grid, spot or
predict failures and conduct possible maintenance,
not requiring any one of us to actually go back to
find the issue.
For this reason, TrackSo was born.
TrackSo is a cloud based solar IoT platform that tracks
and controls performance, predict and notify failures
and assist in possible maintenance for any kind of
solar system installed in remote locations, hence,
allowing customers and installation companies to
manage their product’s life cycle.
6. How large has the impact of Free Spirit Green
Labs been?
We are still in a phase where a lot of impact is yet
to be made. We are in process of onboarding all the
major rural micro-grid companies on our remote
monitoring platform TrackSo so they may maintain
their systems effectively.
We deploy our service along with a skill development
program to ensure that the local population has
enough know-how of the systems installed in their
26 • DTU TIMES • MAY - JULY 2017 •
Despite having undergone the process of
electrification, with an exception of two to three
hours, citizens of our villages have no choice but to
spend all their time without electricity.
3. What were the major problems you faced in your
endeavour?
The process of completing our first rural
electrification was long, but be it securing funds or
making our microgrids smart, we have been able to
manage effectively.
All this has helped us immensely in reaching our
current business model.
4. How has your time at DTU (then DCE) helped you
in your venture?
While organising fests or working as placement
co-ordinators, the type of exposure offered by the
college helped us greatly. We learned about time
management and multi-tasking and such experiences
also helped us develop our networking skills.
NITIN SAINI and RAHUL TALREJA, Electrical Engineers from the
Class of 2013, left their corporate jobs to pursue their passion for
rural electrification. Using novel methods, their company Free
Spirit Green Labs has successfully installed solar grids in a village
in Uttar Pradesh. DTU Times interviewed them on their journey and
struggles.
region and would be able to communicate to the
platform easily in case of potential faults. This, in
turn, will generate new income opportunities for
beneficiaries and employment in rural areas.
7. What is your vision of the future?
With our Smart Microgrids, the vision is to create
various self-sustainable microgrids which can
benefit a large population and improve the quality
of life for the people of rural India. With our product
TrackSo, the vision is to reduce the operations and
maintenance cost of India’s 100 GW solar target up
to 50%.
8. What message would you like to give the
students of DTU?
In the initial years of University, take every possible
opportunity seriously, for what you will learn during
these days will help you in the long run. If you think
an idea or a project is good enough, pursue it, for
you will learn a lot in the process of transforming it
into reality.
INTERVIEWS
DTU Times interviewed
Sidharth Raja, Class of 2017,
who is placed in Uber, San
Francisco.
1. Which area in Computer Science excites
you the most and why?
I’m interested in a lot of stuff. Distributed
Systems, Machine Learning and HCI would be
my top 3 picks for areas I want to work on
right now.
2. When did you realise you had a passion for
coding?
I always liked to make stuff, and that
gravitated me towards pursuing engineering.
Programming was one of the few most
accessible things to me in school. I later
went on to become the President of the
Programming Club in my school. Therefore, I
decided to major in CS.
3. Why Uber? What was your best take away
from your internship at Uber?
Uber is working on hard, fascinating and
relevant problems. The potential impact is
huge. So I’m pretty excited about working
there. My best take away from the internship
would be that I got to experience the entire
lifecycle of a feature - conception, design,
drawing up a spec document, getting feedback
from everyone involved, contributing to a
large codebase, testing, going through code
reviews and then seeing it go live. The people
there were super smart too, and discussions
with them were always interesting. It was
great!
4. Throw some light on the selection
procedure. How did you prepare and what
were the challenges that you faced?
I originally applied for an internship role. There
were 2 technical interview rounds and a round
with the hiring manager. The technical rounds
took place via pair coding on Hackerrank and
a phone call. Because of the time difference,
I was doing these interviews at 1 AM at night.
For preparation, I felt I already had strong
fundamentals. I practiced some selected
questions on Leetcode and InterviewBit.
Later, I set up mock interviews with a few of
my friends.
5. What is your final advice to the juniors?
You guys have way more time than you think.
Use it to explore different fields and see what
you like. Don’t just theorize, try to actually
make stuff. Try to maintain a decent CGPA, it’ll
open a lot of doors for you. It’ll be much easier
to you if you want to apply for competitive
research internships or for higher studies. Due
to my GPA, I was actually ineligible to sit for
the first few companies that came to campus
for recruiting interns.
Also, do have an online portfolio to showcase
your work. With Github giving free hosting for
static pages, there’s really nothing stopping
you. It’ll improve your writing skills and put
you into the habit of summarizing your work.
6. What are your plans for the future? Do
you plan on doing another degree or maybe
starting a company?
At this stage of my life, I want to maximize
personal growth and I believe I can do that
at Uber. I wouldn’t rule out studying further
at some point in the future, but certainly not
now. I want to stay as close as I can to cuttingedge
technology.
SIDHARTH RAJA
1. Please educate the readers about the whole
process of getting admitted in HEC Paris.
There are two ways to apply-one directly
through HEC and other through SAI which
consists of 5 Business Schools. I chose the latter
one, submitting my CV, recommendations,
GMAT and TOEFL scores, percentage, pursued
extracurricular activities and internships and
answers to the essay questions initially. This
was followed by a 25-35 minute long interview,
which covered topics like my interests, goals,
current affairs, France etc.
2. What made you choose Management over
other courses?
Proclivity towards Maths and Computer Science
made me pursue Computer Engineering. After
working on several coding projects, I decided
to take up internships in the non-technical field.
This is where I got introduced to management
and found the role of a Business Analyst to be an
interesting one. Having good problem-solving
skills, analytical abilities, algorithmic approach,
this job would make use of my knowledge in
Computer Science and one gained through
MIM as well. Hence, the field of management
and the MIM program was apt for me.
3. How does it feel to be a part of such
prestigious Institute which is the second best
in European Business School Ranking?
I was on cloud nine when I received my admission
acceptance from HEC Paris. Studying there is
a dream come true. I worked hard to maintain
a balance between writing and editing my
essays, bagging a placement offer, preparing
for the interviews and studying my course work
for the end semester examinations. I was really
glad that my efforts bore fruit.
4. What difference does the presence
of extracurricular activities make on the
admission application?
Having good extracurricular activities definitely
boosts up one’s application a lot. The school
wants to see an overall good application and
not just an academically good one. I
was involved with some societies,
did a lot of NGO work. I am a
trained classical dancer and had also taken
part in poetry writing competitions. If one is
interested in pursuing MIM, one should definitely
be involved in few extracurricular activities.
8. One project/internship/activity/position
which sets you different from others?
I believe it is not one but my overall application
along with my interview performance which
had differentiated me. I interned at Lamprell
Energy Dubai, United Bank of India and Larsen
and Toubro, carried out one summer research
project from IIIT-Delhi and 3 other side projects.
I am thankful to my mentor, Prof. Vinod Kumar
for the projects which I had pursued in DTU
under his guidance.
9. When did you start preparing for GMAT?
How did you prepare for the same?
I wanted to submit my application in the first
round of admission as the chances are said to
be higher, that time. Also, it showed that I was
serious about the school and I wanted to be
free from the apprehension of my future after
B. Tech. I took my GMAT Exams in the Summer
Vacations of my Final Year. I used the official
GMAT books and verbal from the Manhattan
series for preparation.
10. Which is your one achievement at DTU that
you cherish most?
I cherish my achievement in developing
the hostel website of our college. It was a
really challenging job which required a lot of
attention. It was tough to balance deadlines
with impending exams but I stayed committed.
Finally, I had to train juniors to take up the
responsibility further after my graduation.
11. What advice would you like to give students
planning to pursue Masters?
Start preparing well in advance for GMAT and
TOEFL, try to maintain 8 CGPA, work in as
many internships as possible, choose good
recommenders, those who know you well and
will present you very well, carry out a few
extracurricular activities, some NGO work
and last but not the least, be focussed
on this goal.
in Management (MIM)
The
Fresher’s Bucketlist
Everything you need to
know about Grade Point
Average (GPA)
-Shruti, 3rd Year, EE
Keeping the students’ interest in mind,
our University introduced the system of
Grade Point Average starting with the
2K15 batch. This essentially means that
your final scores in every semester will be
graded on a scale of 0 to 10.
The first and foremost factor to keep in
mind is that GPA is relative. This implies
that your GPA depends on the scores of
all the students who’ve taken the same
subject as you have. A major advantage of
this system is that students in branches
which are inherently less scoring will now
have a level playing field when it comes to
placements.
Initially, for every subject, a grade
ranging from ‘O’ to ‘P’ is awarded. This
is later converted into its corresponding
numerical value and multiplied with the
credits allotted to the subject in question.
With the new grading system in place,
there’s a strong emphasis on a student’s
day-to-day class performance. Some
subjects have the laboratory component
integrated into them. So the cumulative
grades awarded depend on internal
marks, laboratory performance, mid
semesters and end semesters.
The Hostel Life
Getting a seat in DTU does not make a person as happy as getting a
bed in a hostel room does. The new-found freedom is exhilarating for
sure. This whole year is going to be a learning curve for you.
THINGS TO DO
1. Visit Haunted Lane: Your hostel life is not complete if you
haven’t visited the haunted lane. Ask your seniors for the location
of this haunted lane. Chances are, you may just walk along a shady
road and revel in the joy.
2. Spend time at the OAT: A wonder by day, a beauty by night.
When you are exploring the college in its night glory, the OAT
will be your favourite haunt. Plus the super fast Wifi helps until
you get the LAN cables (Don’t sit in your rooms with Jio sim
cards, explore). Spending endless nights playing FIFA and CS will
be an experience in itself.
3. Explore: This cannot be stressed enough, although your curiosity
will do everything. A hosteller is the only one who doesn’t get lost
in the campus in the beginning because of the incessant exploring.
4. Meet New People: DTU’s hostel is a potpourri of cultures from
all over the country. Interact with hostelers and explore their way
of life. Don’t be scared of meeting any seniors, the experience will
always be pleasant.
DAILY LIFE
-Pratyush Thakur, 2nd Year, COE
-Siddhant Patra, 3rd Year, CE
1. Departmental store: There is a departmental store just outside
which will cater to almost all your needs.
2. Chemist: Enter the street just adjacent to the eating joint
Dahiram and at the end of that street is a chemist shop. Voila!
3. Salon: Cut N’ Care is a good option in Rohini market.
4. G3S Cinema: Head over to your local cinema hall to watch the
latest movies in Rohini.
The Art of
Being a DTUite
-Kripi Badonia, 2nd Year, IT
In the kingdom that is Bawana, DTU is the crowned
king. And like all kings, DTU demands completion of
certain tasks from its subjects, to accept them as its
own. For your first week at DTU, we, the official scribes
to the King, have compiled a list of 5 (not so) arduous
tasks that you must complete to earn the right of being
called a DTUite.
• Be the front passenger on an e-rickshaw, after
succumbing to the “BadliBadliBadli” or “Caw-ledge
Caw-ledge” calls and listen to the multitude of
stories that the E-Rickshaw driver has to offer.
• Discover your new-found (if not, forced) love
for chai-samosa at MechC and Rajma Chawal at
MicMac.
• Make full advantage of the fact that seniors
ALWAYS pay at MechC. (Never let any senior get
away from this.)
• Make sure to attend ALL orientations, and then
figure out which society/team is best for you.
• Imbibe the illustrious DTU lingo successfully – Sir,
Ma’am, GT, BT, Full Power, Chill Scenes.
Lastly, know this place will give some of the best of
seniors and you will make the best of friends within
these walls. So make good choices, stay true to yourself
and fall in love with DTU every day.
Movies to Watch
When in University
-Rohan Mishra, 3rd Year, SE
Movies aren’t apart from life; they are in
continuation with it. It is almost as if the
colours of life only seem real when seen
on a screen, and therefore I am guilty of
escaping to the cinema. While being a
couch potato isn’t advisable, it is almost
therapeutic to lose yourself in a movie,
once in awhile.
What’s called a list of best films here
is an offering of my favorite ones. As
a sleight, I have lumped movies into
triads according to their flavor with
a particular emphasis on including as
many filmmakers as possible. As is the
essence of making a list, it couldn’t
accommodate some of my favorite
filmmakers - Woody Allen, Truffaut and
Wes Anderson to name a few.
If you like these, feel free to dive deeper
into their worlds. Welcome to the
new year, I’m sure you’ve rolled your
sleeves up to get on with your college
life, and here I try to pluck little bits of
continuations.
• The Social Network, Good Will
Hunting
• The Matrix, Rockstar
• Cornetto Trilogy, Her
• The Lobster, Magnolia
• Almost Famous, High Fidelity
• Gangs of Wasseypur, Haider
• Titli, Nightcrawler
Best of Both Worlds
DTU is home to a many among the best sportspersons and teams in the country. However, studying in a University brings the
additional burden of managing your academic life alongside your life in sport. We interviewed a few prominent sportspersons
from the University on how they manage to do the same.
Engineering inherently requires
your to put all your knowledge into
application, to enforce hypotheses in
real life situations. Through the four
years of this course, you will need to
complement your knowledge with
certain languages and software.
Quintessential Software
C++, Java: Powerful, general-purpose,
Object Oriented Programming
languages. At least one language is
necessary for any engineer even if it
doesn’t have to do anything with his/
her profession.
MATLAB: Essential for data
acquisition and mathematical
modelling which makes it an ideal
software to employ when doing
projects.
AutoCAD: Drafting and two
dimensional drawing is used majorly
in Mechanical and Civil branches but
its flexibility allows it to be used for
accurate layouts and architectural
designs. Also with the advancement
of Rapid Prototyping and 3D Printing,
they are becoming more useful as
one can see how exactly their product
looks like in just a few hours.
The Tech you
need to learn in
B.Tech
-Gursifath Bhasin, 3rd Year, IT
- Shivam Jha, 2nd Year, ME
MS Excel: Whatever you do,
whichever line you pick, this software
is a must. And no, I’m not talking
about simple sheets. Learn creating
complex formulas. This would make
your life easier.
LabView: A Graphical Programming
Language, it is very easy to get a hang
of it and is pretty interesting too due
to its GUI. It is particularly useful in
simulation and testing the control
and processing part of a system.
Here are some branch specific
softwares and languages that you will
come across, so better familiarise
yourself soon.
BT - Comsol, Origin, Chembiodraw
CE, ENE - Catia, Pro-E, Solidworks,
ANSYS
COE, IT, SE, MCE - CodeBlocks,
Android
Studio,
Eclipse
Languages: Python,
JavaScript,
Tennis Player
I have been a part of the DTU Cricket Team since the second day of University. Being the
only player from my year it might’ve been difficult to adapt with the team, but our seniors
have been extremely helpful.
Cricket has always been the most important part of my life and I put it ahead of everything.
For me cricket came even before the academics. I once left my supplementary exam for the
IIT Kanpur tour.
I took no specific steps, though; whenever there was a tour calling I put up a message on
the team group and we were all set to go!
My journey in sports began in the first year with the trials for the badminton team. Being
part of a sport in DTU is very exciting. Each sports trip has taught me something, be
it giving a measure of my acumen as a sportsperson or my ability to interact with other
people. Other than that, it keeps my spirit alive, for I have something else to focus on
besides academics.
Balancing academics as well as a passion for sports only sounds hard. If you love your sport
enough, you always find out some space in your schedule to squeeze it in alongside your
academics.
Yakshita Malhotra
Captain
DTU Girls’ Badminton Team
From being called reckless by my first coach to being ranked 667 in U-16, my journey
through tennis has been immensely satisfying.
I have always been taught that studies come first, no matter what other activities one indulges
in. Alongside, it is also true that one doesn’t really have to study everyday at University. All
that is required is effective and judicious time management during examination time. So
while I play to my content for the rest of the year, the fortnight before the exam is dedicated
to studying single-mindedly.
Crescendo: Literature
From Empty Pages to a
Bestseller Shubhi Sareen, 3rd Year, COE
With the first semester, a new chapter of your is life yearning to be written down. The
four years of college represent a set of blank pages. You, being the author possess
the power of transforming those pages into a bestseller. Here are a few tips on
how you can do that -
Network - Before authors come up with their to-be-bestsellers, they are
usually found interacting with fellow writers and publishing houses,
trying to learn from the experienced. The importance of building a strong
network of people, beyond the realms of your class, branch or year must
not be undermined.
Pro Tip: Find the right set of teams and societies matching your interests.
Build your skills - An accomplished writer incorporates a multitude of
writing styles and techniques to make sure that their pieces are an interesting
read. Similarly, a good resume speaks volumes about your skills, and these four
years are the best time to try out new stuff and discover your passion.
Pro Tip: Take things seriously, but don’t drive the fun out of them.
Never neglect the necessities - Good writers have a variety of educational backgrounds, but the ones holding a degree find
it easier to make a mark. Irrespective of the compliance of your interests to your branch, it is always beneficial to maintain a
decent CGPA. Most companies which visit the campus for internships and placements have a minimum cut-off. Focussing on
your CGPA from the first semester itself will save you a lot of sleepless nights towards the end.
Pro Tip: Maintain a balance between curricular and extracurricular activities.
Failing Well
Dear Ms. Mitchell,
Thank you for your persistent visits to our office for the past few
years. We don’t think that your story “Gone With the Wind” will
eventually turn out to be legen-wait for it-dary, not alone some
of the timeless classics the world of literature has ever seen. Your
book puts forth the idea of strong, independent female characters
- which my colleagues found to be very unlikely. I am a huge fan
of Rhett Butler’s moustache. Hopefully, we could retain that in
the edited version.
Well, to sum it up, we are truly grateful that you sought our
services. Feel free to send in anything in the future.
Yours sincerely
XYZ
Editor
-Shreeya Kedia, 3rd year, BT
Margaret Mitchell received 38 rejections, before getting
Gone With the Wind published. Louisa May Alcott was
told to stick to her day job when she approached publishers
with Little Women. Rejection is like a dementor that slowly
creeps into our social system. But the truth is, no one
originates at the mountaintop, and even those born lucky
get a turn on the wheel of misfortune. Anyone with a resume
of accomplishments also has a resume of failures. We human
beings have a rather un-human way of emphasizing the
victory music, the perfect ten or the very smell of perfection.
For the next four years on campus, failure will tend to be
a well-mediated part of your college curriculum. Failing to
reach a class on time, failing to clear an important exam,
failing to answer a question in a viva is all part of the bigger
picture of success. So the next time things don’t go your way,
get up, take the plunge, have a good laugh about it, and
begin again.
Grammy-Winning Music
Computer
You don’t need a Rs. 2,50,000 iMac
Pro to get started. Use the one that
you have. If you’re buying a new PC,
make sure you get the one with the
highest number of cores.
DAW
A computer software which helps
record tracks and provides the
essential effects and plugins needed
for finishing and production of your
music.
-Jessjit Singh, 2nd Year, COE
A very important aspect of Modern Music is often neglected - the knowledge of engineering that goes into it. After a
year of digging out the “secrets of the music industry”, I found the right way to make music at home. Here is a list of
things you need to record, mix and master a song.
Microphone
Used to capture audio, microphones
are usually of two types - Dynamic
Mics and Condenser Mics. The
latter are used in Professional Studio
Recording.
Instruments
You obviously know what these are!
Either use the microphone to record
or plug the instruments directly to
the Interface.
Audio Interface
The key component of the home
studio - an audio interface connects
the instruments to the computer,
ensuring that there is no time lag
between sending and receiving sound
signals.
Headphones/monitors
Used to playback the recordings and
help in the post recording, mixing
and mastering.
These things might leave you frustrated and even take away your precious time and energy, but if you’re passionate
about music, you’ll get through!
How to Stay Awake
In Class
Every student knows that feeling. You come to class with best
intentions, find a seat, take out your notebook and begin listening
attentively to your professor but suddenly, with every word of the
lecture, your eyes are buckling shut. You frantically try to keep them
open but uncontrollable, unfettered and unrestrained drowsiness is
taking over.
Perhaps you didn’t get eight hours of sleep. Does anyone?
Unfortunately, your professor doesn’t see the 4 a.m. snaps of you
banging your head on the keyboard and doesn’t know that the
deconstructive analysis of dank memes might be the last thing you
want to hear about in the morning.
No offense!!
How to Survive a Day in DTU,
Without your Smartphone!
6:45 A.M. You wake up from a nightmare comparable
to an E.D. class, and realise there’s no time to take a
bath.
6:55 A.M. You tie your shoelaces.
6:57 A.M. You pick up your wallet and bag.
7:10 A.M. You run to board the Metro as if it’s the last
train you’d ever be able to catch.
Commandeer a seat in Mech-C
Rush to Mech-C as soon as you can, for it gets crowded
in the blink of an eye. Find a nice seat, judge a variety
of homosapiens with alarming levels of prejudice, and
savour your Vada-Sambar.
-Raunak Kapur 3rd year, EEE
-Shashank Shekhar Jha 2nd year, ECE
Phew! Finally, you are in. A guy and the DMRC never
play well together. Take our word for it, you will never
find a vacant unreserved seat. You walk across to the
doors on the opposite side, look at the warning sign that
says “Do not lean against the doors”, and do exactly
what it forbids. And then, you feel your pockets for that
quintessential source of entertainment… Oh, shoot!
The horror of having to spend 12 odd hours without
your lifesaver is already making you sweat. Do not
worry, for we bring you the guide!
1
2
Try asking (mostly irrelevant) questions and participating in discussion.
Open that last page of your notebook and doodle like your life depends on it (ever heard of dying
of boredom?). By the end of class, you’ll have constructed a detailed depiction of a pirate cat
fighting Godzilla with a pogo stick.
Explore the vast campus
DTU campus is a beauty spread across 164 acres. A
maze of Departments, Labs, Workshops, hangout
spots and what not! Explore it, and get carried away
by the allure it holds.
3
4
5
6
7
8
9
The person sitting next to you would have noticed your mad skills by now, so involve him/her in
an ambitious game of tic-tac-toe or dots.
If your eyes are still red and drenched with slumber, make sure you call the person sitting furthest
from you and ask for a bottle of water, successfully creating commotion and quietly announcing
that you are dehydrated.
Start tapping your feet or your pen, even if it may pester the hell out of your classmates. Your goal
is to survive the lecture, no matter what it takes.
Think about all the things you could have done instead of attending the class and regret the
decision of not placing your faith in your friend’s proxy ability.
Discreetly signal out to everyone nearby that you have created a hotspot and initiated Mini Militia,
only for the battle to be subverted because of that one guy who forgot to turn the volume down.
No matter how fascinating it may be, do not observe the rotations of the fan or the door, hoping
for some seniors to walk in and make an announcement.
Take your friend’s phone on the pretext of seeing his meme collection and change his ringtone to
“Washing powder Nirma” and call him up a while later.
Chill out at the Library
Don’t worry, we are not suggesting that you revise
your notes. After all, we all are of the same breed. The
only place in DTU where the AC is functional is the
Library. You can always sit in the library to beat the
heat.
Interact and Socialise
After years of preparation and hard work you’ve finally
made it here. Meet new people, share your stories, and
listen to theirs. Make this stage of life memorable with
a group of comrades.
Meet our Maggi Baba
Read about him on Quora? No, we won’t tell you
much about the 51 year old legacy he holds. Strike a
conversation. Wondering how to break the ice? Break
a glass, and your work is done.
Grab a copy of DTU Times
Always remember, for phones may come and phones
may go but books stay on forever. (Familiar quote,
right?) The best way to pass time is to pick up a copy
of DTU Times from any of the hotspots, and chill!
10
Slap yourself repeatedly because you have to stay awake till the roll call (which was of course the
sole purpose for all your efforts.)
As our ancestors have rightly said: “Always check your pockets before you leave.”
NEVER FORGET YOUR SMARTPHONE AT HOME
