The Secretary’s Jottings
Good evening everyone. Welcome to Woodstock Park for this Emirates Preliminary round FA
Cup replay.
Our visitors are Pagham from the Southern Combination Football League. Welcome to their
players, officials and supporters and this evenings match officials. The winners of todays tie are
away to Carshalton Athletic or Walton & Hersham on Saturday 2nd September.
I was unable to make the journey on Saturday because of “man flu” which everyone knows is
the worst type of cold you can get! I understand, however, that the match was very hard fought
and even throughout. We expected a tough match against Pagham who have started the season
very well and that’s exactly what we got.
Our last home match was the eagerly awaited tie against Herne Bay who fielded many of our
last season’s development squad in their team plus our last season’s captain, Jono Richardson.
Our 3-0 victory was well deserved and was an excellent all-round performance from all the
squad. Some really good football was played by our newly assembled squad and augurs well
for the future.
We were scheduled tonight to play our Kent Senior Cup match at Faversham. This will now be
played on Tuesday September 5 th .
There were a number of surprising results (to me) in the FA Cup. The biggest was South Park’s
defeat by Haywards Heath (0-2). Carshalton being held at home to Walton Casuals (1-1), Lewes
also held at home (Newhaven 3-3) and Cray Wanderers losing at home to Sevenoaks Town
(2-3) were other surprises. I watched two ties. The first was Sheppey United V Hastings United.
Sheppey had four good chances to score in this match and did not take any of them. Hastings
United scored two quick goals early in the second half to seal the tie. The attendance was 397
which was the 3rd highest of the round. Three ex Brickies featured for Sheppey, Tom Brunt,
Tom Loynes and Hicham Akhazzan.
My second match was Herne Bay V Chessington and Hook United. Chessington and Hook are
one of the lowest ranked teams in the competition being in the Combined Counties League Division
One. Chessington conceded two goals in the first half but scored immediately after the half
time break.
Despite some good play from Chessington they were unable to score again. The difference between
the two teams was another ex-Brickie in Jono Richardson. He caused no end of trouble
in the Chessington penalty area and dominated the Herne Bay penalty area. Without him the
score could have been very different.
Well done to Ashford United, who we play on Bank Holiday Monday, for defeating Redhill (3-1)
after losing their manager and a number of players.
We have a number of brand new but old-style official yellow Chelsea FC shirts for sale
(Samsung sponsor). There are also second-hand Chelsea tops and other used shirts and socks
for sale. Please see me if you are interested. Our own Mitre replica shirts will be available soon.
Next match for us is another trip to Sussex when on Saturday we visit Lewes for a 3:00 PM kick
off.
The Programme Editor
Hello everyone and a welcome to Pagham to Woodstock for their first visit Here.
It was somewhat of an anti climax on Saturday after the fantastic atmosphere the previous
Tuesday when we entertained Herne Bay. The Sittingbourne football was sizzling in that game
and it was a well earned victory for us in front of our biggest crowd this year.
Pagham are a decent side who have now gone 9 games without defeat so we knew it was going
to be tough. It will need all of your brilliant support to spur the players on tonight.
There has already been 1 upset in the cup featuring
a defeat by a Southern Combination Side
(Haywards Heath) of South Park, a club who like
us are unbeaten in their first two league games,
so we wont be taking todays replay lightly!
It was our first coach journey for some time on
Saturday, mainly because of the cost of the
coaches these days and the relatively short distances
that we now mainly do.
Saturdays’ coach cost to us was £695 however
other quotes included an eye watering £995 and
a more reasonable but still expensive £795 so it
was satisfying that we could use our local coach
company at last.
I say at last because during the heady days of
the Southern League I was arranging coaches
for the club then and we used to travel by a certain
Gillingham based company to Salisbury,
Cheltenham, Merthyr, Kings Lynn, Corby, Bath,
Rothwell and many other grounds much further
than we now have to travel. Who remembers the
Steve Davies quizzes and the cakes.
Strangely it never seemed a chore in those
days. I have kept a record of the timings of the
coaches from back then in case we go to any of
those grounds again.
The coach journey back from Pagham was fairly
lively and my ears are still ringing from some of
the attempts at singing! (Only kidding). Incidentally
the coach was a 59 seater and not a 53
seater and unfortunately there was no toilet. The
change of coach was because the scheduled
coach had been run in to the back by a refuse lorry, and damaged!
Lets hope for a good game and a positive result.
Pagham —A Brief History
The club was formed in 1903, starting in the Bognor
& Chichester Football league, and then joining
the West Sussex league.
The club at the end of the 1965–66 season became
champions of the West Sussex league
Premier Division for the first time and repeated
this success two more times in the 1968–69 and
1969–70 seasons. As well as the league success
the club also achieved two Sussex Intermediate
Cup wins.
in 1988–89. The club firmly established itself as a
Division One club subsequently, without reaching
the heights of the late 1980s — the best season
being 1992–93, when Pagham finished as runners-up
to Peacehaven. 2003–04 however, saw
the club finish in the bottom three, with only the
earlier liquidation of St. Leonards sparing them
the drop into Division Two. There was no escape
in 2004–05 however, and a similarly wretched
campaign saw the Lions drop back down into Division
Two.
Before moving to Nyetimber lane the club spent
their first 47 years of existence playing on various
farmers’ fields until they moved onto a field adjoining
the cricket club in Nyetimber Lane in 1950.
A small wooded shed was provided by a local
farmer which served as a changing room until the
club applied to enter the County League in 1970.
Originally there was a cricket-type pavilion erected,
alongside the current breeze block stand
which at the time had no seats. The pavilion and
an old wooden building that served as a bar were
eventually replaced by the current clubhouse,
with dressing rooms behind.
The 1966–67 and 1968–69 season.
After achieving success in the West Sussex
league the club joined Division Two of the Sussex
County League for the 1970–71 campaign, finishing
third in their first three seasons. I
In the 1972–73 season the club played their first
ever FA Cup game drawing 0–0 with Chichester
City, before losing 2–1 in the replay.
In 1978–79 Pagham finished as champions of Division
Two, winning promotion to the top division.
[3] The club finished fourth the following season,
behind champions Chichester City, but lifted the
title in 1980–81 – three points clear of runnersup
Peacehaven & Telscombe, who went on to win
the next two titles.
Just three years later however, Pagham were relegated.
Two third placings followed before the
Division Two championship was lifted for the second
time in 1986–87. Better was to follow over
the next two seasons, with successive Division
One titles, as well as the League Challenge Cup
In what could be viewed as a season of consolidation
after a couple of poor years, 2005–06 saw
the Lions only able to manage 13th place but
2006–07 saw them comfortably return to the top
flight as champions, ten points clear of runnersup
St. Francis Rangers.
Gary Block the manager took the chairmans’ position
full time in 2008/9 however Brent Williams
took over for the latter half of the season.
A new management team came in for the
2010/11 season and Pagham were never out of
the top four. 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons both
ended in top half finishes.
2014/15 season saw a new era at the top with the
present chairman Tony Shea taking over as chairman
and Gary Block returned to mentor the new
manager Jon Tucker.
2015/16 started well for the club, now in the renamed
Southern Combination League, with Corinthian-Casuals
being defeated in the FA, Cup
but form fell away and Tucker left.
From Littlehampton came joint managers Mark
Bennett and Richie Hellens and there was a 6th
place finish.
The 2016/17 season saw the main stay of the
2015/16 team staying. And after a draw in the FA
Cup against Canterbury City Pagham won the
replay. The next round against Dulwich Hamlet
saw the Hamlet run out 3-0 winners.
It was a good season with Pagham finishing 4th,
20 points behind the eventual winners Shoreham.
who were promoted to the Bostik league South
Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round
Pagham 1 Sittingbourne 1, att 124
Match Reports
Sittingbourne were missing Ollie Brown in defence through serving his one match suspension for
the red card received against Chipstead and although Miles Cornwell was named on the bench
his nagging foot injury meant that he didn’t take part in the match.
This was a hard fought draw against a Pagham side that, like Sittingbourne, have started the
season in style and so perhaps a draw was to be expected. The goals came at the start of each
half with Sittingbourne taking the lead inside 4 minutes when Gil Carvahlo’s shot was bloked by a
defender and bounced the following up Mobalaji Dawodu and bounced into the Pagham net.
To Pagham’s credit they responded well and Sittingbourne never reached the heights that they
had in their first two league games so it was always possible that Pagham would get back into
the game.
Chances were few and far between but Pagham’s Joe Kilhams set up what was probably their
best first half chance when he sent in a tempting low drive across the Sittingbourne box but no
one was on hand to take advantage. Pagham continued to press and Calum Overton fired an effort
just wide.
The second half was barely 5 minutes old when Pagham were awarded a penalty and Scott Muffin
sent Darren Hawkes the wrong way to bring the scores level.
Sittingbourne probably shaded the second half but with no reward. They had two good penalty
shouts turned down as they took the game to Pagham and several corners and melees in the Pagham
area, but just couldn’t turn their superiority into goals. Pagham played their part in this second
half as well though and they weren’t afraid of taking long range shots, one of which on 76
Barely a week into the new season with each cog of English football in full function and we already
have plenty of clubs championing the Non-League cause.
Three cases in particular have caught my eye over recent weeks in striking up an affinity between
club and community or club and fanbase.
Leyton Orient, Lewes and Lincoln United have all demonstrated the values that uphold tradition
and a decency which allows their fans to think 'Yes, I am very proud to support this club'.
In Orient's case, it has very much been a matter of relying on past personnel to build for the future
as the club transitions from an 'asset-stripping' chairman in Francesco Becchetti to the renewed
hope forged by the club's Anglo-American co-owners.
Former manager Martin Ling was appointed director of football with a mere 10 players available
for the first team - all under the age of 21 - while Matt Porter, the club's trusted CEO under Barry
Hearn, returned to take a place on the board.
Yet where Porter was one of the first casualties under Becchetti, being asked to leave less than a
month into the Italian's reign, some staff stayed and endured a torrid three years.
The new owners decided to recognise the virtues of their club staff last Saturday by having a
number, which included the kitman, secretary and commercial manager, walk out onto the pitch
before their match against Maidstone United to warm applause from the home faithful.
Echoing Orient's sentiments in ensuring everyone feels valued are Lincoln United who are undertaking
renovation works to their Ashby Avenue home to improve the matchday experience of disabled
supporters.
By no means a quick fix, the Whites plans will take a full 18 months to complete and the club's
chairman hopes the initiative will kick-start a nationwide drive to address issues facing disabled
supporters.
With the outdated trains in service across the country, the problems for many disabled fans can
start well before they've reached any football stadium.
United's work will ensure supporters have quick and easy access to toilets and their view for the
afternoon or evening, while keeping supporters a part of the atmosphere.
Bostik League South Lewes showed no split parity when announcing their newly-adopted policy
of paying their men's and women's team equally back in July.
This is an instance of Non-League taking the lead when others are willing to drag their heels.
I do not class myself as a feminist, but you do not have to be to appreciate what is simple decency.
Nor do I class myself as a humanitarian but I still donate money to charities and NGOs who
do great work and work hard.
All in all, the matters mentioned in this column are instances of staff and supporters not being
overlooked by the people who normally have the best seat in the house on a Saturday afternoon.
People in key roles within clubs who appreciate decency in football and have the humility to recognise
this and act in a show of gratitude.
The fact The Non-League Football Paper has been published for well over a decade now is down
to people being proud of their clubs and buying the paper because they have something to be
proud about, regardless of successes or failures on the pitch.
