Newborns in Need Baby shower at the Governor’s Mansion each year since 2003, a baby shower to support Denver Health foundation’s Newborns in Need program has been held at the Boettcher Mansion at the Governor’s residence. New baby items valued at more than $3,000 were donated by 140 guests who attended on Sunday, May 6th. The afternoon tea provided an opportunity for the program to thank its most significant donors and volunteers and “Special Friend of Newborns in Need” awards were presented. Corporate recipients included The Boppy Company and King Soopers. Private individuals included seamstress, Brenda llewellyn, Cathy Goodman of the Columbine Quilt Guild, The Chicks That Click (a group of professional photographers who donate their services to create the program’s Babies of Denver Health calendar each year) and volunteer, Erin Hampton. Denver Health neo-natologist, Dr. Sharon langendoerfer, recounted a few of the many heart-wrenching situations that she sees daily in her practice. Denver throws a Baby shower! May 5th and 6th was a great weekend for Denver Health Foundation’s Newborns in Need program. once a year, as Mother’s Day approaches, the entire Denver community is invited to rally around the thousands of low-income babies born at Denver Health Medical Center. It’s a time when “Denver Throws a Baby Shower!” and donors were invited to drop off new baby items to help the cause. Dozens of volunteers greeted cars as they drove through the parking lot of the hospital and unloaded diapers, wipes and new baby items. Many of the vehicles were carrying donations from baby showers that were held in homes and businesses like Merrill lynch, Better Business Bureau, Galloway Group, and lockheed Martin For the first time this year, drop-off locations also included all metro area Coldwater Creek stores and Kuni lexus Automotive. The generosity of the community was overwhelming and over 6,000 items were donated – a record-breaking number. Also, for the first time, the city’s biggest baby shower had a media sponsor, The Boppy Company. With their support, “open Your Hearts to Newborns in Need” received tremendous TV publicity on 9News in the form of a public service announcement featuring newscaster, Cheryl Preheim, that aired in the weeks leading up to the event. King Soopers again provided a platform for cash donations by offering their customers a way to give at their local stores during the entire month of May. Foundation Program Director, Robin Engleberg, expressed her gratitude by saying, “Every baby deserves a healthy start in life. But in this economy, many families struggle to provide for their infants. In many cases, the gifts provided by the Newborns in Need program are the only new items their babies will receive. It means the world to them. I want to thank everyone who helped to make the day such a success and who support the program year round.” Ann Coronado, Wells Fargo (R) presents $5,000 check to Robin Engleberg Never underestimate the power of a determined mother. Ann Coronado, who works for Wells Fargo Bank, has been touched many times by Denver Health Medical Center. Her daughter works in the hospital’s Admissions Department and has first-hand experience with the needs of many low-income patients. In her job as Collateral Control Administrator at Wells Fargo Capital Finance Business Credit Division, Ann is given two days off each year to volunteer in the community. She chose the Foundation’s Newborns in Need program. She was so touched by the needs of babies born into poverty in Denver that she made a presentation to the The Good Works committee. They allocate funds based on recommendations www.denverhealthfoundation.org Homestead Charity Chicks helped to unload donated baby items Bruce Berman delivered a donation of diapers Wells Fargo Opens Its Heart to Newborns in Need by employees who have significant volunteer experiences. Her persuasive description of the program resulted in a $5,000 gift from Wells Fargo to Newborns in Need. This is not the first time that Wells Fargo has stepped up in support of Denver Health Foundation. Since 1997, the different arms of Wells Fargo, including the national office, the Wells Fargo Foundation, their local branches, and Wells Fargo Advisors, have generously supported many Denver Health projects including the Child and Adolescent Pavilion Project, School-Based Health Centers, the Trauma and Urology endowments, as well as participating as sponsors in several events including the NightShine Gala, Hot Rocks and the Riverfront Fashion Show. Their cumulative donations equal $220,250. Wells Fargo Vice President, Pat Cortez, has played a major role by serving as a member of the Foundation Board of Directors and has been instrumental in developing a strong connection between these two institutions. We salute Ann Coronado and Wells Fargo for their support of Denver Health. 9
