Canada 150 Celebrations & Canada 150 Infrastructure Grants
2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Canada’s confederation and Port Hope is proud
to join the national celebration. This is a memorable year for Canada and while Canada Day has
already passed, we still have various activities planned throughout the year.
In addition to hosting events, Port Hope is proud to announce that we have received Canada 150
Infrastructure Grants to help mark our 150th anniversary in lasting infrastructure upgrades.
The projects within this grant are:
✓ Trail improvements, outdoor fitness equipment and way-finding signage - anticipated
completion fall 2017
✓ Jack Burger Sports Complex arena boards and re-purpose the old boards
for Caroline Street rink - Completed
✓ Jack Burger Sports Complex road sign - Completed
✓ Alex Carruthers Park playground and netting - Completed
✓ Town Park ball diamond upgrades to fencing and backstop - anticipated completion fall 2017
The Ganaraska River
The majestic Ganaraska River offers some
of the best trout and salmon fishing in the
province and draws anglers from great
distances to fish the “Ganny.” The spectacular
trout run in the spring offers excellent
steelhead trout fishing and in the fall salmon
achieve sizes of 30 to 40 pounds!
In the fall, between late August and early
October, watch the chinook and silvery coho
salmon migration! Mixed in with the fall run,
you may also see migratory brown trout in their
vibrant spawning colours.
ZERO tolerance
for illegal
fishing
Fish Ladder Park
Corbett’s Dam (known locally as the Port Hope fish
ladder) is the best place to view fish as they leap
their way up the ladder to the spawning grounds in
the north. This fish sanctuary has a no fishing rule.
To find the fish ladder, follow these GPS coordinates:
43o58’10.7”N78o17’44.5”W.
New this year, Ministry of Natural Resources is
installing a live fish camera! Watch for details on
how you can view the fishway. A strategic priority
of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture
includes further trail development and the creation
of a passive park area. In 2016 a parking lot was
added and the start of a trail connection to the
Ganaraska Hiking Trial.
Parks and Trail Upgrades
As a Community Strategic Plan priority, the
Department is establishing areas of focus for
parks and trail upgrades, specifically around
the Ganaraska River. Trail upgrades will
include some paving, lighting and outdoor
fitness equipment as part of the Canada 150
Infrastructure Grant. Park upgrades include a
new interactive park at Riverside Park (across
from Ruth Clarke Activity Centre) which is
funded through the New Horizons for Seniors
grant.
Parks and trails
Port Hope trails
Port Hope offers both rural and urban trails for walking, cycling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
✓ New Upcoming program for 2017 Naming of Trails program! Watch for details and updates to trail signage
and wayfinding along the Ganaraska River (Phase 1 of this project).
✓ The Port Hope section of the Waterfront Trail connects Clarington to the west and Hamilton Township
through Cobourg to the east. The urban section of the waterfront trail on the east side of the Ganaraska River
with spectacular views of Lake Ontario features the dedicated handiwork of volunteers that made this trail
possible including benches, bird feeders, a gazebo, boardwalk and viewing area. This section also tributes the
community leaders who played a key role in the trails development – The Keith Richan Walkway, Peter Huffman
Trail and the A.K. Sculthorpe Memorial Woodland Marsh. The Waterfront Trail is also a natural waystation for
monarch butterflies and provides the resources necessary for monarchs to produce successive generations
and sustain their migration. UPDATE: The Port Hope Waterfront Trail experienced extensive damage with
record high water levels in Lake Ontario in 2017. Some sections of the trail remain closed. Repairs will
be completed when water levels recede within the normal range. Residents and Visitors are asked to be
diligent in obeying postings and notices.
✓ The Ganaraska Trail Pine Ridge section starts at the cairn opposite the Town Hall in Rotary Park beside the
Ganaraska River. With 65 kilometers of varied terrain, this section is easy and novices should have no difficulties.
✓ Try the new Greenbelt Route that was created to make it easier for Ontarians to access the natural beauty of
the Greenbelt. It connects dozens of rural communities, encouraging tourists to cycle to their destinations and
support local economies. Visit their website greenbelt.ca/route.
✓ Geocaching GPS units are available for use at the Town Park Recreation Centre. You and your family can use
one of the units locally or take it on a family vacation. Sign out procedures will be followed but this service is
free! Call 905-885-7908 for more details.
Caroline Street Rink
The rink at Caroline Street has undergone a major update with
funding support through the Government of Canada. New rink
boards and glass have been installed at this rink, as well as
updates to the surrounding park area. The rink is available for
those wishing to play a variety of sports in a neighbourhood
setting. A valued group of volunteers work hard in partnership
with the parks department to maintain this rink as a natural ice
surface in the winter (weather dependent). Ice conditions are
reviewed and the park opening is posted when available. For
more information about ice conditions during the winter, or to
volunteer, please call 905-885-8760.
GARBAGE IN PARKS
Illegal dumping activities have been
problematic throughout the Municipality–
particularly in municipal parks and on trails.
Staff has estimated that between 50 – 75%
of the waste being collected is a result of
residential waste being placed in or beside
parks containers.
In order to attempt to reduce the occurrences
of these activities and to encourage
responsible behaviours in our parks and trails,
a number of strategies are in place. These
action items include the following:
✓ The removal of garbage containers has
been completed on all trails and will be
replaced with strategically located specialized
dog waste containers.
✓ A hotline for reporting illegal dumping
where residents are encouraged to report any
concerns. An incentive will be provided upon
successful issuance of a ticket.
✓ A public awareness campaign, developed
in partnership with the Marketing Department,
“Put Your Trash In Its Place”.
The Municipality of Port
Hope is raising awareness
about irresponsible waste
disposal. We’re reminding the
community of the garbage
and recycling guidelines that
help to keep the Municipality beautiful. Do your
MONTREAL - A Cobourg teen who got her
start at a local dance school recently graced
the stage at Montreal’s Place des Arts in a duction of the Nutcracker.
Emilie Anderson, 15, grew up in Cobourg,
but is now in her second year in the professional
dance program at L’École supérieure,
a Montreal ballet school founded in 1952 by
Ludmilla Chiriaeff. Chiriaeff also founded
the dance company Les Grands Ballets Canadiens,
which annually performs the Nutcracker,
choreographed by Fernand Nault, at
the Place des Arts on the Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier
stage. The show was broadcast on CBC
pro-
French television on Jan. 6.
After competitive auditions in September,
Emilie took the role of a Russian doll for the
second year in a row, she said in a telephone
interview from Montreal. Being on stage at
the Les Place des Arts, Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier
stage, with its 2,996 seats, was “exciting”
and a bit “nerve racking,” she said. The Nutcracker
is a major holiday production for the
dance company, with more than 100 dancers
involved.
“It’s really an amazing experience being
Adrienne Surprenant photo/ hanslucas.com
on stage with the company,” she said.
