Our 2017/2018 Season of plays
and musicals is driven by a love
of familiar stories, with an eye
fervently trained on the horizon.
These are plays rooted in the
past, from perennial classics to
rediscovered gems to playful sendups.
From our inception, freeFall has built
a reputation for bringing a fresh,
sometimes irreverent, but always
forward-looking interpretation to
familiar stories. This season, we
embrace that approach with both
arms to present a widely varied
assortment of plays, curated to shed
an enlightening, entertaining, and
sometimes brutally honest light on
what it means to be alive in 2017
by revisiting stories from our past.
SUN
1898. Northwestern Canada. Deep in the forests of the Yukon
Territory. After the massacre of her tribe, a young girl is rescued
from the snow by an old huntsman from a nearby settlement who
offers shelter and the strength to survive. Torn from centuries
of tradition, facing a new and violent land, she struggles to find
her path in the world. An outsider to all, she discovers hope
in the friendship of an abandoned wolf, White Fang. With this
newfound alliance, the two unite with the land, learning the ways
of her ancestors. Lethal with blade and bow, there are few who
can match her skill in the wild. But when the time comes, and she
faces the greatest challenge of all, will these skills be enough to
make a difference? Will they be enough to survive? An epic story
of love, loss, and redemption – red-written in the snow – from
Jethro Compton, writer and director of The Man Who Shot Liberty
Valance. Inspired by the classic novel by Jack London, author of
The Call of the Wild and The Sea-Wolf, this exciting world-premiere
co-production with Jethro Compton Productions will transfer
directly from freeFall to London’s Park Theatre.
An aviator crashes his plane in the Sahara Desert. There
he meets a little prince who has left his home on Asteroid
B-612 and its only other inhabitant, his beloved rose.
Along the way he discovers a parade of extraordinary
individuals from a king to a businessman to a fox.
Each peels back another layer of what it means to be
alive, ultimately revealing the importance of personal
connection and sacrifice in a world that seeks to diminish
that which connects us. The most translated book in the
French language, this allegory remains a beautiful example
of personal struggle manifesting itself as transcendent
art. Saint-Exupéry’s fantastical musing, inspired by the
fall of France to fascist Germany, is at once delightfully
imaginative and deeply philosophical. “All grown-ups were
once children... but only few of them remember it.”
The Glass Menagerie
by Tennessee Williams
January 27 - February 18, 2018
The seminal masterpiece by one of America’s greatest playwrights
presented by Al May and Michael Miller & Robert Jenkins
Amanda Wingfield dwells in memories of her idealized
youth, when she entertained gentleman callers who,
according to her, rivaled over her hand in marriage.
With a smothering love for her children, she has driven
Tom into a fantasy world of his own where he escapes
into movies and solitude, wandering the midnight
streets of St. Louis. His physically and emotionally
fragile sister, Laura, escapes into her collection of small
glass animals. This pressure cooker is released when
Tom invites an acquaintance over for dinner. Amanda
immediately maneuvers, seeing him as a possible husband
for Laura. Will salvation for all three come from this
fateful dinner with Laura’s very own gentleman caller?
Or will the delicate world they’ve built around each
other come toppling down? This deeply personal semiautobiographical
work marked Tennessee William’s arrival
as one of America’s greatest playwrights and is universally
regarded as one of the most powerful and important
plays of the Twentieth Century.
Daddy Long Legs
music & lyrics by Paul Gordon book by John Caird
based on the novel by Jean Webster
March 17 - April 8, 2018
The charming novel that became a classic film in a new musical adaptation
presented by Kate Tiedemann & Ellen Cotton
sponsored by Marion Rich and Diane Bailey Morton, Attorney
Jerusha Abbott is the “Oldest Orphan in the John Grier Home”
until a mysterious benefactor decides to send her to college to be
educated as a writer. Required to write him a letter once a month,
she is never to know the benefactor’s identity – so she invents
one for him: Daddy Long Legs. Although she knows that he will
never respond to her letters, she grows more and more fond of
this elusive and kindly “old” gentleman. But another relationship
soon begins to develop in Jerusha’s life. Jervis Pendleton is the
well-to-do, “youngish” uncle of one of Jerusha’s roommates, who
introduces her to a world of literature, travel, and adventure.
Through her correspondence with Daddy Long Legs and her
growing intimacy with Jervis, Jerusha’s letters chronicle her
emergence as a delightfully independent “New American Woman.”
Yet, there is one startling fact that Jerusha has yet to uncover – a
fact that will change her life forever. This witty and romantic tale
in the vein of Jane Austen, The Brontë Sisters and Downton Abbey
features music by the composer of Broadway’s Jane Eyre and a
book by the Tony-winning librettist/director of Les Misérables.
The Machine Stops
by Eric Davis
based on the story by E.M. Forster
May 5 - May 27, 2018
Forster’s prescient 1909 story that predicted our reliance on the internet
presented by Sylvia Rusche | sponsored by Bill Ward
E.M. Forster’s prescient short story,
penned in 1909, predicts a world with
chilling similarities to our own. Set in a
dystopian future where people live isolated
from one another in identical rooms
and only interact through The Machine,
Forster’s story seems to astutely predict
technologies that evoke the internet, text
messaging, and social media. For The
Machine is an omnipotent technology
that provides everything one could want,
eliminating the need to ever leave one’s
room. Vashti is content with life as it is, but
her son Kuno believes there must be more
to life, and ventures to the surface. What
he finds there will change him forever. This
important early sci-fi masterpiece is seen
by many as the forebear to such works as
Logan’s Run and Orwell’s 1984.
The Musical of Musicals
The Musical!
music by Eric Rockwell lyrics by Joanne Bogart
book by Eric Rockwell and Joanne Bogart
June 23 - July 15, 2018
A musically musical musical inspired by the musical writers that brought us musicals
sponsored by Marion Rich | community partner Cherie Willard
I can’t pay the rent! You must pay the rent! I’ll pay the rent!
From this humble, classic American plot come not one,
not three, but FIVE musical adaptations as though they
were written by five of the most influential musical theatre
writers or writing teams of all time. There is a Rodgers &
Hammerstein version, set in Kansas in August, complete with
a dream ballet; a Sondheim version, featuring the landlord
as a tortured artistic genius who slashes the throats of his
tenants in revenge for not appreciating his work; a Jerry
Herman version, as a splashy star vehicle; an Andrew Lloyd
Webber version, a rock musical with themes borrowed from
Puccini; and a Kander & Ebb version, set in a speakeasy in
Chicago. This hilarious musical pays loving tribute to the
traditions of musical theatre while mercilessly lampooning
them to shreds. The irreverent finale to our season was the
longest-running show in the York Theatre’s history prior to its
extended off-Broadway run.
