19/20 SEASON
FREEFALLTHEATRE.COM
Ghost Light
From the Artistic Director...
This season is filled with
hauntings – ghosts, whether
literal or figurative, that emerge
from the past to give insight,
create obstacles, or remind us
where we come from.
The theatre tradition of the
ghost light (a single light left on
in the theatre when everyone
is gone for the night) derives
its name from the notion that
all theatres are haunted. Of
course its practical purpose is
for safety, but the superstitions
surrounding it are long and
storied.
I’m not a superstitious person,
but I do like to think that each
story we tell and each character
breathed to life on our stage
leaves something behind.
I’m overwhelmed to think of all
of the ghosts we’ve left behind
in the last decade. Thank you to
all of the audiences that have
helped us imagine them into
existence. We look forward to
leaving the light on for them for
years to come.
These more in-depth
The Turn of the Screw
by Jeffrey Hatcher
from the story by Henry James
September 28 - October 27, 2019
Precocious Miles and quiet Flora have a new governess. It quickly becomes
apparent that this new job is more than she bargained for. When she learns the
shocking truth about her predecessor, Miss Jessel, and begins to suspect that
the orphans are under the influence of malevolent forces, she resolves to protect
them by any means necessary.
What unfolds is one of the eeriest and most deeply psychological ghost stories
ever written. Hatcher’s razor-sharp adaptation preserves much of the ambiguity
at the heart of Henry James’ classic novella. Is this place truly haunted, or is the
governess the one plagued by demons of another sort?
The Lion In Winter
by James Goldman
November 23 - December 22, 2019
Henry II has let his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine out of prison to spend Christmas
with the family. But more is afoot than decking the halls with boughs of holly.
Each has their eyes set on the crown for a different son. Parents, siblings, and
the King of France become embroiled in a game of thrones that threatens to
destroy them all.
With a wildly comic tone, despite its dramatic action, James Goldman’s modern
classic is the family drama that lurks beneath the upheaval of history. And you
thought your family bickered at the holidays.
Marie and Rosetta
by George Brant
January 18 - February 16, 2020
Sister Rosetta Tharpe broke new ground in the world of gospel music. An
influence on Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix, and Ray Charles, she is
considered by many to be the “Godmother of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”
This jubilant play with music gives us a fly-on-the-wall seat to the first rehearsal
between Rosetta and her protégée, Marie Knight, on the eve of the tour that
would establish them as one of the most important musical duos in American
popular music.
Lone Star Spirits
by Josh Tobiessen
February 29 - March 29, 2020
Marley is back in her small Texas hometown for what she hopes will be an
easy trip to deal with some family business. When she arrives at her estranged
father’s liquor store with her hipster fiancé, there is a collision between who
she is and where she comes from. When her ex-boyfriend – the local football
hero, an old high school chum, and the ghost of the bear-wrestling pioneer who
founded the town show up, things take a series of unexpected turns.
This is a fresh, smart comedy about the ghosts that haunt us all – wherever we
find ourselves in the cultural divide.
Dear World
music and lyrics by Jerry Herman
book by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee
based on The Madwoman of Chaillot by Jean Giraudoux
as adapted by Maurice Valency new version by David Thompson
April 25 - May 24, 2020
The Countess Aurelia lives in the basement of a quaint bistro in 1940s Paris,
driven mad, reminiscing about her lost love. When oil is discovered beneath
the streets of Paris, a group of corporate presidents hatch a scheme to blow up
the bistro and get at it. The Countess rallies the denizens of the Paris fringe to
foil their plot and exert a fitting punishment on the greedy execs. Can beauty,
nature, and art prevail against greed and ravenous industry? Will the doves ever
return to Paris?
Jerry Herman, Jerome Lawrence, and Robert E. Lee reimagine Giraudoux’s The
Madwoman of Chaillot as a musical with the kind of decadent and ebullient score
that is Herman’s trademark.
This show is recommended for all audiences.
