PRESIDENT`S MESSAGE
Hello Members,
Falls is in the air and hunting season will soon be upon
us. The SCI Drayton Valley Chapter had another
outstanding year thanks to our members, supporters
and volunteers. Our contributions were recognized
on a global scale at the annual SCI convention being
recognized as the 2016 SCI Chapter of the Year.
The foundation of our chapter is built upon our
members and as a member, like myself, you are doing
your part to help protect hunters rights for your and
future generations. With our 9 th annual Call of The
Wild banquet fast approaching I am confident you as
members will enjoy a great evening of food, auction
entertainment, have a great opportunity to bid on
fantastic auction items, and maybe buy a lucky ticket
on a bundle or a gun!
I hope to see you on September 16 th at the Call of The
Wild banquet; it is sure to be a great night!

2017 NASP PROVINCIALS HOSTED BY
SCI DRAYTON VALLEY
The Drayton Valley SCI Chapter was extremely proud to once again host the Alberta NASP
Provincial Tournament from April 26 - 29, 2017. This was the third year the chapter successfully
hosted this provincial event in conjunction with their partners AHEIA, Brazeau BowBenders and
Cabelas Windermere, Edmonton. Over the four days the tournament welcomed 1,200 archers
from across the province of Alberta.
Students proudly representing their community schools, from grades 4 through to 12, had
the opportunity to shoot within the different divisions in a friendly competition. There was
excitement in the air - for some their first tournament while for others their last. The tournament
venue offered a variety of activities that resulted in a lot of smiles and joy for the participants.
Pride also filled the air as archers elated in their accomplishments, and spectators cheered the
archers on.
It was once again a memorable event that is certain to hold special memory in the lives of the
participants, and most definitely within the hearts of the SCI Drayton Valley Chapter and partner
representatives who contributed their time over the course of the four day tournament.
Over the course of the last six years the SCI Drayton Valley Chapter has contributed in excess of
$180,000 toward the National Archery in Schools Program, resulting in the sport of archery being
introduced within 14 local area schools. The Chapter is steadfast in their support of NASP and
continues to support these schools by way of providing funding to assist with further equipment
purchases and repairs when needed.

kids!! The Saturday evening
saw everyone enjoying a
wonderful meal together
while relaxing and enjoying
one another’s company
around the fire. Harmonica
playing and toe tapping by
the fire were also a highlight
of the weekend!!

2 Before and Beyond Giclee

5 Goat Hunt
6 Day Alaskan Mount Goat Hunt
Alaska D&L Outfitters is inviting one hunter to come on a 6 Day hunt in GMU 07 in the Chugach National Forest on the
Kenai Peninsula in Alaska for a Mountain Goat. This is a 6 Day 1x1 guided hunt. Extra days can be added at $ 1,000 per

7 National Archery in Schools Program

NASP Program within our local schools. The efforts have resulted in over 14 schools
participating in the program and a partnered initiative which brought
the 2017 NASP Provincials to our community. NASP has become
a welcome addition to the lives of so many local youth and we are
dedicated and passionate about continuing efforts toward its continued
success. We are pleased to present this official NASP target, bow and

8 Brandon Bailey Fine Art
"North Woods" Grizzly Bear Original
During his teens, the Game and Fish Department of Wyoming gave Brandon his first commission.
Although only 16 years old, he was commissioned to create cover sketches for all State of Wyoming
Hunting Regulation Pamphlets. The Game and Fish has since commissioned Brandon to do many
other projects, including numerous benefit and auction items.
Brandon has won many awards in art shows across the country and has participated in shows where
he has raised thousands of dollars through art donations for the Wyoming Wildlife Heritage Expo,
The Moose Foundation, The Elk Foundation, The Sheep Federation and Safari Club International.
We are thrilled to once again have Brandon supporting our chapter this year.

14 Wolf Hunt – Del Bredeson Guiding
Two hunters will join Del Bredeson for a five (5) day wolf hunt over bate. This hunt will
take place in Grand Prairie along the outfitters trapline and can be taken in the winter
of 2017 or 2018. Range of dates hunt can be taken is between December to February.

12,989…WHAT’S IN THIS NUMBER?

Couple of things, it’s the distance from Calgary to
Queenstown NZ. It’s also the cost, give or take a
couple of bucks, of a 5 day gold medal Stag and
Tahr hunt with Telford Hunting NZ Ltd.
Telford hunting has been operating a guiding
business since the early 90's, 25 plus years of Stag,
Tahr, Chamois, and Fallow deer hunting with the
occasional elk, pig, Arapawa ram and feral goat
thrown in for a bit of variety. For the last 7 years
we have been working together to support your
Drayton Valley Chapter with a Red Stag auction at
your September Banquet.
Each year at the annual SCI Convention in the USA,
Sue and I look forward to the smiling faces of Paula
and Shannon as they visit with us on the opening
morning of the convention to renew our auction
donation, and extend an invitation to the awards
night and entertainment evening; Coby and Bill are
never far behind.
As I pen this report it’s the middle of winter for
us, well truthfully the solstice was a month ago so
we are beginning to get a little more daylight every
week now. Sunrise this morning (8th August) was
7:50a.m, sunset 5:50 p.m, its -2C, there is a solid
frost, not a cloud in the sky and by 2pm it should
be 7C. Typical August winters day. By Canadian
standards not at all cold, cold enough for us, good
hunting weather, as you are sweltering in the mid
30s.
Our hunting is over for the season so ALL my efforts
for the next 2 months are about connecting with
potential clients with the sole aim of filling the
2018 hunting schedule. As with most small family
run hunting operations we rely heavily on referral
business from our existing clients/friends.
Marketing and advertising are expensive and in
most cases extremely difficult to measure and
quantify. Building relationships with Chapters such

as Drayton Valley are as important for us as they
are for you. It may surprise you to know that on
average it takes 3-5 years from initial contact to
the actual signing of a hunting contract, we are
into building relationships well before the actual
hunt takes place.
For those of you wanting to come to NZ, it’s not
just about the hunting nor it shouldn’t be, you
need to plan a tour and have a real holiday. All you
need to do is organize work, family, and finance,
no easy task for any of us. I'm working to schedule
the guiding, not that difficult as it myself or Duncan
or a combination of both. But good guides need
to be looked after and Duncan is better than good
so I need to make sure he is kept busy during the
hunting "season". He is the single biggest asset
our business has, I have to keep him busy. He has a
family and mortgage to pay and plenty of guiding
is the easiest way to keep him happy. Its worked
for the last 12 years which has as much to do with
Duncan's loyalty as it is to the volume of work.
Duncan and I are a formable team once the hunting
starts. On that simple basis the ideal hunt for us is
2 hunters guided 1x1 or 3 hunters split between us,
4 is our maximum, the exception (always plan for
exceptions) is a family hunt. All about relationship
building.
Next on my check list is securing your
accommodations with our local Hawea Hotel. The
Hotel is adjacent to our main stag hunting lease
and 3kms from our home. It’s fun setting up the
spotting scope on the room balconies and spotting
stags. It’s an awesome little hotel, it’s also our local
pub.
With guides and accommodations sorted we move
to the animals available to hunt. Do we have 25
silver medal stags on our lease? How many Golds, if
we have bookings for 25 stags in reality we need 40
plus stags. What about Fallow? 10 booked can and

often become 20 as hunters find the temptation
irresistible. Shoot too many and we have nothing
or not enough for next season. Game management
is critical to our annual planning process and is
a continual equation throughout the season.
Season; well technically we don’t have one but in
reality we hunt from early March through to the
end of August.
Our key word is consistency, consistency of quality
animals, consistent delivery and service, as we
look to fill our booking schedule for the season. To
achieve this has a number of variables, it will help
explain why I put a large effort into marketing in our
"off" season. I'm a planning zealot, so the earlier
I know exactly what the next season requires the
easier it is once the fun starts, the actually hunting
is the fun and easy part.
So on one hand, you the hunter are focused on
can we afford this hunt, are we booking with the
right person, can we get time off work that works
in with a March -August hunting season? Who's
looking after the kids, grand kids, do they come,
can they come? What work am I missing out on by
going to New Zealand?
On the other hand we know our business,
properties and animals. Our prices are competitive
so would you people get organized and send that
deposit!! Repeat that process 20 times and our
season is full; easy!!!
One big benefit of 25yrs experience as both
a hunter and a guide/outfitter is we have an
extremely good understanding of what it takes to
put a hunt together from all persons involved. The
key is good communications and addition to detail.
So bid like crazy at the banquet in September

YOUTH HUNTER
TRAINING COURSE
Another successful class of soon to be
outdoor enthusiasts participated in a Youth
Hunter Training Course from May 11 - 14
hosted by SCI Drayton Valley. This class
of 9 students learned the basics of hunter
education, survival, wildlife identification,
first aid and rules and regulations.
The Hunter Training Course is offered free
of charge to children 17 years of age and
under. If you have a child, or know of
someone who may be interested in taking

Grouse Kebabs
SERVES 4
INGREDIENTS
• 4 ruffed grouse breasts (skinless, boneless)
• 3 sprigs fresh thyme
• 1/2 cup olive oil
• 1/2 cup white wine
• Salt and black pepper to taste
• 1 red onion, cut into ¾-inch cubes
• 16 grape tomatoes, whole
• 16 brown mushrooms, whole
• Canola oil
PREPARATION
Cubes of ruffed grouse breast skewered along with grape tomatoes,
mushrooms and onion make for wonderful kebabs. No ruffies? You can also
use other grouse, as well as duck, goose or wild turkey breast meat.
• Cut grouse breasts into ¾-inch cubes and place in a zip-lock bag with thyme, olive oil, wine, salt and pepper. Marinate
in refrigerator for 30 minutes.
• Remove grouse from bag and thread onto skewers, alternating with onion cubes, tomatoes and mushrooms. Brush
kebabs with canola oil and grill until grouse is cooked through.
• Serve with fragrant basmati rice and carrot rounds.
• Tip: If you use wooden skewers, first soak them in water for 15 minutes to help prevent them from splintering or
burning. Whether you use stainless steel or wooden skewers, coat them in cooking oil before threading on the grouse
and vegetables so the food will easily slide off after grilling. Also coat the grill with cooking oil so the kebabs don’t stick.
• For the glass: For this tasty light meal, fill your glass with a full-bodied beer or a heavy Chardonnay.

FISHING DOCK
The SCI Drayton Valley Fishing Dock has been extremely busy over the summer months
with a number of groups getting great enjoyment from their visits. Our Chapter extends

We are a society of avid hunters and outdoor enthusiasts who
are dedicated to promoting responsible use of our natural
resources.
We care about hunting, fishing, wildlife and outdoor experiences
within the natural environment we all live in and enjoy.
We are passionate about protecting and conserving the
outdoors and its resources for generations to come.
Through our parent organization - Safari Club International -
we promote and present a number of wildlife conservation and
humanitarian efforts within our community, and support Safari
Club International in their endeavors toward ensuring hunting
rights are protected worldwide.
