‘Sport is for all’
Sutton Valence School, Kent
What variety of sports are available? Is there anything out
of the ordinary that pupils can try? Sutton Valence School
plays most of the major sports; Hockey, Rugby, Netball, Cricket
(for both girls and boys), Tennis, Rounders, Swimming and
has an Athletics team. One thing the School does very well is
support people as they find their niche, whether in our main
sports or those that are more unusual. The School recently
launched a Ski team, an Equestrian team and Golf team
who have all celebrated success in their first competitions.
Every child at Marlborough House
School can play and compete in
a sports team.
What proves to be most popular? Each child is different and
has different interests. At Sutton Valence, no sport is universally
favourite but we challenge our pupils to take part in team sports.
Whilst everyone would like to compete in the 1st team the
School will field as many teams as there is opposition giving most
pupils an opportunity to represent the School competitively.
Do teams get the chance to travel to fixtures/matches both
locally and abroad? We have an extensive fixture list playing
many top schools both locally and slightly further afield,
such as Tonbridge School, Benenden, Eastbourne College,
Whitgift School and the King’s School Canterbury. The
School also participates in local and national competitions
with great success. The School runs international tours
on an annual basis, enlarging each player’s experience.
How can skills developed through participating in
sports transfer to other areas of academic life?
The benefits of sport and physical activity are well known, with
recent research linking it to high achievement in academic studies.
Such studies have proven that sport and physical activity helps to
improve brain function, increase energy levels and enhance the
quality of sleep. Regular exercise can also assist greatly in reducing
stress levels whilst it enhances wellbeing in those who undertake
it; all very important for our pupils in their academic work.
How do you encourage a healthy and active lifestyle?
Health and fitness run through the seam of sport at Sutton
Valence School. Last year alone, the Sports department
completed over 7,000 fitness tests, measuring seven
different components of fitness of each individual student.
Pupils are then able to analyse their own performances
in these tests and establish areas of fitness where they are
strong, and areas of fitness where they can improve.
