WT Education Supplement
Hurstpierpoint College, West Sussex
What does a scholarship offer the pupil? Award holders are
valued at Hurst, not only for what they can achieve, but also
as role models and for their ability to support and lead others.
They will be well supported and every step will be taken to
ensure they make the most of the opportunities and their
own abilities. There is a regular process of reviews in order
to see how best to develop an individual pupil’s talents.
In line with most HMC independent schools, the majority
of scholarships awarded are between 5% and 25% of school
fees. However, means tested bursaries can significantly
enhance the total amount of financial assistance.
How many scholarship places are available each year
and to who? There is no fixed number of Scholarships
or Awards given in any discipline each year (apart from
Dance, which is one; and the BN6 award, which is up to
two), decisions are based on the ability of the candidates.
Awards are made to candidates who will make an outstanding
contribution to the life of the school and recognise high
academic ability or excellence in another field.
What are the chances of being a successful applicant?
Whilst competition is tough the chances are good, subject
to ability (as per criteria for each award), assessment and
test results. Practical assessments/auditions/interviews
will take place for non-academic awards and candidates
are assessed on potential as well as achievement.
How are potential students guided through the process
– what do they have to do/complete? Potential applicants
are sent a scholarship booklet, detailing the criteria and
process for each award, which includes contact details
for the staff member in charge, should they need further
information or advice prior to completing their application.
They must complete an application form, signed by their
current Headteacher, and submit references from the teacher/
coach relevant to the award being applied for. In addition
to assessments in the relevant area, they will be required to
sit verbal/non-verbal reasoning tests and attend an interview
with the Headmaster and Head of relevant part of School.
Caterham School, Surrey
What does a scholarship offer the pupil? At Caterham
School scholarships not only recognise ability and potential
but, vitally, nurture and accelerate talent. Children
benefit from a programme that recognises and adapts to
a child’s skill and unique approach to learning, whether
their talent lies in academic subjects, sport, performing
arts such as music, drama and dance or technology.
How many scholarship places are available each year
and to who? Scholarships are available at 11+, 13+ and
16+ (Sixth Form) entry and are designed to encourage
and recognize a broad range of talent across academic,
co-curricular and sporting. There is no set number of
places each year although applications are high and so
all candidates are required to be assessed. Scholarships
can be held alongside means-tested bursaries.
What areas of the curriculum are covered? The School
is keen and equipped to welcome and nurture a broad
range of talents. As one of England’s leading independent
schools, Caterham’s scholarship offer reflects every aspect
of school life, including academic, science, music, drama,
sport and a new Innovation Scholarship for technology.
What are the chances of being a successful applicant?
Caterham is a popular school and so applications for places
and scholarships are competitive. We take every care to
support and look after children and their parents throughout
the application and scholarship process. We take great care
to demonstrate genuine interest in each child who applies
so that the assessment is a positive, affirming experience.
How are potential students guided through the
process – what do they have to do/complete?
The process for each different kind of scholarship is
tailored towards identifying talent and potential in that
particular area. Our admissions team are always on
hand to talk parents through the process and answer
any particular questions they have at any stage.
