PUBLIC SPEAKING Twitter/NASA ENGLISH SPEAKING UNION P UBLIC SPEECH: REGIONALS 2016 ‘Space Travel is worth the money spent on it’ The Earth is already dead; we just don’t know it yet. Perhaps you are well aware of the biggest problems in the world, perhaps not. When asked, a small percentage of people say that they don’t know what those are. Not a clue. None. Now, I’m no expert myself but I’m guessing not having the Earth anymore is up there with the world’s biggest problems. I’m sure that overpopulation is something that has crossed all of your minds at some point in your life. We have a current population of 7.4 billion people and it is predicted that by 2050, it will have risen to 10 billion. At some point, the Earth is bound to run out of resources and room for our increasingly crowded planet. And when that happens, the only option for us to survive as a species is to leave Earth and fi nd life elsewhere. Anthropocosmism is the science that believes that space industrialisation and the exploitation of its resources is the only way for humanity to avert an environmental catastrophe. In addition to overpopulation and resources depletion, not to mention our own capacity for self destruction, another risk facing the Earth is we might get hit by a meteor. It is statistically inevitable and could wipe out our entire species. It’s going to happen. And what will we do when it does? Nothing, because we’ll be dead, like what happened to the dinosaurs when they became extinct 65 million years ago. Even if Earth is not destroyed by asteroids, we seem to be doing a pretty good job of it anyway with wars and industrial pollution. So by investing in space travel, we are investing in our future and if we could send people to Mars eventually we would be able to protect humanity. Up until now, the International Space Station has cost as much as $160 billion, a large sum of money, I know, and it’s easier to imagine how that kind of money could immediately help in the fi ght against cancer or world hunger. But that’s because we humans tend to be short-sighted. We’re focused on what’s happening tomorrow instead of 100 years from now. While there are many problems on Earth, many of them can be solved using the technologies that we develop through astronautics. For example, NASA’s research includes potential vaccines for Salmonella and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. How can anyone argue that that isn’t worth the money? So, in my opinion, yes, space travel is worth the cost. Why did Columbus travel west? Why did Marco Polo head east? Why did Neil Armstrong go to the moon? Because it is that pull, that unknown, that prospect of adventure that compels humans to seek new boundaries to explore. Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Galactic, once said “if you are inquisitive about life and inquisitive about the world around us, most of what’s around us is space”. Sending a manned mission to Mars is as much a challenge as a fantastic adventure. To boldly go where no man has gone before. Imagine living on another planet, millions of miles from the Earth, looking up into the sky with the knowledge that one of the ‘stars’ is actually the planet you were born on. Who can even envision the incredible feeling of leaving your footprint on the surface of Mars? Neil Armstrong would agree, this will be the next giant leap for mankind. And it’s predicted that we will be able to live there within just a few decades. How amazing is that? And once you live on Mars, just like Matt Damon, you could offi cially say “I am a Martian”. Even if we cannot live on another planet just yet, space exploration has already provided us with many benefi ts. Did you know that NASA and other space research agencies have given us everyday technologies such as the GPS, artifi cial limbs, water purifi ers, mobile phones, TVs, computers, vacuum cleaners … yes, vacuum cleaners! The same technology that helped Apollo astronauts drill for rock sample on the surface of the moon eventually returned to Earth and gave rise to the battery-operated miniature vacuum cleaner. Space exploration has turned literally into the fabric of society, providing design and material for certain types of sportswear, ranging from sports bras to temperature-control clothing to the swimsuits worn by every gold-medal winner in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Earth is the cradle of humanity, but mankind cannot stay in the cradle forever. Like all research, space exploration is a leap into the unknown and, in the words of a famous NASA scientist, “the probability of success is diffi cult to estimate; but if we never search, the chance of success is zero”. 15
