SPECIAL FEATURE: ODMA
Welcome to ODMA
2017
With only weeks to go until it
returns to Sydney, we are looking
towards ODMA17 with renewed
optimism.
The eyewear industry is projected to
exceed $165billion in sales by 2022, making
it the ideal time for independent practices to
re-energise themselves and reflect on what
they can do to better differentiate their
business moving forward.
ODMA17 will be the place to meet
associates and old friends, network, do
business and learn what’s new in technology
and trends.
All the major equipment and lens
companies are confirmed to exhibit and
will be joined by frame and sunglass brands
like Tom Ford, Jono Hennessy, Face à Face
and Lafont in the inaugural Design Junction
feature. Design Junction is also a key
platform of Frame Fashion Week, which will
take place within and around the Darling
Harbour precinct from 1-10 July.
ODMA17 will also see a larger number
of overseas experts presenting at both the
Vision Summit and Masterclass programme,
delving more deeply into their topics than
ever before.
Held on Friday 7 July, ODMA17’s Vision
Summit will entertain and educate
attendees, featuring Professor John
Marshall as leading keynote speaker.
Professor Marshall invented and patented
the revolutionary excimer laser for the
correction of refractive disorders. With in
excess of 50 million procedures now having
been undertaken worldwide, we are so
pleased he will be joining us at ODMA17.
Also presenting at the Vision Summit are
Professors Minas Coroneo, Peter McCluskey,
Fiona Stapleton, Paul Mitchell, Associate
Professor Chew Tec Kuan Paul (Singapore)
and Dr Rolando Toyos (USA).
In addition to the Vision Summit,
ODMA17’s Masterclass programme is the
most comprehensive one yet, running both
entry level and advanced education for
dispensers and practice staff.
We are delighted to have Elaine
Grisdale, head of professional services
and international development from the
Association of British Opticians, coming
to Australia to present as part of the
Masterclass offering.
As the peak body of wholesalers,
manufacturers and importers of optical
products in Australia, ODMA invests all
the proceeds from its fairs back into the
Australian independent optical industry so
we look forward to seeing you at ODMA17!
Strong speaker line-up
for Summit
Back in in Sydney after six years, organisers are
promising a new ODMA better than ever before,
including an impressive number of overseas
experts bound for Darling Harbour’s International
Convention Centre. Each has been tasked with delving
more deeply into their topics, following feedback from
ODMA members’ after the 2015 event.
Keynote speakers at ODMA17’s Vision Summit on
Friday 7 July, 2017, include Professor John Marshall from
the UK, Dr Rolando Toyos from the US and Associate
Professor Chew Tec Kuan Paul from Singapore, plus
home grown experts Professors Minas Coroneo, Fiona
Stapleton, Peter McCluskey and Paul Mitchell, promising
a very interesting and educational event.
NZ Optics asked two of the speakers how they
became involved in eye health and what they’re most
looking forward to at ODMA17.
Professor John Marshall
Internationallyacclaimed,
Professor John
Marshall’s career
in eye health spans
more than 50 years.
He is the current
Frost Professor of
Ophthalmology
at University
College London and
Emeritus Professor
at King’s College,
London and has
published 400
Professor John Marshall
research papers,
41 book chapters and seven books. He also invented
and patented the revolutionary Excimer laser for the
correction of refractive disorders and created the
world’s first diode laser for treating eye problems. He
will be covering three topics in Sydney: technology and
optometry – the brave new world; cross-linking as the
future of refractive surgery; and the ‘paradox’ of blue
light.
What inspired you to become involved in eye health?
My entry into the world of eye research was a strange
one. My father was a physicist and to him numbers
work. He was a little disappointed when I said I was
interested in medicine and said I ought to do a degree
involving numbers first. I thought about this and I
thought about the interaction between physics and
medicine and immediately decided the eye combined
both elements in one small organ. I was headhunted to
do a PhD and entered the Institute of Ophthalmology
in association with Moorfields Eye Hospital on 1
November 1965 and have never regretted it.
What are you most looking forward to at ODMA 2017?
In the past 50 years, I’ve become extremely
experienced in lecturing to ophthalmologists, but I
find optometrists often have totally different interests
and see emergent technologies in a very different way.
I’m always delighted to visit the Antipodes and to get
the wonderful barracking from Australian and New
Zealand cousins. It’s refreshing for an Englishman to
be shown our inadequacies and with such humour.
I really look forward to the ODMA meeting to get
a chance both to educate the audience and to be
Alcon: presbyopia ‘Xplained’
Alcon will introduce its free innovative resource
Ageing Eyes (presbyopia) Xplained at ODMA.
Xplained was created to help explain presbyopia
to patients through storytelling. It follows the
journey of a real patient, Penny, a lady in her
50’s with presbyopia, and breaks down what
presbyopia is, including the symptoms and
options available for treatment.
Ageing Eyes has been developed in collaboration
with patients, optometrists, Optometry Australia
and the Cornea & Contact Lens Society of
Australia (CCLSA). It is sponsored by Alcon
Australia.
