Tinley Park Kitchen & Bath creates happy customers
The following is a letter from
Sharon and Jeff N., satisfied customers
of Tinley Park Kitchen
and Bath Shoppe. The cabinets
are Dura Supreme, Cherry Cider
with Cambria Nevern countertops.
Spring 2017
I want to take a moment to
share the wonderful experience
we had in working with Tinley
Park Kitchen & Bath in remodeling
our kitchen. While we
were initially uncertain whether
they could meet our design and
quality needs, as we got to know
our designer, Rachel, we grew
increasingly confident in her
abilities to design the kitchen we
wanted and their ability to offer
higher-end cabinetry.
Indeed, as we realized early
on, kitchen remodels can be expensive
and create a great deal
of inconvenience. We appreciated
the honesty of our designer,
and the timeline she established
for our remodel was pretty much
spot-on and perfect in its execution.
We also appreciated her incredible
patience with us. Her professionalism
was beyond compare
and we are truly grateful for her
willingness to help us through
our struggles, as we searched for
the highest-quality alternatives to
meet our needs. Rachel always
brought to the table numerous alternatives
and shared them with
us in such a pleasant and caring
manner.
I would also like to thank the
carpentry team that was assigned
to our project. These two individuals
were always polite, on
time and truly experts in their
multiple fields. I cannot overstate
how incredibly exceptional
the cuts were in the crown molding,
the cabinetry and the island.
Attention to detail was present
every day in their work. I truly
enjoyed having them in our
home.
With the utmost sincerity
and without hesitation, I would
highly recommend Tinley Park
Kitchen & Bath for any customer
looking for a great design
partner who has the capability of
providing higher-end cabinetry.
The entire team was incredible.
Sincerely,
Jeff and Sharon
Tinley Park Kitchen & Bath’s
goal is to make all of their customers
feel Jeff and Sharon. Tinley
Park Kitchen & Bath loves
what they do, and are committed
to customer satisfaction.
Get the best home entertainment setup with Kole Digital
Entertainment is a great
escape from everyday life,
and great movies can improve
one’s mood. A good
home entertainment system
is a wise investment
that contributes to the
quality of one’s life, and
that of his or her family.
And no one knows that
better than Kole Digital,
the No. 1 place in Chicago
for award-winning
home theaters. With an eye
for visual entertainment
and a passion for creativity,
owner Rob Kole and
his team turn spaces into
spectacular movie theaters
and multi-purpose media
rooms.
With a staff of seasoned
CAD designers and engineers,
they create stunning
rooms that look and sound
unbelievable. Rob has a
four-year degree in sound
engineering, design and
acoustics, plus extensive
experience in sound and
lighting for live shows.
Cut to the present day,
and he is now scaling his
knowledge and skills from
large-scale entertainment
venues to a select room in
any home. If the premise
sounds interesting, visit
their design center on Lincoln
Highway in Frankfort
to see more.
The showroom’s exterior
is deceiving. An outdoor
observer has no idea how
big the place is. When one
enters, he or she is greeted
by a friendly staff who
takes the customer on a
tour of the 13,000-squarefoot
facility.
Customers can experience
two fully automated
smart homes, a lighting
studio, several gourmet
kitchens and audio demonstration
rooms, and five
spectacular home theaters.
Each theater has a different
theme, from the futuristic
Galaxy, to the art deco
Paradise, to the gentlemen’s
club-inspired Majestic.
The grand finale is a
two-story Chicago Theater
replica, complete with a
balcony.
Each is exquisitely
crafted with high-quality
materials, like stone columns,
acoustic treatment,
custom glass and metalwork.
There are lighting
options everywhere, and
each ceiling is unique —
one has a beautiful fiber
optic starfield. It’s like a
Disneyland for adults.
The second floor has a
furniture showroom with
more than 50 theater chairs
from which to choose, plus
several sectionals and
credenzas. Then, tour the
offices, where the CAD
designers work on plans
for several basements and
their 410th theater. Also,
see where the finishes are
selected — carpet, fabric,
tile, paint, custom cabinetry
and more.
It does not stop there.
Kole Digital started 18
years ago out of Rob’s
own home in Homer Glen,
and they were the first in
the area to specialize in
smart homes that feature
lighting control, climate,
motorized window treatments
and more.
Today, they offer every
conceivable home control
product. From an iPad,
customers can view cameras,
unlock a door, arm
a security system, select a
Pandora station and control
the volume in each
room of the house. They
even have an outdoor
kitchen display, complete
with an all-weather TV,
planter and rock speakers.
The space is always
changing. In the last few
months, a new interactive
space was added, so customers
can audition the
various control systems,
like Crestron, Vantage,
Control 4 and RTI. And
if customers are lucky,
they can get a sneak behind
the scenes at Kole’s
new teaching labs, where
they train what must be
the most talented installers
and programmers in their
field.
Meet with Rob, and customers
will see that his excitement
is infectious. He
has a passion for what he
does, and has his hands in
every design (they have 54
current projects and five
basements under construction).
He will also tell you that
no job is too small.
“Some people walk
in, purchase a Sony, LG
or Samsung TV, select a
credenza, speakers and
receiver all controlled by
a Universal remote, and
schedule installation one
day next week.”
Others contact them
when they are getting
ready to build their home.
“This is the best time to
bring in your house plans,
before you are too far
along.”
Kole Digital, located at
10355 W. Lincoln Highway
in Frankfort, is a
definite must-see for new
homeowners or those looking
to renovate or finish
their basement. For an exceptionally
high standard
Superior Cabinet Supply’s customers give good feedback
Superior Cabinet Supply
is approaching its 33rd
year providing Americanmade
cabinetry and countertops
to homeowners,
contractors and builders.
Superior Cabinet’s roots
started in Park Forest in
May of 1985, as Superior
Cabinet & Window. In
2006, Frank Klauck, owner
and president, opened
his second location, Superior
Cabinet Supply,
at 19800 S. Harlem in
Frankfort – just north of
Lincoln-Way North High
School in Harlem Crossings
Shopping Center.
Klauck was a carpentry
contractor for 10 years,
before starting the cabinet
and window business in
Park Forest. By 1990, he
began phasing out home
building and construction
projects and focused more
on his role as a window
contractor and kitchen and
bath dealer who served
homebuilders, contractors
and homeowners directly.
Klauck’s wife, Sandy,
has worked with him for 18
years at both showrooms.
She said word-of-mouth
referrals comprise the bulk
of their business. Approximately
85 percent of their
new customers come from
referrals by homeowners
and contractors.
“When we receive personalized,
handwritten
thank you cards and online
reviews, it is truly rewarding
to us,” she said.
The following email and
Yelp review exemplify the
customer satisfaction Superior
Cabinet strives for:
“Hi Frank —
I cannot thank you and
Superior Cabinet Supply
enough! The design of
my kitchen is just
perfect for me. The layout
of the cabinets has a great
flow, and everything I need
is at arm’s reach.
I love my new kitchen!
Frank, I appreciate your
design work and incorporating
everything that
I wanted in my kitchen
remodel. My walk-in pantry
is awesome, and using
cabinet doors as an invisible
entrance makes it
blend in beautifully with
the utility cabinets on both
sides. This is my ‘hidden
gem’ for storage. The
cabinets with the pull-outs
are great. No more getting
down on the floor to
find things. Thanks again,
Frank and Superior Cabinet,
for making this experience
an enjoyable one,
and the finished product a
beautiful kitchen.
Pat and Ken — Tinley
Park”
“When my husband
and I decided to remodel
our kitchen, we visited at
least 10 cabinet companies.
Amazingly, we found
Frank and his wife, Sandy,
close to our home! Frank
was a carpenter contractor,
and his knowledge and
skill was a decisive factor.
Frank also came to our
home, measured and gave
us his opinion prior to our
commitment to purchase.
We were very pleased with
his pricing. I had quotes
for the exact cabinet manufacturer
from companies
located in Bradley and
Tinley Park, and Frank’s
pricing was about 15 percent
less! Throughout the
process, Frank and Sandy
were friendly, knowledgeable
and professional. I
also appreciated the lack
of a hard sale. This is a
family-owned company
that takes pride in delivering
what is promised. It
has been a pleasure working
with Superior Cabinet
Supply.
Toni S. — Frankfort”
in-store planning and design
consultations, threedimensional
and installation services.
22ndCenturyMedia.com
A note from Jim with Lindholm Roofing
Has your home lost its curb appeal ...
to you?
My neighbor across the street has been
trying to sell her home for nearly three
years now. Inside, it is beautiful. Granite
counter tops, hardwood floors, multiple
fireplaces, updated bathrooms with the
latest fixtures, and the list goes on.
People who do the virtual tour or eventually
see the home’s interior are duly
impressed. And yet no reasonable offers.
Why?
Even though she’s in the real estate
business, she broke a cardinal rule: just
like people, your home makes a first impression,
and it’s exterior is what does
this.
That happens when others pull up a picture
online or get a real-time look from
one’s driveway.
In her case, maybe the peeling paint on
the siding or missing and curling shingles
have something to do with it. Or, perhaps
its the porch that looks more like a deck.
Not to overlook the chimney that needs
rebuilding, the 90-foot asphalt driveway
with a half dozen potholes or the missing
overhead garage doors. And this list goes
on, too.
Let’s face it, improving or maintaining
the exterior of your home is not a priority
for many of us. Its not “sexy” or very
brag-worthy to mention the ‘’beautiful’
new roof you just got, especially when
your friends keep going on and on about
their new bathroom or kitchen.
The choices of different exterior materials
for the middle class homeowner are
much more limited when compared to
selections for inside projects. For many
people, there is just not much fun in picking
siding out. And certainly little exercising
or flexing of one’s creative muscle.
And then, there may be a few other trials.
I am sure you have heard horror stories
of the window salesman who would
not leave. Or, perhaps, you yourself were
the victim of one who’s aftershave or cologne
lingered in your kitchen for days.
Or you may have had the experience of
hearing these words from the foreman:
“It’s no problem. I fix.”
Taking care of the outside of one’s
home is more a need or a necessity than
a want or desire. It is very utilitarian to
make sure your gutters drain properly, the
roof does not leak or your windows are
not wasting your heating dollars. And yet,
there is a certain majesty in the simplicity
of an exterior project well done.
Admit it, you feel it when you pull into
your driveway that first week or two after
its completion. Whether it is your pride as
a conscientious homeowner coming out
or just the relief of having handled a longstanding
problem, its a good feeling. And
if you are new to choosing a contractor or
completing a project of this sort, do not
worry; you’re in good hands.
At Lindholm, it is our desire to give
you this feeling. To make your exterior remodeling
or replacement project go right.
The project coordinators that come out
to visit you and assist you are courteous
and knowledgeable professionals with an
average of nearly 20 years experience in
exterior home improvement.
Our company has been in business and
owned by the same family for nearly 70
years. Because of this longevity, our record
of craftsmanship and attention to detail,
as well as our steadfast agreement to
honor our warranties, we have earned the
respect of many village building departments,
leading insurance companies, and
most importantly, from tens of thousands
of homeowners like yourself.
Let us be the one to help you with any
of these projects and help your home
make a good first impression.
Smith Crossing invests $450,000 in redecorated common areas
Changes in one’s immediate
surroundings can be
good for the soul: a splash
of new color here, some
new artwork there, maybe
a new sofa and chairs,
fresh fabric on seat cushions,
new blinds and new
flooring.
Residents in the assisted
cosmetic changes — all
designed to keep the ambiance
in their lifestyle settings
upbeat, positive and
vibrant.
“We switched out the
a style that feels more inviting
and energetic,” said
Frank Guajardo, executive
director for Smith Crossing.
The new decor includes
a range of neutral and vibrant
colors, including
milk chocolate brown,
grassy green, royal blue,
burnt orange and dark red.
Smith Crossing enlisted
the services of JRI Interior
Design, of Arlington
Heights, to manage
a $450,000 redecorating
project, which includes
corridors, dining areas,
reception areas and other
high-traffic common spaces.
Smith Crossing shares
a history with JRI. The
40-year-old firm provided
interior design services
when Smith Crossing was
first built in 2003 and
2004, and for its expansion,
which was completed
in January of 2013.
“We’re pleased our residents
like the fresh, new
look of our common areas,
and these spaces still
complement other areas
in our community not yet
ready to be redecorated,”
Guajardo added.
The new MechoShade
blinds, which reduce daytime
glare, are a big plus.
“Many people struggle
with glare,” Guajardo
said. “Before, we had to
close blinds and draperies,
which just made common
areas very dark. Now, we
lower the Mecho blinds,
which are more like
screens, and everyone can
still enjoy plenty of light.
Right now, they can still
see the green trees and colorful
flowers of summer.”
In the lobby area, a
vaulted ceiling is balanced
with soft brown and blue
wall coverings for a more
cozy and intimate experience.
The new tones also
bring out the white trim
and woodwork.
A luxury vinyl floor
with distinctive faux-wood
patterns replaces carpet
in a corridor with heavy
kitchen traffic. The more
durable flooring is easier
to keep clean. The corridor
also features the Mecho
blinds and new LED lighting.
In dining areas and parlors,
new carpet delivers
all the bright colors in the
new palette with a pattern
that’s more contemporary.
Dining room chairs reupholstered
with different
patterns add interest and
avoid the uniformity that
sometimes sets in with
large dining spaces.
More modern-shaped
furnishings replace traditional
wing-back chairs
and large sofas. And new
artwork brightens the
walls.
The nurses’ station in
the skilled nursing area
now appears more welcoming
and open, with an
area containing a table and
chairs where residents and
family members can meet
to review health information.
For more private matters,
Smith Crossing still
offers private consulting
rooms, as well.
Judy Biberian, owner
of JRI Interior Design,
recommends redecorating
high-traffic areas every
five to eight years.
Smith Crossing always
has invested in high-quality
carpet and furnishings.
The community also has
taken pains to keep these
The Granite and Marble Depot
makes granite purchase,
installation as simple as can be
Granite and Marble Depot
is one of Chicagoland’s
premier granite shops.
It utilizes the highestquality
material and the
latest fabrication and installation
techniques. Not
all granite fabricators are
the same. Fabrication and
installation are greatly affected
by the technology
and techniques utilized by
the individual fabricator.
The Granite and Marble
Depot can provide customers
with a pamphlet
that will inform them on
why they should select the
Granite and Marble Depot
for their natural stone
countertops and tile needs.
When granite is delivered
into Granite and
Marble Depot’s facility,
it is quality inspected by
Granite and Marble Depot
technicians. Once the slabs
arrive and pass the company’s
rigorous inspection,
its professional designers
contact customers regarding
viewing their slabs and
going over the cuts, seam
location and final verification
of design selections.
Customers are invited to
participate in the process
every step of the way to
ensure satisfaction with
the final product.
Final milling, shaping
and all sink cutouts are
completed using Granite
and Marble Depot’s Breton
CNC. Breton is one
of the leading and largest
manufacturers of stone
machinery in the world,
and they set the standard
for the stone fabrication
industry. Sink templates
are downloaded from the
manufacturer’s website,
and cutouts are made in
strict accordance with the
sink supplier’s guideline.
Granite countertops
are installed by one of the
store’s professional installation
crews. All installers
are employed by GMD, and
it does not contract out any
of its work. All installations
are preformed according to
the highest standards and as
recommended by the Marble
Institute of America.
The Granite and Marble
Depot’s showroom in Mokena
displays more than
200 natural stone colors,
engineered stone colors,
fireplaces, sinks, faucets,
tile and more. Its professional
staff includes architects
and designers
committed to helping customers
get the desired look
for their home.
Easy and quick, GMD
makes it an easy, threestep
process.
Step 1 involves choosing
the perfect stone design.
The Granite and
Marble Depot offers a
free consultation at a customer’s
home, office or
its showroom to discuss
needs and suggest ideas.
GMD highly recommends
that customers bring a
sketch of the project to
its showroom. It is a good
idea to bring a cabinet
sample and paint color, as
well. A GMD consultant
can help customers choose
the right stone, as there are
hundreds of colors from
which to choose.
Step 2 is placing the order.
To place an order with
GMD, it requires customers
to have the following
steps complete in their
home. Cabinets need to be
installed. All of the appliances
in the kitchen need
to be on location. The sink
needs to be on location
so that GMD may take it
as a template for the sink
cutout. Once the above
requirements are satisfied,
GMD can come out
to measure/template the
kitchen. The installers will
work with customers to
make sure all the specifications
and technical details
are provided.
The last and final piece
of the puzzle, Step 3, is
the installation. The homeowner
must be present for
installation. GMD will
install the countertop and
backsplash.
Lastly, it will drill the
faucet holes, attach the sink
and mount the dishwasher.
A roof inspection can
protect homes from
fall weather and save
homeowners money
Ready for fall? Homeowners
may think they
are, but have they checked
their roofs recently?
Roofs are a home’s first
defense against wind and
rain. A good, solid roof
will protect a home from
the ravages of fall and
winter weather for many
years.
This time of year, roofs
take a beating, as they are
exposed to a variety of
unpleasant weather conditions
from cold, windy
days, to heavy, gusty
downpours, to snow and
ice storms. Everyone’s
roof must be ready to handle
it all.
Homeowners should not
let the outside conditions
impact the inside of their
homes. The roof is one
of a homeowner’s largest
investments for his or her
home. A small roof leak
today can lead to a major
water problem tomorrow.
Missing shingles provide
pathways for rain
and melting snow to make
their way into a home. A
homeowner’s roof must
be watertight. Homeowners
should make sure their
roofs are ready for the upcoming
seasons by having
Prusak Roofing, Inc. provide
them with a free roof
inspection.
Prusak’s free roof inspection
will provide
homeowners with a thorough
assessment of the
condition of their roofs.
Prusak Roofing completes
a detailed inspection of a
home’s roof, gutters, fascia
and soffit systems.
Minor roof issues can
generally be repaired at a
reasonable cost and extend
the life of most roofs. The
inspection takes a short
time, but can add years to
the life of a roof and provide
the homeowner with
confidence that his or her
roof is ready to withstand
the challenges of the upcoming
seasons.
Sometimes, Prusak
Roofing will inspect a roof
and find that it is damaged
due to the age of the
shingles, storm damage or
animal intrusion. A roof
inspection will detect these
types of problems, and
Prusak Roofing will recommend
a solution before
a homeowner finds him or
herself with water entering
his or her roof, causing
thousands of dollars in
damage to one’s home.
Homeowners can trust
Prusak Roofing with their
roof. Prusak Roofing is the
contractor of choice for
thousands of new and repeat
customers throughout
Chicago and the suburbs.
They have been in business
for more than 50 years,
and they remain familyowned
Better Business Bureau.
A homeowner who
thinks his or her home may
have storm damage from
the heavy wind and rains
this spring, or if damage is
discovered during the roof
inspection, Prusak Roofing
will work with the homeowner’s
insurance company
to assist him or her in
the claims process.
Prusak Roofing is committed
to their customers
and providing professional
roofing and repairs. Customer
satisfaction is guaranteed.
Prusak Roofing’s
customers receive a positive
experience from beginning
to end. They carry
worker’s compensation
and liability insurance.
Prusak offers roofing
and siding services that include
new roofs, tear-offs,
re-roofs, new siding/gutters
and downspouts, roofing
and siding repairs, gutter
cleaning, and blown-in
insulation service. They
also offer an annual maintenance
program that can
add years to roofs, siding
and gutters.
Seigle’s has a history
of satisfied customers
The first Seigle’s Center
(Elgin Lumber Company)
was established in 1881 by
a group of prominent Elgin
businessmen led by the
Borden dairy family, who
recognized the need for a
well-supplied lumber yard
in their expanding community.
In 2005, Seigle’s was
acquired by Stock Building
Supply, becoming
part of the nation’s largest
building material dealer. In
light of market conditions,
Stock exited the market.
With the closure, in
2009, Mark Seigle and his
family reacquired the cabinetry
operation, and today
they are the largest distributor
of kitchen and bath
cabinetry and countertops
in the Chicago market.
Timing is everything
in the cabinetry business,
from design and quoting
all the way through shipment
of the order, professional
installation and requisite
follow-up deliveries.
Seigle’s Cabinet Center
is the only distributor to
stock all the necessary inventory
and has its own
fleet of trucks in order to
control the timeliness of
delivery.
Of course, Seigle’s handles
the best brands known
for their consistent performance,
New Lenox-based
business works to make
clothes dryers safer
Hidden buildup in
clothes dryer vent
is fire hazard
Most people know they
need to clean out their
dryer lint tray between
each cycle, but what lurks
behind the wall is just as
important for safety and
avoiding fire traps, as well
as fully efficient dryer performance.
Joe Enzenberger, owner
of Dryer Vent Wizard,
opened his New Lenoxbased
business in 2009 to
help make dryers safer.
Lint is the villain —
lint that has been allowed
to build up and linger too
long in the dryer exhaust
vent. It is estimated by the
U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission and
the U.S. Fire Administration
that 15,500 fires associated
with clothes dryers
occur annually. These fires
account for an average of
20 deaths, 370 injuries and
more than $88 million in
property damage.
“Failure to clean the
dryer vent” was the leading
factor cited in U.S. Fire
Administration reports.
“It is something very
few people know about or
think about,” said Enzenberger,
whose company
specializes in dryer vent
cleaning, repair, alteration
and installation. “It is
the leading cause of dryer
fires.”
Lint accumulation also
can cause dryers to stop
working or to work inefficiently.
A dryer vent
clogged with lint can add
as much as $18-$24 per
month to energy costs.
“Improper venting
causes problems, as well,”
he said. “The dryer exhaust
duct and connections
should be made of rigid
metal or semi-rigid metal
and secured with metal,
heat-resistant tape, rather
than duct tape. I often find
plastic or foil, accordiontype
material, which can
easily trap lint and is more
susceptible to kinks and
crushing.”
Warning signs include:
•Clothes are taking more
than one cycle to dry,
especially jeans and
towels.
•No lint is visible on the
lint screen.
•Dryer repeatedly stops
during a cycle.
•Clothes have moldy smell
after a dry cycle.
•Clothes are very hot after
a dry cycle.
•The top of the dryer is hot
to the touch while running.
•There’s excess lint left on
clothing.
“This has been a consumer
education process,
but it’s hard to get the
word out,” Enzenberger
said. “Most don’t call until
they have a serious problem
with their dryer.”
He suggests people
treat clothes dryers as a
household item in need of
regular maintenance. Consumers
can protect dryer
performance and promote
safety by cleaning the lint
screen between each use,
ensuring the connection
between the dryer and
wall is made of compliant
material and remains
unkinked, and having the
dryer exhaust duct cleaned
regularly. Dryer manufacturers
recommend inspection
and cleaning at least
annually.
Now is the perfect time
to have an inspection and
cleaning of clothes dryers
and dryer vent systems.
Another important tip:
never let a clothes dryer
run when everyone is out
of the house or asleep.
River Road Tops has offered custom
cabinets, countertops since 1994
River Road Tops first
opened its doors in Lemont
in 1994. Since then, they
have expanded their space
and business and moved to
Lockport, 3341 S. State St.
They are a family-owned
and operated business that
has been open for 18 years.
Their expanding showroom
is designed to showcase
several different materials,
colors and designs
that are available. They
extend quality service to
their customers, as well as
offer custom and personal
advice on home design.
They specialize in custom
cabinets and countertops
for any residential or
commercial space. Offering
custom cabinets and
countertops means having
a lot more space, as well as
several different options.
They present their customers
with a wide variety of
products. Besides cabinets
and countertops, they also
specialize in custom kitchens
and baths, entertainment
centers, fireplaces
and wall units. They are
proud to present their customers
with quality materials,
such as granite,
marble, quartz, limestone,
solid surface, laminate and
more.
They feel their business
American Financial Network helps
customers get their best mortgage
Todd Probasco, regional manager mortgage
banker with American Financial
Network in Orland Park, enjoys helping
his clients buy or refinance
their homes.
“I love real estate,
the mortgage industry
and helping my clients
achieve their goals,”
Probasco said.
When it comes to getting
a new mortgage,
Probasco said there are
several factors a homeowner
should take into
consideration when
choosing a new loan.
Is the loan officer
State-licensed? Banks,
credit unions and individuals are not. Licensed
mortgage bankers must complete
a comprehensive mortgage license education
requirement, pass a national exam,
have credit and background checks completed
and maintain continuing education.
Evaluate mortgage options. There are
several different types of mortgage programs
available based on length, fixed
versus adjustable, down payment and
rate. Customers should have the licensed
loan officer go over all of the options to
satisfied customers. Most
of the work that has been
done at River Road Tops
is through referrals from
all of their satisfied clients.
The owner, Richard, helps
one throughout the entire
process. Whether it may
be picking out a material,
style or even color, Richard
feels that working with
the customer from start to
finish leads to the right design.
see what is best for them and their real estate
goals.
Experience. This is very important,
because when getting a
new mortgage, customers
are probably dealing
with the largest business
transaction in their life.
Make sure the licensed
loan officer has the
years of experience and
knowledge to help customers
complete their
transactions smoothly
and easily.
Is the licensed loan
officer local? When getting
a new mortgage, it
is best to deal with someone local who
knows the market, can meet in person,
has local references to be reviewed and is
available when the customer has a question.
Dealing with an 800 number or website
out of state can create issues in communication
and execution.
How smart home technology
can help eliminate stress
this school year
BY STATEPOINT MEDIA
A BETTER
DOOR & WINDOW
Your source for one of America’s most
trusted brands of windows and patio doors.
Many parents have
worries around the backto-school
season, especially
if children will be
alone for a portion of the
afternoon or in the morning
before catching the
bus.
What if a better eye
could be kept on things
when the parent or homeowner
is not physically
there? Here are some ways
to use smart home technology
to simplify daily routines
and minimize stress,
knowing the children are
safe.
Start with a hub
A hub is like the brain
of the home tech and connects
to the router, allowing
devices like locks,
thermostats and lighting
to communicate with one
another. The hub can even
send notifications to a
mobile phone, so anyone
can monitor and control
their home remotely. With
hubs such as SmartThings,
Wink or Nexia, setting up
your devices and customizations
is simple. However,
you may prefer a hub
disguised as security panels,
such as ADT Pulse or
Vivint, or those that work
with popular voice speakers,
such as Amazon Echo
and Google Home.
Customize
Scenes are an easy way
to sync smart devices to
perform a series of actions
that make life more convenient.
For example, wake
the children with a “good
morning” scene that turns
lights on and plays music
via an Echo or Google
Home.
Worried about energy
bills? Keep children from
cranking the air after
school with a smart thermostat,
which lets anyone
control the temperature
throughout the day.
After homework and
chores are complete, a
voice control assistant will
keep kids entertained with
music, and a movie scene
can lower lights and turn
on speakers. Finish the day
with a “good night scene,”
that shuts off lights, lowers
the temperature, locks the
doors and arms the security
system.
Think safety
A smart home can keep
a watchful eye on children.
Smart door locks like
Schlage or Kwikset eliminate
the need for children
to keep track of house keys
and let the parent know if
they forget to lock the door
when they leave. When
they get home, the parent
will receive a notification
letting them know they’ve
arrived safely.
Security-focused solutions
like the Piper
NV camera and hub or
Abode’s DIY security solution
alert when someone
enters and exits, and they
even provide video clips to
the parent’s phone. Smart
sensors, such as those
from Aeotec, can notify
whenever a window, door
or even a cabinet drawer is
opened.
During emergencies,
children can press Fibaro’s
Button device to activate
an emergency scene that
signals an alarm and sends
a notification to the parent’s
phone indicating they
need help.
Future-proof tech
Smart home tech doesn’t
have to be expensive; anyone
can start small with a
hub and a few devices and
add more as needs change.
Just be sure all devices can
talk to one another now
and in the future. With
Z-Wave technology, for
example, devices from different
manufacturers can
communicate, no matter
where they were bought,
so consider looking for the
Z-Wave logo when shopping
for smart home technology.
For smart home
ideas and customer support,
visit www.z-wave.
com.
Alleviate back-to-school
stress with new tools that
help keep the children safe
and streamline a parent’s
day.
Making fall yard updates with AreA is as easy as 1-2-3
1. Seed. Bare spots around the lawn may
have been bothersome for most of the
summer. Now is the time to address
them. Temperatures are cooling to a
more adequate level for grass-growing
and tend to stay pretty consistent in
the fall. Plus, throughout the winter
months, grass roots will continue to
develop. It could take three-to-five
weeks for desired results, so be patient.
At AreA Landscape Supply, one can
choose from four seed combination
varieties for the perfect match.
2. Fertilize. Aim for fertilizer application
during the second half of this month.
This will deposit a dose of “vitamins”
into the soil. Once there, the grass will
soak up the nutrients at a slow — but
steady — pace during the winter.
The result? The lawn will be greener,
faster in spring 2018! AreA’s fertilizer
choices include: all-purpose, seed
starter, four-step program, etc.
3. Mulch. Organic mulch, such as
premium hardwood varieties, has
benefits year-round, but during the
winter months, it acts as an insulator.
Keep plants warm during cold and
snowy months with a blanket of
mulch. A three-inch thickness is ideal.
Mulches are available either bagged
or in bulk by the yard. Ask AreA
Landscape Supply about estimated
product coverage.
Interested in more than fall yard prep?
There is still time for patio updates and
installations. AreA’s Outdoor Idea Center
has fireplaces and pit kits on display! Visit
to see gas logs, fire glass, mesh screens,
cooking grates and other accessories.
Homeowners attempting outdoor projects
can call or stop into AreA with their
questions. The experienced sales staff
can help estimate material needed, recommend
the best product and even give
a checklist of steps to follow for installation.
The staff can even recommend a
suitable landscaper or contractor to complete
any project successfully.
Dream it. Do it. Enjoy it! AreA Landscape
Supply in Mokena has been proudly
serving the community since 1996, helping
individuals and their neighbors build the
landscape of their dreams. Supplying quality
hardscape materials, such as Unilock
brick pavers, premium hardwood mulch,
retaining wall block and decorative stone
has been important from the very beginning.
Providing knowledge and tools for
successful do-it-yourself projects is also a
high priority.
1-DAY RECOAT goes high-tech, and homeowners save
Good news for homeowners
who want an impressive finish
and extreme durability that’s affordable!
Nanotechnology has come to
floor restoration, and the results
are nothing short of amazing! I
will explain this in just a bit.
As homeowners know, their
hardwood floors dull, scuff and
get surface scratches as a result
of normal, everyday living. Add
kids and pets to the mix — an
extreme use situation — and the
wear-and-tear multiplies. Floors
are left vulnerable to stains and
dirt build-up.
Once faced with floors having
an overall cloudy appearance
or any combination of the
conditions mentioned above, the
homeowner, until now, has had
limited and expensive choices
to fix the situation. At around $3
per square foot or more, the two
most common include:
1. Resanding — a messy job
with dust, fumes (sometimes
toxic) and inconvenient time
frames. It can take up to a week
to complete a project.
2. Replacing worn-out floors
— there is less dust and fumes,
but it still takes days or weeks
to finish.
Both options are expensive,
and it’s not surprising that most
homeowners avoid fixing their
floors for as long as possible.
The better option is 1-DAY
RECOAT.
1-DAY RECOAT is the hardwood
floor restoration system
that is the fast, safe, economical
and most durable way to keep
hardwood floors looking new.
Here are some advantages to using
1-DAY RECOAT:
•1-DAY RECOAT uses new
nanotechnology finishes for
extreme durability and clarity.
The exciting news about
“nanotech” is that it allows the
polymers in the coating, at the
molecular level, to link together
forming a strong, impervious
shield against moisture
and dirt. And, because these
linked molecules are stronger
than regular polymers, they
resist scuffing and surface
scratches better than any other
coating on the market.
•1-DAY RECOAT costs less
than resand or replace options
— usually less than 98 cents
per square foot. There is also
less time and less mess.
•1-DAY RECOAT water-based
finishes are “green” engineered
to be environmentally
friendly, low odor, low VOC
(275 VOC) and extremely fastdrying
— 90 percent cured in
24 hours. And, the whole process
is safer for family and
pets, too. These coatings meet
and/or exceed the standards
set by the U.S. Green Building
Council and Leadership
in Energy and Environmental
Design.
•1-DAY RECOAT has multiple
coating grades. The homeowner
to gets the best coating
for their floor’s traffic patterns.
The finishes range from light
traffic to floors that endure
heavy traffic and large pets.
•1-DAY RECOAT can recoat
most factory-finished and/or
pre-finished floors. There is a
big myth about the inability
to recoat pre-finished or prestained
floors. Advances in
coating technology have busted
this myth.
•1-DAY RECOAT offers a free
consultation. This session is
a no-risk, no-obligation, nocharge
meeting to determine
the condition and traffic patterns
of the floors and discuss
any other factors that could influence
the project.
Open plan kitchen boasts feeling of
open, clear, light space
An open plan kitchen
is the perfect match for
almost any Orland Park
homeowner. It is open, casual
and free flowing. But
kitchen designs weren’t
always that way. What was
once considered a strictly
utilitarian space — hidden
behind closed doors and
disconnected from other
rooms — has become a
full-fledged member of the
home’s design scheme.
Lifestyle changes precede
the open kitchen layout
A more traditional lifestyle,
the one that baby
boomers grew up in, had
fathers working, mothers
staying at home with the
children. Meals were eaten
in the dining room; there
were only four channels
on the TV, and no video
games. Computers hadn’t
yet been invented. Well,
those days are gone. We
are casual in everything
we do, family members
are always on the go, each
needing to get things done
and a place to do them. In
this on-the-go lifestyle, the
kitchen is a Grand Central
Station for family activities
of all kinds.
This is where the kids
do their homework during
the week, where you have
friends over for dinner on
Saturday and where you
watch football on Sunday.
Today, everyone cooks. In
fact, having space for more
than one cook is high on
many wish lists. This means
that space must be found
so that two people don’t
continually bump into each
other. This space isn’t usually
inside the confines of
The importance of an
island in the open plan
kitchen
Open plan kitchens —
with their adjacent family
rooms, great rooms or casual
living spaces — led
to the use of kitchen islands.
Islands do important
things. They add useful
counter space to the kitchen
and provide an almost automatic
location for a second
sink or cooktop closer to
a sink. Islands add storage
space, cut down the walking
distances between work
centers and establish traffic
patterns that direct people
easily through the kitchen
and out of the cook’s way.
Large islands function
like big tables, providing
room to eat or to put food
out for buffet parties. Islands
are also natural room
dividers. In open plans,
they are shared elements
between rooms, with specialized
storage on both
sides. They are also a
shared design element.
An open plan kitchen is the
heart of the home
The kitchen is the heart
of the home; it has always
been so. In the 21st century,
kitchens are expanding
and becoming the welcoming
focal point of family
life and a family-oriented
lifestyle. What has evolved
is the notion of the kitchen
as the heart of the home.
An open plan kitchen fully
encapsulates that notion.
Making a home safer in wicked weather
BY STATEPOINT MEDIA
Wicked weather can
happen anytime, anywhere.
Being prepared
will offer a family and
home greater protection.
Here is what to know.
Take shelter
Oftentimes, the safest
place to be during a storm
is at home or in a designated
shelter, depending on the
storm’s severity. That said,
it’s important to know more
about how a home was constructed.
Keep in mind that
new homes are subject to
regional safety standards to
help ensure they can stand
up to extreme conditions
likely to occur in the area.
So, if living in an older
home, consider retrofitting
it with newer products that
are more resistant to high
winds.
If living in a manufactured
home, rest easier
knowing that the home
was subject to robust compliance
and quality assurance
regulations enacted
by the federal government
in 1976 and was engineered
for wind safety and
energy efficiency based on
the geographic region in
which it was bought.
Even so, proper installation
is crucial for maximum
safety, including additional
structures added
by the homeowner, such
as an awning, deck, carport
or sunroom. Indeed,
a 2014 Insurance Institute
for Business & Home
Safety test found that newer
manufactured homes
performed better at high
winds than traditionalbuilt
homes when attached
structures are properly installed.
The Manufactured
Housing Institute says the
building design criteria
and anchoring systems
for modern manufactured
homes allow them to perform
better in a storm than
ones built before 1976, and
that federal wind standards
became even stronger in
1994.
It’s also a good idea to
have a professional check
the anchoring system on
an older manufactured
home, especially one built
prior to 1976. If living in a
manufactured home landlease
community, contact
the community manager
for assistance with identifying
a qualified inspector.
If the manufactured home
is located on private property,
a local licensed manufactured
home installer
can be hired to inspect
the home’s anchoring and
tie-down system. To learn
more, visit www.manufac
turedhousing.org.
Get stocked up
Taking shelter in a storm
is easier when you are
equipped to do so. Maintain
a well-stocked supply
of nonperishable food
items, fresh water, batteries
and a first-aid kit.
It may also be wise to
purchase a generator; however,
it’s crucial to follow
the manufacturer’s safety
instructions and never to
operate the generator in an
enclosed space.
Tune in
Listen to local news to
get the latest weather updates
and safety instructions.
Keep a batteryoperated
radio handy to
stay up-to-date even if the
power should go out for a
long period.
Today’s weather forecasting
technologies often
provide advance notice
of weather patterns capable
of producing conditions
such as severe wind
and tornadoes, so one can
know whether it’s time to
seek shelter in the basement
or evacuate the area.
If a home, site-built or
manufactured, does not
have a below-ground basement,
have a plan in place
to seek below-ground or
other appropriate shelter
nearby when necessary.
It’s also important to follow
evacuation orders
when issued.
While a storm is not
preventable, being unprepared
for one is.
One-of-a-kind in Homer — glass floor or glass ceiling?
Those who have ventured
inside Sheri Law Art
Glass may have looked up
and seen the glass ceiling
as they view through to
the upper level. Or, if they
have a spirit of adventure,
they might have stepped
out on the glass floor looking
down to the conference
room. Some say, “Wow, it
takes your breath away.”
The answer is that it is
both a floor and ceiling!
Those who have driven
past for years and wondered
what Sheri Law Art
Glass did, they are glass
artists! This team of artists
are changing what’s
between the floor and
ceiling. It’s the windows,
doors and walls that the
artists find inspiring and
provocative.
Art is an essential component
of any home, and
starting to add art can be
perplexing. The designers
at this studio work together
with the customer, discovering
their décor space
and the impact the art will
have on the room. Step by
step, it makes the selection
process easier, and the end
result is exactly what was
envisioned — just with a
little help from a glass designer.
Lighting, wall space and
room décor are all factors
that will affect how, where
and when a piece of art
will be viewed. The most
interesting detail is what
they call “retrofit.” An
example would be a bathroom
window — they can
create a stunning art glass
that will go on top of the
existing windows — and,
magically, the customer
has a beautiful focal point,
with the amount of privacy
needed, professionally
installed. Another plus
is that if someone ever
moves, they could take it
with them!
Along with beveled,
stained and carved glass,
fused glass and antique
mirror have taken the forefront.
From cabinet doors,
sidelights and wall art,
there are designs to coordinate
with the decorating
style for any room of the
home; even the kitchen
with a backsplash.
Those wanting to discuss
a project are recommended
to make an appointment.
In the studio,
one can experience all the
techniques firsthand, review
budgets, schedules
and all the details.
While the majority of
Sheri Law’s work is residential,
they hold a place
in many commercial spaces.
anniversary in October,
Sheri Law said, “It’s not
just about the Art Glass
we create, but how it is enhanced
with natural light,
the spectacle of prisms
cast on the wall or the ambiance
of a lighted project.”
