big the place is. When one 

enters, he or she is greeted

tour of the 13,000-squarefoot

Customers can experience 

two fully automated 

smart homes, a lighting 

studio, several gourmet 

kitchens and audio demonstration 

rooms, and five 

spectacular home theaters. 

Each theater has a different 

theme, from the futuristic 

Galaxy, to the art deco 

Paradise, to the gentlemen’s 

club-inspired Majestic. 

The grand finale is a 

two-story Chicago Theater 

replica, complete with a 

balcony. 

Each is exquisitely 

crafted with high-quality 

materials, like stone columns, 

acoustic treatment, 

custom glass and metalwork. 

There are lighting 

options everywhere, and 

each ceiling is unique — 

one has a beautiful fiber 

optic starfield. It’s like a 

Disneyland for adults. 

The second floor has a 

furniture showroom with 

more than 50 theater chairs 

from which to choose, plus 

several sectionals and 

credenzas. Then, tour the 

offices, where the CAD 

designers work on plans 

for several basements and 

their 410th theater. Also, 

see where the finishes are 

selected — carpet, fabric, 

tile, paint, custom cabinetry 

and more. 

It does not stop there. 

Kole Digital started 18 

years ago out of Rob’s 

own home in Homer Glen, 

and they were the first in 

the area to specialize in 

smart homes that feature 

lighting control, climate, 

motorized window treatments 

and more. 

Today, they offer every 

conceivable home control 

product. From an iPad, 

customers can view cameras, 

unlock a door, arm 

a security system, select a 

Pandora station and control

they train what must be 

the most talented installers 

and programmers in their 

field.

has a passion for what he 

does, and has his hands in 

every design (they have 54 

current projects and five 

basements under construction). 

He will also tell you that 

no job is too small. 

“Some people walk 

in, purchase a Sony, LG 

or Samsung TV, select a 

credenza, speakers and 

receiver all controlled by 

a Universal remote, and 

schedule installation one 

day next week.”

when they are getting 

ready to build their home.

A note from Jim with Lindholm Roofing 

Has your home lost its curb appeal ... 

to you? 

My neighbor across the street has been 

trying to sell her home for nearly three 

years now. Inside, it is beautiful. Granite 

counter tops, hardwood floors, multiple 

fireplaces, updated bathrooms with the 

latest fixtures, and the list goes on. 

People who do the virtual tour or eventually 

see the home’s interior are duly 

impressed. And yet no reasonable offers. 

Why? 

Even though she’s in the real estate 

business, she broke a cardinal rule: just 

like people, your home makes a first impression, 

and it’s exterior is what does 

this. 

That happens when others pull up a picture 

online or get a real-time look from 

one’s driveway. 

In her case, maybe the peeling paint on 

the siding or missing and curling shingles 

have something to do with it. Or, perhaps

blinds, which reduce daytime

close blinds and draperies, 

which just made common 

areas very dark. Now, we 

lower the Mecho blinds,

screens, and everyone can

flowers of summer.” 

In the lobby area, a 

vaulted ceiling is balanced 

with soft brown and blue 

wall coverings for a more 

cozy and intimate experience. 

The new tones also 

bring out the white trim 

and woodwork. 

A luxury vinyl floor 

with distinctive faux-wood 

patterns replaces carpet 

in a corridor with heavy 

kitchen traffic. The more 

durable flooring is easier 

to keep clean. The corridor 

also features the Mecho 

blinds and new LED lighting. 

In dining areas and parlors, 

new carpet delivers 

all the bright colors in the 

new palette with a pattern 

that’s more contemporary. 

Dining room chairs reupholstered 

with different 

patterns add interest and 

avoid the uniformity that 

sometimes sets in with 

large dining spaces. 

More modern-shaped 

furnishings replace traditional 

wing-back chairs 

and large sofas. And new 

artwork brightens the 

walls. 

The nurses’ station in 

the skilled nursing area 

now appears more welcoming 

and open, with an 

area containing a table and 

chairs where residents and

To place an order with

cutout. Once the above 

requirements are satisfied, 

GMD can come out 

to measure/template the

The last and final piece 

of the puzzle, Step 3, is

must be present for

clothes dryers safer 

Hidden buildup in 

clothes dryer vent 

is fire hazard 

Most people know they 

need to clean out their 

dryer lint tray between 

each cycle, but what lurks 

behind the wall is just as 

important for safety and 

avoiding fire traps, as well 

as fully efficient dryer performance. 

Joe Enzenberger, owner 

of Dryer Vent Wizard, 

opened his New Lenoxbased 

business in 2009 to 

help make dryers safer. 

Lint is the villain — 

lint that has been allowed 

to build up and linger too 

long in the dryer exhaust 

vent. It is estimated by the 

U.S. Consumer Product 

Safety Commission and 

the U.S. Fire Administration 

that 15,500 fires associated 

with clothes dryers 

occur annually. These fires 

account for an average of 

20 deaths, 370 injuries and 

more than $88 million in 

property damage. 

“Failure to clean the 

dryer vent” was the leading 

factor cited in U.S. Fire 

Administration reports. 

“It is something very 

few people know about or 

think about,” said Enzenberger, 

whose company 

specializes in dryer vent 

cleaning, repair, alteration 

and installation. “It is 

the leading cause of dryer 

fires.” 

Lint accumulation also 

can cause dryers to stop 

working or to work inefficiently. 

A dryer vent 

clogged with lint can add 

as much as $18-$24 per 

month to energy costs. 

“Improper venting 

causes problems, as well,” 

he said. “The dryer exhaust 

duct and connections 

should be made of rigid 

metal or semi-rigid metal 

and secured with metal, 

heat-resistant tape, rather 

than duct tape. I often find 

plastic or foil, accordiontype 

material, which can 

easily trap lint and is more 

susceptible to kinks and 

crushing.” 

Warning signs include: 

•Clothes are taking more 

than one cycle to dry, 

especially jeans and 

towels. 

•No lint is visible on the 

lint screen. 

•Dryer repeatedly stops 

during a cycle. 

•Clothes have moldy smell 

after a dry cycle. 

•Clothes are very hot after 

a dry cycle. 

•The top of the dryer is hot 

to the touch while running. 

•There’s excess lint left on 

clothing. 

“This has been a consumer 

education process, 

but it’s hard to get the 

word out,” Enzenberger 

said. “Most don’t call until 

they have a serious problem 

with their dryer.” 

He suggests people 

treat clothes dryers as a 

household item in need of 

regular maintenance. Consumers 

can protect dryer 

performance and promote 

safety by cleaning the lint 

screen between each use, 

ensuring the connection 

between the dryer and 

wall is made of compliant 

material and remains 

unkinked, and having the 

dryer exhaust duct cleaned 

regularly. Dryer manufacturers 

recommend inspection 

and cleaning at least 

annually. 

Now is the perfect time 

to have an inspection and 

cleaning of clothes dryers 

and dryer vent systems. 

Another important tip: 

never let a clothes dryer 

run when everyone is out 

of the house or asleep.

Making fall yard updates with AreA is as easy as 1-2-3 

1. Seed. Bare spots around the lawn may 

have been bothersome for most of the 

summer. Now is the time to address 

them. Temperatures are cooling to a 

more adequate level for grass-growing 

and tend to stay pretty consistent in 

the fall. Plus, throughout the winter 

months, grass roots will continue to 

develop. It could take three-to-five

Making a home safer in wicked weather

Being prepared 

will offer a family and 

home greater protection. 

Here is what to know. 

Take shelter 

Oftentimes, the safest 

place to be during a storm 

is at home or in a designated 

shelter, depending on the 

storm’s severity. That said, 

it’s important to know more 

about how a home was constructed. 

Keep in mind that 

new homes are subject to 

regional safety standards to 

help ensure they can stand 

up to extreme conditions 

likely to occur in the area. 

So, if living in an older 

home, consider retrofitting 

it with newer products that 

are more resistant to high 

winds. 

If living in a manufactured 

home, rest easier 

knowing that the home 

was subject to robust compliance 

and quality assurance 

regulations enacted 

by the federal government 

in 1976 and was engineered 

for wind safety and 

energy efficiency based on 

the geographic region in 

which it was bought. 

Even so, proper installation 

is crucial for maximum 

safety, including additional 

structures added 

by the homeowner, such 

as an awning, deck, carport 

or sunroom. Indeed, 

a 2014 Insurance Institute 

for Business & Home 

Safety test found that newer 

manufactured homes 

performed better at high 

winds than traditionalbuilt 

homes when attached 

structures are properly installed. 

The Manufactured 

Housing Institute says the 

building design criteria 

and anchoring systems 

for modern manufactured 

homes allow them to perform 

better in a storm than 

ones built before 1976, and 

that federal wind standards 

became even stronger in 

1994. 

It’s also a good idea to 

have a professional check 

the anchoring system on 

an older manufactured 

home, especially one built 

prior to 1976. If living in a 

manufactured home landlease 

community, contact 

the community manager 

for assistance with identifying 

a qualified inspector. 

If the manufactured home 

is located on private property, 

a local licensed manufactured 

home installer 

can be hired to inspect 

the home’s anchoring and

the manufacturer’s safety 

instructions and never to

enclosed space.

stay up-to-date even if the 

power should go out for a 

long period. 

Today’s weather forecasting

provide advance notice 

of weather patterns capable

and tornadoes, so one can 

know whether it’s time to 

seek shelter in the basement 

or evacuate the area.

artists find inspiring and
