Marriott
set to bring
Delta to Goa
Panaji: Betting big on Goa, Marriott
International is now planning to set
up hotels under the Canadian luxury
brand Delta in the state. The global
chain is eyeing tertiaty markets as it
looks to increase its market share in
the domestic hospitality sector.
With plans to open 15-20 new hotels
per year over the next five years
in India, Marriott International is
heading to Tier-III regions to cater
to the rising demand from a growing
middle class.
"We are looking at development
opportunities," says Marriott
International vice president (South
Asia), Neeraj Govil. "We have Delta,
a Canadian brand Marriott acquired
three years ago. We have signed a deal
for Delta in North Goa."
Though Govil refrained from
specifying where the resort will come
up, he indicated that it would not
be along the coastal belt or near the
upcoming international airport at
Mopa.
"Goa has phenomenal demand," he
said. "A new airport will open in a few
years which will drive in more people.
There is no off-season today. I don't see
demand for Goa abating right now. We
are quite bullish."
TOURISM MINISTRY
CONSIDERS SETTING
UP TOURISM OFFICES
IN US, UK, RUSSIA
NEW DELHI: The ministry of tourism
is considering setting up governmentrun
tourist offices in key markets such
as the US, UK and Russia in a bid to
attract more tourists to India.
The ministry will also set up tourist
facilitation centres to address queries
of tourists at airports in Delhi,
Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru,
tourism secretary Rashmi Verma.
With the Incredible India 2.0
campaign expected to be launched in
September, Verma said the ministry
will also run market specific campaigns
on it in different countries through
local and electronic channels and
digital media.
"We feel a synergy between the
Incredible India campaign and
different overseas markets will get us
better results. Our offices in different
countries would work on a hub and
spoke model which will be in sync
with our public relations agency.
This time the state governments are
also complementing our plans and
the industry can plan marketing
campaigns around it. Our spends are
higher than last year," said Verma.
Figures released from the tourism
ministry this month revealed that India
registered a 15% growth in foreign
tourist arrivals from January to July
this year: around 56.74 lakh tourists
visited the country between January
and July this year compared with 49.03
lakh in the same period last year.
The highest number of incoming
tourists were from Bangladesh (20.12%)
followed by the US (16.26%), the UK
(10.88%) and France (3.01%), the
ministry informed.
Foreign exchange earnings through
tourism during January to July this
year were Rs 1,02,082 crore compared
with Rs 87, 034 crore between January
and July last year.
Luxury cars,
SUVs will be
costlier as govt
clears cess
hike to 25%
SUVs and luxury cars will soon cost
more in India as the Union government
cleared on Wednesday an ordinance
to hike the maximum cess on vehicles
from 15% to 25%.
Cess is an additional levy on cars that
fall in the GST’s top tax bracket of 28%.
The cess earlier ranged from 1-15%,
with cheaper and less polluting cars
such as small hatchbacks with frugal
petrol engines attracting lower levy.
The upper limit rate is applied to cars
such as Toyota Fortuner (an SUV) and
sedans from BMW, Audi and Mercedes.
Cars smaller than 4 metres attract 1%
cess if they have a petrol engine with a
capacity of up to 1,200cc; or 3% if they
run on a diesel engine smaller than
1,500cc. These also include some nonhatchback
models, such as the DZire
and the Volkswagen Ameo, which are
technically classified as sedans. The
cess on these vehicles will remain
unchanged.
Mumbai-Goa
services back
on schedule
Panaji: Rail and road transport from
Mumbai to Goa and vice-versa is
gradually returning to normalcy with
the heavy downpour subsiding in the
commercial capital on Wednesday.
Traffic movement in the city of
dreams was paralyzed since Tuesday
due to water-logging and high tide.
"A number of trains that were
heading to Mumbai from the Konkan
belt were affected as a result of the
torrential rains. The Goa to Mumbai
train, called Mandovi, was also among
those affected after it departed from
the state, and had to make a halt at
Panvel station instead of its designated
Chhatrapati Shivaji terminus.
informed.
Meanwhile, the Goa to Mumbai bus
of the state-run Kadamba transport
corporation limited (KTCL) also
departed from the Margao bus stand on
schedule. The bus travels from Margao
bus stand and halts at the Panaji and
Mapusa bus stands before taking the
onward journey to Mumbai.
"The bus is expected to reach
Mumbai on schedule on Thursday
morning. Our operations will
continue uninterrupted," a KTCL staff
member said. Private bus operators
also remained optimistic about the
scheduled timings.

RS 184: THIS IS THE 'MAKE
IN INDIA' EDGE WE HAVE
OVER CHINESE FACTORIES
'Made in India' can overtake 'Made
in China' in near future for one big
reason: China has to pay far more to
its workers which raises output costs
and makes goods expensive. According
to market research firm Euromonitor,
average hourly wages is China were
$3.60 last year, 64 per cent more than in
2011. In India, the hourly wages are five
times less than in China. The hourly
wage difference is nearly Rs 184.
Rapid expansion of Chinese economy
over the past decade has driven wages
up. Automation is one solution for
Chinese companies to control costs but
that can lead to more unemployment.
Chinese manufacturers might have to
shift to smaller countries where wages
are low to remain competitive. The
huge emphasis on manufacturing is
not feasible in the long run so China
plans to develop its services sector
more.
Global Times, a Chinese
establishment newspaper, wrote a few
months ago in an article headlined
'China should pay more attention to
India’s increasing manufacturing
competitiveness': “Although India is
still in its initial stage of developing
export-oriented manufacturing
industries, the country has great
potential to emerge as a regional
hub for labour-intensive industries.
One recent analysis showed China’s
manufacturing hourly wage in 2016
was roughly five times that in India.”
The trigger for the article was India’s
exports to China increasing 42% in
January.
India's low-wage edge over China
can certainly help Prime Minister
Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' policy.
But a new policy can blunt this edge.
The central government is bringing
a law that can result in doubling of
minimum wage nationally. This will
apply to the short-term contract labour
too, which faces the most exploitative
wage conditions. But it can actually
turn out to be bad news for them and
the small-scale sector. The doubling
of minimum wages will hit the sector
which employs most of the low-paid
workers. A lot of small-scale firms may
not be able to adhere to the new wage
law as they are already struggling due
to many factors.
A law that doubles the minimum
wage might purport to favour workers
but it can devastate job market itself
in the short term and take away a longterm
edge from Indian manufacturing.
Saab, Adani to partner
to build single-engine
fighter jets in India:
consultant
New Delhi: Sweden’s Saab will tie up
with Adani Group to bid for a contract
to make fighter aircrafts in India, an
aerospace consultant aware of the
proposed partnership told Reuters on
Thursday.
The partnership will compete with US
defence giant Lockheed Martin in a two
horse-race to equip the Indian military
with single-engine jets to be produced
locally under Prime Minister Narendra
Modi’s “Make-in-India” initiative.
The Saab-Adani partnership is aimed
at producing planes under India’s new
“strategic partnership” policy, said
Ratan Shrivastava, the independent
New-Delhi-based consultant and
adviser at India’s industry lobby group
FICCI said.
The partnership will likely be
announced on Friday, Shrivastava
said.
Under the country’s new defence
partnership policy, a foreign aircraft
maker will collaborate with an
Indian firm to develop a world-class
indigenous aeronautical base that
India has struggled to build for
decades.
The government will issue a formal
request to Lockheed and Saab over the
next few days to provide information
about their plans to design, develop
and produce combat jets in India,
a government official told Reuters
earlier this week.
India’s air force needs hundreds
of aircraft to replace its Soviet-era
fleet, but Modi wants the planes built
in India to help boost the domestic
industrial base and cut imports.
Reuters
Xiaomi has sold over
25 million phones in
India in three years,
it claims
Xiaomi VP and India MD Manu Kumar
Jain on Thursday announced that
the company has sold over 25 million
phones in India in three years. "That's
22,000 phones sold per day over last 3
years. Fastest brand in India to cross
the 25 million mark," Manu wrote on
Twitter. Xiaomi's first product in India,
the Mi 3 phone, was launched in India
in July 2014. Since then, the company
has launched a plethora of phones -
largely in the budget and the mid-level
price segment - in the Indian market.

India one
of US most
significant
tourism origin
countries
Washington, Aug 23 (PTI) India is
probably one of the most significant
tourism origin countries for the US
with enormous growth potential, a top
official has said.
Indian visitors spent a record
USD 13.6 billion in the US last year,
positioning India on the sixth spot
among the top 10 international
markets for the US in terms of visitor
spending.
As many as 1.17 million Indians
visited the US in 2016, ranking
India 11th in terms of number of
international visitors to the US last
year, the US Department of Commerce
said in its latest annual report released
recently.
"Indias probably one of our most
significant origin countries, as it
relates to the whole phenomena
of visiting friends and relatives,"
Brand USA president and CEO Chris
Thompson told PTI, ahead of his
upcoming sixth annual India Travel
Trade Mission next month.
There is enormous growth potential
as the US currently captures only
about 5.5 per cent of the outbound
Indian travel market, he said.
"We have a large Indian population
within the United States. We have
a great relationship with India as
it relates to people coming over for
Indians can now head to
Israel to explore something
called defence tourism
The Israeli Ministry of Tourism recently held roadshows in India.
The Israeli Ministry of Tourism
(IMOT) is exploring the niche segment
of "anti-terrorism" or "defence"
tourism with Indian travel agents, an
Israeli official said here on Thursday.
"It's a niche concept. There are many
tourists from the US and Europe who
are interested to learn how people
defend themselves and things about
warfare... because the reputation of
Israeli security is very high," Hasan
Madah, Director, India in the Israeli
Tourism Ministry told IANS here.
Madah said after some tourists
evinced an interest in training
in defensive tactics, a clutch of
entrepreneurs decided to push this as
a segment.
"They want to know how to shoot,
how to hide, how to tackle. It's similar
to paintball (an adventure sport). Some
entrepreneurs in Israel, they decided
to go ahead and open a business like
this," he said.
"You can go there and do whatever
you like. Some people like to
relax and some people like
these things, so why not? We
are exploring all (tourism)
angles with travel agents
in India. We are interested
in promoting anything that
brings in more tourists."
The Ministry officials
were in the city for a six-city
roadshow.
The Israeli delegation was led by
Madah, along with Judah Samuel,
Director - Marketing, Israel Ministry
of Tourism, India, and included
representative partners from the
tourism industry of Israel.
The roadshow witnessed the
participation of over 100 travel agents
in each city.
Madah said Prime Minister
Narendra Modi's historic visit to
Israel early last month has sparked a
renewed interest among Indians and
the country wants to leverage this to
increase destination awareness.
"We have seen many inquiries
coming in. The indication from the
market is that it (visit of Modi) has
really helped. We expect the growth to
be significant in the next few months."
Over 34,000 Indian tourists have
travelled to Israel till July in 2017,
marking a growth of 36 per cent over
the previous year.
educational opportunities and then
therefore families come over following
those students.
"The relationship between the two
largest democracies in the world is
really good one in general but certainly
as it relates to travel and tourism
between our two countries," Thompson
said.
India had the highest increase in
visitor spending, up by 14 per cent.
As many as 1.17 million Indians
visited the US in 2016, ranking
India 11th in terms of number of
international visitors to the US in 2016,
he added, referring to the latest official
figures released recently.
Headed for India from September
10-15 on his sixth annual trade mission
that would take him to Mumbai, New
Delhi and Chennai, he said the main
focus is to encourage Indian visitation
to the US and educate the Indian travel
industry on the limitless potential of
the US as a travel destination.
Last years travel trade mission
attracted the largest United States
delegation ever to engage with the
India travel trade, he said.
Responding to a question, Thompson
said there is enormous growth
potential from Indian tourists coming
to the US because the US currently
captures only about 5.5 per cent of the
outbound Indian travel market.
New York, California and Hawaii are
one of the top three destinations for
Indian tourists. Florida, Washington
and Texas are the next three, followed
by New Jersey, Alaska, Virginia and
Michigan, he said.
The average length of stay in the
US for Indian tourists in 2016 is 36.9
nights, compared to 35.3 nights in 2015,
Thompson said.
Thompson said he has not seen
any impact on flow of tourists and
visitors from India after the Trump
administration took over in January.
"Last year, we attracted the largest
US delegation ever to engage with
the travel trade in India. We are
anticipating that we will have probably
a record attendance this year also," he
added. PTI LKJ CPS

Well, for a select group of people.
The Diesel On Full Guard, which
is the new name for at least the
first smartwatch, is now on sale at
Macy's department stores for $325.
The model is outfitted with a black
rest of the four Diesel On Android
on 25 September, though much of the
difference will be cosmetic only.
Two of them will have black leather
bands, one will have a black metal
band and another will have a gold
metal band. They all run a Qualcomm
2100 Snapdragon processor, have a
48mm case, IP67 water resistance, and
a 'high resolution' AMOLED display.
The more interesting things about the
Apple may
launch iPhone 8
on September 12,
says report
Apple is expected to launch its next
flagship device iPhone 8 on September
12, a media report said. According to
the Wall Street Journal, the company
is expected to release three new devices
— iPhone 8 along with the updated
versions of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
— that will be called iPhone 7S and
iPhone 7S Plus.
Following several leaks about Apple’s
controversial yet virtually bezel-less
redesign, a detailed iPhone 8 dummy
model confirmed that the devices
would have an elongated 18.5:9 aspect
ratio like the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8
Plus, Forbes reported.
It would also reduce bezel sizes to
just 4 mm on all sides and feature a
vertically aligned rear camera, the
report added. The rear dual-camera
system on the iPhone 8 would protrude
more than ever before.
Earlier leaks have suggested design
changes in detail. They also pointed
out that the 2017 device would have an
all-display front with the fingerprint
scanner moved to the back.
The handful of images also showed
the upcoming iPhone 8 with rearplaced
Touch ID placed directly below
the Apple logo.

Albert Einstein's letter to a
friend may fetch over $60,000
at US auction
... Continued from Pg. 1
Datelined from Princeton, April
15, 1950, the letter by Einstein melds
the philosophical with the scientific
and gives insight into the disciplined
scientific mind of the great physicist.
In the letter, Einstein writes about
wide-ranging content spanning from
the spiritual - referencing God as "Him"
- to his Unified Field Theory, with
equations from the theory in his hand,
that he believed neutralises his critics,
according to Nate D Sanders auction
house.
"There is one thing that I have
learned in the course of a long life: It is
devilishly difficult to get closer to 'Him',
if one does not want to remain on the
surface," Einstein wrote.
"There is no such thing as a 'particle'
in the strictest meaning of the word,"
Einstein writes taking aim at quantum
physicists. He even tackles the tricky
Air Costa yet to refund customers since
suspending flight operations in February
Vijayawada-based low-cost airline Air
Costa has not refunded its flyers after
temporarily suspending operations
in a surprise move in February. The
airline had taken the decision on facing
financial issues with its lessors.
The company was operating in eight
cities since October 2013.
It is the second airline in India to
ground its operation this year after
Bengaluru-based Air Pegasus.
Air Costa's website and customer
care helpline have also stopped
working after their discontinuation of
services. This had forced customers to
issue of knowledge itself writing "no
guarantee that it will ever be possible
to know whether the theory is 'true'".
The two paged letter is signed as
"Affectionate greetings. Your A.E."
The letter measures 8.5 x 11 inches
and is accompanied by the original
envelope postmarked from Princeton
on 16 April 1950.
The online auction bidding will end
on September 28.
post complaints on online consumer
forums.
According to the president of
Air Passengers Association of
India, customers who are facing
inconveniences from such airlines
should come together and approach
the court for failing to repay the flyers'
money.
"We have limited powers to take
action since the airline is not
operational however we have already
suspended its flying licence," a DGCA
official said.
Scientists
launch
virtual reality
game to detect
Alzheimer’s
LONDON: Sea Quest Hero is more
than just the usual computer game in
which players find their way through
mazes, shoot and chase creatures – it
also doubles as scientists’ latest tool
for studying Alzheimer’s disease.
The game – downloadable from Aug
29 in its virtual reality version – seeks
to stimulate players’ brains through a
series of tasks based on memory and
orientation skills, while gathering data
to research dementia.
One of the first symptoms of
Alzheimer’s is loss of navigational
skills. But data comparing cognitive
response across a broad spectrum of
ages is rare, and this is what the game
seeks to provide.
The game – billed as the “largest
dementia study in history” – has been
developed by Deutsche Telekom,
Alzheimer’s Research UK and
scientists from University College
London and the University of East
Anglia.
The mobile version, which came out
in 2016, has already been downloaded
three million times in 193 countries.
Playing the game for just two
minutes, the website said, generates
the same amount of data scientists
would take five hours to collect in
similar lab-based research.
With the equivalent of 63 years
already played, scientists now have
some 9,500 years worth of dementia
research to go through.
”That gave us an enormous amount
of information and it really allowed us
to understand how men and women of
different ages navigate in the game,”
David Reynolds, chief scientific officer
at Alzheimer’s Research UK, told AFP.
Resolving the tasks requires the use
of “different parts of your brain and
different parts of your brain are used
in different ways by different types of
dementia – so it allows us to link what
someone can do to what is going on in
their brain,” Reynolds added.
50 million sufferers
The addition of virtual reality will
provide yet another layer of data.
”The headset technology is helping to
track where the person is looking at all
times as well as where they’re going,”
Lauren Presser, one of the game’s
producers, told AFP.
”So we get to know whether people
are lost and how they behave in those
situations... Every single one of those
experiments is helping us gather data
around spatial navigation.”
Nearly 50 million people around
the world suffer from dementia and
Alzheimer’s according to the latest
estimates. This figure could balloon to
132 million by 2050. There is no cure
for the disease, but the game’s creators
hope it could eventually enable
diagnosis and treatments of patients
far earlier than is currently possible.

A Technician Dies Tragically On The Sets Of
Anushka Sharma’s Pari
A lighting department technician
passed away on the set of Anushka
Sharma’s upcoming release Pari
on Tuesday. Reportedly, the man
about the same. The man who was
a technician apparently came in
Alam was taken to a nearby hospital
where he was declared brought dead.
The shooting of the film has been
stopped, according to the police.
New Delhi: Bollywood veteran Dilip
Kumar on Wednesday breathed a
major sigh of relief as the Supreme
Court ruling regarding an old realty
case came in his favour. It is being said
that the 94-year-old actor now has to
pay Rs 20 crore to Prajita Developers
Pvt Ltd so that the possession of his
2,412 square yards property in Bandra
can be restored.
According to TOI.com, the 'Mughale-Azam'
star back in 2006 joined forces
with a real estate firm to develop
the property. Sadly, the work never
started.
Reportedly, the company has been
directed to withdraw all its security
personnel from the property. The
land needs to be given back to Kumar
within the seven days after Kumar
deposits the money in the court.
“I Knew That The Subject Of
Universal Appeal”: R.S. Prasanna
R.S. Prasanna, who is making his
Bollywood debut with the film Shubh
Mangal Saavdhan, which deals
with erectile dysfunction, says the
Hindi film industry is encouraging
filmmakers to explore unusual subjects
and thanks to the new age audience,
such films are making a difference.
Considering the fact that the film
is the remake of its Tamil version
Kalyana Samayal Saadham, which
was also directed by him, asked if it
was a safe choice to make a debut with,
Prasanna told IANS, “Well, I think
Bollywood has always encouraged
experimental subjects. Therefore, films
like Vicky Donor, Dum Laga Ke Haisha
and Hindi Medium have been made
and accepted in mainstream cinema of
Bollywood.
Actress Sonam Kapoor, who
says she has had a creatively
satisfying year so far, will start
shooting for Veere Di Wedding
in the capital city.
“Going to be leaving for Delhi
today. So excited to start ‘Veere
Shikha Talsania, Kareena
Kapoor Khan, Rhea Kapoor,
Shashank Ghosh,” Sonam
tweeted on Thursday morning.
“This year has been amazing
for me creatively. Working on
you guys to see all these films!
Lots of love to all who have
supported me and have helped
me through my journey,” she
added.
“Even when I was making the film
in Tamil, I knew that the subject of
erectile dysfunction has a universal
appeal. So when in a conservative
environment of Tamil cinema, the
multiplex audience received the film
CROSSWORD CRACKER
FOUR CENTURIES AFTER
ARRIVING IN GOA, QUEEN
KETEVAN’S RELICS TO
TRAVEL TO HOME COUNTRY
Ruins of the Convent of the Augustinian Friars at Old Goa
Panaji: Nearly four centuries after
two Augustinian Frias brought them
to Old Goa, the Sacred Relics of 17th
century queen (saint) Ketevan will
travel to Georgia for a six-monthlong
exhibition, in what is a historic
occasion for the country. An agreement
to this effect was signed between
the two countries on Wednesday.
The remains were discovered by
archaeological survey of India (ASI)
within the ruins of the St Augustinian
convent in Old Goa in 2004, following
excavations lasting more than a
decade.
The ambassador of Georgia and
ASI officials are expected to leave for
Georgia with the relics on September
20. These will be kept on public display
for history lovers and faithful at
important places, including religious
landmarks in that country, before they
are brought back to Goa. "The relics are
one of its kind from Georgia discovered
in the country," an official said. A
Jokes apart!
Dating a Hairy
Woman?
Two Italian friends are talking to each
other one evening.
Roberto says, “Tell me Geno, in all
honesty, what do you think of a woman
with a growth of black hair under her
nose?”
Geno replies, “Hell no, I would never
be turned on by a woman like that.”
Roberto says, “OK, so tell me, what
about a woman with big black hairs
growing under her arms?”
Geno says, “For Pete’s sake what are
you talking about? I couldn’t even
have anything to do with a woman like
that.”
Roberto says, “OK but let me ask you
another question. What about a woman
with long black hairs growing on her
legs, never shaves her legs?”
Geno replies, “Come on man give me a
break, I would never get into bed with
a woman like that.”
Roberto says, “OK so answer me one
last question, if all you say is true, why
the hell are you seeing my wife?!!!”
Drum Problem
There was once a small boy who
banged a drum all day and loved every
moment of it. He would not be quiet,
no matter what anyone else said or
did. Various attempts were made to do
something about the child.
One person told the boy that he
number of pilgrimages are being
planned to coincide with the arrival of
the relics of the Queen, who is highly
revered in the country for the torture
she suffered in Iran after being taken
prisoner by the emperor of Persia,
Shah Abbas I.
The Georgians have been waiting
for this occasion for decades together.
Since 1988-89, delegations from that
country have been working with
the ASI trying to locate Ketevan's
relics within the St Augustinian
convent. Despite the exact location
of the Queen's relics being specified
in a Portuguese document, efforts to
locate these were unsuccessful due to
"difficulties in interpretation of the
convent" until they stumbled upon
the tombstone of Manuel de Sequeira
e Matos, which gave them the clue.
The team found other tombstones and
finally stumbled upon the relics only
in 2005.
A long drawn exercise, the DNA
sequencing proved the relics to be that
of Ketevan and the study was published
in the journal Mitochondrion in 2013.
According to historical records two
Augustinian Frias unearthed the
remains of the Queen and hid them
from 1624 till 1627, when they were
brought to Goa. The relics and the
coping stone of the sarcophagus lie in
the ASI museum, Old Goa.
Source: timesofindia.indiatimes.com
would, if he continued
to make so much noise,
perforate his eardrums.
This reasoning was
too advanced for the child, who was
neither a scientist nor a scholar.
A second person told him that drum
beating was a sacred activity and
should be carried out only on special
occasions. The third person offered
the neighbors plugs for their ears; a
fourth gave the boy a book; a fifth gave
the neighbors books that described a
method of controlling anger through
biofeedback; a sixth person gave the
boy meditation exercises to make
him placid and docile. None of these
attempts worked.
Eventually, a wise person came along
with an effective motivation. He looked
at the situation, handed the child a
hammer and chisel, and asked, “I
wonder what’s inside the drum?”

How Do
I Fully
Unplug
on a
Vacation?
Gone are the days of traveling to get
away, disconnect, and reboot… It’s a
sad truth, but on vacations in the last
couple years, there are so many more
people on their laptops and phones
than ever before. Admittedly, most
people have a hard time disconnecting
from the everyday stress life brings.
While it can be tempting to be posting
on Instagram and going through
your inbox while you’re out of office,
the whole point of a vacation is to
really unwind. And that means from
technology too. Challenge yourself
to put your phone away and feel
the difference how relaxed and
rejuvenated you feel. Here are a few
tips if you actually want to unplug on
your next trip. After all, it’s called paid
time off for a reason, right?
Delete your work email
from your phone
If you want to take a break from work
while traveling, simply delete your
work email from your Phone. It will
make all the difference if you are
trying to unplug because you won’t
even be tempted to get online and
respond. Plus, do you get anxiety over
seeing the little red notification bubble
show a number in the hundreds? We
bet you do. When you’re home from
your trip and ready to tackle that
inbox, you can easily add your work
email right back to your phone.
Go somewhere off the grid
We all go on trips where we know
we will need to be connected or
working remotely while there. And,
if this is the case, it’s smart to pick
a destination and accommodations
that have Wi-Fi and good cell service.
However, if you’re traveling in order
to relax, there’s something to be said
about planning your trip around
CLASSIFIEDS
disconnecting. That could mean going
off the map, or staying at a hotel or
Airbnb that’s in a more remote area.
There are so many beautiful places
to explore that are more off the grid,
which will make it easier for you to
unplug altogether. If your goal is to
relax, keep your location in mind and
don’t be afraid to go off the map.
Leave your laptop behind
It sounds scary, we know. But if you’ve
been planning a vacation for months
and getting ahead with your work, why
even bother taking your laptop with
you on your travels? It will only sit
there tempting you to get online, and
I can assure you that you will regret it
the moment when sifting through your
inbox takes up an entire afternoon of
beach time (also known as piña colada
time ). A better idea is to do your
work ahead of time, set your out of
office (directing any emails to a trusted
co-worker or someone within your
department) and truly unplug.
Bring a paperback book
instead of your Smart
Phone
Call us old fashioned, but lately a good
old paperback book is all you need
on your travels if you really want to
disconnect. Leave your phone at home
and pack an actual book (or two).
You’ll be less likely to check social
media or your email if you’re reading
your of-the-moment novel the old
fashioned way instead of on a phone.
What tips do you have for
unplugging on vacay?
LADAKH, India — On portable foam
mats on a northern Indian plateau in
view of the Himalayas, rows of girls
and young women kick their legs in the
air simultaneously. One. Two. Three.
Nuns walk throughout the rows,
eyeing the girls’ form and offering
constructive criticism on their newly
learned skills.
The girls are taking part in a selfdefense
workshop, the first such
training put on by the Drukpa Kung Fu
Nuns. Since mastering the martial art,
the nuns are now teaching a generation
of girls and young women how to
defend themselves.
“Self-defense is very important
because of rape cases and other bad
news,” 26-year-old nun Jigme Migyur
Palmo told NBC News. “They have to
have confidence.”
According to India’s National
Crime Record Bureau, there were
approximately 34,000 rapes reported
in the country in 2015 — the latest
year data is available — up from
approximately 25,000 in 2012.
The five-day workshop for beginners
was held in India’s Ladakh region in
early August and was sponsored by the
U.S.-based Live to Love International,
a nonprofit that focuses on serving the
people of the Himalayas.
Live to Love was founded by the
Gyalwang Drukpa — the head of a
branch of Tibetan Buddhism — and
in 2009, he introduced kung fu to the
branch’s nuns as a way to improve
health and self-defense.
Before the nuns were shy, said
Palmo, but now they have more
confidence.
“I, myself, can say I have lots more
confidence than before,” she said.
Palmo, who used to watch Jackie
Chan movies as a young girl, became
a nun when her father told her about
the Gyalwang Drukpa and the focus on
women's empowerment.
“If I became a nun it would benefit
other girls,” she said, later adding:
“Before I was thinking kung fu was
just for fun.”
The kung fu workshop, which
catered to nearly 100 girls ages 13 to 28,
included those from nearby villages
and even some Muslim girls and young
women, said Carrie Lee, a former
president of Live to Love, which has 13
chapters around the world.
“It’s our first time,” she said. “We
had no idea what the reception would
be.”
Posters and signs were displayed
throughout Ladakh, inviting girls and
young women to take part.
The training broke barriers both
for the participants and the nuns,
according to Lee.
“Nuns have traditionally been
second-class citizens in the
Himalayas,” she said, adding that there
are some people who believe nuns
shouldn’t be teaching kung fu.
But the nuns have thrived with their
newfound skills, she said.
“It’s the first time they heard having
confidence can save your life,” Lee
said. “Even getting used to screaming
is empowering.”
