Mind precedes all
mental states.

There are undoubtedly many
external factors in life that
can cause us to suffer, it is
also true that the real source
of suffering is much closer to
home - in the mind itself.

Many people
“dare to take risks,”
but only the most
successful people
“dare to fail.”

whatever we strive to
achieve in life, there
is always a risk that we
might fail. Indeed, the
greater the challenges
and obstacles we face,
the greater is our
risk of failure.

We usually take a
particular route because
we believe that it is
the best one.

Therefore we deal with
the same problems, at
the same points on the
same journey, every
single day.

Our brains are hardwired to be
more sensitive to bad news than
good news.

On any given
day, we may
encounter a
multitude of
good things, but
if we encounter
just one bad
thing, it can
easily steal all
the joy from all
the good.

Memory–Thought-Emotion
Whenever a snapshot of
your experience is
stored in memory,
so too are the thoughts
and emotions that you
felt in that moment.

A particular song might have
a positive effect on you
because you were happy when
you first heard it.
The smell of a certain flower
might take you back to a time
when you felt relaxed.
The taste of a certain food
might remind you of a party
you enjoyed.
The touch of a particular
object can bring back a dozen
different emotions.
Managing what you see, hear,
smell, taste, and touch can
help you to generate the
kinds of thoughts and
emotions that you really
want to think and feel
whenever you like.

To think only positive thoughts
is bad for us, and yet to think
only negative thoughts is even
worse.

Excessive positive
thinking can lead us to
“positive
a
illusion
“Negative thinking”
can be stressful, but if that
stress can be used to increase
our determination and our
commitment to self-improvement,
or to safeguard us from
failure, then we cannot say
that negative thinking is
always a bad thing.

The primary
function of
emotion is
to help us
survive.

Joy gives color to life and
makes us want to keep on living.
Fear causes us to avoid danger.
Anger pushes us to go on the
offensive to protect ourselves and
our interests.
Disgust keeps us protected
from potential sources of harm and
illness
Sadness is what makes us
preserve the things we love.

Stress can be a negative
force when it discourages us,
but can also be a positive
force when it helps us to
stay focused.

A moderate level of
fear is beneficial
for us, as it keeps
us on our toes and
forces us to be on
alert. On the other
hand, too much fear
can easily drain us
of our motivation.

“Anger” shares the same
basis as “Fear”.

Fear protects us from
danger by triggering our
fight-or-flight response.
If the brain perceives a
threat, then the emotion
of anger gives us the
option to
fight.

To have confidence is to
recognize one's
abilities and accept
their limitations.

“Curiosity” is also a key component of
enthusiasm, and one that is often most
prominent during
childhood.

To have hope is to look into
the future and see better things.

You can learn
more about
yourself by
trying to see
yourself from
the perspective
of others.

We cannot dictate whether good things
or bad things happen in our lives,
but if we want to live more happily,
then the one thing that we can start
doing immediately is to..............
pay attention selectively.

Life is a mixed bag,
and if we focus only on the
bad parts, then it should
come as no surprise to us
that we feel miserable.
If we focus on the good
parts, however, we can
expect to feel good too.
