‘Well, thanks for another great bingo night,’ I said as I hugged Eva
goodbye. ‘I hope Sarah’s going to be alright. Say goodbye to her for me,
will you?’
Some time between 11.30 pm and 11.45 pm, Andrew and I pulled out
of the driveway and settled into our customary silence for the drive home.
Normally I might have stayed the night, as I often did on my
weekend retreats to Eva’s house. On this night, however, Andrew had
come to pick me up, and in any case, all of the extra space was destined for
the imminent occupation of teenage bodies. I would have preferred to
spend a little more time in Eva’s company, but the domestic situation made
that impossible.
I’ve often thought how very different things might have been if we
had stayed a little longer. I try not to think about it too much, but
occasionally it plagues me. You can’t change what’s happened, but if we’d
been able to spend another hour or so chatting we wouldn’t have had our
encounter. Andrew and I would probably still be together, and I would
probably still be an innocent Christian.
Life might have taken a completely different turn if it hadn’t been for
a simple little thing like the break-up of a teenage romance.
