AMENITY ACCESS - Stone Gate, Canyon Lakes, Canyon Lakes Village, Canyon Lakes West and Miramesa are in the same homeowner’s association, 

S-G Owners Association. All residents are welcome to use the amenities at all locations. To sign up for Stone Gate amenities, residents of Canyon 

Lakes West and/or Miramesa must go to the Recreation Center at Stone Gate and show them a copy of their driver’s license to show proof of 

residency and then they can register there. The two recreation centers are on different computer systems and in order to use the Stone Gate 

amenities, residents must sign up on their system and vice versa. Canyon Lakes West and Miramesa are on the same computer system, so you only 

have to sign up at one or the other, not both.

then you don’t need to go far! Our community wide garage sale takes 

place in your own garage! We’ll be creating a map of all the garage sales 

in the community. To be added to the map, please email your address

Be Courteous And Respectful 

Please be considerate of the differences in lifestyles between neighbors, 

such as family situations (small children, teenagers, retired, elderly, 

professionals and students), different work and sleep schedules and 

whether they are comfortable with pets or not. 

Noise 

Be courteous - keep the noise to an acceptable level. Complaints about 

excessive noise can come from loud music, outdoor activities, early 

morning lawn mowers and guests coming or going during late night or 

early morning hours. 

Golf Carts 

Please do not allow teenagers and/or young children to drive golf 

carts in our community. 

Cart Path Safety 

Please be aware of the safety hazards involved in trespassing onto 

the Sterling Country Club and Houston National cart paths and golf 

course. The cart paths on both courses are only for golfers that have 

registered through our Pro Shop. Cart paths are a means for players 

to complete their round of golf as quickly, conveniently and safely as 

possible. As the Stone Gate community continues to grow we feel 

it is our responsibility to educate every resident as best we can to 

keep pedestrians and their pets safe and away from the cart paths. 

Golf balls are often hit at speeds over 150 mph and can have deadly 

consequences to a human or pet if hit in the head, throat or chest. 

Because the paths are for registered golfers, those playing golf are not 

aware of the presence of pedestrians on the course, which can lead to 

very damaging collisions with hikers/bikers and their pets. This January 

I fielded a report of a pedestrian being struck by a golf ball and other 

reports of residents having near miss encounters with golf carts when 

traveling along the paths. Hiking, jogging, biking, dog walking, golf 

cart/ATV’s not being used to play golf, skateboarding and skating on 

the cart paths is strictly prohibited on the basis of safety hazard and 

trespassing concerns. Thanks for your cooperation! 


Rules of the Road for 

S-G Owner's Association 

This is a reminder…. The operation of motorized vehicles (ATV’s, dirt 

bikes, golf carts, etc.) other than mowing equipment on pathways or 

trails maintained by the Association or any other Common Area within 

the community is not allowed. Please do not allow teenagers and/or 

young children to drive golf carts in our community. 

According to the Texas department of public safety: 

• ATV’s are not allowed on a street and an operator crossing a street must 

have a valid driver’s license. 

• Golf carts are allowed on roads, but must obey all traffic laws including 

speed limits. If operated on a road the golf cart must have a license plate 

and the driver must have a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance. 

• Mopeds and motor assisted scooters are treated as regular bicycles. All 

vehicles used on roads must obey traffic laws including stop signs and 

speed limits. For additional information on this subject go to www.txdps.

DID YOU KNOW…. ATV’s and Golf Carts on common areas of the 

community require your money to repair these areas when damaged. 

Please Be Observant of Posted 

Traffic Signs, Speed and Gates 

Please respect the posted traffic speeds and stop signs in our 

community. They are here to make our community a safe and 

pleasant place to live. Use extra caution when driving near our parks 

and community pools Please also use the correct side of the gates for 

entry and exit. 

Street Parking 

We have received numerous complaints from residents about 

people parking in the streets. Please be advised that the S-G Owners 

Association will begin placing orange violation stickers on vehicles 

that are in violation of the parking policy. Per the Parking Policy, 

vehicles may only be parked on the street during daylight hours, when 

the driveway can hold no additional vehicles. This does include your 

guests/nanny, babysitter, home healthcare provider, etc. Commercially 

marked larger vehicles like; Comcast, AT&T, Entouch, landscaper, etc., 

may park in front of the home they are providing a service call for, if this 

is the homeowner’s vehicle, it may not be stored in the community. In 

addition, no overnight parking is permitted. Towing will be enforced in 

the gated sections. We encourage you to ensure that your vehicles are 

properly parked and/or make proper parking arrangements. We thank 

you for your cooperation and understanding. The Owners Association 

understands there may be extenuating circumstances which arise 

from time to time, please contact Tamara Paul, your On-Site Manager;

household.

Let Us Keep Our 

Neighborhoods Litter Free! 

Take responsibility for yourself & be a good neighbor! Keep our streets & 

neighborhood trash & litter free! Make it a habit, be a good neighbor & do 

your part! If each person did their own part (around the outside of their 

home, including their little stretch of street in front of their house), what 

a better place this would be to live! A clean environment/neighborhood 

makes people feel good about themselves. They will keep it clean. Some 

need to be reminded. Others need to be continually reminded. It takes 

time to change habits. Keeping your neighborhood clean is a habit that 

takes conscious effort.

Keep Our Lakes Clean 

Please help us keep our community beautiful by NOT THROWING trash 

and debris into the lakes. In addition, there is NO SWIMMING, BOATING 

OR FISHING in the LAKES. 

Tennis Courts 

The Association kindly asks that residents refrain from using the tennis 

courts for anything other than playing tennis. Playing basketball, football 

and/or other activities can cause damage to the tennis courts making it 

unavailable for other residents to use and creating costly repairs. 

Pets 

Stone Gate Community has had many loose dogs & cats lately. Please 

do your part to keep your animals safe and contained on your property. 

Please Control Your Pets! 

It is a deed restriction violation if your pets are not confined to a fenced 

backyard or within your home. They must not be allowed to bark all 

night or cause a nuisance to your neighbors. They must also be on a 

leash at all times when not in a contained environment. It is also the pet 

owner’s responsibility to keep ALL areas of the community FREE from pet 

debris when walking your pets. Please remember that cats must also be 

confined. Animal Control can be reached at 281-999-3191. 

If you happen to come across vicious dogs or ANY loose dogs of this 

nature, please contact your local Animal Control at 281-999-3191. If 

you are familiar with the property address the pets belong to, please 

feel free to submit that information to PMG - James Skinner - jskinner@ 

pmghouston.com - to pursue the deed restriction violation. Notification 

and ample time must be given to the owner to correct the violation prior 

to any further pursuit by the Association. 

Remember that all pets should always wear a collar with ID tag! Pet 

owners should also consider pet microchips for identification in case 

your pet looses their collar/ID tag.

• Click on “lost & found pets” 

You personally can create a description of the lost or found pet as well 

as add photos. Please include your contact information to speed up 

communications. 

Be A Responsible Pet Owner 

Being a responsible pet owner means ensuring vaccinations are 

maintained, preventing excessive pet-related noise, restraining pets in an 

appropriate manner and removing pet waste. Due to increased reports 

of dog attacks and dog bites in the community, the Association would 

like to remind residents to keep your pets on a lease at all times. ALL pets 

including cats must be leased AT ALL TIMES. There are leash laws in place 

by for the community as well as the county. We ask that you help keep 

the community safe by keeping your pet on the leash while out walking 

in the community and to remember to clean up after them. 

Dog Walking Etiquette 

Good dog-walking etiquette means picking up the poop after your dog is 

finished. This is as simple as taking a plastic grocery bag, turning it inside 

out and placing your hand inside and using the bag as a plastic glove, 

then turn the bag back out and take the bag with you where you can 

dispose of it properly. That’s the courteous thing to do. Don’t get caught 

without extra poop bags, particularly if you’re going on a long walk. (P.S. 

This is a great way to recycle all those plastic grocery bags!)

BEWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS 

Remember, we do live in a big city. We have all the elements here and 

we have people looking to take advantage of people they perceive as 

victims. If a crime is going to occur, the offender must have three things 

to accomplish the task: desire, ability and opportunity. Personally, there 

is not much that you can do about the offender’s desire and ability. 

However, you can take steps to control the offender’s opportunity. 

• BE AWARE of your surroundings! Giving the appearance of not paying 

attention and not being alert is what offenders look for in a victim. Turn 

off your ipod/headphones or cell phone to reduce your risk of being a 

crime victim. 

• You should never walk alone! However, if you must walk alone, have a 

plan and choose open well lighted and well traveled areas. 

• When walking you should walk facing traffic. Do not read while walking 

or standing on the street. Be cautious of drivers that stop to talk to you or 

are not paying attention to the road. 

• Avoid being on the street alone if you are upset or distracted. 

• Always tell someone where you’ll be and what time you are going to 

return. 

• If you think you are being followed: cross the street, change directions, 

keep looking back so the person knows you can’t be surprised. Look for a 

crowded area and move quickly. 

• TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS: If something “feels wrong”, something 

probably is wrong. 

• If you find yourself in a situation with an assailant, don’t be afraid to 

loudly call attention to what the assailant is doing (“Help!” “Fire!” “Get 


your hands off me!” “This stranger is bothering me...”, etc.). 

• Report suspicious persons to the police immediately! 

• Keep emergency numbers near your phone. 

• Do not leave messages on your door or voice mail, etc., indicating you 

are away or when you will return. 

• Be cautious of telephone surveys and NEVER... give out any personal 

information. 

• Do not prop open doors or gates. This will put everyone at risk. 

• Always LOCK your doors, garage and windows. 

• Keep access cards, keys and remotes in a safe place. Do not leave them 

lying out in the open. Never leave them on a table or shelf near your door. 

It takes less than 10 seconds to look into your open door and steal items 

from a table or shelf near the door.

BASKETBALL GOALS IN STREET: While basketball goals are permitted

Assists with safety and awareness within the community, making 

recommendations to the Board for placement of stop signs and speed

Provides recommendations to the Board of Directors for the donation of 

AAS funds to the schools within that community for educational school 

items, such as computers, library books, etc. These funds also may be 

allotted for enhancements within the community such as sidewalks,

Cfisd Earns TEA's Met Standard 

Rating For Fifth Straight Year 

Once again this year, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is the largest district in Texas 

to have all eligible schools receive the Met Standard designation (highest 

possible ratings) in the state accountability system. 

To receive a Met Standard rating, campuses must meet the applicable 

Index target on Index 1 or 2 and Index 3 and 4: 

• Index 1: Student Achievement - Measures how many students passed 

the STAAR at the current passing standard; 

• Index 2: Student Progress - Measures how many students made 

progress from 2015 to 2016; 

• Index 3: Closing Performance Gaps - Measures the progress of 

students in the economically disadvantaged student group along with 

the two lowest-performing student groups from the previous year; and 

• Index 4: Postsecondary Readiness - Measures how many students 

passed the STAAR at the final recommended standard on two or more 

tests (all levels) and graduation rate, graduation diploma plan and a 

postsecondary component (high schools only).

whatever it takes to help student achieve is the attitude you find at all of 

our campuses,” said Dr. Linda Macias, CFISD associate superintendent of 

curriculum & instruction and accountability. “Our campus administrators,

needed. Our schools have once again achieved the ‘Met Standard’ rating

CFISD Campuses Earn 2017 

Distinction Designations 

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) released its annual distinction 

designations for campuses earning the accountability rating of Met 

Standard. Campuses that receive an accountability rating of Met 

Standard are eligible to earn distinction designations, which are awarded 

for achievement and progress in the following areas: 

Academic Achievement in English Language Arts/Reading; 

Academic Achievement in Mathematics; 

Academic Achievement in Science; 

Academic Achievement in Social Studies; 

Top 25%: Student Progress; 

Top 25%: Closing Performance Gaps and 

Postsecondary Readiness. 

Each campus is assigned to a unique comparison group made up of 

Texas schools that are most similar to it. The groups are determined on 

grade levels served, size, percentage of students who are economically 

disadvantaged, mobility rate. It also includes the percentage of English 

language learners, students receiving special education services and 

students enrolled in an Early College High School program. 

A campus earns a distinction designation if it is in the top quartile of its 

comparison group for Top 25% student progress and Top 25% closing 

performance gaps and at least 33 percent (high schools) and 50 percent 

(elementary and middle schools) of the indicators used to award the 

distinction in the other areas. 


Campuses earning one or more of these distinction designations met 

rigorous criteria to earn the highest level of recognition in the state 

accountability system. 

Eight CFISD campuses earned all possible distinction designations for 

their respective campus levels: 

Hancock, Holbrook, Lee, Pope and Sampson elementary schools; 

Arnold Middle School and 

Cypress Park and Langham Creek high schools. 

“Our commissioner of education has previously shared that earning one 

or more Distinction Designations is noteworthy and should be a source 

of pride,” said Dr. Linda Macias, CFISD associate superintendent of 

curriculum & instruction and accountability. “We are certainly proud of 

all of our campuses that earned distinction designations and recognize 

the commitment of our administrators, teachers and our community to 

providing our students with a quality education. Striving for excellence is 

a common thread among our campuses and earning all the Distinction 

Designations available to a campus is a tremendous accomplishment.”

To become a mentor, you must attend a training session, complete a 

global volunteer/mentor application and consent to a criminal history 

record check. 

Training Sessions - Registration is REQUIRED. Register for a training

Spring Soccer Sign Ups 

Cy-fair/Magnolia/Tomball/Spring Klein Registration - Now Open! 

Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer (FFPS) is open for boys and girls 

ages 4 to 18 for the fall Season. Games start on October 7, 2017. FFPS 

is a non-dprofit youth soccer program dedicated to providing a positive 

youth sports experience for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, Texas, 

FFPS has grown to 22 leagues and 16,000 players throughout the Greater 

Houston area. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, including 

one practice per week, a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal 

playing time and play every position, co-ed/balanced teams, positive 

coaching and more. No tryouts are required. 

Online Registration schedule and fees (sign up early and save): 

Through Sept. 4 th : $119 

Sept. 5 th through Sept. 18 th : $124 

Sept. 19 th through Full: $129 

Go to www.FFPS.org to sign up. Registration fee includes a full uniform 

(jersey, shorts and socks), trophy, trained positive coaches, nice fields 

and background checks on all volunteers. Coaches will call players 

to schedule practice by October 3 rd . Practice times and location will 

be determined by the coach and team. The schedule includes eight 

games, played locally on Saturdays, October 7 th to December 2 nd .

Bridgeland Community 

Fun Run for Heroes 

The Bridgeland Community Fun Run for Heroes will be held Saturday, 

October 28 th at Bridgeland’s Festival Park. The race begins at 7 AM and 

includes a 5k route through the scenic Bridgeland community. There 

will also be a 1k children’s walk beginning at 7:30 AM, along with booth 

vendors and entertainment. The children’s walk is open to strollers and 

children are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite super hero. 

Prizes will be awarded for the best children’s costumes. Each participant 

may have sponsors who pledge a contribution for every mile they run on 

behalf of our service men and women. Special prizes will be awarded to 

those who meet predetermined fund levels. There will also be 1 st , 2 nd and 

3 rd place trophies awarded to the top three finishers of the timed race.

Cypress 5K Fun Run and Puppy Parade 

Cypress and Houston area residents can strengthen their families, their 

bodies, their neighborhood school and their dogs at a very fun family 

friendly event this fall. Cypress 5K Fun Run and Puppy Parade benefiting 

the Performing Arts Department at Spillane Middle School will take place 

Saturday, November 18 th at 9 AM at Spillane Middle School, 13403 

Spillane Woods Blvd.

The event is the school’s fourth annual Fun Run and will feature a timed 

run. You don’t have to be a competitive runner to participate since the 

race also features a family run for those pushing strollers or wanting to 

walk and a dog walking segment. The race will begin at Spillane Middle 

School and go through the Coles Crossing neighborhood. Medals will be 

awarded in multiple age brackets and to the first three dogs who cross 

the finish line. 

Early bird registration runs through October 28 th for $30 per individual 

or $100 for a family of four and includes a commemorative T-shirt. From 

Oct. 29 th -Nov. 11 th , registration increases to $35 per individual or $110 for 

a family of four and a T-shirt is not guaranteed. Late registration, which 

continues until race day, is $40 per individual or $160 for a family of four 

and does not include the shirt. Returning this year will be the option to 

“Sleep in for the Arts.” Pay the registration fee. Do not participate on Race

The Shots for Holly crew is gearing up for the 4 th annual Flu Season

and inoculations, as well as our infamous bus for picture-taking, raffle

Each year, approximately 50,000 people die of flu-related complications,

Exciting Fall At The Pearl Fincher 

Museum Of Fine Arts 

Fall Exhibits Open September 30 th 

This fall, the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts is thrilled to present an 

exhibition titled Anat Ronen: Urban Legend. After coming to the U.S. 

from Israel in 2007, Anat Ronen embarked on a new career in art and has 

become one of the most exciting and highly regarded street artists of 

our day-though she has no formal training in art. Typically she works on 

large-scale projects that can reach over 30 feet tall, with more than 500 

pieces in public spaces including highways, bridges, buildings, churches 

and schools.

Also this fall, the museum will present Contemporary Quilt Art from 

the International Quilt Festival Collection. For more than three 

decades, Karey Bresenhan, founder of the Houston International 

Quilt Festival and Nancy O’Bryant Puentes have been purchasing 

studio art quilts for their corporate collection. For the first time ever, 

part of this collection has been assembled into a nationally-touring 

exhibition of 25 quilts and the Pearl is delighted to be one of the 

stops on that tour. 

Fall exhibits will open Saturday, September 30 th . The Pearl Fincher 

Museum of Fine Arts is open from 10 AM-5 PM Tuesday through 

Saturday. Admission is free, but a suggested donation of $5 per adult is 

appreciated.

Announces Requests for Volunteers 

October 14-15, 2017 

The Art Colony Association, Inc. (ACA) is in need of volunteers for Bayou 

City Art Festival Downtown on Saturday and Sunday, October 14-15, 

2017. Volunteers have the option of choosing various roles and shifts for 

either or both days. Shifts for Friday afternoon and evening will also be 

available for artist check-in and festival load-in. 

The festival offers volunteers the opportunity to make new friends and 

meet artists from around the country. After every shift, volunteers will 

be entered in a raffle and have the chance to win prizes, including gift 

cards to local restaurants, movie and museum tickets. All volunteers will 

receive a t-shirt and be able to enjoy the festival at no cost before and 

after their shift. The minimum age to sign up is 13 and group volunteering 

is also available. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can sign up 

here. 

Bayou City Art Festival will be held under the iconic Houston Downtown 

skyline, 10 AM - 6 PM. The festival will spotlight more than 300 artists from 

19 different disciplines and benefit local non-profits. Online tickets are

New Laws In Texas 

Effective In 2017 

The Texas legislature met from January through May and passed several 

new laws as well as changed laws that will go into effect in 2017. They 

range from texting while driving, drones, to swords, to protecting good 

Samaritans. Below are a few laws that are effective immediately or 

going into effective September 1 st . 

Texting While Driving 

Effective September 1 st , there will be a statewide band on texting while 

driving. The bill bans drivers from texting while a vehicle is moving, 

making it a misdemeanor offense punishable by a fine ranging from $25 

to $99, with penalties up to $200 for repeat offenders. The law allows 

drivers to use their phones for GPS and would not allow violators to be 

fined under both state law and local ordinances. 

People Allowed to Carry Swords 

People can carry bowie knives, swords, daggers and spears in public 

under a law that goes into effect September 1 st . Current law allows 

people to carry knives no more than 5.5 inches long. While it will be okay 

to carry the larger weapons in public, it is illegal to take into bars, schools, 

colleges, churches, sporting events and numerous other facilities. 

Amnesty for Sex Assault Witnesses 

Students who witness and report a sexual assault while they are involved 

in illegal activity, such as drinking, would be given amnesty. 

Recording Higher Ed Sex Assaults Electronically 

Effective immediately, this law will allow college employees and 

students to submit electronic and anonymous reports of sexual assaults 

to their institutions. 

Ridesharing Returns 

Last year some ridesharing companies, like Uber and Lyft, were mandated 

to fingerprint drivers before they could pick up customers in their cities. 

Effective immediately, this new law, bans cities from enforcing similar 

measures on these types of ridesharing companies. 

Cheaper to Carry a Gun 

Effective September 1 st the fees for carrying a gun in Texas are now 

cheaper under Senate Bill 16. The law lowers fees for a first-time license 

to carry a handgun from $140 to $40 and the renewal fee is also reduced 

from $70 to $40. 

Be Careful Where You Fly your Drone 

Effective September 1 st the state has banned unmanned aircraft, like 

drones, over correctional and United States Immigration, Customs 

Enforcement detention facilities and large sports venues. Exceptions 

include unmanned aircraft authorized by a law enforcement agency or 

with the permission of the operator of the sports venue. 

David’s Law 

The new state law on cyber bullying makes it a Class A misdemeanor to 

harass or cyberbully someone under age of 18 through text messages, 

social media, websites or other means with the intent to cause them to 

commit suicide or harm to themselves. 

Voter ID changes 

If don’t have a valid photo id, voters will be able to cast their ballots 

if they show some other documentation with their name and home 

address (Bank statement or Utility bill). Voters would also need to sign an 

affidavit saying there is a good reason they don’t have a valid photo ID. 

No More Straight-Ticket Voting 

Straight ticket voting is out! Voters will no longer be allowed to cast their 

ballot for an entire slate of Republican or Democratic candidates. You 

will now have to vote for each candidate individually. 

Lottery Winners 

Effective September 1 st . Individuals who win prizes of at least $1 million 

can choose to remain anonymous and prohibit the release of all personal 

information to the public. 

Civil Protections for Good Samaritans 

Effective September 1 st a new law protects good Samaritans from civil 

lawsuits if they break in a vehicle if they have reason to belief the person 

is in imminent harm, has first notified 911, uses appropriate amount of 

force and remains with the individual in a safe location. This replaces 

current law that leaves good Samaritan open to civil suits. 

No More Suspensions for Young Students 

Effective immediately. Schools can no longer suspend students below 

third grade. Instead public schools need to discipline children in a way 

that enforces positive behavior. 

More Frequent Background Checks for College Referees 

Effective September 1 st sport officials registered with the UIL will have 

to undergo criminal background checks every three years instead of just 

one. 

Help for Relatives Caring for Abused Children 

The state will now pay $350 a month to families caring for abused or 

neglected children they are related to. Currently the state pays families 

$1,000 initially and $500 a year. 

Attacking Police Officers is Now Officially a Hate Crime 

If a person attacks a former or current law enforcement officer they could 

be found guilty of committing a crime. The change puts crimes against 

law enforcement in the same category as crimes based on a person’s 

race, color, disability, religion, national origin, age, gender or sexual 

preference.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER 

Time now to make plans for 

fall landscaping projects. 

WHEN AND HOW TO 

REMOVE TREE STAKES 

While trees generally need stakes to 

keep them upright for the first season 

after planting, they should be removed 

after one to two years so that the tree 

continues to grow and thrive. The ties 

used to fasten the stakes to trees can 

cause indentations in the tree if left 

on. Such indentations can significantly 

weaken a tree and constrict bark 

growth. The tree can also get strangled 

if stakes are left on too long, which can 

upset the flow of water and nutrients in 

the tree. This can also cause weak spots. 

Trees are usually tied to a wooden stake 

attached with string to a metal clamp 

around the tree. 

• Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves 

and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of 

iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. 

• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little 

bone meal around the roots. 

• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall 

growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first 

week of September. 

• Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect 

populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. 

Diseases that have been dormant 

wake up. 

- Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible 

to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with 

a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the 

undersides of the leaves. 

- Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are 

susceptible to scale and mealybug. 

• Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. 

• Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. 

• Fire ants baits should be put out in September- 

October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to 

Spring. 

• St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during 

September. Continue to mow at maximum height. 

You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce 

carbohydrate reserves for the winter. 

• Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is 

grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them 

early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars 

are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can 

slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ 

digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the 

application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and 

you want them to get nice fresh Bt. 

• When the heat and drought end, the weather could 

bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. 

Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 

60’s and days stay in the 80’s. 

• Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You 

want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off 

before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put 

off until winter, when the trees are dormant. 

•Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual 

bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf 

weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August. 

Things You’ll Need 

to remove tree stakes: 

• Measuring tape 

• Gardening shovel 

Walk around the staked tree. Look for indications the tree is over a year old or more, 

such as indentations in the wood from the stakes. Measure the tree’s width and 

height, using a measuring tape. If the tree is over 6 feet tall and or thinner than 1 

inch, it should not need stakes. 

Untie the tree from its clamp and dig out the wooden stake from its place in the 

ground with a shovel. Remove the metal clamp from the tree. The tree can now sway 

in the wind, which will help the trunk become stronger and wider.

BUTTERSCOTCH BREAD PUDDING 

You could make this on National Butterscotch Pudding Day 

September 19 th ! 

INGREDIENTS: 

1 loaf day-old bread, torn into small pieces 

4 cups milk 

2 cups brown sugar 

1/2 cup butter, melted 

3 eggs, beaten 

2 teaspoons vanilla extract 

1 cup butterscotch chips 

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Butter a 9x13 

inch baking dish. In a large bowl, combine bread, milk, sugar, 

butter, eggs, vanilla and butterscotch chip, mixture should be the 

consistency of oatmeal. Pour into prepared pan. 

Bake in preheated oven 1 hour, until nearly set. (It should have a 

“thigh wiggle” or wiggle as much as a well endowed thigh.) Serve

HEALTHY COWBOY CAVIAR 

This healthy cowboy caviar recipe (also known as Texas 

caviar) is made with all-natural ingredients! Serve it as a dip, 

salsa or salad Recipe yields a lot of “caviar,” about 8 cups. 

Ingredients 

2 (14-ounce) cans black-eyed peas, rinsed and drained, 

or 3 cups cooked black-eyed peas 

1 (14-ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained, 

or 1 ½ cups cooked black beans 

1 ½ cups fresh corn kernels (about 2 ears of corn), 

or 1 (14-ounce) can corn, drained 

1 ½ cups chopped tomatoes (I used about 4 Roma 

tomatoes, 

about ¾ pound) 

1 medium green, red, orange and yellow bell pepper 

¾ cup chopped red onion (about ½ small red onion) 

½ cup chopped cilantro, leaves and stems 

1 to 2 jalapeños, ribs removed, seeded and finely 

chopped 

1 avocado (optional) 

Instructions 

In a large serving bowl, combine the drained black-eyed peas, black 

beans, corn, chopped tomatoes, bell pepper, onion, cilantro and jalapeño. 

If you’ll be including avocado, wait to dice it until you’re ready 

to serve the dip, so it doesn’t turn brown in the meantime. 

Italian dressing 

1/3 cup olive oil 

3 tablespoons red wine vinegar or lime juice 

In a cup, whisk together the dressing ingredients until emulsified. 

2 medium cloves garlic, pressed or minced1 

Drizzle the dressing over the serving bowl and toss until well mixed. 

to 1 ½ teaspoons salt, to taste 

Season to taste with additional salt and pepper. For best flavor, 

1 teaspoon dried oregano 

let the mixture marinate for at least 20 minutes before serving. If 

½ teaspoon dried basil 

you’re adding avocado, mix it in just before serving. 

1 teaspoon maple syrup or honey 

1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes
