Petanque pitch provides a
playground for adults
The City of Wanneroo is to build an
$18,000 pentanque pitch at Rotary Park,
Scenic Drive, Wanneroo, after more
than 150 residents signed a petition
expressing interest in the construction.
Residents will use the pitch to play
petanque, a French game similar to
boules and bocce, after the local
community expressed the need for
more playgrounds for adults as well as
children.
The pitch will be installed next to the
Wanneroo Recreation Centre, and
its location was decided due to its
proximity to a picnic area, playground
and the Wanneroo town centre.
Both the design and location of the
pitch is being developed following
consultation with the Wanneroo
branch of University of the Third Age,
an organisation promoting lifelong
learning in a relaxed environment.
Rotary Park in Wanneroo will soon be home to a new petanque pitch.
U3A member Constance O’Brien, who
led the petition for the pitch, said it will
be a wonderful addition to the City.
“We’re very happy the pitch is being
built as it will be a great addition to
the community and help bring
everyone together.
“Petanque really is a sport for everyone,
and those who don’t excel at contact
sports can participate and enjoy this
activity while being given an opportunity
to exercise,” Ms O’Brien said.
Banksia Grove Open Space
Work has begun at the $2.8 million
project at Banksia Grove District
Open Space.
Once completed, the development will
see change rooms constructed and
floodlighting installed at the Grandis
Park ovals.
The change room facilities will include
a room for umpires, toilets and a
multipurpose hall that will feature
kitchen facilities for use before,
during and after games. Expected
completion is set for mid-2018.
Mayor Tracey Roberts officially opened the Gumblossom clubrooms ahead of the first game
of the season between Quinns FC (red) and Gwelup Croatia (yellow).
Gumblossom clubrooms a new
sporting fixture
Since opening earlier this year, the
Gumblossom multi-purpose room has
proven popular with the Quinns Football
Club, with teams using the facility
each week during training and games.
“The new facility has fully met the
club’s expectations, and has been
positively welcomed by members and
visitors alike,” according to Rachel
Bryden, Quinns Rocks resident and
Quinns Football Club secretary.
“It has enabled us to provide members
and visitors with an indoor facility to
use before, during and after games,
and the club has also used the
building for events to raise funds to
support the wider development of
the club.”
The clubrooms have enabled sporting
groups to have extra space in
which to socialise before and after
games, creating a stronger sense of
community in the Quinns Rocks area.
The multipurpose 100m² extension
cost $400,000 and opened in April.
The North Coast Ball Club will also
start to use the Tapping Way clubroom
from October, with the facility open
and available for bookings for daytime
use as well.
Coastal shared pathway
A coastal dual-use pathway between
Burns Beach and Mindarie is a step
closer with a $2 million commitment
from the State Government.
The Cities of Wanneroo and
Joondalup have been advocating for
the project for several years, noting
considerable community support to
have a continuous stretch of pathway
connecting the northern beaches.
The design and development phase
will take place during the 2017/18
financial year, including environmental
approvals and processes.
