Hurricane Harvey made landfall as far awa
it stayed. The 50+ inches of rain to follow
three WELS schools near and dear to u
Friendswood, TX for 7 years. Mrs. Nomme
in North Houston. Our former teacher, Tyl
Southwest Houston.
We have been in contact with each of the
with how this storm has affected our fellow
Friendswood was a Quaker settlement 20 miles south of Houston. There are six
classrooms in the newly expanded school with 5 teachers and 10 other staff members.
Lord of Life has 68 students. They have been in school for a week prior to the
hurricane hitting, so their students already had their school supplies purchased and in
school...therefore, there is not much of a need there.
Things that families do need...
Anything to clean with: mops, trash bags, cleaning supplies, etc. As you can imagine
this water is nasty and filled with stuff you wouldn't want in your home. Over 15 of
our church members and an additional 7-10 families from school received water
throughout their home.
Food: This is a secondary need, but a need nonetheless.
As of this writing, all roads from the principal’s side of town to the school are blocked
off due to floodwaters of Clear Creek which bisects the community.
Sienna Lutheran Academy is in the new and
City. They have 84 students, 6 classrooms a
three campuses founded by the first WELS
ministry serves Spanish and Vietnamese ne
location of a school built in 2012. Below is a
Thank you so much for thinking of us. We h
our country can best support the people wh
flooding.
I know that many of our students would ap
students. Our school didn't have water ent
weren't damaged.
The tornado that went through our campus
landscaping. Our playground was severely
of the actual playground equipment. A lot
to be replaced from tree root systems.
A lot of our trees on our campus are destro
comply with our HOA requirements. This w
around 60 trees. Perhaps we could plant a
We need to replace all of our fencing aroun
Both of our soccer goals need to be replace
as it was carried into a neighboring high sch
both of these by the spring season.
How is school going? I’ll be contacting you soon.
y from Houston as La Crosse is to Milwaukee. Then
changed the lives of thousands. It also affected
s. Mr. Krueger was principal at Lord of Life in
nsen taught for 8 years at Abiding Word Lutheran
er Morgan, teaches at Sienna Lutheran Academy in
se schools and would like to keep you up to date
Christians and how we can help.
Abiding Word Lutheran on the North side of Houston is the only WELS school actually
in Houston. It has been the largest congregation in Houston for many years. They have
102 students in their school and 30 students in their early childhood center. Abiding
Word has 8 teachers and 2 pastors. Here is the letter from their principal.
It was great sharing a few texts with you this morning. Thank you for thinking of our
school and thinking of this creative way to connect your school with the ministry and
students of our school. I know that anything that Word of Life does will be greatly appreciated!
fast growing Houston suburb of Missouri
nd 13 staff. It is part of a ministry with
church in Houston, Christ the Lord. One
ighborhoods. Sienna Plantation is the
letter from their principal.
ave been discussing how people around
o were affected by the hurricane and
preciate cards and letters from your
er the building so students’ belongings
really devastated our playground and
damaged. We may need to replace parts
of our playground border and fill will need
yed. We will need to plant new trees to
ill mean that we might have to purchase
tree in your school's honor.
d our playground area.
d with one of them being totally destroyed
ool’s parking lot. We will need to replace
There aren't any items that I would say that our students would need. We have a good
pipeline of water, food, and supplies. We do have a method to collect any monetary
donations that come in through our website. Our pastors are also in contact with
WELS Care and Relief.
In a phone conversation with the principal I was told that one family in particular lost
everything and that donations, cards and contact will be most appreciated by them.
The congregations in Houston have been
helping their own members and receiving
assistance from one another. Many of the
members are more affluent than you or I
but certainly appreciate our thoughts and
prayers and whatever other token of love
we share like the cards the students will
make.
They have also made it known that gift cards to Kohls, Target, Lowes,
Home Depot, Bed Bath & Beyond and Toys “R” Us can be used by many
members, especially the ones who have lost everything.
This is cheaper and more efficient than collecting and mailing items.
You may also consider giving gifts to aid organizations like WELS
Committee on Relief or JJ Watt. Just do not ever give to an organization
that calls you. Thanks for your donations.

The school bells are currently not
working. A replacement for the
system we currently have has been
out of production for 20 years. We
are getting bids and discussing
options.
Newsletters go home on Mondays.
The doorbell works again.
Be safe dropping off and picking up.
Congratulations to the students who have qualified for the 2017 WISCO
Spelling Bee:
Paulette Flores Grade 5
Regan Huolihan Grade 6
Adrianna Calvert Grade 7
Taylor Stewart Grade 8
The WISCO Spelling Bee is Saturday, October 7th. Students should arrive at
WISCO by 8:15 with two sharpened pencils.
Other students may qualify if they are in the top 75 of all WELS students at
their grade level.
Field trips are an important part of school. In the past few years we have
benefited from donations allowing students to take vacations not allowed for
in the budget. This year, we are looking for donations for the following field
trips:
K4 Field trip to First Stage play Spookly the Square Pumpkin $350.00
7-8 Luther Prep play Writing a Will Can Be Murder $250.00
We thank all the people in the past who have funded a bus, tickets or $20.00
donation toward these trips. We appreciate your support.
