Wet and Wild in the Philippines as August usher in the rainy season in our tropical
country. What are the Top things which comes to mind during the season?
Top of our readers list could be Floods, constant flooding which has become ordinary to
us folks in Manila. It also is the ghost month in the Chinese Lunar calendar that usually
is a bad omen, a month that is avoided by businessmen to do big transactions or launch
a product. Basically a rest month as this is the gloomiest season in an otherwise very
sun shiny country.
So what do we do during this period? Probably just going thru the motion and doing our
routines anticipating September or Ber months as we fondly call that will officially start
the Christmas Season in a Christmas Crazed country.
Or maybe just stay home and watch your favorite Facebook or Youtube artist like our
Cover Girl Ange Villaflor. A petite beauty that has an equally beautiful voice that could
launch a million retweets in the cyberworld!

Breathtaking Batanes!
Never have I been to a place in the Philippines that made me not want to leave!
A visit here would bring a lot of joy to your inner outdoorsman and wanderlusts!

This island chain or archipelago province is in the
Cagayan Valley region, and is the northernmost
province in the country. A visit here would bring a lot
of joy to outdoorsman and wanderlusts like me. I’ve been
to a lot of Philippine provinces, probably more than half
already, and it seems like it’s impossible that I stay home
for a long period of time =) Batanes is honestly a dream
come true. Let me guide you on a few basics:
TRANSPORTATION
The fastest way of going to Batanes is of course by plane,
and if coming from Manila, it’ll only take less than 2 hours.
Local airlines who cater Batanes flights are Philippine
Airlines, SkyJet, Sky Pasada, Wakay Air and Platinum
Skies.
Always plan ahead and be rain/sun ready when visiting
Batanes. Weather in this province is very unpredictable.
I’ve been here twice, and I can assure you, even if you
come during summer, you may experience downpour, or
face strong winds. Also, don’t limit your stay to just 3d2n
or 4d3n because there’s a possibility you’ll get stranded
in one of the Islands if weather is bad. When traveling to
Batanes, it’s safe to plan your leave for 5-7 days. This will
also give you peace of mind when visiting the island chain
so you won’t get fired from work when you get offloaded
or aground.
Tour prices vary in Batanes. Whether you’re taking a van
tour, or tricy tour. You’ll have to coordinate with your tour
provider (if you arranged one prior to your trip), or have
it fixed upon arriving (still okay), your homestay can also
help you with this. You can also rent bicycles! I rented one
so I could tour the town and go to Naidi Hills for the iconic
Batanes lighthouse/Sunset. If you wish to go to a specific
place in Basco that’s not part of the tour, e.g. a restaurant,
coffee or pizza shop – all are local, you can rent a tricy.
LIFESTYLE
When it comes to lifestyle, the typical way of life in
Batanes is very old-fashioned. Locals here don’t depend on
technology too much in their everyday lives. I very much
liked how simple life is in Batanes, where I almost forgot I
brought gadgets with me. Majority of the human life span
in Batanes would reach 90+, there’s close to zero pollution,
and has 0% crime rate (based on my most recent visit last
May 2017) – this is pretty self-explanatory.
An Ivatan traditional house is made of stone, where the
roof is made of dried cogon grass. The oldest one is called
“House of Dakay” and is part of south batan tour.
FOOD
Now when it comes to food, you’ll have plenty of options in
Basco, while in Sabtang (Normally half day tour only) and
Itbayat (where food is quite expensive, but you can still
cook if you’ll stay in a homestay, and brought any goods
from Basco) you’ll have limited to expensive choices.
There are many canteens and locally-owned restaurants
in Basco Island, so if you are not the cooking type of
person, you’re safe! I said cooking type because most of
the accommodations here are homestays where you can
cook your own food, and probably save a little money. I
brought canned goods when I traveled here, so I did save
quite a lot.
ENTERTAINMENT
Batanes is heaven for photographers and videographers. A
lot of prenuptial shoots and weddings happen in the island
chain. Who doesn’t want to be married in one of the most
beautiful places in the Philippines right?
There are no movie houses, nor malls in Batanes, and
that’s a good thing! Because you’ll get as close to nature
and the simplest form of living while here. Network signal
for mobile data is also very weak in all the islands, so
you might as well leave your phone in your bag and enjoy
the breathtaking views with no distraction. If you need to
access your email or browse the internet very urgently,
there’s an internet cafe in town, though I didn’t need to
utilize it, so I can’t say how fast the speed is.

MEET SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 8
As expected, the Galaxy Note 8 arrived with a stunning Gorilla Glass 5 protected glass
sandwiched metal frame with sleek and smooth curves all over. The position of the
fingerprint scanner behind is still awkward though.
What’s interesting here is its size. Like its Galaxy S8 / Galaxy S8+ siblings with 18:9:5
screen aspect ratio, the Galaxy Note arrived in a smaller than expected form factor for
a phablet. Even if it has a HUGE 6.3 inch WQHD screen, the body of this phone has the
same size of most 5.7 and even some 5.5 inch screened smartphones. It’s the effect of its
stunning 18:9:5 screen aspect ratio that has very slim top, bottom, and side bezels. As a
result, the phone is easy to hold even if it is a phablet!
Moreover, the handset packs IP68 water and dust resistance. It means that the device is
protected from 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes.
BEASTLY HARDWARE!
On the hardware part, it’s basically the Galaxy S8+ with more RAM and smaller storage
and battery capacity. It has the powerful 2.3 GHz 64 bit Exynos 8895 octa core processor
built under the 10nm process paired with 6 GB RAM, 64 GB expandable storage, and 3,300
of fast charging battery.
We don’t know why they made the battery capacity smaller coming from the 3,600 mAh of
Galaxy S8+, knowing Samsung, they know how to make battery efficient devices. Also, in
other parts of the world, the Note 8 has a 128 GB variant.
Let’s hope that Samsung Mobile Philippines will consider to bring it here.
THE ULTIMATE DUAL CAMERA!
Going to the camera part, the Galaxy Note 8 is dubbed as the “Ultimate Dual Camera” on a
smartphone today.
This machine is loaded with a dual camera setup behind, a first from the company. It
includes the same great 12 MP f/1.7 RGB sensor with DSLR grade Dual Pixel focus and
multi-frame tech. It’s paired with another 12 MP f/2.4 telephoto lens for 2x optical or
lossless zoom.
It’s also the first smartphone in the world to have Dual OIS for super stabilized photos
and videos on a mobile device. It even has the “Live Focus” mode which can blur the
background (bokeh effect) while taking the photo that’s even adjustable after taking the
photo.
For selfies, it has the same 8 MP f/1.7 w/ AF, wide angle lens, and screen flash. The initial
shots we took, we are very impressed on the stability and speed of focus of this phone.
Colors are amazingly very lively and it is stunning in detail for a smartphone. It can even
easy take photos with deep bokeh on auto mode.

‘Despacito’ Drops From Top
of Billboard Hot 100!
Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito,” featuring Justin Bieber, cedes the
summit to Taylor Swift after a record-tying 16 weeks at No. 1, while Logic &
Payne earn their first top 10s.
As previously reported, Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” leaps from No. 77 to
No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100chart (dated Sept. 16), following its first full week of data
tracking. It soars to the top with the highest weekly streaming and sales sums for a track
in 2017, and breaks the record for the most weekly streams ever for a song by a woman.
Also in the Hot 100’s top 10, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito,” featuring Justin
Bieber, departs the summit after a record-tying 16 weeks at No. 1; Logic’s “1-800-273-
8255,” featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid, bounds 29-9; and Liam Paynebecomes the third
member of One Direction to notch a solo top 10, as “Strip That Down,” featuring Quavo,
pushes 11-10.
Down to No. 2, “Despacito” remains tied with Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s 16-week
1995-96 No. 1 for the most weeks spent at the apex in the Hot 100’s 59-year history.
“Despacito” also drops to No. 2 on the Digital Song Sales chart after a record 17 weeks at
No. 1, with 76,000 downloads sold (down 6 percent) in the week ending Aug. 31, according
to Nielsen Music.
On the Streaming Songs chart, it slips to No. 3 after a record 16 weeks on top, with 39.5
million U.S. streams (down 11 percent) in the week ending Aug. 31. (Swift’s “Look” takes
over atop both tallies, ruling the latter with the top total ever for a song by a woman:
84.4 million.) On Radio Songs, “Despacito” descends 5-6 (after five prior weeks at No. 1),
drawing 87 million in all-format airplay audience (down 17 percent) in the week ending
Sept. 3. “Despacito” remains atop Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart, which it leads for a
31st week.
Cardi B’s breakthrough hit “Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)” holds at its No. 3 Hot 100 high.
It keeps at No. 2 on Streaming Songs (42.2 million, up 1 percent); slips 8-10 on Digital
Song Sales (35,000, down 4 percent); and bumps 20-17 on Radio Songs (55 million, up
11 percent). The track spends a second week at No. 1 on the Hot Rap Songs chart and
becomes Cardi B’s first No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs(2-1).
After the trio performed the track at the MTV Video Music Awards Aug. 27, Logic’s “1-800-
273-8255,” featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid, vaults 29-9 on the Hot 100. The song soars
22-3 on Digital Song Sales (69,000, up 258 percent) and 15-12 on Streaming Songs (20
million, up 20 percent) and debuts at No. 41 on Radio Songs (30 million, up 21 percent).
The song, from Logic’s first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, Everybody (which debuted
atop the May 27-dated chart), marks the rapper’s first Hot 100 top 10. (“1-800-273-8255”
doubles as the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.)
Khalid also earns his first Hot 100 top 10, while Cara collects her fourth, following her
own “Here” (No. 5, February 2016) and “Scars to Your Beautiful” (No. 8, February 2017) and
her duet with Zedd, “Stay” (No. 7, May).
Meanwhile, Quavo logs his fourth solo Hot 100 top 10, after scoring one as a member of
Migos, whose “Bad and Boujee,” featuring Lil Uzi Vert (who debuts at No. 1 on the Sept.
16-dated Billboard 200 with Luv Is Rage 2, his first leader on the list), topped the Hot 100
for three weeks in January-February.

Why are we praising Conor
McGregor for losing to Floyd
Mayweather?
“You don’t know a damn thing about boxing.”
Listen to people argue about the sport (and all fight fans ever do is argue) and you’ll
inevitably hear that accusation. It’s the standard way of dismissing someone who doesn’t
agree with you about some piece of boxing arcana, but it’s also so commonly thrown
around because two men beating each other up with their fists can look simple -- and
boxing is anything but.
So it’s my turn: It’s still strange to see how many people don’t seem to get what they
watched last Saturday night.
Conor McGregor deserves a lot of credit for landing this fight, taking his preparations
seriously and committing to tryi Let’s start with a basic observation. It appears McGregor
did not learn much about boxing during his training camp. He did not learn how to throw
a punch. He doesn’t know how to start the motion in his legs and hips and transfer his
body weight through the punch. He doesn’t have even average power in the ring. He also
did not have any grasp of the basic rules. It was quite shocking to hear McGregor admit
in the postfight press conference that he was “using valuable energy here to get to this
man’s back and we’re just being reset.” Was he under the impression that he could throw
punches to an opponent’s back? Not to mention all the holding of the head and rabbit
punches. It makes one wonder what the point was of having referee Joe Cortez attend
McGregor’s training camp leading up to the fight.
But the ruse gets pretty obvious when one observes the simple things Floyd chose not
to do to win given his limited resources in boxing skill and experience. What he shouldn’t
be given credit for is his performance -- for “lasting” 10 rounds with a historically elite
fighter (who is no longer elite).
The truth is McGregor was merely a prop in a perfectly executed piece of theater. He didn’t
survive 10 rounds with Floyd Mayweather, he was carried for 10 rounds by Mayweather.
Until Mayweather had enough and stopped the fight.
Fighters get aggressively offensive for a few reasons: They realize their opponent needs
time and space to work and they want to deny that time and space. They realize their
opponent is tiring and looking for ways to rest and they want to deny opportunities for
rest. Or, they realize their opponent doesn’t have enough power to hurt them and so they
want to get in range to get off their offense because they’re not worried about being hit.
McGregor himself can be forgiven for the hilarious assertion that he was outboxing
Mayweather early. With Floyd throwing 28 total punches in the first three rounds
according to CompuBox, it might have felt that way to him. More bizarre was his assertion
that he thought he hurt Floyd during the fight. When? And with what? The much talkedabout
uppercut that McGregor landed in Round 1 is illustrative. It was well timed and
landed clean -- and had precisely zero effect on Mayweather.
None of this should make anyone upset. Together, the two men put on a performance that
left the audience satisfied. But let’s not pretend we got a better fight than we expected;
there was no fight. What the two men delivered, or rather, what Mayweather was able to
engineer, was the entertaining show he had promised all long.
