the history of wilmette<br />
The village is named for Archange Ouilmette, a woman of French<br />
and Potawatomi heritage. With her husband, Antoine, she and<br />
her family moved north from the first settlement in Chicago<br />
to take up residence in a cabin by Lake Michigan on 1280 acres that<br />
were granted to her under the Treaty of Prairie du Chien of 1829.<br />
Long after the Ouilmettes had left for Iowa to join their Potawatomie<br />
kin in 1838, the area remained sparsely settled, save for a few hardy<br />
pioneers near the lake and the first families who had begun to farm<br />
the area west of the ridge along which Ridge Road runs today. From<br />
these early settlements sprang two very different communities: the<br />
Village of Wilmette, incorporated in 1872, and the Village of Gross<br />
Point, incorporated in 1874. The first was founded by mostly Anglo-<br />
Protestant settlers from the East who hoped to develop the village<br />
as a commuter suburb, while the second, to the west of Ridge Road,<br />
was comprised of mostly Roman Catholic, German-speaking farmers,<br />
craftsmen, and shop-owners. Their histories formally merged in the 1920s when Gross Point was annexed by Wilmette, but each of the<br />
two areas has long retained a distinctive character.<br />
As you explore Wilmette, you will find many places whose colorful and intriguing histories are intertwined with the larger history of the<br />
village itself: the 1873 depot, rescued and moved in the early 1970s and now a restaurant; Roemer Park, the local Little League’s 1950s<br />
ballpark; the amazing Baha’i Temple, which took decades to build; Wilmette Harbor and Gillson Park, both by-products of a remarkable<br />
engineering project undertaken over 100 years ago; Plaza del Lago, in what was once the controversial area known as No Man’s Land; the<br />
brick streets of Wilmette, laid down around 1900 and restored during the Great Depression. The details of all of these histories, and of a<br />
great many others, can be found and explored at the Wilmette Historical Museum, which is itself in a storied place, the former Gross Point<br />
Village Hall, 609 Ridge Road.<br />

Kenilworth is located approximately 17 miles north of downtown Chicago. It is the newest of the eight Chicago suburban<br />
communities that make up “the North Shore,” and is the only one developed as a planned community. Since its incorporation, the<br />
beauty of Kenilworth has attracted many distinguished residents including architect and town planner George W. Maher, who<br />
was an early purchaser. A contemporary and colleague of Frank Lloyd Wright, Maher, in due course, proceeded to design approximately<br />
37 homes in the village. His town planning expertise and civic dedication further enriched the village with most of the parks and civic<br />
sculpture – including the entry fountain, stone benches, planter urns, bridges and entry pylons – that residents enjoy today.<br />

• In December of 2016, the Village completed<br />
Phase 1 of the Kenilworth 2023 Green Streets<br />
Program. The project incorporated the use<br />
of porous asphalt, porous parkways, and<br />
underground storm water detention to reduce<br />
the amount of water entering the MWRD’s<br />
system. Due to the positive benefits of the<br />
project, the Village received over $1 Million<br />
in funding form the Metropolitan Water<br />
Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.<br />
• In late 2016, the Village began construction<br />
of a booster pump station with the purpose of<br />
purchasing water from the Village of Wilmette.<br />
The Presidents of both Kenilworth and<br />
Wilmette officially switched on the pumps on<br />
January 16, 2017, making the start of a 34 year<br />
water purchasing agreement thorugh 2050.<br />
Kenilworth residents will enjoy more favorable<br />
water rates through purchasing from Wilmette<br />
rather than continuing to operate the Village’s<br />
own water plant.<br />
• In 2016, the Village received a grant from the<br />
Federal Surface Transportation Program to<br />
resurface Kenilworth Avenue from Green Bay<br />
Road to Ridge Road. The grant, which was<br />
administered through IDOT, covered 70% of the<br />
project cost. Additional funding is being secured<br />
to repave the rest of Kenilworth Avenue from<br />
Green Bay Road to Sheridan.<br />
• The first part of phase 1 of the Kenilworth 2023<br />
Infrastructure Improvement Plan was completed<br />
in 2014. With 94% of fire hydrants west of Green<br />
Bay Road below pressure targets, addressing<br />
poor water pressure at fire hydrants was one of<br />
the major program goals. The first major water<br />
project was completed with replacements of<br />

the water mains on portions of Roger, Brier and<br />
Melrose. The new 12” water mains dramatically<br />
improved the water pressure in the area.<br />
• In 2011, Kenilworth responded to resident<br />
requests to improve the recycling program.<br />
At that time, only 4% of trash was diverted to<br />
recycling. A new program started in 2013 with<br />
a goal to increase recycling to 30%. Thanks to<br />
the mindful cooperation from residents, 38% of<br />
trash was recycled in 2014.<br />
• The Kenilworth beach is open for weddings and<br />
other events. This scenic location overlooking<br />
the glistening waters of Lake Michigan is ideal for<br />
destination weddings that are not too far from<br />
home. There are options for renting parts of the<br />
actual beach or terraces overlooking the water.<br />
• Kenilworth consistently ranks in the top tier of<br />
the nation’s wealthiest neighborhoods. Forbes<br />
ranks Kenilworth as the 4th most affluent<br />
neighborhood in the United States for 2013. The<br />
highest ranking came in 2011 when Kenilworth<br />
ranked 2nd most affluent in the nation.<br />
• In August 2009, Village Board adopted a Planned<br />
Unit Development (PUD) process for possible<br />
redevelopment projects as well as more lenient<br />
parking regulations for the Business District.<br />
• In February 2011, Village Board adopted new<br />
sign regulations and updated appearance review<br />
processes.<br />
• In October 2013, the Green Bay Road<br />
Transportation and Streetscape Plan report was<br />
completed which addresses issues related to<br />
traffic management, parking, bicycle mobility,<br />
pedestrian safety, access to transit and Village<br />
character on and around Green Bay Road.<br />

Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago to<br />

Green Streets Program. The project will reduce residential<br />

The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) awarded<br />
Kenilworth a 2012 Community Planning Program grant. The<br />
$75,000 grant provided funding and planning assistance for the<br />
Kenilworth Corridor Transportation and Streetscape Plan. This<br />
plan was for a balanced multi-model transportation system for<br />
safe and efficient movement of vehicles, pedestrian, and cyclists<br />
through the Green Bay Road Corridor and to improve access to<br />
the Village’s train station. The plan serves as a guide for potential<br />
changes in existing land uses, infrastructure improvements, and<br />
enhancements for the redevelopment of the Green Bay Road<br />
Corridor into a pedestrian-oriented district with commercial<br />
mixed-use development.<br />

The Metropolitan Mayor’s Caucus awarded Kenilworth a 2012<br />
Urban Forest Grant for pursuing tree restoration efforts and<br />
minimizing the threat of Emerald Ash Borer disease. The $10,000<br />
grant funds replacement of infected Ash trees with diverse tree<br />
population.<br />

The Village has achieved the highest credit rating, “AAA” from<br />
Moody’s Investors Service. The AAA rating allows Kenilworth to<br />
take advantage of the lowest possible interest rates in municipal<br />
markets, saving taxpayers thousands of dollars in debt charges.<br />

The Police Department has received grant funding awards<br />
from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the<br />
U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ). The IDOT grant provided<br />
funding under the Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program to<br />
conduct multiple traffic safety enforcement campaigns. The<br />
USDOJ grant awarded funding for the costs of bulletproof vests<br />

In the beginning ...<br />
Twenty years<br />
after Winnetka<br />
and Wilmette<br />
were incorporated,<br />
Kenilworth was a tangle<br />
of woods, bordered by<br />
dirt roads, crisscrossed<br />
by wagon tracks, used<br />
as pasture for the cattle<br />
of neighboring residents<br />
and a field laboratory for<br />
botany students from<br />
Northwestern University.<br />
In November 1889, Joseph<br />
Sears purchased more<br />
than 200 acres east of the<br />
railroad between North<br />
Road (now Winnetka<br />
Avenue) and the Mahoney<br />
Farm. After a visit to<br />
Kenilworth in beautiful Warwickshire, England, Sears named the land Kenilworth and formed the<br />
Kenilworth Company to develop it according to the plans of several distinguished architects. Two<br />
years later a dozen homes had been built, six of which are still standing. Kenilworth Avenue had<br />
been laid out straight from the new railroad station to the lake for an unobstructed view. Streets<br />
parallel with it were planned to run on a northeasterly, southwesterly angle so the sun would reach<br />
every room in the house sometime during the day.<br />
The water and gas works, post office, telegraph and telephone services were in operation.<br />
Two and one-half miles of macadam streets, the first on the North Shore, had been paved and<br />
lighted by gas lamps with three miles of concrete sidewalks, gas mains and sewers. During the<br />
Colombian Exposition of 1893, Kenilworth, considered a model community, attracted visitors from<br />
all over the world.<br />
The population reached the 300 required for incorporation on February 4, 1896. By the turn of<br />
the century, the North Shore Railroad was permitted to lay tracks through the Village. There were<br />
beaches at the foot of Kenilworth Avenue and a nine-hole golf course at the southeast edge of<br />
the Village. Streets, originally named for American authors, were renamed by using names from<br />
Sir Walter Scott’s Kenilworth. The first years of this century saw<br />
the organization of the park district, installation of an underground<br />
electrical system and the building of a public school and several<br />
churches. In the 1920s, mail service started as well as tax-supported<br />
fire and police service was developed. A group of 48 citizens formed<br />
the Kenilworth Realty Association and subscribed for nearly<br />
$300,000 in bonds to purchase the North Shore Golf Club and other<br />
property west of the tracks extending the boundaries of Kenilworth<br />
west to Ridge Road. The Mahoney farm was subdivided and Mahoney<br />
Park was given to the Village by the heirs of Daniel Mahoney. The<br />
Village had grown to 0.6 of a square mile. The last land was purchased<br />
by the Village in 1964 from the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad<br />
and landscaped for a park at the railway station.<br />

steady growth, designed to<br />
acquire and preserve land for<br />
the recreational enjoyment<br />
of village residents. Its<br />
mission is to enrich the<br />
quality of community life<br />
and promote wholesome<br />
activities through creative<br />
programming for people of<br />
all ages and abilities, while<br />
protecting open space and<br />
natural resources for future<br />

The Park District oversees<br />
314.4 acres of parks and playground properties which include<br />
a nature center and a portion of the Green Bay Bike Trail,<br />
along with a spectacular lakefront, that combine to create the<br />
ambiance that is one of the primary reasons people want to live<br />
in, and continue to move to, our community.<br />
The Park District also owns and operates several facilities which<br />
include the Community Recreation Center, 3000 Glenview<br />
Road; Centennial Recreation Complex, 2300 Old Glenview<br />
Road; The Mallinckrodt Center, 1041A Ridge Road; Wilmette<br />
Golf Club, 3900 Fairway Drive; Wilmette Platform Tennis Club,<br />
3551 Lake Avenue; the Lakeview Center, Wallace Bowl and<br />
Gillson Beach House located on the waterfront.<br />
The Park District is an autonomous government agency,<br />
with a Board of Park Commissioners elected village-wide on<br />
a non-partisan basis. It is empowered to levy taxes, acquire<br />
land, develop parks, build and operate recreation facilities and<br />
establish programs. There are about 70 full-time employees, but<br />
part-time and seasonal employees swell the ranks to over 1,000<br />
individuals, many of them village youth, especially during the<br />

Residents receive a Leisure Guide magazine in the mail three<br />
times a year which details Park District programs and special<br />
events. Separate Tennis and Summer Camp Guides are mailed<br />
out annually. The Park District also maintains a website<br />
which provides online registration, up to date information<br />
regarding facilities, programs and special events, calendars<br />
and downloadable forms and newsletters. It can be accessed at<br />

The Park District receives 30% of revenue from taxes; the<br />
remainder is user fees. The Wilmette Park District is the largest<br />
employer in the Village, employing over 1,000 staff including<br />

The Kenilworth Park District was organized in March of 1906. It is under the<br />
management of a Board of Commissioners which consists of five elected<br />
members from the Kenilworth community. The Park District has the power<br />
to levy taxes, issue bonds, and acquire property and equipment necessary for the<br />
maintenance of Park properties. During its history, the Park District has enjoyed a<br />
close working relationship with the Village of Kenilworth; sharing staff, equipment,<br />
and facilities. The Park District consists of 4 full-time employees largely responsible<br />
for maintaining over 15 acres of Park and Village open space throughout Kenilworth.<br />
Park District Programs<br />
The Kenilworth Park District offers a variety of programs to Kenilworth residents. The<br />
following is a list of programs provided by the Kenilworth Park District:<br />
Village House (600 Ivy Ct.): The Park District Village House located on the north end of<br />
Townley Field, is a good location to host group events, birthday parties, or family reunions. The<br />
Village House is available to the public for rent and residential rates are $50; non-resident<br />

Summer Camp: The Park District offers two summer camp options for six weeks during June and July. Little Springs camp is for ages 3 to those entering<br />
1st Grade in fall. Sports Plus camp is for 2nd grade through 6th grade in fall. Activities include art, music, jugglers, magicians, animal shows and more! The<br />
district also has cooking, lacrosse, golf and athletic camps.<br />

Baseball: The Kenilworth Park District is proud to partner with The Strike zone Baseball and Softball Academy to offer top-of-the-line baseball<br />
programming. The Park District offers 8U/9U and 9U/10U Cal Ripken Summer Baseball League. A full list of baseball program offerings can be found on the<br />
Kenilworth Park District website.<br />
T-Ball: In the spring of each year, the Park District offers a four week T-Ball program for Kindergarten and 1st Grade aged children. The program runs for<br />
four consecutive Saturdays during the latter part of April and into early May. Registration forms are available on the Park District page of the website each<br />
spring.<br />
Basketball: The Kenilworth Park District offers a basketball program for 1st through 3rd graders. The program is a great introduction to the sport of<br />
basketball and provides an opportunity for kids to participate on teams with their friends. 1st through 3rd graders participate in a program at Sears School.<br />
Program registration typically takes place in October and November, and the season runs January and February. Registration forms are available on the<br />
Park District website.<br />
Lacrosse: The Kenilworth Park District is proud to offer a Lacrosse Skills camp as part of their Sports Plus Summer camp. To register for this program,<br />
please visit the Park District website.<br />
Kenilworth Assembly Hall: Located at 410 Kenilworth Ave., this nationally historic banquet hall is available for rentals.<br />
In addition to sports programming, the Kenilworth Park District works closely with various garden clubs active in the community on fundraising,<br />
maintenance and improvement projects related to open space throughout the community. Park District support includes assistance with the annual May<br />
plant sale and working with representatives to plan/implement park improvements.<br />

The Bahá’í House of Worship is a<br />
meeting place for people from all over<br />
the world. The building is a symbol of<br />
the unity of humanity. The Temple<br />
and Gardens are serene places,<br />
open to all, for personal prayer and<br />
meditation.<br />
This splendid structure is one of the most recognizable features of the<br />
Wilmette landscape, viewable by sailboat, runners on a lakefront route<br />
and drivers whizzing around the bend on Sheridan road. Busy travelers<br />
are urged to slow their pace and stop by for a spiritually uplifting visit.<br />
The Bahá’í Welcome Center, just west of the Temple, offers videos and<br />
displays that showcase the history and symbolism of this architectural<br />
wonder. This Bahá’í House of Worship is one of only eight in the world,<br />
and welcomes nearly 300,000 visitors each year.<br />
The Bahá’í House of Worship is open to the public. There is no<br />
membership or congregation at the building. Local members of the<br />
Bahá’í Faith gather in their own neighborhoods for prayer, study and<br />
service projects.<br />
In autumn 2017 Bahá’ís will be celebrating the 200th Anniversary of<br />
the Birth of Bahá’u’lláh, the Founder of the Bahá’í Faith. A “Lights of<br />
Unity Festival” series of special events are planned for September,<br />
October, and November to commemorate this special anniversary.<br />
Bahá’u’lláh’s teachings center on the oneness of humanity and offer<br />
hope and healing for the modern world. Visitors to the Bahá’í House of<br />
Worship and Welcome Center are uplifted and encouraged by these<br />
powerful messages of peace and unity.<br />
