Relatively a novel concept in<br />
Bangladesh, Palliative care is an<br />
approach that improves the life<br />
of patients and their families<br />
facing the problem with life-threatening<br />
illness, through the prevention and relief<br />
by means of early identification and<br />
treatment of pain and other problems,<br />
physical, psychosocial and spiritual.<br />
To put across this inspirational memo<br />
among a greater audience, a daylong<br />
workshop titled `Palliative Care : Why It<br />
Should Be in the National Health Policy?’<br />
was held today at the Milton Hall of<br />
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical<br />
University (BSMMU) in city.<br />

Gopal Dutta, Pro-VC Dr Shahidullah<br />
Shikdar as well as Prof Dr Nezamuddin<br />
Ahmed, among others were present to<br />
make their valuable speech. In presence<br />
of mass-media and reps from different<br />
nodes of the society, the workshop<br />
began at 10 am in the morning.<br />
Members of SMB (Society of Musical<br />
Bands in Bangladesh) made out a theme<br />
song titled `Bondhu Tomar Haatta<br />
Barao’ highlighting on the significance<br />
of palliative care. In addition, celebrities<br />
Momtaz MP, Rafiqul Alam, Ferdousi<br />
Priyobhashini, Shahed, Dr Abdun-Nur-<br />
Tushar, ABM Nazmul Haque, Choyonika<br />
BASIS, Canadian High Commission<br />
and CanCham will work together<br />
to explore business and investment<br />
opportunities of Bangladeshi IT<br />
sector in the Canadian market. There will be<br />
a bi-lateral dialog between the organizations<br />
very soon. Mr. Shameem Ahsan, President<br />
of Bangladesh Association of Software<br />
and Information Services (BASIS), said<br />
this while he was attending a seminar on<br />
IT Infrastructure and e-Commerce in the<br />
“Canada Showcase 2015”, a trade fair<br />
organized by Canadian High Commission<br />
and Canada Bangladesh Chamber of<br />
Commerce and Industries (CanCham).<br />
Mr. Shyama Prasad Bepari, Joint Secretary<br />
of ICT Division presided over the seminar<br />
where the High Commissioner of Canada<br />
Mr. Benoit Pierre Laramee was also present.<br />

Speakers made their good point through<br />
an interesting LED presentation and<br />
explained that, about 35 million needs<br />
urgent palliative care out of the 55<br />
million people who die every year<br />
from the total score of a seven billion<br />
people living on this earth. For instance,<br />
7 million passed away from cancer in<br />
2007. Seventy percent of them had to<br />
endure for a period extreme mental and<br />
physical pain before death appeared<br />
to liberate them. Although, we could<br />
and Canada has a good bi-lateral business<br />
relation and the trade between the two<br />
countries is worth over US$ 2 billion. He<br />
also added that the two countries will work<br />
together to develop this further.<br />
Mr. Russell T. Ahmed, Senior Vice President<br />
of BASIS presented an elaborated Presentation<br />
on the present situation of ICT Infrastructure<br />
and e-Commerce in Bangladesh. “The<br />

providing them with little bit of trained<br />
care and help, like easing at the asthma<br />
or cleaning up the wound.<br />
Center of Palliative Care of BSMMU has<br />
been providing palliative care for uncurable<br />
patients on a regular basis since<br />
its inception in 2011. In a recent note,<br />
World Health Organization (WHO)<br />
also asked for its member countries to<br />
endorse palliative care into their national<br />
health policy.<br />
It is incorrect to say, nothing else can we<br />
do. It is skeptic notion and we must get<br />
rid of it. We can always do something<br />
and we must do our best till the end,<br />
is what summarizes the attitude of<br />
palliative care. •<br />
Canadian High Commission and CanCham will Work with BASIS to explore the ICT Sector<br />
is quite fast compared to some of the top<br />
countries in the World and very soon we will<br />
see a revolution in the ICT and e-Commerce<br />
sector of Bangladesh due to this”, he added.<br />

Program, Mr. Don Joyce, Vice President of<br />
Sogema Technologies Inc., Mr. Mostofa<br />
Rafiqul Islam, Chairman of Flora Telecom<br />
were also present at the seminar. •
