Again there is another festival knocking at the door. This religious celebration

Eid Ul-Fitr is the day of thanksgiving and joy. It marks the end
of the month of fasting, and it is when we feel happy and give
thanks to Allah that He enabled us to obey His commands. We
all fasted during the month of Ramadan, and by the end of the month,
we realize that Allah’s commands are good for us; they aim at our
well-being.
Allah does not want to put any burden on us; He gave us the rules of
fasting for our own benefit. Fasting has many benefits for individuals
and for communities. It has spiritual, moral, and physical benefits.
`Eid Ul-Fitr has a deep significance. Its spirit is marked by distinguished
values and virtues:
• Thanksgiving and expressing gratitude to Allah
• Experiencing joy and rejoice
• Receiving the great reward of obeying Allah
• Maintaining ties of kinship
• Taking care of the poor and the needy.

Joy and Rejoice
`Eid is our joy; it is our feast. The month of Ramadan is a test from Almighty. At the end of the month, we experience
a great sense of achievement and closeness to Allah. It is the joy of spiritual fulfillment.
The day of `Eid Ul-Fitr is time for celebration. On that day, we should not indulge in insulting or abusing others, as this
may detract from the achievements of the month of Ramadan. `Eid Ul-Fitr is a day of decent happiness and joy.
However, in celebrating `Eid Ul-Fitr, we should enjoy our time by sticking to what is permissible and avoiding what
is unlawful.
Great Reward
The Day of `Eid Ul-Fitr is a blessed day for those who have observed their duty toward Allah during their fast in
Ramadan. In heavens, `Eid Ul-Fitr is called the day of reward.
It is reported in a Prophetic hadith that, on the day of `Eid Ul-Fitr, the angels stand on both sides of the roads and
“Allah has forgiven you. Return to
your homes with the best of good
and glad tidings. This is the day of
reward. This day is called the day
of reward in heaven as well.”

Maintaining Ties of Kinship
`Eid Ul-Fitr is a day when Muslims become more keen on visiting their relatives and friends. In the process, they
exchange greetings and maintain ties of kinship. We should all visit our relatives or at least call them. Muslim
brothers and sisters should greet one another by saying “Happy `Eid” or “May Allah accept your good deeds and
ours.”
Taking Care of the Poor and the Needy
Although Almighty Allah commanded us to take care of the needy, the poor, and the orphans throughout the
year, taking care of them during `Eid Ul-Fitr and `Eid Ul-Adha is given greater emphasis. Allah and His Prophet
instructed us to fulfill the needs of the poor and the needy in both `Eids, so that they would not be in need of
begging.
This is the spirit of `Eid Ul-Fitr, so let’s always keep this spirit among us. Let’s strengthen our bonds with
our Creator and with one another. Let’s be more united and more and more committed to righteousness as
individuals, families, and communities.
Finally, here are some tips that can help us all keep the spirit of `Eid Ul-Fitr:
• Before you finish your i`tikaf (spiritual retreat in the mosque), greet all your brothers and sisters, saying
“Happy `Eid” or “May Allah accept your good deeds and ours.”

present ceremony as Special Guest. Mr. Lee Yun-young, Hon’ble
Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Bangladesh was present
as Guest of Honour.
The Weekly Financial Mirror started its journey with a Nobel
vision to promote country’s private sector and a feeling of
humility to serve this nation as a truly independent business

EID
AND THE TRADITION
One of my colleagues told me that I have
to pay her SALAMI when we meet each
other after Eid as I am elder than her. I
was so surprised, I didn’t ever hear any
one saying something to the colleagues, but then I
thought that there lied her possession over me and
then I felt her charm. But the worst part is that I have
to be aware of my pocket because many younger ones
are there who deserves the same!
As the chief holy fiesta for the mass of Muslims,
the carnival of Eid has turn out to be a way of life of
Bangladesh. The administration of Bangladesh asserts
for three days holiday on Eid. Loads of people staying
in city who have their ancestors or parents in rural
community go to their country side homes to meet
associations and have a good time together.
On Eid day, Muslims wake up early in the
morning—always before sunrise— offer Salatul Fajr,
wear new dress and start the day with a smile. EID
PRYERS are held all over the country, in open Eidgah
or inside mosques. During the day people embrace
each other. It is also a tradition for juniors to get a
small sum of money as a souvenir which is called
SALAMI (during Eid-Ul-Fitr). In the countryside,

the Eid carnival is observed with great
elaboration. In some areas Eid fares and
circuses are arranged. Different types of
traditional games are played on this occasion.
People play music, visit each other’s houses
and eat special food. Watching movies and
television has also become a vital part of the
Eid celebration. All TV channels broadcast
special program for several days on this
event.
For Muslims, Eid is the occasion of
showing appreciation to ALLAH and recalling
HIM, and an occasion of entertainment.
Eid marks the end of the Holy Hajj. Eid
is celebrated for more than three days.
Common greetings during this holiday are
Eid Mubarak or Eid Sa‘eed. In addition,
many countries have their own greetings
in the local language. Muslims are expected
to excuse and overlook any dissimilarity
or enmity. Gifts are given to children and
relatives. Girls apply Mehendi or Hena.
Earlier it was a tradition to welcome the Eid
Moon with the Mehendi hand on the Eid night. But I don’t see it now
happening.
For the majority people of Bangladesh, Eid means meeting with family
and friends. But it’s not celebrated consistently, as some can’t afford the
holiday rituals or some may not get the day off. The rickshaw pullers
and the Maid are the foremost example of this part. Some say traditions
are fading with the generation. Still, many say it is a sacred time for
family and friends.
The meaning of Eid differs from person to person: For the men
-Eid means a lot of expectations, presents for family, which actually
strengthen the bondage. Personal bond become stronger, and we forget
all little disagreements. The young says that they look forward to
shopping for Eid and the money given by the elders. The working ladies
say that, Eid means preparing dishes for the family and have class time
with them. Watching TV and gossiping with family is only possible
during Eid days as they remain in the office on the other days. For the
poor Eid is the instance when they receive countless money without and
accountably. And of course this is the time when they can eat as much
as rich food as they want. But the helping hands of our house don’t like
this event so much, as they have a lot to do on the day.
From corner to corner of Bangladesh the largest religious festival of
the year for Muslims is Eid. Families exchange presents, enjoy traditional
foods and spend time together. Eid is such an affluent part
of customs in our country
that even people of other
belief enjoy the day with
their Muslim friends. But
customs are varying among
new generation. They
found out their own ways
of celebration. Enjoying
the day from the morning,
collecting SALAMI for
the whole day, visiting
the neighbors’ house
and relatives is just like
a fairy tales for them.
It is really a question
whether is
EID a holyday or a
holiday for
them.•
