Towfique
a self made artist
who’s born to create
revolution
A
By: Mahrin Samdani
singer, an artist or a performer is not just
born each is created. One of the finest
examples is TowfiqueAhmed, who is
not only a singer rather a revolutionary
artist whose songs, lyrics and tunes speak for our
nation. His early childhood was nurtured with the
influence of musical instruments like tabla and
drums. He has always been greatly influenced and
inspired by Rock music. His deep indulgence and
devotion have made him a revolutionary artist.
Back in 2000 during a casual jamming session
with the famous vocalist Shabbir of Metal Maze he
surprisingly wrote a song lyric and since then he
has introduceda number of tremendously written
lyrics. Later, while studying in Jhenaidaha Cadet
College his band PIERO was crowned as the best
band at Inter Cadet College Band Competition in
the year 2005.
MUSIC
In the year 2006 he went
to England and stayed
there for six years,
during that span he got
immensely involved
with Rap songs. The
first Rap written by
him back in 2007
called PROTISSRUTI.
Rap is a kind of music
which truly brought a
revolutionary change in
him and Bidrohi is one
of the heroic reflections
of such revolutionary
music. The album
Rajotto was his first
debut album was
released in 2010 under
the Ektar Record Label.
The album soon after
the release has spotted
massive response and
is considered as one of
their greatest hits till
now. Besides, the lead
vocalist Towfique the
album has Faisal Roddy,
one of the famous
musicians in our music
industry along with the
British Music Producer
Gareth Redfarn.The
same year the tracks
Bidrohi and Nagordola
from the album Rajotto
was about to be released
in the UK under
Universal Record Label
but plan got postponed
as Towfique came back
to Bangladesh in 2010.
In 2010, he came up
with some of the brilliant
compositions which
include; Attokothon,
Khapagaan, Desh O
Durnity, ShomoyerGoti,
Ovijaanand many other
majestic soundtracks.
Each song is not only
composed of fine tunes
and lyric rather each
song is the spark of
true patriotism, youth
and our society. In
2014, he came up with
another motivational
album called Dashotto.
Later both the albums
RAJOTTO and
DASHOTTO were under
the major record label
of Bangladesh G Series.
Some of his inspirations
include; Black,
Artcell, Shironamhin,
Nochiketa, 2 Pac,
Lowkey, Eminem,
Linkin Park, and so on.
Recently, hehas done
playback for some of the
contemporary Bangla
movies which include:
Zero Degree, song:
Adit feat Towfique-
Anondodhara and title
song for a film called U
Turn. A Malaysian filmed
named “Werewolf
from Bangladesh” has
requested him to insert
BIDROHI in their film
where the condition
of Bangladeshi
Workers in Malaysia
has been portrayed
metaphorically. Besides
these, he is sooner
going to introduce a
fusion movement titled
“BokaderGaan!” The
album is going to have
Adit, Abdullah, Shoeb
along with Towfique.
One of the songs
named 52 has already
got released and the
music video got viral
for the exclusive 21st
Relatively a novel concept in
Bangladesh, Palliative care is an
approach that improves the life
of patients and their families
facing the problem with life-threatening
illness, through the prevention and relief
by means of early identification and
treatment of pain and other problems,
physical, psychosocial and spiritual.
To put across this inspirational memo
among a greater audience, a daylong
workshop titled `Palliative Care : Why It
Should Be in the National Health Policy?’
was held today at the Milton Hall of
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical
University (BSMMU) in city.
Vice Chancellor of BSMMU Prof Dr Pran
Gopal Dutta, Pro-VC Dr Shahidullah
Shikdar as well as Prof Dr Nezamuddin
Ahmed, among others were present to
make their valuable speech. In presence
of mass-media and reps from different
nodes of the society, the workshop
began at 10 am in the morning.
Members of SMB (Society of Musical
Bands in Bangladesh) made out a theme
song titled `Bondhu Tomar Haatta
Barao’ highlighting on the significance
of palliative care. In addition, celebrities
Momtaz MP, Rafiqul Alam, Ferdousi
BASIS, Canadian High Commission
and CanCham will work together
to explore business and investment
opportunities of Bangladeshi IT
sector in the Canadian market. There will be
a bi-lateral dialog between the organizations
very soon. Mr. Shameem Ahsan, President
of Bangladesh Association of Software
and Information Services (BASIS), said
this while he was attending a seminar on
IT Infrastructure and e-Commerce in the
“Canada Showcase 2015”, a trade fair
organized by Canadian High Commission
and Canada Bangladesh Chamber of
Commerce and Industries (CanCham).
Mr. Shyama Prasad Bepari, Joint Secretary
of ICT Division presided over the seminar
where the High Commissioner of Canada
Mr. Benoit Pierre Laramee was also present.
Mr. Laramee mentioned that Bangladesh
the ceremony.
Speakers made their good point through
an interesting LED presentation and
explained that, about 35 million needs
urgent palliative care out of the 55
million people who die every year
from the total score of a seven billion
people living on this earth. For instance,
7 million passed away from cancer in
2007. Seventy percent of them had to
endure for a period extreme mental and
physical pain before death appeared
to liberate them. Although, we could
and Canada has a good bi-lateral business
relation and the trade between the two
countries is worth over US$ 2 billion. He
also added that the two countries will work
together to develop this further.
Mr. Russell T. Ahmed, Senior Vice President
of BASIS presented an elaborated Presentation
on the present situation of ICT Infrastructure
and e-Commerce in Bangladesh. “The
Development of e-Commerce in Bangladesh
have ensured them a painless demise
providing them with little bit of trained
care and help, like easing at the asthma
or cleaning up the wound.
Center of Palliative Care of BSMMU has
been providing palliative care for uncurable
patients on a regular basis since
its inception in 2011. In a recent note,
World Health Organization (WHO)
also asked for its member countries to
endorse palliative care into their national
health policy.
It is incorrect to say, nothing else can we
do. It is skeptic notion and we must get
rid of it. We can always do something
and we must do our best till the end,
is what summarizes the attitude of
palliative care. •
Canadian High Commission and CanCham will Work with BASIS to explore the ICT Sector
is quite fast compared to some of the top
countries in the World and very soon we will
see a revolution in the ICT and e-Commerce
sector of Bangladesh due to this”, he added.
Mr. Masud Rahman, President of CanCham,
Mr. Anir Chowdhury, Policy Advisor of a2i
Program, Mr. Don Joyce, Vice President of
Sogema Technologies Inc., Mr. Mostofa
Challenge your personal style
with the current summer trends!
Figuring out what to get dressed each morning when your brain is only
50% on is hard enough. Doing it with the expectation that your entire
body is going to transform into a bloated, sweating, frizzled, frazzled
mess as soon as you step out of your (hopefully) air-conditioned abode is
enough to send you back to bed.
It’s rough out there for anyone trying to project a certain amount of look in
the summer, aside from the fresh-from-the-gym, damp one. It’s all about
thinking strategically and taking a few shortcuts that ensure maximum
breeziness. To help, we have come up with numbers of magnificent tips that
will keep you refreshed for days.
1. Buy summer shoes a half-size or a full-size
larger than you normally would.
It’s not the most pleasant of facts, but our feet swell
during the summer. That’s why it’s key—when
shopping for new shoes this time of year—to buy
shoes a bit larger than you would in the winter.
Natural materials like leather, canvas, and suede will
definitely stretch, so going up half a size should be
fine. Choose cool, crisp fabrics like cotton or linen,
rather than poly-blends.
2. Mind your fabrics.
We love fast fashion as much as the next shopper,
but a great deal of merchandise from high-street
stores are made from poly-blends that simply aren’t
breathable, and will often hold on to sweat stains. To
stay cool on steamy days, it’s best to seek out materials
like cotton— but any variety will do—as the fibers
are hollow in the center, allowing them to absorb
perspiration and release it quickly.
Linen also is a solid summer material—it’s stronger
than cotton and a better conductor of heat, making
it the most breathable fabric out there. Contrary to
popular belief, silk is a good choice for summer as
well, since it’s natural, breathable, and cooling. The
only downside: It has to be cleaned frequently if you
sweat.
mirror 196

COVER FEATURE
3. Reinvent your clothes.
A tailor can cheaply transform garments, making
them look totally different. A great tailor tip
for those looking to try out the crop top trend
without looking like a slave to fashion: Bring an
old T-shirt and tank top you don’t wear anymore
to your tailor and have he or she hem it to show
a sliver of skin. Then pair it with super highwaist
pants, skirts or shorts. The result: an easybreezy
crop that’s not too tight, too trendy, or
too revealing—and can be worn comfortably all
summer!
Here’s not the end! Now go through the following
• Stick to waterproof makeup.
Leave the streaky makeup alone -- it’s time to
invest in some waterproof mascaras, eyeliners
and even concealers.
• Or up in the air.
Using a scarf, or a fancy hair tie -- keep that
refreshing updo on lock.
• Use products that are created to cool you
down.
Conditioners like which will give your scalp
a menthol blast, or other branded concealer
and beauty expert’s Lip treatment, which use
ingredients like palladium/platinum that are cool
to the touch when applied.
• Skip the fragrance.
Your sunscreen or coconut oil moisturizer will
probably mask any smell.
• Switch to liquid lipsticks.
Instead of getting creamy lipsticks smeared on
your face, try a long-lasting liquid lipstick for a
lightweight, yet seamless finish.
• Get into co-washing -- or just conditioning
your hair in general.
For curly hair, you need to be on your conditioner
game -- whether you are co-washing or using
leave-in.
Get ready to beat the heat with the most
trendy and lightweight attires!
LOOSE-FITTING PANTS
Harem, dhoti, slouchy: No matter
what you call them, loose-fitting
pants are the pair to have for the
warm months ahead. Dress them up
with heels or flats and a jean jacket
tank or a soft jacket.
THE PRINTED DRESS
Be it a beautiful bouquet of floral
or a digitized ikat, a pattern is this
summer’s top option for rocking a
feminine frock.
A HIGH-FASHION WATCH
A bright-blue bezel is a sporty spin
on a classic diving watch. This sort of
timepiece boasts not only a high-tech
appeal, but high fashion as well.
CLOGS
Step into summer with clogs. The
sturdy wood-heeled accessory is all
the rage for sandals this season.
CORAL POLISH
Come summer, everyone wants
their toes and hands to shine. Spice
up your nails with orange-infused
polish. This striking shade will keep
you look dashing.
STRIPES
Fall in line with all things nautical
for the season ahead. A good way to
navigate this trend is by starting with
a striped shirt. No matter what color
or cut you prefer, it will always be in
fashion.
Capri chic for summer fashion:
The hot favourite this season is Capri
pants. Capri pants are perfect and excellent
clothing for warm-weather chic. Capri
pants are found in a number of styles like
tight-fitting pants, cut off pants that may
fall in length anywhere from right above
the knee to mid-calf to just above the
ankle. Capri’s can be worn with almost
any summer outing. Fabric’s range from
linen to denim to silk, and, like jeans, may
be decorated with embroidery. Capri pants
can be worn to an upscale event as well as
fit in at an ultra-casual outing.
Summer Fashion accessories:
The last step is to accessorize you.
To make sure you and your attire
are summer chic, you have to take a
mirror 34
little time out and go through your
wardrobe. Summer handbags also can
enhance your overall look. There are
numerous small bags that work for
those times when you only need a few
items at hand. When you attend an allday
outing, there is a variety of great
jute and canvas bags with beautiful
embroidery available that looks great
and is fit for the occasion.•

BEAUTY CARE
WAY OUT OF WRINKLES
What if you wake up in the morning and notice
wrinkles on your face? It is really alarming,
right? And it is more upsetting if you are a bit
younger to face this sort of marks. Applying
tons of cream to stretch your skin is hypothetical to be one of
the most probable efforts. It would not be surprising if you run
to the departmental stores, but I think reading this article will
not make you a looser either.
Doesn’t matter what your age is, anti aging treatments and
techniques are sure to attract you or extract some moments
from you. When it comes to become old we often feel that we
will not grow old so awkwardly.
mirror 42

BEAUTY CARE
But think about the time you had
spend in the sun without sunscreen
when you were young, returning
from the late night parties and
sleeping without proper cleansing,
tormenting about economic scrape
along with the assessment and
problems. Don’t you think that they
have cause mess on your skin?
This shows us the way to apply antiaging
goods in the hopes of fighting
Nature. Perhaps everyone would
confirm that wrinkles are not good
to view. Many men or women, take
early precaution not to experience
these things. Our body follows
the theory of wearing and tearing,
which is why it is better to prevent
such unwanted things.
Over the years, you have used up
many days laughing with zest; all of
this laughter has supplemented time
on your face. Anti Aging Wrinkle
Creams can help relieve the aging
course through an inventive method
of line filling.
Anti aging wrinkles creams are all
over the shops giving you a hope
of remaining younger and leaving
an improved facial look. Many
recommend a significant, lasting
change within a couple of weeks.
The skin is the largest area in the
body and the first thing to see
when looked at. As we grow the
skin also show it. The selection and
habits we make in our early life will
imitate later. In order to avoid the
wrinkles, anti aging supplements
can help alleviate the luggage of the
atmosphere on skin.
To stop the hands of time working
on your skin, Dead Sea salts have
the anti aging assets and are thought
to be almost heavenly. They have
been experienced with an array of
skin connected situation, showing
positive fallout in each trial. And so a
variety of Dead Sea salt products are
there for our use today. All you need
is to ask the salesman.
Anti-aging is all about providing the
body with healthy selection. Exercise
can show better results for the body
and so better for anti aging than
many bottled product.
The signs of aging include not only
wrinkles, but also memory loss,
reduced brain utility, and a rising
threat for continual illness such as
heart disease and cancer. Healthy
aging is also distinct as breathing
a longer life. Accepting a healthy
lifestyle that includes regular
physical activity, sufficient rest and
a diet full of well foods can be the
best protection against aging. Slow
your aging by selecting foods that
are anti-inflammatory and rich in
antioxidants.
Yet, diet is surely not the only issue
that influences the aging method.
Strain, hormones, sunlight, and
feeble resistant organism also donate
to aging.
Making an elegant standard of living
are within your power, and are
among the best things you can do
to help avoid illness and hold back
aging.
Skin care is an ever-changing
commerce. Finding the most
excellent products for an anti aging
healing shouldn’t be a rigid thing
to do. Many renowned products
may turn out to be this year’s doze
off. Every now and then brand
new goods hit the slopes which are
capable to tone, constrict, and soften
better than anything before. But we
need to keep in mind that we must
choose products that suit our skin.
Don’t run with the gossip, rather
suit yourself with your product, it
doesn’t really work out with the
same trend with everyone.•
HAIR & CARE
BEAUTY
SECRETS
FOR
BEAUTIFUL
HAIR
The most beautiful part of a
woman is undoubtfully her
bunch of hair. Someone
with fair complexion and
pretty face won’t be welcome if her
head is a bold one. Even I remember
the days when I was young and
parents used to bold my head in a
hope of better hair. Today I know
that was one of the dumbest ideas
for healthy hair. And how awful I
looked!!!!!!!!!!! And even today the
mothers look for a girl with long
hair as their daughter- in- law. I
don’t know what the hair speaks,
but it really speaks something I
guess. Don’t you think the hair with
so much of super power needs to be
taken care of? I think so and that’s
why I suggest that we should take a
little trouble to maintain our hair.
Keep your hair color with its
natural look. Try not to color your
hair unless it is too necessary. Hair
colors are not usually that good as a
product. Instead try HENNA as your
hair partner.
Applying hair oil should only
be an hour or two before your
shampoo. Don’t make a habit of
oil. It helps your hair hold down
the dirt. Massage your hair with
oil before cleaning with shampoo
to keep your hair soft and smooth.
You know that add…ONE HOUR
CHOMPEE KIYA.
mirror 48
Use a good shampoo and especially that suits
your hair. Don’t go with a brand because it is
costly; rather find out something that pacify your
hair. If you are going to a party make sure you
shampoo your mane. I am sure you have come
through the fact that it will give you a fresh
look.
Don’t forget the conditioner, it helps your
hair remain smooth and works positively against
the tangles. Otherwise, if you have too much of
tangles, then try to unlock them by your finger
first. Then divide your hair into small bunches to
work out easily with your rough tangles.
If you really want to color your hair, choose
a shade that compliments you and your look.
Don’t use the color that your friend have chosen
or suggested. Your complexion may not suit
with that tone.
Once it comes to your hairstyle, do it according
to the shape of your face and body. If you are
having a healthy structure, don’t tie your hair too
tightly. You may look too fat in that style. You
may look better if you untie your hair.
Try to air dry your hair than to use the dryer.
Common sense says that the dryer is not good for
your healthy hair. Use it only when you are in a
hurry. Or else save the hair and the electricity!!

HAIR & CARE
Play with texture in a normal way by not twisting or
leveling any individual part. Don’t fry your hair into
a helmet when you go to a parlor very frequently.
Always make amity with an affluent conditioner
and styling goods that insert polish and moisture to
your hair.
Don’t be upset if you have a curly hair when silky
is your desire, or vice versa. Find nice hair styles
according to your face and appearance. Still don’t
go for electronic machines. I don’t think that is a
good idea.
Don’t try parlor at home. Hair takes time to grow,
if you try to cut your hair at home and unfortunately
they turn out to be wrong, then you need months
to overcome that blunder. I witnessed many such
accidents of my close ones. So better at this case
don’t look at the money and do it in the parlor.
Try some natural elements for your hair care. I saw
my grandma using MUSUR DAL, AMLA, YOGURT
Princess
& Precious
Platinum
Jewellery
By Indian Correspondent
When anyone desired for
platinum, instantly he/
she mentally turns to be a
princess or prince of royal family. It is
versatile in nature gorgeous, dignified
and topmost fashionable to wear, called
Platinum jewellery. There is no other
jewellery metal more precious, more
lasting, and more appealing then Platinum.
Its rich white luster and understated elegance
are beyond compare. In today’s style and
fashion world, Platinum is the metal of choice
for today’s discriminating jewellery buyer.
Platinum jewellery is as versatile as it is
beautiful. Weather inspired by classic or
contemporary themes,
JEWELLERY
Platinum jewellery is perfect
for any occasion under the sun,
moon or stars. A silent luxury
is today’s world. Of course
treasures to be work like royal
family members! The choice is
yours; platinum with carat gold
accents for breathtaking new
versatility or, for the purist, the
subtle look of all platinum.
This precious jewellery
has long been viewed as an
expensive metal used to make
quality jewellery. It is more
rare than expensive. Unalloyed
Platinum, however,
is soft and has a high melting
point, making it difficult to
use to create jewellery, rather
ornament. With the addition
of creation alloys, Platinum
becomes one of the hardest
metals available. With the
alloys, Platinum is more durable
than gold or silver, which
makes it ideal for jewellery
with diamonds and other gems,
because it provides the most
secure setting. The traditional
alloys used with Platinum have
been from the Platinum group
metals, including Iridium,
Ruthenium and Palladium. Its
price is normally slightly less
than twice that of gold. ”In the
18th century, Platinum’s rarity
made king Louis XV of France
declare it the only metal fit for
king”.
South Africa is the top
producer of Platinum with
almost 80% world share
followed by Russia, Canada
and Botswana. Most Platinum
jewellery is marked 950 or PLAT
indicating the jewellery is 95%
pure. But, Platinum jewellery
may also be marked 850 Plat or
850Pt. and 900 Plat or 900Pt.
indicating 85 or 905 Platinum
content respectively. Valued
its purity, rarity and strength,
Platinum is considered the
most precious of all jewellery
metals. It’s beautiful colour and
elegant appearance make it an
ideal choice for brides and all
jewellery lovers.
Compared to gold, Platinum
is 5 times as rare and much
more pure when used in
jewellery. Although they
appear similar, Platinum
should never be mistaken for
white gold. The two metals
differ not only in strength,
also in colour. While gold
is originally produced from
yellow gold, while platinum is
already white. Therefore, the
colour of Platinum is actually
whiter than white gold. This
hypoallergenic metal is also
heavier than most metals and
commonly used as a secure
diamond setting.
The world’s famous
diamonds, including the Hope,
Jonker I and Koh-I-Noor, are
secured by the permanence
of Platinum. Today, Platinum
again charms and enchants a
new generation of consumers,
St. Valentine’s Mantra
Best Friend- Ideal Couple
mirror 60
By Indian Correspondent
Being in Love is easy; to give it a permanent shape
difficult. It is emotion that has transcended the
millennia. The issue in question is an emotion
that leads to the best marriage and ever relationship.
But being in love is not enough. Experience reveals that
no relationship has ever passed the test of time without
also being a friendship. Couples in long time successful
marriages always view that their spouse are their best
friend. They trust each other with their lives, their entire
well-being of their honour and strong bondage.
‘He is like my best friend’….. ‘She is the best friend
in my life’- these are common statements and belief
about a relationship with our spouse. That they must
be our friend, no, best friend – as well as all the other
roles a spouse plays in marriage. This is widely counted
that there should be friendship between husband and
wife, having him or her as best friends will be the death
– nail to the marriage. Best friends indicate as a primary
and/or sole outlet of relationship needs.

RELATIONSHIP
Of course you ‘Love’ your
friends! They are funny, jolly,
smart and they get you, right?
So what happens, when you
suddenly realize you might
‘Love’,- ‘Love’ one of them?
Some of the best relationships
start as friendships, so if
you think there is more, it
might be a delightful days
ahead turning into marriagerelationship.
So, you have fallen in love
with your best friend, and
you know for a fact that your
best friend loves you too with
equal sincerely thereof. Well
with a delicate and emotional
situation like this, you need
much help as you can get to
make the decision and process
of transition from friends to
couple run smoothly. Age
does not matter, so you could
be 15 or 85.
The relationship with your
‘bestie’ is as much about
business as it is about mutual
love and respect. It is about
achieving your goals through
a network of support and
encouragement. Being that
you always have her best
interest at heart and she always
has yours, it is understandable
that you would only want to
help each other reach your
highest levels of excellence.
Even both of you want to help
each other to reach the almost
all the levels of excellence as
a team.
Between the two of you,
your skill set is unmatched
and unstoppable. Together,
you are a dream couple of
epic proportions waiting to
take the world by storm and
overflow it with your epic
fabulousness. A new study
found that people who are
married to their best friend or
consider their partners their
best feel happier and more
satisfied with their lives,
especially through stressful
times.
According to latest opinion
poll the happiest couple
means when one married his
or her best friend and equally
benefited. According to a
study: those who consider
their spouse to be their best
friend get about twice as
much life satisfaction from
marriage as others.•
Love
Shah Jahan & Mumtaz Mahal
By Indian Correspondent
In line with the philosophy of the
great preacher St. Valentine, what
greater love story could there be,
than a love story that inspired one
of the most magnificent structures
in the World? That which began as a
betrothal, blossomed into an intensely
intimate bond- which despite ending
in tragedy, will live on forever through
the awe-inspiring Taj Mahal.
One could only imagine the life, this
widely romantic couple would have
experienced- mid night strolls on the
shore Taj lake, Meena Bazaar. On this
day, the gates of the private market
attached to the Harem of Emperor
Jahangir, were thrown open to Royalty
and high-rocking commoners alike.
It was at once of the stalls that Prince
Khurram, later Shah Jahan, espied
the lovely and attractive Anjumand
Begam (later Mumtaz Mahal) as was
completely enraptured by her charms.
When the Royal wedding took place
after five years, Prince Khurram
resplendently attired in rich gold and
brocade.
The prince continued to court his
young bride ardently ever after they
were married, bringing her lavish
gifts of diamonds and gorgeous roses
from the most gardens in the country,
Mumtaz Mahal in turn, stood staunchly
by her husband’s side through all the
vicissitudes of life and rose to be his
trusted political adviser and counsel.
Before she breathed her last, Mumtaz
Mahal made Shah Jahan promise to
erect a peerless monument to amortize
their love. Shah Jahan also vowed to
her that he would never remarry, as
would build the monument ,her last
LOVE STORY
It took 22 years for heartbroken
Shah Jahan to construct the Taj Mahal
to fulfil the promises dream. The Taj
Mahal is flanked by two immensely
beautiful mosques on either side. Since
the lovely Mumtaz Mahal died in child
birth, The Taj Mahal is today an Urs
or place of pilgrimage. In the warm,
vibrant colours of mid summer’s night
picnic in the moonlight garden of the
palace-perhaps even an elephant ride
for two through the streets of Agra or
along the banks of the river Yamuna.
Shah Jahan loved and trusted Mumtaz
Mahal so completely; that he even
presented her with greatest honour
possible- his imperial seal, the ‘Mohr
Uzah’.
Taj Mahal stands for “the epitome of
Love”. The beauty of this monument
is such that it is beyond the scope
of words. The thoughts that come
into the mind while watching the
Taj Mahal (jewel of palace) of Agra
in India is not just its phenomenal
beauty, but the immense love which
was the reason behind its construction.
Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan got this
monument constructed in the memory
of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal,
with whom he fall in love at the first
sight. The very first sight of the Taj
Mahal, the lively symbol of love and
romance leaves one mesmerized. The
Taj Mahal stood silence, an eloquent of
eternal love, etched against the perfect
evening sky.
As crimson rays tinged the flawless
façade of the Taj Mahal, a delicate
pink, the people bowed in homage as
they recalled the poignant saga of love
encapsulate in the annals of historyone
of the seven wonders of the world.
It was designed by a Persian architect
named Ustad Isa to fulfil the last wish
of his wife. Let us go back in time to
that fateful day when great Love story
between the Mughal Emperor and his
would-be queen began…
… In the year 1607 A.D at the
Mughal Ruler’s palace in Agra, a
festival was being celebrated at the
Royal nature – colours that would had
never faded, like the everlasting love
of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal.
Immortalising the Taj Mahal as the
epitome signifies the undying love.
Mumtaz Mahal died on 17th June,
1631, while Shah Jahan died on 1st
February, 1666. He was buried beside
Mumtaz in the Taj Mahal which serves
as a pleasant symbol of dedicated love,
conjugal harmony and mutual respect
of two lovers- similar to preaching of
St. Valentine.
The Taj Mahal now is an everlasting
tribute from the emperor to his
beloved wife- but more than that, it is
a shining monument of greatest love
story in the world.
When Mumtaz Mahal died, she
was just 39 years old. Shah Jahan
was inconsolable and contemporary
chronicles tell of the Royal Court
morning for 2 years. There was no
music, no feasting and no celebration
of any kind. The queen before her
death extracted 4 promises (1 already
mentioned), out of which another
condition was that he should visit the
memorial every year on her death
anniversary. He kept the request till
his last breath.
Today, there are few lovers like
shah Jahan and fewer like Mumtaz
Mahal. If the emperor was born
today, he would definitely buy
Mumtaz Mahal a garden of red roses,
a store full of Swiss Chocolates,
personalised jewellery and have
composers from across the world
crease music and write lyrics of love
dedicated to her, gone are the lovemingled
era when love was expressed
by a hesitant look and a simple
glance. Taj- the eternal symbol of
love could never be repeated ever
again.
Valentine’s Day
story of Love
By Indian Correspondent
The story of Valentine’s Day begins in the
third century with an oppressive Roman
emperor and a humble Christian Martyr. The
emperor was named Claudius II, while the
Christians were Valentines.
Claudius II had ordered all Romans to
worship twelve Gods, and had made it a
crime punishable by death to associate with
Christians. But Valentinus (alias Valentine)
was dedicated to the ideals of Christ; not even
threat of death could keep him from practising
his believes. He was arrested and punished life
time imprisonment.
During the last weeks of Valentinus’s life a
remarkable thing happened. Seeing that he was
a man of learning, the jailor asked whether his
daughter Julia, might be brought to Valentines
for lessons. She had been blind since birth.
Julia was a pretty young girl with a quick
mind. Valentine readily agreed and taught the
stories of Roman history to her. He described
the world of nature to her. He taught her
arithmetic and told her about God. She saw the
world through his eyes, trusted his wisdom,
and found comfort in his quite strength.
‘Valentinus, does God really hear our
prayers?’ Julia asked one day. - Yes my child,
he hears each other. ‘Do you know what I pray
for every morning and every night?’ I pray that
I might see. I want so much to see everything
you have told me about!’- God does what
best for us if we will only believe in him. ‘Oh
Valentinus, I do believe. I do!’ she knelt and
grasped his head.
They sat quietly together, each praying.
Suddenly there was a brilliant light in prison
cell. Radiant! Julia screamed,’ Valentinus, I
can see! I can see! Praise to God- Valentinus
exclaimed and he knelt in prayer. On the
eve of his death, Valentinus wrote a last note
to Julia, urging her to stay close to God. He
signed it, ‘From your Valentine’. His sentence
was carried out next day, February 14, 270
A.D near a gate that was later named Porta
Valintini in Rome in his memory. He was
buried at what is now the church of Praxedes
in Rome. It is said that Julia planted a pinkblossomed
almond tree remains a symbol
of abiding love and friendship. On each
February 14, Saint Valentine’s Day, massages
in affection, love and devotion are exchanged
around the world.
EMPIRE LOVE
Regarding mighty, St.
Valentine, there is another
school of thought. He
was a Roman priest at a
time when there was an
emperor called Clandias II
who persecuted the church
at that particular time.
He also had an edict that
prohibited the marriage
of young people. This was
based on the hypothesis
that unmarried soldiers
fought better than married
soldiers because married
soldiers might be afraid
of what might happen to
them or their wives or
families if they died.
But obviously the church
thought that marriage was
very sacred between one
man and one woman for
their life and that it was to
be encouraged. And so it
immediately presented the
problem to the Christian
church of what to do
about this. The idea of
encouraging them to
marry was what valentine
was about. And he secretly
married them because
of the edict. Valentine
was eventually caught,
imprisoned and further
for performing marriage
ceremonies against
command of Emperor
Claudius the second. There
are legends surrounding
Valentine’s actions while
in prison. One of the man
who was to judge him in
line with the Roman law
at the time was man called
Asterius, a non-Christian,
whose daughter was a
blind. He was supposed
to have prayed with and
heeled the young girl with
such astonishing effect that
Asterius himself became
a Christian. As a result
and in the year 269 A.D.,
valentine was sentenced to
a 3-part fortune and died.
The story goes that the last
words he wrote in a note
to Aesterious’s daughter-
‘from your Valentine’.
“Valentine has come to
be known as the patron
saint of lovers. Before you
enter into a marriage you
want some sense of God in
your life”.
Love – human love and
sexuality is wonderful, and
blessed by god- but also
the shadow of the cross.
That is what Valentine
meant as his missionary
philosophy of life.
Let us take a trip back
to the tavern in Rome in
270 A.D. It is around the
ides of February, and most
of the city is engaged in
Lupercalia, a so-called
cleansing time for the
pagans all about us. One
Bishop, Valentine, refused
to stop marriages. He
counselled couples that
from beginning God made
them men and women.
He practised what he
preached- marrying many
couples. That irritated the
emperor, who had him
arrested and brought to
him and put him in jail.
So, in the end, Valentine
was killed for supporting
marriage by the emperor
who believed valentine but
thought that had he not
killed Valentine, people
would think he was weak
(sound liken Pilate).
Saint Valentine has
communicated the World
people that Jesus has told
us the first commandment:
‘If you love the Lord your
God will be in your heart,
your soul and with all your
mind and with all your
strength’. According to
his sermon-“ in order to
live out gods high calling,
it always helps to be in
relationship with another
person. As long as there is
the two of us, we have got
the world all its charms.
And when the world is
through with us, we will
have each other’s arms.
You have got to give a
little. Take a little, and let
your poor heart break a
little. That is the story of
Valentine’s Day, which is
the glory of love •
SKIN CARE
IN SUMMER
By Indian Correspondent
Summer is the time when you lighten the
weight of your wares, become too fussy about
the food, count your steps outside the home.
It may be the season of travelling out, have a change
in the beaches, collect the shells from the beach, but
it is also the time you start being concerned about
your skin and the exterior of your body. A little
trouble taken by you will surely keep the heat fear
away. The weather outside may be violent, but that
shouldn’t return on your coating. As the summer
sets in, the weather revolves warm and intolerable.
That is why your skin needs extra help to guard
from the atmosphere.
For many, the days of summer end to a terrified
experience. They also bring rough oiliness and
pimples to the skin of the face, moist on the hands
and cracks on the feet. Forgetting all these problems
in the initial stages of the season, conclude us to an
intense failure of the skin.
Sometimes, the climate may change very fast
from winter to summer skipping the spring. Now
a day you don’t witness the spring unless you look
at the calendar. So it is somehow obligatory to be
prepared for that. Otherwise the skin on different
parts of your body such as your hands, face or lips
may react. As the temperatures change, a change in
your skin care routine is also unavoidable. Here are
just some tracks to help you out during the summer
so that you may make it a successful one.
SKIN CARE
Our skin softness
depends not only on
external managements,
but also on the standard
appropriate diet. An
accurate nourishing food
pattern helps in stimulating
the skin from the interior.
Water plays an imperative
role in keeping our skin
flourishing. As we all
know that during summer
the sun extracts water from
our body through sweat,
so we should intake lot of
liquid to balance the water
of our body and keep our
skin protected. Fruits and
vegetables in our every
day diet liberate a lot of
water to our organism.
Talcum powder should
be a part of our daily
makeup. Whenever we
wash our face or go out,
we may use a bit of a
branded powder. It will
help dry the oil of our
face and release a nice
fragrant. Use any brand
that is convenient for you
and suits you well.
Night creams also work
in a comprehensive way,
but you need to check out
and figure out your own
brand.
Complement your
shower with sweet-scented
soap or body wash. Try
to keep a fresh look on
your face after bath.
Many take frequent bath
in the summer; I won’t
encourage or discourage
your frequency, just see
that you don’t fall sick.
Many have a nice skin but
a terrible foot. Remember
the torture goes on your
feet every day. You
should treat your feet in
a pampered way to keep
them fit. While treating
your legs add a few drops
of oil in the water. Try to
use creams that contain
petroleum jelly. Glycerin
is most excellent for
your feet. Though it will
make your feet hot, yet
try at least once a day.
You can also wash it after
few minutes in the initial
stages to get used to it.
The skin on your hands
is thinner than the largest
part of the body. So it’s
tougher to keep your hands
soft and smooth. Wearing
gloves while working in
the kitchen may help you
on this issue.
Temper and pamper
your lips throughout the
season. Choose a good
petroleum jelly or lip gel
to cover your lips when
you are at home. Soften
the lips every night with
glycerin. It has a tonic
effect on the lips.
To end I would advise
taking a light rainfall daily,
as, it is also important for
the sanitation of your skin.
After rinsing your hands,
seal them with a towel
immediately and gently
pat dry. You should do the
same to your body after a
bath. Get the Ayurbedic
habits such as Aloe Vera,
Kalijira, or Green Tea in
the empty stomach to
keep your immune system
work well. Get sufficient
sleep to help your body
play up your assets, play down your liabilities
TAKE a good look at yourself in
the mirror. What are your best
features? Is it your doe eyes? Your
cheekbones? What are your not-so-good
features Your heavy jawbone? Too thin
lips?
Putting on your best face is a cinch.
Just get out your make-up kit and.line
up your kohl liner, eyeshadow, blusher,
lipsticks, concealer and highlighter.
The only stipulation is that you blend
well, so no weird lines or marks show
up on your face.
THE NOBLE BROW
Narrow forehead: A touch of blush on
the temples can make the forehead more
prominent and warm the eyes.
Blush around the hairline adds a warm
halo to the face but do blend well.
Face Fact: The long face: A dot of
blusher on the chin will help shorten a
face. When it comes to the cheekbones,
place blush in a horizontal bar directly
across the top of the cheekbones. Blend.
The diamond-shaped face: Place
blusher in a small circle on top of the
cheekbones and blend to the outside of
the face.
Round face: Blusher should be applied
in small triangles with the apex towards
the eyes.
Square face: The triangles of the blusher
should have the apex towards nose and
should be blended all the way to the
outside of the face.
mirror 96

BEAUTY
EYES WIDE OPEN
Widen your eyes: Eyes that have too
much lid showing need to be coloured
with shadow (or kohl, if you want to go
dramatic) across the entire lid, right up
to the crease below the browbone. Take
a smudgy kohl pencil and blend a line
halfway across the lower lash line, too.
Give close-set eyes some space: Colour
half the upper lid in a triangular shape,
with the apex of the triangle at the outer
corner. Draw a line halfway across the
lower lash line and blend well.
Lessen the bulge: If your eyes tend to
bulge, colour the upper lid all the way up
to the crease. Line bottom lash line with a
dark kohl.
Define deep-set eyes: Apply light frosted
colour from the lash line all the way to the
brow but keep it within the bone structure
of the eye socket.Dark circles: Dot a
concealer halfway down from the inner
eye area, which is the darkest part. Blend
well and set with a very light dusting of
pressed powder.
Sleepy eyes: Wake up sleepy orbs with
navy kohl and mascara.
LOVE THOSE LIPS
Balance your lips: For too-full lips, outline the Cupid’s bow of the top
lip, then fill in the centre of both lips with a darker lip pencil. Blend,
then apply your normal shade of lipstick. Always match the tip of the
Cupid’s bow of the mouth with the nostrils — this brings the nose and
mouth into harmony.
Give uneven lips shape: Use a brighter colour on the smaller lip for
a fuller appearance. If your upper lip is narrow, paint a line with a lip
pencil just over the top lip edge, then use two lippers; a dark shade for
the upper lip and a lighter one for the lower lip.
A too-wide mouth: Don’t take lip colour all the way to the corners of
the mouth.
THE SCULPTED JAW
To slim a heavy jawline, apply
shader in a wedge just above the
edge of your jawline, then blend.
edge of your jawline, then blend.
A receding chin can be corrected
visually by dabbing blush or shader
on the centre of the chin and
blending. Remember to play down
eye make-up; strong eyes generally
throw a weak chin into relief.
THE AQUILINE NOSE
To slim the shape of your nose, dot a small
triangle of shader above the nostrils, with
the apex away from the bridge of the nose.
Blend carefully. Add the final touch with a
slim line of highlighter or shimmer down
the bridge of the nose.
To ‘shorten’ a long nose, put just a dab of
shader under the tip of the nose and blend.
Highlight the bridge.
Give yourself cheekbones. Draw elongated
triangles just below the cheekbones, with
the apex pointing towards your jaw. Blend.
Now highlight the top of the cheekbones.
Blush should always be kept towards the
outside of the face, never coming closer to
the middle of the face than just below the
middle of the eye.
The cheek can be hollowed by shading the
outside plane of the jawline. Colour should
come no closer to the middle of the face
than the outside corner of the eye.
A NAIL BITING FINISH
GET YOURSELF STRONG AND SPARKLING NAILS WITH
THESE EASY, TANTALISING NAIL CARE TIPS
YES, these are high-speed, high-stress times, and almost every day feels like a Monday. But if, for a change,
you’ve got time on your hands, take a look at them. How do they feel? Pampered or pitiful? What about
your feet? Are they cared-for or corn-ridden? And argh! Do your ugly, unsightly nails drive the last nail
into any beauty’s coffin?
Rejoice. For the day is not far when you’ll have just what you need — a dedicated nail station right around the
corner. A place where your nails will be in expert hands, not for a routine manicure or pedicure, but a complete,
extended pampering session. And before you know it, nail care will become just as routine as a facial or a tweeze.
BEAUTIFY CARE
NAIL CARE NOTES
• Moisturise nails daily. Plain vaseline will do, though
alpha hydroxyl acid-based treatments are much more
effective.
• Keep nails polished; it keeps them from drying out.
• Never cut cuticles as nails grow from the matrix,
which is protected from dirt and -bacteria by the
cuticle. Exfoliate cuticles with grainy scrub instead of
cutting them.
• Keep nail strengthener on the desk or by the TV, and
apply one coat daily. Remove weekly.
• Soak fingers in olive oil once a week, for 10 minutes,
for silken nails.
• Busy fingers make nails grow faster. Play the piano,
type, or knit.
• To smoothen brittle nails, mix five tablespoons of
milk in one-and-a-half cups of hot water. Soak hands
in this solution for 10 minutes. The lactic acid in milk
helps exfoliate dead cells.
• Housework, soap, water and excessive use of
detergents can split and peel nails because of their
strong de-greasing effect. Wear rubber gloves or use a
hand cream every time you wash. Keeps nails clean and
hands supple.
• Use a pencil to dial telephone numbers.
• Nail varnish solvents in removers can cause brittleness
and breaking; so try not to use a nail varnish remover
more than once a week.
MANICURE KIT MUST-
HAVES
Nail files: Get a medium grade emery board for shortening
nails and a fine grade one for the finishing touch. Replace
your nail files regularly.
Nail buffer: These usually come in three combined
buffing surfaces. Some products can give a wonderful
shine, while others might damage your nails. It’s a good
idea to consult your manicurist if you are unsure of
product quality.
Cuticle softeners: You’ll need these to loosen stubborn
skin that is stuck to the nail bed. IV me products come
as easy-to-use thick creams which you massage into the
cuticle.
POLISH REMOVERS: Look for acetonefree
polish removers as they are gentler on the nails. Some
removers contain vitamin E and are even aromatic. In
TANTALISING TIPS IN 12
EASY STEPS
1. Using an acetone-free nail polish remover, take off any
old polish. Hold a cotton ball soaked with remover on each
nail for 10 seconds and then wipe This helps loosen the
polish.
2. Trim and file your nails to the desired shape and length.
Try to file in one direction only, it helps prevent splitting.
3. Soak hands in some warm sudsy water for a few minutes
to soften the cuticles. Adding some nice aromatherapy oils
or using a scented soap makes the experience even better! If
you’re giving yourself a pedicure, try an exfoliating scrub to
get rid of any callouses.
4. Clean the nails with a nail brush to remove any dirt.
5. Put on some good cuticle softener/remover and sit for a
few minutes. (Follow the directions on your cuticle product
of choice.)
6. Use the tip of an orange stick (available in most drug
stores and beauty supply stores) covered in cotton to
gently push back the cuticles. If it hurts, you’re doing it
wrong! Remember, you aren’t supposed to be cutting your
cuticles.
7. Now massage some moisturiser into your hands and
let it soak in. This would be a good time for some cuticle
oil as well.
8. Before you begin to polish, you need to wash your
hands or the polish won’t adhere properly.
9. Apply a base coat and let dry.
10. Now apply two thin coats of polish. Let each dry for
at least four minutes.
11. You’re done! Remember to allow ample drying time
or you’ll end up messing up your hard work and having to
start all over again. Once the polish is dry, it’s time to try
some nail art.
12. Glitter do-it-yourself: Take some really fine glitter.
Paint a design on your nail using top coat or polish and,
while it’s still wet, dust the nail with glitter. The glitter will
stick only to the wet areas. You can use a toothpick to paint
really fine lines. Once the glitter has dried in place, seal it
Valentines Day
Impact of Indian and Western
Culture on Bangladeshi
‘Valentine’s Day’
By Raihana Sayeeda Kamal
Even ten years back,
Bangladeshi people did not
use to celebrate Valentine’s
Day. Even if they had
celebrated, they only used
to exchange bouquet and
hang out around ladies wearing red
scree and gentlemen wearing red or
white Panjabi or casual dress.
However, with time things change.
Similarly, the way of celebrating
Valentine’s Day also changed. With the
technological advancement; through
the internet and the media, people are
getting access to other cultures. Hence,
the Western culture is influencing Indian
culture and consequently. Indian culture
falls impact on Bangladeshi culture. As
we are the die heart follower of Indian
tradition from the very beginning.
Surprisingly, these days Valentine’s
Day is followed by some other days like
Chocolate Day, Propose Day, Teddy Day,
Hug Day and Kiss Day. Young couples
in order to bring a smile on his or her
beloved’s face, do everything possible
spending as much as they can afford.
A stick of rose is not enough these day,
they expect gifts, surprise candle light
dinner and romantic outing nowadays
as it has become a part of our culture.
And this gives the opportunity to the
jewelry shop, gift shop and restaurants
to make a great business on that day.
This year, a new trend has come from
China and that is flying lantern in the
sky wishing to keep happy together
throughout the whole life. Not only that,
the dress code is also changing. Scree is
being replaced by floor touch gown. In
a small scale survey (five people), it is
found that among the five ladies, three
of them expect gifts and surprise date
from their beloved and if the partner
fails to satisfy, the other partner gets
upset. Thus, this upset leads to many
problem even break-up sometimes. Love
is not about gifts or surprises, it is about
emotional attachment, understanding,
compatibility and bonding. The couples
who belong to this generation are
forgetting the value of true love. They
have started living in the fantasy world
of Movies and TV serials. •
PROMOTION
that gives complete home solution
By: AHM Mustafizur Rahman
“home n décor” is the grandest and first
of its all in one home store in Bangladesh.
Built on a massive 65,000 square feet, it
has set out to be the one stop solution
to all home furnishing needs. Since its
inception in September 2014, this three
level megastore proudly claims to have
‘anything and everything for your home’
and from the looks of it, it may well be
living up to its promise.
The management has thought of
everything when conceptualizing this
store. Step through the wide inviting
entrance and the first level greets you
with every kind of home goods you
can conceive, from home accessories,
kitchenware, dinnerware, interior
décor products, and home appliances
and much more. From the simplest
kitchen mitts to microwave ovens,
from collections of wooden spatula
to designer quality glassware, from
frying pans to luxurious rugs and
carpets, they really have left no
stone unturned to ensure that the
customers really can find anything
and everything they require. It
makes one wonder whether some
member of the management faced
the hassles of setting up a new home
themselves.
Besides the astonishing range of
home accessories, a wide range of
select furniture is also available at
home n décor. The entire second level
is reserved exclusively for the store’s
handpicked imported furniture aptly
titled ‘Cloud9’. Crafted for opulent
living, this exquisite collection of
furniture is sure to be a favorite
among customers who aren’t afraid
to splash a little cash for quality.
Level 3 hosts a wide variety of local
furniture, including home n décor’s
very own ‘Innov8’ and ‘Select’
furniture along with numerous local
brands such as Hatil, Green Furniture
and Pranatun.
PROMOTION
However, this is just the
beginning and there are clearly
grander plans for the home
store. The month of February
saw a photography exhibition
titled “The Colours of Life”
drawing eager enthusiasts
from all over the city. The
management is looking to
host further photography and
art exhibitions, specifically
ones consisting of budding
photographers and artists
in an attempt to showcase
their creativity. When the
management was asked about
the reasons, a representative
stated, “Nowadays, people
are very interested in having
paintings and photographs in
their homes. It gives young
artists the perfect platform to
express their talent to a wide
and exclusive selection of
people who can both appreciate
and purchase their work”
home n décor’s vision to
remove the hassle in the
pursuit of the perfect home
is to be lauded, and so is its
attempt to give budding artists
a platform to showcase their
work. It is a store Bangladesh
can be proud of having, and a
store Bangladeshis should be
delighted with. •
5 The BEST
Home Design Trends
For 2015
If you’re looking to decorate your home
with some Ikea basics — stop right
now.
Matching furniture and solid paints
wall colors are apparently “soon-tobe
forgotten” interior decorating fads,
according to the interior design experts
at Zillow Digs.
And you wouldn’t want your house to
look completely untrendy, now would
you?
But good news! The experts at Zillow
Digs have also kindly announced the
five new interior decorating trends that
will take 2015 by storm.
“Unexpected textures and an eclectic,
modern vibe are about to find their way in
2015. Expect to see a more sophisticated
look in 2015 that incorporates gold
hardware, natural textures, and a subtle
mid-century modern undertone,” writes
Kerrie Kelly, a Zillow Digs design expert.
mirror 112

HOME DECOR
1. Gold Fixtures
“In 2015, homeowners will no longer be limited to silver or stainless
steel fixtures, and will feel free to mix and match finish colors, or go
bold with all gold,” according to the Zillow Digs report.
So that means you can bling out your house exactly as you’ve always
dreamed of doing in the new year. We think you should start with
the bathroom — no sink is complete without a gold faucet.
And since it’s officially on-trend to mix finishes, you may want to
consider a bronze-and-gold gryphon lamp fixture for your living
room.
2. Cowhide
Without a doubt, there is nothing more “sophisticated” than the
cowhide rug. Your apartment or house certainly won’t be complete
without one.
“Cowhide is the ideal accent texture for 2015’s modern, yet
approachable design aesthetic. Zillow Digs Designers say elements
of cowhide will fight their pay into pillows, rugs, throw blankets,
and even artwork this year,” according to the Zillow Digs report.
Or perhaps you would rather keep the cowhide all to yourself? You
can also get a few cowhide pillows, and even a cowhide throw to
add “the ideal accent texture” that’s also an “approachable design.”
3. Wallpaper
“Wallpaper is coming back in a big way,” says Zillow Digs designer
Jamie Backwith of Beckwith Interiors.
According to the experts at Zillow Digs, consumers should expect
to see an increase in available colors and textures in home stores
because everyone’s dying to spice up their wall game.
So say good-bye to those plain white walls in lieu of some bold
light-blue mixed with yellow:
4. Blue Accent Colors
Blue will be the most popular accent color for interior decorating, and
— believe it or not — it also happens to be the perfect complement
to Marsala, the 2015 Pantone Color of the Year, according to the
Zillow Digs designers.
“Pops of indigo blue or deep navy will become a stable in home
design this year, as their deep natural hues become extra vibrant
against warm earth tones like Marsala,” according to Zillow Digs
home design expert, Kerrie Kelly.
If you’re not sure how you feel about the navy-accent trend, a pillow
like this is a great way to dip your toes in.
5. Modern/Mid-century Modern elements.
Last but not least, a throwback to modern design elements of the
1950s through the 1970s. So that couch you saw on that 1970s
family-style sitcom is officially trendy today.
However, “while this trend will be popular, Zillow Digs experts
advise homeowners to be careful when integrating into homes,
as the trend is great for inspiration, but shouldn’t take over the
house.”
So throw out that out-of-date matching furniture, and get
ride of your solid painted wall colors. It’s time to bring one
of these sophisticated, completely on-trend design staples to
your home in the new year.
Happy decorating.
5 Common Acne Myths
You Should Stop
Believing NOW
By Mahrin Samdani
No matter your age or gender,
one thing is for sure: No one
wants to deal with acne. The
frustrating skin problem is unsightly,
embarrassing and a pain to deal with. It
seems like we’re always on the hunt for
the best acne obliterating miracle product
or cover-up to hide those imperfections.
After hearing much buzz about skincare
myths, we interviewed one of our reputed
beauty experts and dermatologistrecently,
who debunked a handful of acne-specific
myths we totally believed. Check them out
below.
You will eventually outgrow acne — it’s
only a teenage problem. “Acne is worse
for females when they are women, and
usually worse for males when they are
teenagers,” she says. It would be great if
we could outgrow acne like we outgrew
bad hair as a teen, but she says, “90 percent
of all teenagers have acne, but adult acne
is a major problem for both men and
women.”
Washing your face consistently is the
cure to acne. Sometimes we believe that
if we scrub hard enough or often enough,
acne will go away, but unfortunately, that
is not the case. “Washing one to two times
a day with an anti-acne cleanser is helpful,
mirror 132

SKIN CARE
Acne is caused by clogged pores,
bacteria, hormonal fluctuations and
overgrowth of sebum and washing
more won’t fix those causes.
Wearing sunscreen clog pores.
“If you wear an oil-free sunscreen,
powder sunblock or gel-based, it
should not clog your pores,” she says.
So when you’re out shopping for a
facial sunscreen, make sure it is safe
and good for use on your skin type.
Your diet has nothing to do with
acne. We were surprised to find
out that this one depends on the
individual. She says, “In many
patients this is true, but there are
acne patients where diet plays a role.
For regular acne patients, she always
recommends a healthy diet, and if
a particular patient finds that every
time they eat chocolate they break
out, then the best thing to do is avoid
chocolate.” Healthy eating should
always be a priority, but if you notice
certain foods trigger a breakout,
well then, you may have found the
culprit.
Sun exposure is good for healing
a breakout. This one is a big-time
falsity. She advises, “Sun kills bacteria
and that’s why many people feel their
acne gets better when they go to the
beach. However, the sun will darken
any marks left over from a breakout,
so it is not good to heal a breakout at
all. Sun exposure will cause the marks
Summer Bag
Trends for 2015
1. Structured Bags with Handles: There
are many different names of these bags:
satchels, doctor bags, bowling bags, duffle
bags, or lady like bags. Try imagining a
handbag from the 50s or 60s and you’d be
pretty close to what these bags look like.
Most of the bags were rounded, but not
round. Some were squarer. Others were
square with “wings”.
Some of them were teeny-weeny tiny,
some of them were smallish, and others
were mid-sized. The most versatile ones
had a shoulder strap along with a regular
purse handle. Structured bags almost
always look good with color blocking
(another big trend for summer).
mirror 138

ACCESSORIES
2. Box-Shaped Handbags & Clutches:
Rectangular box-shaped bags, sometimes
called suitcase bags, are hot. The newest
and trendiest ones are quite small and they
would look amazing on most of you.
Some of the bags are sharp-edged boxes
that are either meant to be worn as
shoulderbags (often with chain straps) or
meant to be held as clutches (often with a
hand strap or wrist strap). Other types of
boxy bags are softer and not as trendy.
If you are skinnier, youshould absolutely
try one of the small boxy bags with a chain.
When you see them you’ll think you’ve
been transported back to the Mod Sixties.
This new style of handbag would really
give a nice, polished look to your outfit.
4. Geometric Architectural Bags:
There are all kinds of weird
geometric shapes designed by high
end fashion houses. This type of bag
is a kind of example that is made
for regular people who can’t afford
haute couture... It’s considered as
the mainstream. Some of the fancy
purses have round or square handles.
Some of the bags are soft sided,
some are hard sided, and some are
just uniquely shaped.
5. Bucket Handbags:
Bucket bags usually have an open top
and a drawstring closure. However,
there are all kinds of variations. Some
are metallic. Some have laser cutouts.
Many of them are white.
3. Round Cross body Handbags:
Round purses may be a trend that will
show up later in the year, probably closer
to summer, if they do catch on.
6. Shopper Tote Bags:
Totes are all over the pavements. They
are metallic, normal colors, crazy colors,
and everything in between. Some are
zippered, but most are open. If you like
totes, this is a good year to find the exact
style that will perk up your tired old
wardrobe.
However, if you want to go trendy this
year, two of the main details to consider
are structured (frame) bags with a retro
50s look and/or boxy handbags with
chain shoulder straps, a style that was
big in the Mod 60s. If you’re not that
into trends, just have fun looking around
until you find a handbag you can’t live
without.
SUMMER BEAUTY
Does Summer
Restrain You
from Glowing?
Read the article
Aloud
Summer, like winter, requires its own special
beauty tricks. After all, it is in summer that your
eye shadow becomes a greasy pool in your eyelid
creases, your hair falls flat or frizzes to a crisp and
your hair color looks like mud against your tan.
But have no fear; there are fixes to your summer beauty
problems. To keep you looking good, here are some of the
favorite beauty tips for the hot season.
It’s All About the Skin
Forget your eye makeup and your lips and making them
up perfectly. Any makeup artist will tell you the secret
to flawless beauty is not about the “perfect eye” or the
“perfect lip,” it’s all about even skin tone. This is especially
true in the warm summer months when you naturally want
to wear less makeup.
Get your skin in shape and you’ll find you
need less makeup. Here are some tips:
• If your skin is uneven, blotchy or pimply, see a
dermatologist and figure it out. Don’t try to solve your skin
problems yourself.
• Lasers are wonderful. They can fix red lines and
completely, totally rejuvenate your skin.
• Keep your face protected from the sun. This means an
SPF of at least 40, preferably higher.
The 4 Makeup Items to Embrace
Summer days mean you can get away with less makeup.
For the freshest, most natural looking face, embrace these 4
beauty items:
• Fake eyelashes. There’s nothing quite so alluring as a
natural face devoid of makeup, but with long lashes and lip
gloss. Skip the mascara which can run and try fake lashes.
Either get them done professionally or apply your own
with strips or individual lashes.
• A light, pink lip gloss. Plump up lips with a bit of color
and gloss. The best way to do this is to get tinted gloss.
mirror 142

• Bronzer. Since you’re
keeping your face out
of the sun, you can add
in a bit of color with
Bronzers. Brush bronzer
on where the sun would
naturally hit: your
forehead, cheeks and
nose.
What You Can
Skip in Summer
You likely have your
beauty routine that you
had forever. But there are
some changes you can
make in summer. Here
are a few of them:
• No need to wash your
face in the evening and in
the morning. Too much
cleansing can strip the
skin of oils. A quick rinse
in the morning should
suffice.
• Don’t over exfoliate
as you might in winter.
Exfoliating removes the
top layers of skin, making
it extra susceptible to
sunburn.
• Try not to shampoo
daily. Instead, use a dry
shampoo to soak up any
extra oils. Your hair will
be healthier.
• No need for a heavy
moisturizer in summer. A
light one should do you.
• Instead of tanning
your face, use bronzer.
Don’t Be Afraid of
Shine
Dewy skin is gorgeous.
Don’t over powder your
face because you’re afraid
it’s a grease pit. Instead,
try blotting papers.
Foundation Is Out,
Tinted Moisturizer
Is In
If you refuse to go
bare in the summer
and can’t imagine life
without your foundation,
consider putting away
your foundation for
the season and trying
a tinted moisturizer.
Lighter than foundation,
tinted moisturizer still
covers flaws, but feels
less “cakey.” And while
foundations can feel as if
they’re melting off your
face, tinted moisturizers
won’t.
Go for a Bold Nail
Polish
If you are flaunting
your toes all over the
place this summer, then
consider painting your
nails a fun, bright color.
Bold colors such as hot
pink or bright orange
are especially popular
this summer and look
great on most skin
types. Bright colors are
especially striking against
dark skin.
Wax Your Bikini
Line
Wax, don’t shave, your
bikini line. Shaving can
bring on razor bumps
and annoying red rashes,
whereas waxing gets
the hair off and keeps it
off for much longer. It’s
simply a cleaner look for
summer.
Keep Your Thighs
from Chafing With
Antiperspirant
Try this trick I love
to keep your thighs
from chafing: apply
antiperspirant to your
inner thighs. This will
keep your thighs from
sweating and causing a
red rash. •
Diving into Cool Waters
Come summers and the sweltering heat acts as a deterrent to go out and exercise! How about a regime that
keeps you cool, while toning your body for that perfect look? Yes, we are recommending swimming this
season.
Touted as the best workout, we will explore the pros and cons of this activity. For all the fashionistas, it is also
an opportunity to flaunt those gorgeous swimsuits. And not to forget the do’s and don’ts, we will provide you
Swimming Strokes:
While there is no end to innovative
styles, some of the established ones
include:
1. Freestyle or Crawl: Done facedown
in water, it involves rotation of the
arms and paddling of the feet.
2. Backstroke: Opposite of the freestyle,
you face upwards and rotate your hands
and paddle your feet backwards.
3. Breaststroke: The technique involves
circular motion of both hands and legs,
while bobbing the body up and down.
4. Butterfly stroke: The legs and
arms move together and push the
water downwards and backwards,
consequently moving the torso
forward.
Confused about where to begin?
Well, for beginners the freestyle is the
first stroke to learn. And for swimmers,
a healthy mix of all is recommended
for the best complete exercise regime.
Breaststrokes and butterfly strokes are
difficult and should be attempted only
after practice.
The breaststroke kick also engages
the inner and outer thigh muscles
that are not used as often in other
strokes. Breaststroke is an overall upper
body workout. This stroke not only
strengthens the muscles of your upper
body but also engages the forearm,
chest and upper back muscles more
than any other stroke. The outward
sweeping motion of the hands and
inward pull of the water towards the
breast requires use of the deltoids,
biceps, triceps, pectorals and trapezium
muscles.
FITNESS
Benefits Abound
An exercise for the entire body; focused laps,
the right pace and a determined mind are all
necessary to let this activity work its magic. Regular
swimming builds endurance, muscle strength and
cardio¬vascular fitness. It exercises almost the entire
body - heart, lungs, and muscles - with very little
joint strain. It is great for general fitness.
Swimming is also a great way to deal with injuries
that restrict any form of an on-land physical activity.
For those with knee problems or back pains,
swimming not only provides a regular form of
exercise, but strengthens the weak muscles and joints
as well. Kicking workouts, water aerobics, pool
running, or a regular swimming workout can all give
you a great exercise session without the weight of
your body pounding you with each move.
For those who cannot imagine a workout without
hitting the gym, swimming is a great warm up
exercise. The gradual increase in heart rate and blood
circulation warms up the muscles preparing the body
for vigorous activity. To relax, you can also isolate
muscles in the pool and focus on them specifically,
using equipment like floating boards.
Last, but definitely not the least, is the meditative
impact of swimming. It is an exercise that rejuvenates
not just your body, but also your mind. The calm
and tranquil waters of a pool can do wonders beyond
belief.
Exercise beyond
swimming...
In addition to the laps and strokes, what else can
be done in the pool? To this our expert responded,
Yes, there are many exercise routines and activities
one can do in the pool, the most recommended
being water aerobics, water yoga, body toning
workouts, exercises for abdominal muscles, working
with weights, stretching and breathing exercise, and
games like volley-ball. All are high energy, enjoyable
and provide a fantastic cardio and toning workout.’
Best time to swim
Along with the rigor of an exercise, the timing also plays a role in
reaping the complete benefits. We asked our expert about the best time
for swimming. Early morning as that is the best time to exercise was
the response. In the mornings, after a good night’s rest, one’s energy
is at its peak, giving you the full benefit of your workout. As the day
proceeds, noon time onwards, the sun rays are most powerful, which
exposes the skin to UV radiation, and some rays will penetrate even if
one is wearing sunscreen. If you are swimming for relaxation, then an
evening swim, once the sun isn’t so strong, is also an option. Those
who don’t have the time in the mornings should head to a pool in the
evening to ensure a regular form of physical activity.
FITNESS
Limitations?
Wanting to lose weight drastically? Then swimming
is not the panacea. An exercise for toning muscles,
weight loss may come only gradually.
While you do use a lot of calories while swimming,
once you get out of the pool much of that calorie
burning stops, so swimming is in a way more
effective for body toning than for drastic weight
reduction. Doing land based exercise like running or
cycling may use about the same amount of calorie
per hour as swimming, but once you stop exercising
the land-based workout usually leads to continued
increase in calorie use for as long as 18 hours after
the workout. This is because when you are in the
pool you don’t heat up as much as you do on land,
and your body does not have to work to cool you
down as much once the exercise session concludes.
Precautions
Swimming is an enjoyable fun activity to do, but
needs to be executed with responsibility. Here are
the tips on what to do and what not to do when
swimming include:
• Swim where there is a lifeguard on duty.
Develop a buddy system – don’t swim alone or
allow others to swim alone.
• Check how deep the water is.
• Wear sunscreen of a good SPF (+30) to protect
yourself from UV radiation.
• Keep a first aid kit near the pool in case of
emergency. Being prepared for minor injuries
can help avoid major ones.
• Learn how to dive properly by taking classes.
Never dive into above-ground pools; they are
usually not deep enough. Always check the
water
depth before plunging into an in-ground pool.
• Serious spinal cord injuries, permanent brain
damage, and death can occur to swimmers who
dive into shallow water or spring upward on the
diving board and hit it on the way down.
So this summer, exercise and relax at the same time.
Swimming is a lifetime sport that benefits the body,
mind and spirit! Go out there and enjoy the pool this
at the biggest night in Hollywood - the
87th Academy Awards.
While British actor Eddie Redmayne
won Best Actor for his performance
as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of
Everything.
“It belongs to one exceptional family,
Stephen, Jane, Johnathan and the Hawking
children. I will be the custodian,” he
said as he waved the gold statuette while
accepting the award from last year’s Best
Actress winner Cate Blanchett.
Julianne Moore won Best Actress for her
role in Still Alice, collecting the gong in
her Chanel couture gown from Matthew
McConaughey.
“I am grateful for this and the
opportunity to stand up here and thank
everyone I love,” she said as she clutched
the coveted gong.
Host Neil Patrick Harris divided
opinions with his debut as the ceremony’s
host - we’re not exactly sure how he can
top Ellen’s pizza moment last year.
In fact, it was a matter of seconds before
he shocked most of the Dolby Theatre
with his opening joke.
The audience looked on in horror as
the father-of-two joked: “Welcome to
the 87th Oscars. Tonight we honour
Hollywood’s best and whitest - sorry, I
mean brightest.”
Whiplash’s JK Simmons picked up
the Best Supporting Actor gong, while
Boyhood’s Patricia Arquette collected the
award for Best Supporting Actress and
took the opportunity to make a stand for
equality, getting a standing ovation from
the likes of Meryl Streep and Jennifer
Lopez.
Rita Ora, John Legend and Jennifer
performances,with John Legend and
rapper Common’s rousing rendition of
Selma song Glory leaving British actor
David Oyelowo, Oprah Winfrey and
actor Chris Pine in tears.
Minutes later they collected the
award for Best Original Song, giving an
impassioned acceptance speech between
them.
Imitation Game won the award for
Best Adapted Screenplay while Alejandro
González Iñárritu picked up the gong for
Another highlight included Lady Gaga’s
show-stopping Sound of Music tribute.
Screen queen Dame Julie Andrews
joined the music star on stage to celebrate
the 50th anniversary of family favourite
The Sound Of Music.
After a clip of the movie, Gaga appeared
in a floaty white dress to perform a medley
featuring The Sound Of Music, My
Favourite Things, Edelweiss and Climb
Every Mountain - to an overwhelmingly
positive reaction on social media.
Dame Julie then appeared and was
given an emotional welcome from the
Poker Face singer, before recalling her
“glorious” memories of making the

1965 classic film.
And of course no awards bash is
complete without a run down of all the
sartorial successes on the red carpet.
This year, nude and red were the
colour trends, with Jennifer Aniston
and Reese Witherspoon leading the
fashion pack in two jaw-dropping
designs.
But while there were calls for Lady
Gaga to be awarded an Oscar for
her Sound of Music tribute, she also
managed to make her way onto our
worst dressed list, thanks to a huge
Alia Bhatt, Siddharth’s romantic getaway
The latest Bollywood buzz
is that actor Siddharth
Malhotra celebrated his
29th birthday in the
company of the ‘Highway’ girl, Alia
Bhatt.
This news all the more steams up
the rumours of Siddharth’s alleged
love affair with ‘Student Of The
Year’ co-star.
If reports in Indian media are to
be believed the two were in Goa
partying on the special occasion.
Interestingly, the duo is also
accompanied by Sid’s mentor and
buddy Karan Johar and also director
Ayan Mukerji.
Both Siddharth and Alia seems to
have got a good break from their
work. While Siddharth is busy with
Karan Malhotra’s ‘Brothers’ starring
Akshay Kumar and Jacqueline
Fernandez; Alia is doing Vikas Bahl’s
Varun clueless on Alia, Sidharth affair
Bollywood stars just need
to attend few events
and parties together
to be labeled as couples by the
paparazzi.
That’s what happened
with Alia Bhatt and Sidharth
Malhotra.
The duo has been painting the
town red at various events with
joint appearances. Rumours of
their alleged relationship started
gaining momentum after they
arrived in the same car at actor
Ranbir Kapoor’s Christmas
bash and apparently remained
inseparable for the entire night.
Their undisclosed New Year
vacation fanned the link-up
rumours further. Both were
caught at the airport when they
returned from their getaway.
In the meantime, Alia and
Sidharth’s ‘Student of the Year’
co-star, Varun Dhawan seems
happy for the duo.
Varun who was once rumoured
to be dating Alia said that he
is happy for all lovers in this
world. When asked specifically
about his happiness for Alia
and Sidharth, Varun chose the
diplomatic route. “I am happy
for whoever is in love.”
Bollywood.celebden reported
that Varun fringed ignorance
and asked the media, “Are they
in love? I don’t know. I was in
Vegas.”
Well, even we don’t know the
truth. We shall wait for more
substance in the rumour before
commenting further. •
