PRIMARY PE & SPORT PREMIUM
WILL DOUBLE FROM £160
MILLION TO £320 MILLION
The Secretary of State’s announcement
on school funding, includes a section
reconfirming the commitment to
doubling the Primary PE & Sport
Premium from September 2017.
The Department for Education (DfE)
has made the following statement:
“The DfE understands that schools are
keen to know how much funding they
will receive so that they can plan for the
next academic year, and are seeking
to communicate high level principles in
preparation for the new academic year.
These will be announced in due course;
however, we can confirm that all
schools will see an increase in their
premium allocation.
For more information on how much funding primary schools will receive and advice on how to
spend it please visit www.gov.uk/guidance/pe-and-sport-premium-for-primary-schools
TEACHER CPD
HOW SCHOOLS WILL RECEIVE
THE FUNDING:
• Schools with 16 or fewer eligible pupils receive
£1,000 per pupil.
• Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils receive
£16,000 and an additional payment of £10 per pupil.
The Government is committed to ensuring that all schools
are fairly funded and that money is invested in the most
effective way. After careful consideration, we have therefore
decided not to proceed with the proposed healthy pupil’s
capital programme, to provide more money to schools
through their core funding instead. Schools can, of course,
choose to invest their core funding in PE and Sport.”
DfE will publish the school level breakdown of funding
for the academic year 2017/18, including conditions of
grant, in October 2017.
Over the course of the 2017/18 academic year,
Energise Me with help from School Games
Organisers, will be organising sport specific
workshops and courses for teachers in
Hampshire and Isle of Wight.
Last year we held workshops in Gymnastics,
Athletics, Hockey, Tag Rugby, Hi 5 Netball
and Cricket across the county.
The Sessions are 2-3 hours long and are aimed at up-skilling staff
within primary schools. The workshops will vary between NGB
courses and bespoke workshops tailored to the teacher’s needs.
WHO/WHAT WAS THE IDENTIFIED PRIORITY?
• This year our ‘Friends of Newchurch’ (FONs) team
along with the school identified a new school minibus
as a priority for our fundraising drive this year.
HOW WAS IT IDENTIFIED?
• Here at Newchurch we take part in so many extracurricular
and enrichment activities, and we like to get
the students out as much as possible. We have one
minibus, but it means if we want to take a whole class
out we either need to borrow a bus from another
school or pay large fees for hiring a coach.
WHAT PROVISIONS WERE PUT IN PLACE?
• FONs are brilliant and have held many events such
as school fairs and social evenings. In my role as PE
coordinator my two big events were the Federation
Sponsored Walk and the Newchurch Nine.
• The Federation Sponsored Walk happened last
September, and all children in KS2 were invited to join
the main walk. This is approximately 14-15 miles over very
hilly mostly off-road terrain. We are federated with another
school, and both schools set off in the morning and meet at
a central location for a picnic lunch. Parents were invited to
join their children, and we had approximately 200 walkers
last year, raising around £1,500 in sponsorship.
• The Newchurch Nine is a community fun run aimed at
being family friendly and inclusive to a range of abilities.
The main event is a 9km multi-terrain run, there is a
4.5km single lap run, and a 900m family run. The athletes
range from 3 years old to international runners.
• An addition this year was a mass Zumba style warm
up in the playground by a parent and fitness instructor,
refreshments were available throughout, another unique
selling point is the raffle after the runners all finish.
This year we had around 30 brilliant prizes donated by
local businesses, and everybody who entered the event
in advance automatically got put in the draw. This brings
about much excitement, but also encourages runners to
enter in advance, and to return to the school hall following
the event where further refreshments are available.
This is the second year we hosted the event, and had
270 entrants raising over £3,100 towards the new minibus.
HOW MUCH FUNDING DID YOU RAISE?
• £15,000 and managed to purchase
a second-hand minibus.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO TAKE PART IN THE GOLDEN MILE
AND WHAT WERE THE INTENDED OUTCOMES?
• As a school, we wanted an opportunity for the
pupils to be more active in an enjoyable relaxed way.
• To improve the general health and fitness of our pupils.
HOW DID YOU IMPLEMENT THE GOLDEN MILE INTO THE SCHOOL?
• KS1 and reception started the Golden Mile by
introducing it in the PE lesson.
• KS2 used the Golden Mile as a warm-up in their PE lesson
whilst the teacher set up the equipment for the lesson.
• Children would do their laps in break and lunch times.
• We have a notice board for the Golden Mile which has
the Energise Me challenges and milestones on, champion
improver and star runner. The children are competitive not
just against each other but they set personal targets.
WHAT WAYS DID YOU COUNT THE PUPIL’S LAPS?
• Laps were tallied by the staff member or any pupils
that were unable to take part through illness or injury.
• Each class had a list of first names in alphabetical
order in 1 column for boys and 1 column for girls,
which made it easier.
DID EVERYONE TAKE PART AND HOW DID PUPILS
COMPLETE THEIR LAPS?
• All pupils participated as it is optional what speed you
go around the track. This meant that there was no pressure
on the children and all were happy to take part.
• Children would run, sprint, skip, crawl, cartwheel,
side step, run backwards or walk around.
HAVE YOU SEEN A DIFFERENCE IN THE CHILDREN?
• We have seen an incredible difference in the fitness levels
of all pupils, even those who just jogged around slowly.
The concentration and behaviour of the children has
vastly improved and it was great to see what a difference
physical activity can make to their learning.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER SCHOOLS
WHO HAVE NOT YET SIGNED UP?
• It is hugely beneficial to any school to sign up and see
the benefits it has for their pupil’s health, fitness and
“THE GOLDEN MILE WAS FAB, IT REALLY
ENCOURAGED THE PUPILS TO BUILD ON THEIR
STAMINA AND WE SAW A GREAT IMPROVEMENT
ESPECIALLY IN THE LESS PHYSICAL PUPILS.”
YEAR 2 TEACHER.
“1 PUPIL PRODUCED AN ASTOUNDING PIECE OF
WORK AT A MUCH HIGHER LEVEL THAN HE HAD
ALL YEAR AFTER RUNNING. HE ALSO HELD A VERY
ENGAGING CONVERSATION WHEN HE WAS READING
TO A MEMBER OF STAFF, WHEREAS BEFORE HE
WOULD HAVE JUST READ THE BOOK AND NOT
BEEN ABLE TO DISCUSS IT.”
GOLDEN MILE FESTIVAL
School children from across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight got the fantastic
opportunity to meet and hear from Rio 2016 Gold medallist, Helen Richardson-
Walsh MBE at the Energise Me Golden Mile Festival, held in partnership with
Winchester City Council, School Nurses and Public Health on Tuesday 11 July.
The event gave schools the chance to
hear from those already participating in
The Golden Mile, with ideas on how to
introduce it in to their school day.
Helen too talked about her experience in Rio, what it took
to get Gold and of her love for sport and physical activity
when she was their age.
Helen was joined on the stage by Dr Tim Cotton, from
NHS West Hampshire Clinical Commissioning group
who promoted the benefits of being physically active.
Helen was a true inspiration to the school children involved,
encouraging them to walk, skip and run around The Golden
Mile track. Helen even got involved in the laps herself,
taking Gold medal selfies with the kids along the way.
“WHAT A GREAT DAY AND A FANTASTIC INITIATIVE
TO PROMOTE HEALTH AND ACTIVITY IN OUR
YOUNGSTERS. IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY,
GET YOUR SCHOOL TO SIGN UP TO THE GOLDEN
MILE IN HAMPSHIRE AND THE ISLE OF WIGHT.”
HELEN RICHARDSON-WALSH MBE
SIGN UP
Energise Me are working in partnership with Premier Education, Local GP Practices,
Local NHS Clinical Groups, Hampshire School Nurses, School Games Organisers and Local
Authorities to roll the programme out across the county and encourage primary schools
to take up this free offer to help get their students more active during the school day.
A recent survey, conducted by Public Health and Disney, found that the number of children meeting the recommended
amount of physical activity (60 minutes a day), drops by 40% as they move through primary school. It was also reported
that 79% of 5-11 year olds feel happier when they are active and 72% of children feel more confident when they are doing
physical activity. The Golden Mile is a simple but effective way to incorporate physical activity into the school day.
To access The Golden Mile for free, schools need to attend a training session with Energise Me.
Cluster training sessions will take place in September/October before half-term.
If you would like to attend a training session, please email alannah.stephenson@energiseme.org
HAMPSHIRE SCHOOL GAMES RESULTS 2017
SCHOOL GAMES 2017
Over 3000 rising sport stars from across
Hampshire and Isle of Wight competed in
this year’s Hampshire School Games finals
at Aldershot on the 29 and 30 June.
Hampshire School Games 2017 was our biggest yet, with
the expansion including a day of secondary competition.
Young people from across the county competed in a range
of sports including; Athletics, Basketball, Boccia, Football,
Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Netball, New Age Kurling,
Rounders, Panathlon, Swimming, Tag Rugby, Tennis and
Volleyball. For many of these young people it will have
been their first taste of county-wide competition.
Each day started with a Welcoming Ceremony with dance
and music acts follow by a parade to the pitches, a chance
for everyone to feel part of a large multi-sport event.
The School Games is a fantastic and unique opportunity
to motivate and inspire young people to take part in more
competitive sport. The Games are backed by National
Lottery funding through Sport England and managed locally
by Energise Me with the support of the School Games
Organisers, National Governing Bodies for Sport and a
whole host of willing volunteers.
THE WINNER OF THE BEST BANNER
COMPETITION WAS WHERWELL PRIMARY
SCHOOL GIRLS FOOTBALL TEAM
Prior to the event we launched a competition whereby
each participating school was asked to create a banner
which represented their team, school, sport and recognised
at least one of The School Games Values the teams carried
these banners during the parade.
CASE STUDY
Lee on the Solent
Junior School
PLEASE VISIT THE WEBSITE WWW.LEE-ON-THE-SOLENT-JUN.HANTS.SCH.UK
The teachers and support staff at Lee on
the Solent Junior School have found The
PE Suite to have a significant impact on
the quality of teaching and learning in P.E.
This has been the case across the whole
curriculum, but particularly with dance and
gymnastics, two areas which teachers did
feel they lacked confidence in delivering
prior to the introduction of The PE Suite.
The children also love learning, finding the videos really
engaging. The colourful and vibrant imagery and the fact that
children are learning from other children has given them the
real incentive to want to take part in lessons and enjoy P.E.
The PE Suite has been found to be effective because it
facilitates the learning of the children to a much greater
depth than otherwise normally achieved in P.E.
This is due to providing the opportunity for the children to
use the videos in such a way that they can analyse their own
attempts at learning with the modelled examples to enable
a rich learning environment whereby they can both selfassess
and peer assess learning.
The barrier of having to model every skill has been removed
for teachers, as the video demonstrations provide modelled
examples which allow the children to learn from other
children giving the biomechanical and anatomical advantage
of copying examples that are similar to them. The modelled
examples break down the skills and learning to make
it easy for children using freeze frame and slow motion.
The differing camera angles also optimise the quality of
the modelled demonstrations.
The PE Suite has not just been used in a way where
children have simply copied the video demonstrations.
Children have also used creative flair by using the modelled
examples in gymnastics and dance as a stimulus and
starting point and then adapted them to create their own
sequences and motifs. The level of quality of the initial
starting point of learning with high quality sequences and
motifs means that as the children adapt them and make
them their own, the level of learning is far higher than it
was prior to the introduction of The PE Suite.
“THE VIDEOS ARE REALLY ENGAGING AND
MAKE IT REALLY CLEAR FOR THE CHILDREN TO
UNDERSTAND EXACTLY WHAT THEY NEED TO DO.
I REALLY ENJOY TEACHING P.E. AND I AM LUCKY
TO HAVE A GOOD BASELINE KNOWLEDGE OF
A LOT OF SPORTS, BUT FOR AREAS I AM LESS
CONFIDENT IN TEACHING SUCH AS GYMNASTICS
FOR EXAMPLE, IT ENABLES ME TO KNOW EXACTLY
WHAT TO DO, BREAKING DOWN THE SKILLS INTO
KEY STEPS AND ALSO SHOWING THE PROGRESSION
IN HOW CHILDREN CAN PUT THE SKILLS
TOGETHER TO FORM SEQUENCES.”
