Four Years Ago This Week For years ago this week on Monday 4th September about a hundred people were at a public meeting at Darlaston All Active Club. Amongst those people were many of the current committee and the club Directors. They were there because they had an interest in Darlaston Town Football Club and it was that day four years ago that the phoenix club of Darlaston Town FC was effectively formed. The meeting was informed that for the first time in more than 140 years (world war years excluded) there was not an adult football team representing the town of Darlaston. The "old" club were founder members of the West Midlands Regional League back in 1962/63 but had not renewed its membership for the 2013/14 playing season and to all intent and purposes the club went out of business. The one hundred or so people at the meeting unanimously agreed that they wanted an adult football team representing the town and agreed that they would support the club in any way that they could. A new committee was appointed and although at that time the "new" club did not have a name the meeting agreed that the club should be set up as a Company Limited by Guarantee. This meant that no person would again have full control over the club. A month or so later on 9 October 2013 at another public meeting, following a public vote the club was named Darlaston Town (1874) FC and the "phoenix "club of Darlaston Town FC was officially formed. So virtually four years to the day from the first meeting, here we are today as a West Midlands (Regional) League Division One Club, running the biggest independent football and clubhouse facility in the Borough. The fact we are able to do that is down to those one hundred people who gave up their free time and show an interest in their town's football team. We all owe a massive debt of gratitude to those people and the vision they showed on that night four years ago. It is because of them that we have been able to rebuild the reputation of Darlaston Town FC and are able, hopefully, to continue to make progress and restore pride in our club and town. To those one hundred people, you know who you are (and most are currently involved and support the club), on behalf of everyone at the club we say a massive thank you for taking the time and trouble to show an interest in your town and its football team. 21
