News & Views
from the
Boardroom
Today we extend a warm Paycare Ground welcome to the players,
supporters and officials of Black Country Rangers. Under the
management of former Walsall, Stourbridge and Worcester City
midfielder Sean Geddes BCR are expected to do very well this season
and we know another tough game is in store today. Win, lose or draw
the players and officials will be made most welcome to join us for our
award winning hospitality.
Well, last Saturday saw us record our first West Midlands (Regional)
League Premier Division win since 7 May 2013 when we beat Wolves
Sporting 1-0 at The City Ground. Following our enforced absence from
the Premier Division it was wonderful to record our first win of the
season against Wem Town and to cap it all a wonder goal from Noah
Diallo was a real pleasure on the eye. A magnificent crowd of 157 were
there to see our first win in the Division.
In the crowd last week were four ground hoppers from all over the
Country and they were gushing in their praise for our venue, the playing
surface, hospitality and quality of the match day programme. It is
always nice to receive good feedback. More so from ground hoppers
who travel the Country watching non-league football at all levels so to
win their seal of approval is particularly nice.
Last week saw us lose a former club skipper and stalwart of
the club as Ryan McAllister left for pastures new to continue
3

his playing career at Division One Tipton Town. Ryan was with the club
when we won the Division One title in 2006/07 and went on to have a
successful playing career. He returned “home” when we reformed in
2014/15 and many of us will remember his fantastic back heeled
winning goal in the final minute of our first Division One game at
Hereford Lads Club. Ryan is a great competitor and a Darlo boy through
and through. We all wish Ryan well at Tipton Town and he will always
be most welcome at the club.
So watch this space and please enjoy todayʼs game ………………..
The pre-season programme not only develops the players fitness levels, but also the
work we do hopefully allows the players to become more resilient to injuries during
the season. Introducing some of the ideas previously was a more difficult process as
some players had never completed some of the work that we introduced last year.
This season, the players we have worked with previously are more used to the ideas
and have taken on board the benefits not only to their overall fitness levels, the
Darlaston Town (1874) 5
Taylor 25, 88, Diallo 68, 92 Davies 82
Wem Town 0
At a sun-drenched Paycare Ground a crowd of 157 saw Darlaston
record their first win of the season as they moved up to 9th spot in
the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division.
The opening 15 minutes were even with both defences on top as
chances were restricted and neither keeper brought into any action of
note. It was the impressive Jamie Griffiths for the Shropshire based
visitors who brought keeper Liam Whittaker into action with a fine
save low to his right, with a powerful cross shot that Whittaker did
well to tip round his far post.
11

The home side
responded with
Aidan Blackham
attempting a 25
yard chip but
visiting keeper
James Behan
saved comfortably.
As the first half
went on Darlaston
started to assert
and apply pressure
on the visitors goal
as debutant
Romano Graham and Leon Taylor had goal bound efforts blocked or
saved before Taylor had a glorious opportunity to open the
scoring as he broke through the visitors defence but delayed his shot
which was eventually blocked by Jake Brown. The deadlock was
finally broken on 25 minutes.
Central defender
Liam Smith kept
alive a Noah Diallo
corner clipping the
ball to the far post,
Connor Fellows
leapt highest to
send in a majestic
header which struck
the
post,
rebounding to club
skipper Leon Taylor
who had the
simplest of tasks to
head home from 2
yards for his first goal of the season.
Darlaston should have doubled their lead on 34 minutes when a
superb Luke Charlton pass split open the visitors defence and with
just keeper James Behan to beat Taylor's vicious 12-yard drive struck
keeper Behan rebounding for a corner.
Minutes later Liam Smith powered an 8-yard header inches
over the bar from Noah Diallo's corner whilst Wem's Jordan 12

Batchelor
misdirected his
39th minute
header over the
bar.
break up any potential visitors attacks .
Lucas Hough and
Luke Charlton
were having
impressive games
in midfield
controlling matters
and thwarting
Wem's creative
play
with
interventions to
In search of an early equaliser the visitors opened the second half in
fine style Jake Brown and Griffiths both having half chances but
didn't really trouble Whittaker in the home goal.
Taylor and Graham both brought good saves from keeper Behan
before Fellows headed over.
On 68 minutes Darlaston doubled their lead from the penalty spot. A
superb 30-yard
pass by Scott
Glasby found
Leon Taylor in
the penalty
area, Taylor
controlled the
ball before
being bundled
over by Jake
Brown. Noah
Diallo
confidently
strode up to
convert the
spot kick.
This knocked the stuffing out of the visitors and the
introduction of Daniel Bolzon and TJ Davies injected power 13

and pace to the
Darlaston
attack and the
visitors played
the last 20
minutes on the
back foot as
Bolzon and
Davies caused
havoc down
both flanks.
Davies quickly
found himself
on
the
scoresheet
finishing off a superb 4 man move involving Blackham Bolzon and
Taylor before Taylor set up Davies to drive home from 10 yards on
82 minutes.
Davies returned the favour setting up Taylor to net his second goal
with a simple tap in on 88 minutes.
The best goal of the afternoon and potentially the best of the season
came in the final minute. Jake Brown brought down Liam Smith 25
yards out. Lucas Hough and Noah Diallo both stood over the free
kick but it was Diallo who stepped up to curl the ball over the wall
high into the
top right hand
corner giving
keeper Behan
no chance.
Despite the
scoreline
Darlaston were
not at their best
whilst the
visitors played
some neat
football without
having a cutting
edge.
“Beyond the
Dressing Room”
So here we are again, another home game straight
on the bounce from last week's emphatic win
against Wem Town, I have to say I feel a little bit
better now we are up and running! I had a bit of a
moment at last week's game because I always remember fondly games
against Wem Town being extremely difficult the season before.
Something just clicked last Saturday, I realised how far we had come as
a club. I looked at the immaculate pitch that is so carefully looked after
with love, a busy touchline which was from top to bottom full of
supporters and the football I did get to see was of such a good quality!
The realisation that what's happened recently to our club, folding not too
many years ago and just how much work, blood sweat and tears by
many people has gone into rebuilding our little club. It was evident how
far we have come, in such a short time.
This time of the year, for us behind the scenes is really busy, we have
several events coming up that we would love to see you at! The first one
is an 80's themed evening with live 80s band on Saturday 21 st
September and we hope it's going to be blooming fabulous. The events
come thick and fast after this with events for most of next year already
booked and penned in the diary! We have some real crackers coming up!
Merchandise is also selling well and it's great to see so many people
kitted out in Darlo colours although working out whose committee
members and who isn't is becoming a bit of a difficult issue now, we all
look the same! Haha!
This weekend Lynne and I, who largely bounce random ideas off each
other to think of innovative ways to raise money for the club have come
up with a couple of new ideas. In saying that I would urge any of you
who think you have an idea/fundraising idea or want your moment to
put on an event, please speak to either of us, as we will support your
venture. Now we are in the Premier Division costs are inevitably higher
and we need to keep that income level coming in so it's crucial to ensure
we reach and get as many people as we can to support us.
18

It's pretty special to see your ideas come to fruition and be successful,
watching people have a good time and enjoy spending time at the Pavilion
is something that I never get bored of! I love that glance out at the
dancefloor at an evening event, whether it’s a club function or a private
hire seeing people are having a good time. It’s a tremendous reward
knowing that beyond the football pitch, we can bring people together with
their families and loved ones and create so many memories. That's a bit
of a deep personal thing for me, I often tell my kids it's not the years in
your life but the life in your years and it’s so important you spend free
time doing things you love.
I am fairly sure that's why everyone comes to watch us, maybe it’s
because everyone is friendly to anyone who walks through our gates,
strangers regulars anyone who steps on our grounds. Everyone makes
such an effort to keep everyone feeling welcome and like you arrived
home because it is a second home to many of us and knowing and feeling
that is a powerful thing.
Today we face Black Country Rangers and while I know it’s going to be
really competitive; I purposely don't read too much about teams we
haven't played before, I leave that to Andy Nick and Ant. I like to come
into the game with an open mind, confident in what our team can do and
see what happens on the pitch. I am sure there will be no easy games in
this division and the lads will have to work hard and battle again for one
another but providing we play with the spirit and heart that we can and
do have I am sure we can be a match for anyone in this league.
This weekend also sees Darlaston Ladies play their last pre-season friendly
at nearby Tipton Sports Academy before opening their League campaign
on 8 th September when we host Walsall Ladies Development which will
hopefully bring a new set of supporters and a different dimension to our
club and that can only be positive so I wish them the best as they kick off
the campaign so come and support the Bella's if your free...
We are quickly heading towards the start of the youth teams league
season, and this is when the Pavilion gets really busy. For the first few
weeks we run around like blue bottomed flies trying to remember the
order and structure that worked last season! Overall, we are busy, mega
mega busy but never too busy to take 5 minutes out and take stock of
just what we have managed to achieve in a few short years at the club
and as always come 3pm I'm beyond proud of our achievements!
So, shout, sing, cheer and get behind the boys today and make the
difference.
A BRIEF
HISTORY
Paul Garner started todayʼs Black Country
Rangers team in 1998 as an extension of Black
Country Rangers Youth, allowing a pathway
from youth football into adult football.
Black Country Rangers Youth played their football in the popular
Stourbridge and District Youth League. The team over the years were
very successful winning league titles and cups at various age groups.
Black Country Rangers joined the under 18s floodlit league in 2005
playing at at the original home of Willenhall Town at Noose Lane.
The club played at Willenhall for two seasons in the Floodlit League
before applying to join the West Midlands (Regional) League at the
beginning of the 2007/8 season. The application was successful, and
they were placed is Division Two, still playing their games from Willenhall
Town.
Black Country won the Division Two League Cup at the end of 2008/09
season after finishing fifth in the League. After winning the cup at the
home of Tividale, this proved a good omen as they moved from Willenhall
Townʼs Noose Lane ground to the Beeches at the beginning of the
2009/10 season. winning the final The Beeches home of Tividale.
The 2009/10 season saw the club have their most successful season to
date, doing the League and Cup double earning promotion into Division
22

One. The stay in Division One was very brief a single season (2010/11) in
which they won the Division by nine points over Wellington Amateurs
losing just three games in the whole season.
The club had their most successful season ever in 2011/12 after being
promoted into the West Midlands (Regional) Premier Division finishing
runners up to champions Gornal Athletic losing out by 3 points over a 42-
game season, in which Black Country scored 158 goals more than three
and a half goals a game. At the end of the same season Black Country
Rangers won the sought after J.W. Hunt Cup beating the previous
seasonʼs winners AFC Wulfrunians 4-3.
Success continued in the following season, not doing so well in the
League finishing fifth, but the team retained the J.W. Hunt Cup, this time
beating Wolverhampton Casuals 4-3.
In recent years the club has had to move home many times, playing at
Cradley Town for a while, but at the beginning of the 2016/17 season,
they moved to The Grove, home of Halesowen Town, where they played
for two seasons, before being forced to move to Gornal Athletic at short
notice for the beginning of last season.
This season once again the club has moved its base, this time to York
Road, Rowley Regis, the new home of Division One side Bustleholme
The club has remained in the Premier Division for eight seasons, in which
time the club has finished second, fourth, fifth (twice) and their worst
finish was in 2015/16 finishing 15th out of 22 teams
This summer apart from moving to a new home, a new manager was
appointed former Walsall, Stourbridge and Worcester City midfielder
Sean Geddes. Geddes has been building a new squad for the forthcoming
season.
Around the League
The Premier Division is taking shape with Shifnal Town and Bewdley
Town leading the way with maximum points from their opening 4
games.
Shifnal travelled to The Aspray Arena and returned to Shropshire with a
2 goal win against Dudley Town. Brad Sharma and Rees Wedderburn
were both on target. The Shiffers played the final 30 minutes with ten
men after Harry Cunningham saw red. Bewdley are in second spot on
goal difference following a comfortable 4-0 home win against
Wednesfield. Luke Morris gave them the lead on the stroke of half
time followed by second half goals from Dylan Hart, Aaron Stubbins
and Ben Priest.
Worcester Raiders bounced back from last week’s set back at
Shawbury with a 3-2 win against struggling Bilston Town at Queen
Street. Kevin Nickle on 51 minutes and from the penalty spot and
Shaquille Lee were on target for the Steelmen, but Roland Krol
continued his hot goal scoring streak with a brace, Aaron Drake was
also on target for the visitors.
Today’s visitors Black Country Rangers slipped to fourth following an
unexpected 2-1 home loss against Bridgnorth. Anwar Ologbun and
Ben Robinson were on target for the visitors whilst Kayelden Brown
netted for Rangers who finished the game with 10 men after Joe
Burroughs saw red. Littleton edged home 2-1 against Shawbury with a
last minute winner from former Stourbridge and Lye Town midfielder
Ben Billingham. Jake Young gave the visitors the lead but a Billingham
penalty and his late winner inflicted a first defeat of the season on
Shawbury.
Wolves Casuals have yet to concede a goal. A single second half goal
from Kieran Cook was enough to settle the points against Pershore.
Former Darlaston striker James Quarry netted the only goal of the
game at Hazel Lane as Wolves Sporting beat Cradley Town. Lewis
Haughton and Zidan Sutherland goals gave Smethwick Rangers the
points at Dudley Sports.
In Division One it is great to see Willenhall Town doing so well. After
years of adversity I am delighted for Chairman Simon Hall and
his wife Sharon that the Lockmen sit proudly top of Division 25

One with a 100% record after 3 games. They entertained
Bustleholme who also boasted a 100% record and ran out
resounding 5-0 winners. Goals from Jack Dale, Fabian Facey and
Joss Allen gave them a 3-goal interval lead, two late goals by ace
marksmen Stephen Holmes completed the rout.
Old Wulfs leap frogged Bustleholme into second spot with a 2-1
away win at Allscott. James Weaver opened the scoring on 14
minutes. Tom Ray doubled their lead in the second half before
Rune Corinaldi pulled one back to set up a rousing finish. Two first
half goals in 3 minutes settled the points for Wellington Amateurs
at home to Tipton Town. Tahli Harrigan and Shane Thomas with
the goals.
In the Gornal derby, Colts and Athletic shared the points in a 2-2
draw at the Dell Stadium. Alistair McCue and Matt Smith were on
target for Colts with Drenz Bala and Kyle Peters finding the net for
Athletic. Wrens Nest fell to the bottom of the table following a 6-1
hammering at home to Team Dudley who picked up their first
points of the season. A Beckham Brazier hat-trick, a brace from
Ashley Parsons Smith and Ahmed Diamonde were on target for the
visitors with Arnold Chaponda netting a consolation goal for the
Wrenna.
In the Long Lane derby Wyrley overcame Sikh Hunters in a 2-1
win. Scott Gill opened the scoring for Wyrley on 4 minutes but
Hunters were on level terms within a minute, Nathaniel Lewars
netting the equaliser. Wyrley’s winner came courtesy of the penalty
spot. Dylan Cook stepped up to place the spot kick past Hunters
keeper Sam Butler.
In Division Two Ludlow Town displaced Newport Town from top
spot after beating their Shropshire rivals 4-1 at Shukers Field.
Goals from James Byatt Dan Griffiths and a brace from Jack Davies
settled the Shropshire derby with Jamie Harrison netting a
consolation. Under the management of former Darlaston defender
Ryan McDonagh Coven Athletic moved into second spot winning a
7 goal thriller by the odd goal against Church Stretton. Goals from
Ashley Dicken, Kyle Wainwright and two from Paul Blagrove set up
the win with Jack Davies, Owen Holdsworth and Matthew Jones all
replying for the visitors. In the only other game in the Division, two
new teams were in action at Walsall Wood as Walsall Town Swifts
thumped Worcester Raiders Reserves 7-1. A Dante Taylor hat trick
together with two from Shane Holmes and goals from Ryan
Bradshaw and substitute Kienan Palmer completed the rout.
