Severe Medical Cases Continue to Climb
September 2017
Animals arrive at the Austin Humane Society every day in search of a
second chance. For many, the journey to finding a new forever home
is a simple one, but for a growing number of animals the road to
happiness is much harder.
Zeke
For many others, like Kevin — a member of the Pekingese Pack, it
meant removing hair that had become embedded around his teeth
and intense dental care that threatened his overall health.
Kevin
Each year, our team sees more and more animals in need of severe
medical help — last year, more than 130 of them. For animals like
Zeke, that meant months with a foster family getting treatment for a
painful skin infection.
Olivia
In all of these cases, and the dozens of others, getting this medical
care allowed these animals to go from unwanted, homeless pets, to
members of loving, caring families.
This work is only possible through your tremendous support. As the
needs of the animals continues to grow, you help us grow with it.
As we speak, plans are underway to purchase dental equipment and
supplies that will allow us to treat dozens more animals in need of
minor and major dental care.
We need your help today!
Please, make a gift and help more
animals get on the road to finding their
happily ever after!
For sweet Olivia, who was found in an asphalt burner, it meant weeks
with our clinic team receiving round the clock care for life-threatening
burns that covered most of her tiny body.
Bitsa Finds Her Forever Family
The Happiest of Happy Tails
Since June, life has been full of firsts for
sweet little Bitsa. Just weeks after AHS
donors helped fund her life-changing eye
surgery, we learned Bitsa had regained
partial vision in one of her eyes. A few weeks
later, more amazing news, Bitsa could see in
both eyes!
As Bitsa continued to recover and regain
more and more of her vision, she stayed in
the care of her foster mom, who also
happens to be an AHS volunteer. Bitsa
helped teach other tiny foster kittens to eat,
play and nap like a real cat.
Bitsa also spent many afternoons at our
shelter while her foster mom volunteered and
Bitsa even greeted kids during our Summer
Kids Series events.
That’s also when she met AHS’ Development
& Education Coordinator, Anna Reed.
“When B. would tag along to the shelter, she
would hang out in my office,” Anna said.
“Unlike other cats that might feel
overwhelmed in a new environment, Bitsa
just laid down on her blanket and enjoyed the
company. I fell in love with her calm and
gentle demeanor, as well as her lack of fear.
Despite not being able to see, she is curious
and seems to put faith and trust into the world
around her.”
As we continued to try to find Bitsa a forever
home, we quickly learned we’d already found
it! Just a few weeks ago, Anna made it official
and added Bitsa to her family.
AHS donors not only
saved her life, but also gave her
the gift of vision, and for that I
am so thankful,” Anna said.
“Because of the surgery, her
quality of her life is significantly
higher. I will be forever grateful
for AHS and AHS supporters
who gave B. a second chance
at a happy and healthy life,
allowing me to meet her and fall
in love.
From all of us at AHS, thank you for
unleashing hope for Bitsa! We hope you’ll
follow along on her adventures as Bitsa
continues to explore her new world!
Special Update on the Pekingese Pack
Just over a month ago, 14 Pekingese pups arrived at AHS after
their owner passed away. Many are senior dogs with medical
needs.
We’re happy to report several of them, like Bridgette, Angelina,
and Gigi, have found new loving homes!
Thanks to so many donors, we were also able to secure medical
help for each of the pups who need it. They are currently
receiving treatments and, once complete, will be ready to find
their forever homes!
Celebrating a Summer Success
Summer is Over but the Learning Never Stops
Bridgette
A jam-packed summer of fun and learning is coming to end as the fifth annual Summer Kids Series says “so long”. During the last three
months, we welcomed more than 561 children and their families into our shelter, and oh, what fun we had!
From the kids meeting Tito the Tortoise with Austin Wildlife Rescue, to helping dozens of stuffed animals during Teddy Bear Surgery, there
were so many smiles, so many giggles and so many fantastic questions!
During each of our sessions, we helped kids learn — and sometimes the parents, too — about the animals we love. Thanks to our donors
who support this program, 100s of little ones were inspired to become animal lovers and advocates themselves.
We’re not done yet! We have some exciting changes ahead as we continue to celebrate AHS’ 65th Anniversary! If you’d like to make sure the
child in your life doesn’t miss out, you can sign them up for Hero Highlights — our new bi-monthly electronic newsletter at
www.austinhumanesociety.org/volunteer/humane-heroes/. It will be full of fun facts, activities and events all aimed at our smallest
supporters, so look for the first edition this November!
Humane education programs like Summer Kids Series are only possible because of supporters like you! With your help, we’ll teach even
more kids about the wonderful world of animals and animal welfare. Please consider making an investment in the future of our animals and
make a gift today at www.austinhumanesociety.org/volunteer/humane-heroes/.
We learned how to bottlefeed itty bitty kittens! Even our youngest doctors can join the fun! Tito the Tortoise was a real celebrity this year!
Don’t forget, we’re always ready to welcome kids into our shelter, even with school back in session. We love participating in field
trips and school projects. To find out more, contact our Development & Education Coordinator, Anna Reed, at
