Summer is just around the corner and we are<br />

daydreaming of warmer weather, longer days,<br />

and our favorite free event of the year – Summer<br />

Kids Series! Inside this month you’ll find<br />

information on our revamped Summer Kids Series<br />

which includes sessions for children and families<br />

of all ages. In addition to summer-time favorites<br />

like Story Time, Humane Hero Hour and Teddy<br />

Bear Surgery you’ll get a sneak peek at some<br />

brand new summer sessions. We are so excited<br />

about these new and improved summer learning<br />

activities and we hope you love them too. Keep<br />

reading to learn how you can go even further to<br />

help support our youngest animal lovers at AHS<br />

and have some fun too. I cannot wait to see<br />

you around the shelter this summer!<br />

SUMMER KIDS SERIES GETS BIGGER AND BETTER<br />

In <strong>2018</strong>, we have even more ways for the children in your life to get involved with the animals they love, learn about what<br />

happens at the Austin Humane Society, and be inspired during Summer Kids Series. You’ll also notice a few changes thanks to<br />

your feedback. This year there are new times, more sessions, and even something for the older Humane Heroes in your family!<br />

Summer Kids Series runs throughout June, July, and August. Registration opens on <strong>May</strong> 1st, so be sure to register early as spots<br />

do fill up! Keep reading to see the fun we have in store for you!<br />

AUSTIN WILDLIFE RESCUE<br />

Who better to help your kids explore their wild side than our friends at Austin Wildlife<br />

Rescue? Your young explorers will learn about baby animals, what to do if they see them,<br />

and how they live in the wild. Plus, we’ll have a special guest on hand…Tito the Tortoise!<br />

ART WORKSHOP<br />

When art and animals meet, who knows what will happen! Bring your budding artist and<br />

their creativity and we’ll supply the rest. Kids will create fun animal-themed works of art all<br />

while learning about cats and dogs.<br />

HUMANE HERO HOUR<br />

Keeping our animals happy and healthy has never been more fun! In this unique session,<br />

kids create toys to be used by our animals, keeping them active and engaged while they wait<br />

to find their forever home. <strong>The</strong>y’ll get to see the toys in action and meet some furry friends<br />

along the way.<br />

STORY TIME<br />

Imagination unleashed! Children will learn all about animals through a silly and sweet storybook.<br />

<strong>The</strong>n, they’ll get the chance to read to an animal at the shelter who can’t wait to hear<br />

their tale.<br />

TEDDY BEAR SURGERY<br />

Through Teddy Bear Surgery, your little one and their favorite stuffed animal can step into<br />

the real-life animal clinic at AHS. Kids are invited to bring their stuffed animals for a little<br />

TLC as our shelter team helps cure what ails them!<br />

TAIL TALKS<br />

Tail Talks is your child’s chance to dig a little deeper into the world of animals. Each session<br />

features a fun and fascinating topic that will help them understand animals a bit better.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se interactive sessions are best suited for 8-12 year olds and will include special guests<br />

each week!<br />

IT’S SHOWTIME: OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT<br />

Load up your pack for a family-friendly movie night at AHS. Bring a blanket or lawn chair<br />

and we’ll have concessions, games, and kid’s activities to keep the fun going. Well-behaved,<br />

leashed dogs are welcome and encouraged!<br />

AHS IS ASKING FOR YOUR HELP<br />

This year’s kitten season has kicked-off in a very big way. Dozens of itty bitty kittens are now arriving each week to the Austin<br />

Humane Society and our kitten nursery is a flood of activity. <strong>The</strong> tiniest kittens, just a few days old, their eyes not even open,<br />

are known as bottle babies. Your gifts make it possible for these bottle babies to get the second chance they deserve. Kittens like<br />

Pepperoncini – who was abandoned and brought to AHS for care.<br />

Pepper at one-week-old Pepper at two-weeks-old Pepper at six-weeks-old<br />

Pepper, as he was nicknamed, went to live with one of our most experienced foster families and for the next several weeks, was<br />

fed, cleaned, and loved round-the-clock. “He loved everyone and LOVED to suckle on my fingers like a human pacifier!” foster<br />

mom, Megyn recalls.<br />

Your donations ensured Pepper had everything he needed to help him grow big and strong. After weeks in foster, Pepper came<br />

back to the shelter and was immediately adopted by a fantastic family!<br />

Over the next few months, AHS will care for more than 1,000 bottle babies just like Pepper. We need you! Now is a purr-fect<br />

<strong>The</strong> situation for animals and their families in Puerto Rico<br />

remains challenging more than six months after Hurricane<br />

Maria devastated the island. That is why the Austin Humane<br />

Society has once again partnered with Puerto Rico Animal<br />

Unite, JPB Foundation, St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center,<br />

and others working to get more animals reunited with their<br />

families on the mainland.<br />

Our first mission took place in February when 31 dogs and cats<br />

were flown from the island to Austin where AHS helped reunite<br />

them with loved ones who were anxiously waiting.<br />

Just a few weeks ago, AHS President and CEO Frances Jonon<br />

traveled to Puerto Rico to be a part of the effort to reunite animals<br />

with their families for the second time.<br />

Aika and her 2 siblings were reunited with their family<br />

“We were honored to be working side by side in Puerto Rico with<br />

local groups, as well as shelter experts and volunteers from across<br />

the country, to support the effort of reuniting families along with<br />

relocating homeless animals to the mainland. <strong>The</strong> collaborations<br />

and partnerships being built in Puerto Rico will be critical in moving<br />

positive progress forward on the island.”<br />

Jonon then escorted 16 dogs and cats, plus one very social<br />

rabbit, on the flight to Austin. Again, our team was there to<br />

transport the animals from the airport to the shelter where<br />

they were reunited with their families – many of whom they<br />

had not seen in months!<br />

Families are overwhelmed with joy<br />

Jonon also brought back 14 dogs and puppies who had been<br />

living in damaged shelters on the island. Puerto Rico has over<br />

350,000 stray dogs and 1 million stray cats to contend with;<br />

Hurricane Maria burdened an already complex and severe problem.<br />

“Although the problems in Puerto Rico are big, the passion<br />

of the partnerships in Puerto Rico is bigger. <strong>The</strong> collaborative<br />

energy and enthusiasm is inspiring!”<br />
