TMEA BACK THEN IN THIS ISSUE, TMEA President Taylor Hagan’s address focused on the function and scope of TMEA. The governance of TMEA in 1953 consisted of a 21-member State Board of Directors consisting of three representatives from each division of the state that represented vocal and instrumental music education at all levels (elementary, secondary, and collegiate). The TMEA State Board of Directors also comprised three administrative representatives from the Elementary and Secondary Principals’ Association and Superintendents’ Association. MTSBOA members wrote letters of objection to WSM-TV regarding the lack of air time coverage being given to the high school bands during halftime show performances for broadcasts over radio and television. A new editorial board was appointed with the central charge of deciding on controversial issues regarding publication polices of the Tennessee Musician. An article from Brother H. Richard also appeared, titled, “A Principal Speaks: The Value of High School Bands” Richard was principal at Christian Brothers in Memphis, Tennessee. Ralph Hale was the school’s band director. Richard’s article is interesting as it presents music education advocacy points of the 1950s from an administrator’s perspective. ETSBOA president Gilbert L. Scarborough, wrote an article on the growing pains faced by the association as participation in ETSBOA sponsored activities was at its largest. This year also marked the first East Tennessee Junior High and Senior High School String Clinic. TMEA printed a roll-call of paid member’s names for the calendar year of 1953.
