From the President
In First Person
In a recent development that
will cheer our business
c o m m u n i t y , K a r n a t a k a
continues to be the country’s
top preferred destination for
investments. The Trade and
Industry is still grappling with
the complex new Goods and
Services Tax (GST) rolled out
post-July 2017 and the trade
and industry bodies are
slowly getting the nuances of
the law in place and hopefully,
in the coming months the nation will be GST-compliant.
There are bound to be several teething problems
d u r i n g t h e o n g o i n g i m p l e m e n t a t i o n o f a
transformational indirect tax regime such as GST.
The FKCCI is setting up GST Simulation & Facilitation
Centres in all districts of Karnataka in association with
District Chambers of Commerce. Any Member of the
Chamber can visit the GST Simulation Centre and seek
clarification on specific issues related to their line of
business. They are open basically to accelerate the process
of GST integration especially among the MSME players who
are finding it difficult to understand and grasp the nuances of
the new law. The Chamber has partnered with renowned
technology companies and the tax department to guide
Members in solving compliance issues.
India is expected to be home to a workforce of 500 million
by 2022. About 12 million persons are expected to join
the workforce every year. However, only 10% of the total
workforce in the country receives some kind of skill
training (2% with formal training and 8% with informal
training). Considering the increasing requirement for
skilled labour, FKCCI has decided to set up a Skill
Development Institute. We are thankful to KIADB for
having allotted 1.5 acres of land for setting up the
Institute in Dobbaspet Industrial Area which shall aim to
support the following objectives:
Skill development for ITI graduates
Exposure to real-life workplace situations
Exposure to latest trends in Manufacturing/Innovation
Collaboration with international skill development
partners in Germany and Switzerland
Host startups/incubators and provide mentoring
and support for their growth
The continued crisis in the farm sector has alarmed us all
and so we at the FKCCI joined hands with Media Today
Group to organize the 9th Edition of Agri-Tech India
2017 and Foodex 2017 which gave a single, common
platform for all stakeholders of the farm sector to come
together and stave off the crisis. All of us, especially from
Industry, Trade and Commerce, need to join hands to
encourage the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘More Crop, Per
Drop’ and we at the Federation would like to urge the farm
sector to adopt newer technologies in the cutting edge to
increase farm output and better the quality of produce.
FKCCI will establish a Centre for Business Excellence at
its state of-the-art new Centenary building and conduct
certification courses on export documentation, labour
laws, tourism, GST etc. in association with government
agencies and professional bodies. Sir MV Research
Centre will be started where several position and
research papers by renowned experts on a crosssection
of relevant and topical subjects will be released,
and support extended to the government to improve the
Ease of Doing Business by highlighting pain-points of
the industry and helping policy -makers to tune in with
the industry requirements.
For the first time, FKCCI will be representing at the
prestigious international Conference, the “World
Chambers Congress”, a premier event of its kind
bringing together chambers, business and government
figures on a single platform to discuss issues related to
trade and industry, scheduled between September 19
and 21, 2017 at Sydney, Australia.
In conclusion, I would like to state that the initiatives
enumerated above, would enable FKCCI to play the role of
a policy facilitator more effectively. Development, being a
continuous process, I intend taking forward in continuing
the initiatives taken by my predecessors along with my
action plan. This would be possible only with the active
support of the Government, the visionaries of the State
and the Centre, Print and Electronic media, Members of
FKCCI and the people of the State.
With warm regards
Agri-Tech India 2017
FKCCI’s initiative to find solution for agrarian crisis
The farm sector should adopt newer and cutting edge
technologies to increase farm output and better the
quality of produce to achieve the Prime Minister’s vision
of‘MoreCrop,Per Drop’:K.Ravi,President, FKCCI
FKCCI created history by organizing the 9th Edition of
Agri Tech India 2017 and Foodex 2017 in association
with Media Today Group at the Bangalore International
Exhibition Centre (BIEC), Bengaluru from August 28-30.
The event was held concurrently with many other
exhibitions in its fold such as India Foodex, Grain Tech
India, Dairy Tech India, Flora Tech India organized by
Media Today Group, India’s Leading Agro-Trade Events
and Publication Group, and a pioneer in organizing
focused and highly specialized Trade Exhibitions.
In a press release prior to the event, FKCCI informed
that the Federation had been actively associated with
the Agri-Business Sector in terms of raw material
procurement, supply of inputs and trading farm
produce and noted that the farm sector was going
through a paradigm shift from conventional methods
to more precision-based agriculture supplemented
by advance technologies, mechanization and
automation involving several fields of science such as
Engineering, Biotechnology, Satellite Technology,
ICT, Robotics, Nanotechnology and many more.
According to Sri K. Ravi, President farming cannot be
profitable if it is limited to only production and the
present-day challenge is to deliver the food products
produced to consumers as fresh as possible – like
what is described as farm-to-fork in some quarters -
with utmost safety, minimum wastage and maximum
economy, and at the same time aim at prevention of
soil and water depletion, reduce pollution, conserve
natural resources, use inputs economically, improve
efficiency and provide for biodiversity.
FKCCI for ‘More Crop, Per Drop’
“With the change in the agriculture scenario FKCCI
wants to actively engage with the stakeholders in the
sector and help the farming community to enhance
its profits and at the same time ensure sustainability.
Newer and newer technologies are helping
to produce more, as well as in improving the quality
of the produce, and our goal should be to achieve
‘More Crop, Per Drop’ as the Prime Minister has said,”
the FKCCI President said in the release. “These
challenges should also be seen as a great opportunity
to boost agriculture trade internationally and reap
higher profits, besides creating employment
opportunities especially in rural areas. It is time that
we showcase the new technologies, innovations,
global developments and potential employment
opportunities available and the Agri-Tech 2017
has been organized to provide such a platform
for all stakeholders.”
In his informal interaction with the participants, Chief
Guest, H.E. Sri Vaju Bhai Ruda Bhai Vala, Governor of
Karnataka, expressed his happiness at the FKCCI, an
apex organization for industry, trade and service sectors
of Karnataka also associating with the farm sector and
promoting the Agri-Tech India 2017 Exhibition.
As the FKCCI President explained, Karnataka as a
leader in knowledge-based, technology-driven,
industries like IT, Biotechnology, Electronics, Telecom,
Aerospace and other industries, and recognized as the
Knowledge hub of Asia with the largest number of R & D
Centers in India, offers ample opportunities for the
growth of agriculture sector. Though India has attained
self-sufficiency in food production, depleting soil and
water resources, increase in pollution, reduction in biodiversity,
increase in cost of production, labour shortage,
global completion and most importantly wastage of
produce in transit, storage and distribution from the
Commendable initiative from FKCCI
Observing that despite Green Revolution and
quadrupling of farm production, living standards of
farmers had not improved and the next generation
among the farming community was moving away
from their basic profession which was a very
farms to the consumer, combined to reduce
profitability in farming activity. The only way to
address this challenge and make agriculture more
competitive, Sri Ravi said, was to adopt modern
techniques in production as well as post-harvest
technology which could reduce wastage, improve
quality and ensure safe delivery to the consumers,
and this involved various stages such as handling of
the produce, transportation, packaging, storage,
cold chain management, labelling etc.
The agricultural sector also required the support and
services of Financial management, Capital providers,
Legal support, Consultancy services, Infrastructure
developers, and Food regulators if it had to achieve
higher growth, according to the FKCCI President who
added that food exports offered another big opportunity
that had huge potential given our rich biodiversity with
variety of food crops, horticulture, fruits, vegetables &
flowers, spices and plantation crops, dairy and poultry
products as well as a long coast line, rivers and tanks
which gives great opportunity to exploit the potential of
fisheriesinenhancingtrade.
disturbing trend, as food production was the most
critical need of the country, Sri Ravi stressed that
there was a lot of untapped potential for adding value
to the farm produce and thus enhance the
incomes/profitability. The onus for this should be as
MYSORE C MMERCE F K C C I J o u r n a l Issue 09
muchonincreasedproductivityasonsustainabilitywhich
necessitated optimum use of the limited resources.
Analysing the present crisis in the agrarian sector, Sri
K. Ravi in his address to the participants, listed
various factors responsible such as excessive cost of
operation, depletion of groundwater resources and
water table, labour shortage, deficient marketing,
lack of processing facilities and value-addition. The
crisis was further compounded by the migration of
farmers from villages to urban areas and cities,
forsaking their farming profession. The only solution
was a wider and holistic embrace of technology
which could yield sustainability. Hi-tech applications
drawn from mechanical engineering, robotics,
satellite technology, ICT, IOT, could deliver optimum
operational efficiencies and drive up profits.
Calling for a holistic approach to bring about an
evolution in the farm sector, beginning from growing
the business and targeting the export of the produce,
to legal support and financial advisory services,
FKCCI suggested that a Panel of Experts drawn from
diverse domains should be formed to come up with
an advisory service for the farm sector.
On the conduct of the Agri-Tech India Exhibition, Sri
Ravi said this year, the event included an innovative
Culinary Competition which would be very useful to
know about new and emerging opportunities in food
processing sector and also for the Hospitality industry
which could make use of it as a value-added service.
Summing up, the FKCCI President hoped that the
Federation’s commendable initiative of bringing
together all stakeholders of farm sector under one
roof at the Agri-Tech India 2017 will help to develop
new strategies for enhancing farm incomes, reducing
drudgery, and making it more sustainable.
The event also offered a window of opportunity for
collaboration between various stakeholders such as
food processing sector, infrastructure services,
specialized agricultural machinery manufacturers,
supply chain management experts, food safety
standards and quality experts.
Sri M.B. Naqvi, CEO and Sri Jaffer Naqvi, Chief
Editor, Media Today Group, were among the hostorganizers,
and Sri Vasanth Kumar, Former
Secretary, Food Processing, GoK, Office Bearers,
Bengaluru startup’s App to help farmers avoid price crash
MC
A Bengaluru-based startup has developed an app
that keeps farmers up-to-date on demand and supply
since lack of such information leads to excess
production and price crash.
Giving details of the app, D. Prasanna, Founder of the
start-up, Way2ABI, at his stall in AgriTech India 2017,
said, “Frustrated farmers destroy their produce since
a price crash means they do not even get the input
cost. The root of the problem is lack of information
about demand and supply. As smartphones have
found their ways to the remotest corners, we thought
an app would help farmers.”
MYSORE C MMERCE F K C C I J o u r n a l Issue 09
MYSORE C MMERCE F K C C I J o u r n a l Issue 09
Though the Government has launched several
schemes to help farmers, real time information is
missing. “The agriculture department’s information
stops at details of sowing area. There is no production
forecast. We don’t even get last year’s data on
production. Farmers need timely information,” he said.
The app, ‘Way2ABI Agri FBI’, provides weekly
updates on demand trends in Agriculture Produce
Marketing Committees as well as information on
district-wise supply and demand ratio. Farmers also
get graphs, charts, market review and summary about
10 crops, including onion, tomato, coffee, cotton and
tur, that see ups and downs on a regular basis.
FKCCI Events
Downloaded by about 3,500 farmers already, the app
is getting recognised for its crucial information. “We
have to look at the production trend in India as well as
import scenario. For example, we came to know
about high yield of onion in Maharashtra and advised
farmers not to wait for a better price,” he said.
For now registration for the app is free. The company
first wants to reach as many farmers as possible and
only after convincing the farmers of the app’s use,
they intend to charge about Rs 500 for four months.
Clarify Confusion about Compliance under RERA Act to avoid
Disruption in Real Estate: K. Ravi, President, FKCCI
MC
place by the developers before selling the properties,
and requested the Principal Secretary of Housing
Department to Sri Kapil Mohan to guide the Members
about the way forward.
Starting the proceedings, Dr. B. Amaranath,
Chairman, Civic Affairs & Urban Development
Committee, FKCCI said the authorities should check
and verify the credentials of the promoters and their
agents before they are registered and wide publicity
be given for the benefit of the public while also
ensuring that 70% of the deposit amount made by the
promoters is not diverted.
Addressing the Members, Sri Kapil Mohan, IAS
informed that under the RERA Act, the Karnataka
Real Estate Regulation and Development Rules, 2017
was approved by GOK and notified on July 10, 2017.
The basic objective behind the RERA Act was to
encourage greater transparency, citizen-centricity,
accountability and financial discipline and the Act
seeks to regulate all the ongoing projects as well as
projects which are proposed to be launched. As of
now, 1,100 registrations had been made with RERA in
Karnataka and the penalty for violation of the Act is as
high as 10% of the Project cost, he said.
This was followed by a detailed presentation on the
salient features of RERA Act, viz. procedures on the
registration on the project, mandatory disclosure of
project details, functions and duties of promoters,
compulsory deposit of 70% by the promoters in a
separate account, functions of the Real Estate
Regulatory Authority, establishment of Real Estate
Appellate Tribunal and the Punitive Provisions.
Thanking FKCCI for taking the initiative to spread
awareness among the real estate sector, he said the
Department plans to conduct such programmes on
RERAActintheDistrictswheretherealestate isthriving.
In a unique initiative by the FKCCI, an online
webcasting of the programme was made available for
viewing both nationally as well as in overseas
countries. The link livewebcasting.in/kapilmohan/can
Avoid Disruption
MC
Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) = Lesser Time
for Redressal @ Lower Cost
Property developers were in a tizzy about the policy
aspects related to the Real Estate Regulatory
Authority (RERA) Act 2016 and this had put the real
estate sector in a quandary affecting its growth,
Sri K. Ravi, President, FKCCI observed, at an
Interactive Session with Sri Kapil Mohan, IAS,
Principal Secretary, Housing Department, GOK,
held at FKCCI on August 16.
Acknowledging that the landmark RERA Act 2016
legislation aimed to regulate and streamline the
housing activities so as to safeguard the interest of
buyers as well as regulate the activities of the
promoters/developers, he said there were a lot of
grey areas which needed clarification about the
nature and kind of compliances that are to be put in
An understanding of dispute resolution and conflict
management was integral to running any successful
business but the ground reality is awareness on this
issue is very sketchy. It is with this in mind that
the FKCCI decided to organize an interaction on
Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) extended by
the Judiciary Department/High court by Hon’ble
Sri Vishwanath V Angadi, Dist. Judge (Retd) at FKCCI
on August 11, said Sri K. Ravi, President, FKCCI in his
opening remarks and welcome address. He also
hoped that such exchange programmes would be
held at other Districts in Karnataka for the benefit of
the business fraternity.
Addressing the participants, Sri Vishwanath V. Angadi,
Dist. Judge (Retd) explained that the Alternate
Dispute Resolution (ADR) facilitates lesser time for
redressal and also the cost involved is very less when
compared to civil matters. There are two types of Dispute
Resolutionviz.Adjudication;andThirdpartynegotiations
through ADR, and similarly there are two kinds of
Adjudications viz. Public Forum; and Private Forum.
The Arbitrator’s work is discharged by a civil judge
and so no fee is payable to the court. In case of Public
Forum, the choice of Adjudication was not available,
whilesuchchoicewasavailableincaseofPrivateForum.
Minimum Wages Hike Hurting Small Industry: President
Explaining the differences between a conflict and a
dispute, Sri Vishwanath V. Angadi said while a
Dispute is taken to court and attended by the
arbitrators, a dispute is the product of a Conflict and
the end-product of disputes is litigation.
On Mediation, he said it denoted third party negotiation
out of court. Arbitration and Conciliation wereother ways
of tackling the issue. The Mediator is a facilitator and
a negotiator, and he explores all sorts of options to
find a solution that is agreeable to both the parties.
Referring to Lok Adalat, Sri Vishwanath V. Angadi
said it was a pre-litigation case and a people’s court
which has sittings on every 2nd Saturday.
Recovery of Rs. 1 crore or any amount more than Rs
20-30 crore will be charged at Rs 12 lakh only to the
Arbitration Centre.
As regards Conciliation, he said the conciliator works
as adjudicator. This incurs no fees and a solution can
be found in about one year and three months
maximum. All disputes of contract like: Lease
agreement, supplier- customer, cases involving grant
of bankers, builders, developers, licensor, licensee
are covered under this.
The interaction concluded with vote of thanks by
Sri C.R. Janardhana, Vice-President, FKCCI.
The small entrepreneur is like an unsung hero, a last
mile entrepreneur who contributes substantially to
the national economy but does not enjoy the luxury of
having the support of special interests/identity
groups and therefore it was the responsibility of
industry bodies to fight unitedly to render justice to
the Micro, Small & Medium Scale Enterprises
(MSME), Sri K. Ravi, President, FKCCI, declared
at an Interaction with Sri Zaheer Basha, Addl.
Commissioner of Labour, GoK held at FKCCI Cabinet
Hall on August 9. “The Labour Department has to
adopt a proactive approach in favour of the MSME
sector and be a helping hand rather than a hindrance
in getting justice to our small entrepreneurs,” he said.
Opening the session, Sri P.C. Rao, Chairman, Labour
Laws Committee requested the Chief Guest to throw
light on the recent amendments in Labour Laws
especially with regard to the stipulation of Minimum
Wages and its effect on Trade and Industry.
Addressing the participants, Sri Zaheer Basha, Asst.
Labour Commissioner, while appreciating the
concerns expressed by the FKCCI President,
stressed that the Department was giving continuous
attention to improving the Ease of Doing Business,
listing some of the recent measures and initiatives
such as, establishing of e-Karmikas for shops and
commercials establishments where applications for
the same were to be submitted online; online mode
being introduced for registrations and licensing
which will be completed by August-end; third party
inspections introduced for auditing compliances in
Labour Laws, and such other initiatives.
Interaction session:
Sri Tallam Venkatesh, Past President remarked that
the proposed hike in Minimum Wages would result in
a MSME entrepreneur incurring 1.4 times more loss, with
thehike inminimumwages amounting toalmost 200%.
Sri N. Satish, Chairman of Industry Committee pointed
out that in countries like Vietnam and Bangladesh
the wages to labour was very low and appealed
to the Department to consider having a MSME
representative on the wage Board of the Government.
Sri Allam Burji, MC Member said the notion that it is
acceptable for a MSME to suffer while offering better
wages to employees was questionable and illogical.
Sri Arun Kumar, Past President pointed out how the
number of shows presented by a theatre had come
down from six to four, even while an operator could
manage as many six digital projectors, and averred
that the Government was indirectly following “survive
or close’ policy.
Dr. Philip Lewis, Past President observed that the
garments and the casting industry were the worst
affected by the hike in minimum wages. Asking the
industry to pay Rs 18000 minimum monthly wage
was an idea whose time had not come yet and could
be possible five years from now, he opined, and said
the ease of doing measures should be seen to
improve the ground reality, and not just on paper.
Sri Ramesh Patil, President, KCCI, Hubballi said the
Department should consult the MSME sector before
introducing such major policy measures that could
put a question mark on their very survival.
Ms. Jessy Lawrence, MC Member drew on her own
experience and said the Garment industry would
prefer levy of import tax on garments than the hike in
Minimum Wages.
Sri Rahul Goyel, MC Member also echoed the
observations made by the Members and said the
small entrepreneur needed to be protected rather
than make it difficult for him to survive.
Dr. Gubbi, Head Legal Wing, FKCCI pointed out that
E m ployer’s representatives are very less and
Employees representatives are more in the Wage Board
which resulted in the hike in Minimum Wages and FKCCI
was awaiting a response from the Government for its
suggestion to increase the representation of the
Employers in the Minimum Wage Board.
Replying to the queries, Sri Zaheer Basha, Asst. Labour
Federation moots formation of Southern Council for Traders
FKCCI promises to promote NSIC Schemes for MSMEs
“A Southern Council or Association may be formed
for this purpose under Section 8, based in either
Bengaluru or Chennai with two representatives from
each State,” Sri K. Ravi said and added that “FKCCI is
ready to extend its full support and take the lead role
for this initiative with other trade bodies.”
Sri M. Abdul Subhan, VP, CITA, Pondicherry gave
the example of how GST was hurting the hotel
industry by an additional levy of 18% on hotels with
AC facility, due to which business had come down
and at this rate Pondicherry may well be reduced to
a municipality or corporation.
Issues related to the business & trading community
that are common to all southern States especially in
the context of the GST rollout, may be represented in
one voice before the Government so that they are
heard and heeded by the powers that be, Sri K. Ravi,
President, FKCCI, suggested at a meeting convened
at FKCCI Cabinet Hall with the South Indian Trade
Associations on August 3. .
At the outset, Sri Bharath Kumar R. Shah, Chairman,
APMC, Internal Trade & Food Processing Committee,
FKCCI welcomed the representatives from the
different States and invited them to share their
perspective of the problems in their region.
Sri Praveen, Mobile Dealers Association, conceded
that the business community had to make peace
and work with the new changes introduced by the
Government and upgrade their business to meet the
challenge, even while supporting the cause of the
traders as the President had emphasized.
Sri D.A. Prasanna Kumar suggested that the
proposed Council representing all southern States
and the UT of Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar
should first focus on resolving the concerns or the
trading community related to GST and said there
should be meetings at each of the southern States to
strengthen coordination and local-level engagement.
In his introductory remarks, Sri C.R. Janardhana, Vice-
President, FKCCI observed that the problems faced
by traders in South India was unique to the region
which was why it was necessary for all south Indian
trade bodies to work together and said the GST in its
present form is more convenient to the Government
than the common man, and therefore needed to be
improved upon. He also suggested that the proposed
Governing Council Members should be formed with 4
representatives from different States.
Sri M. Nijabddin, Coordinator, South Zone, Calicut
(Kerala) called for a formation of a joint Council
representing six States of southern India viz. Karnataka,
Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh
and Telangana, apart from the Union Territories of
Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar who had
consented to join such a Council. Only such a Council
could help in better engagement with the Centre for a
focused response on their specific issues, he said.
Explaining the way forward, Sri Ramesh Chandra
Lahoti, Vice-Chairman, -- Committee, FKCCI, said
the proposed new non-profit body to be named as
South India Traders Association (SITA) under Section
8 will represent common issues of the southern
region such as GST, FSSAI, APMC, Distributors of
Pharma (FMCG), Distributor of Electrical compliance
etc, with 4 representatives from 6 districts and 2
representatives from Union Territories of Lakshadweep,
and Andaman & Nicobar, and 3 advisors from
Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and one PRO
based in Delhi.
After a detailed discussion among the Members,
it was decided that the proposed Council would hold
regular meetings with the next meeting scheduled for
August 22 at Chennai and the decisions taken would
be followed up with the elected representatives of
the corresponding State for redressal from the
concerned authorities.
Sri Ravindra Nath, C&MD, NSIC New Delhi, visited FKCCI
on August 3 along with Sri Ravikumar, CGM, Bengaluru,
Smt. MS. Kokila, Branch Manager NSIC, Peenya, and
other Officials for an interaction with the Members.
Karnataka has vast untapped potential in Eco-Tourism,
a high job growth sector
what may be called as national travellers and do not
include domestic travellers, he noted. Tourism is by far
the largest industry with huge earnings of over US$ 1,250
Billion and is the largest employer worldwide employing
one out of every 10 persons is still rapidly growing.
In the Indian context, he pointed out that we get
around nine million International Tourists every year
but if you look at the Domestic Tourism it is extremely
huge with nearly 400-500 million Domestic Tourist
Travel annually. This is easily one of the largest
movements of Travellers anywhere in the world, he
declared saying it is equal to half of India’s population
travelling every year within the country. Thus the
potential for economic growth in the interior areas,
rural villages and towns, and for eco-tourism itself, is
tremendous and vastly untapped, he said.
Eco-Tourism definition as per World Tourism
Organization (WTO): “Tourism that involves
travelling to relatively undisturbed natural areas
with the specified object of studying, admiring
and enjoying the scenery and its wild plants and
animals, as well as any existing cultural aspects
(both of the past and the present) found in these
areas.” (WTO, 1999)
Turning to Karnataka, Sri Vinay Luthra said Karnataka has
the highest number of tigers in the world with 400 Tigers
and the State is also number one elephant State of the
World,withover6000+Elephantsasperthelatestcensus.
To protect wildlife environment, Sri Luthra said they
have come with a program called Support the Tiger
and the Charter of desirables is a wish-list of activities
drawn by the custodian/director of the Tiger Reserve or
protected area which need support. These fall outside
regular Government funding or activity which needs
higher budgetary support. These activities are in line
with the approved management Plan like
Constructions Adoption of anti poaching camps and
we need Camera traps to identify the Tigers and protect
them and create nature awareness by supporting
nature camps and Eco-tourism faculties, better
communication systems and vehicles for patrolling.
During the interaction, Sri Shiv Shanmugam, Past
President said the Federation was willing to spread
awareness about eco-tourism opportunities in many
countries with which it had signed MoU. Sri C.R.
Janardhana, Vice-President, Past Presidents, MC
Members, Sri P. Radhakrishnan, Secretary-General,
took part in the deliberations.
Eco-tourism is one of the fastest growing segments in
the Tourism Industry worldwide and Environment has
an intrinsic value which outweighs its value as a
tourism asset, Sri K. Ravi, President, FKCCI, at an
interaction with Sri Vinay Luthra, IFS (Retd),
Chairman, Karnataka Eco-Tourism Development
Board and Former Principal Chief Conservator of
Forest Department of Forest, GoK, held at Cabinet
Hall, FKCCI on August 23.
Considering that multitude of tourists visiting
Karnataka including the domestic tourists do visit
destinations that fall in the categories of Eco-tourism
and nature- based tourism; it is pertinent that we add
value and bring about positive growth. Karnataka has
been in the forefront of many aspects of tourism
promotion and of late there has been a qualitative
churn and focus on Eco-tourism, Sri K. Ravi,
President, FKCCI noted.
Observing that tourism and environment enjoy a
symbiotic relationship, the dilemma however is that
the residents lay greater stress on tourism
development whereas the society at large focuses on
environmental protection. In this context, Ecotourism
is being promoted as a means of ‘giving
nature value’ and hence achieving sustainable
tourism. The term ‘eco-tourism’ has been defined in
many ways and is usually used to describe tourism
activities which are conducted in harmony with
nature, he said, and expressed the hope that ecotourism
can provide the local community with jobs,
enabling a shift away from unsustainable practices
such as over grazing, mining or logging in
environmentally sensitive eco systems.
Delivering a lecture on “Tourism & Planet Committed
for Greener Future”, Chief Guest Sri IFS (Retd),
Chairman, Karnataka Eco-Tourism Development
Board and Former Principal Chief Conservator of
Forest Department of Forest, GoK, quoted statistics
that show that nearly 1.3 billion people travel every
year from one country to another, These constitute
Spend Quality Time with your Children to fight
Blue Whale Challenge: President
Describing the Blue Whale challenge as an example
of lopsided awareness especially among the
emotionally and intellectually vulnerable youth,
Sri K. Ravi, President, FKCCI urged the Parenting
community to spend more time with their children so
that they can understand the external influences that
drive children to wholly negative and undesirable
practices, leading even to suicide, as had happened
in many cases around the globe.
Suddenly people are starting to talk about this online
game called Blue Whale, and how it constitutes a threat
to young lives, not just in Bengaluru, but the world over.
With a view to warn the youth about the danger it
poses to their very life, a Round Table was held at
FKCCI on August 20 to discuss the “Responsibilities
of Parents” in addressing the Blue Whale Challenge
issue which as seen many youngsters committing
suicide across the world.
Addressing the participants, the FKCCI President
observed that while digitization in India was increasing
by leaps and bounds, paradoxically the users of digital
tools had woefully inadequate knowledge about the
implications of such usage. Dr. Shivanand Naik, a Child
Psychologist who specializes in Graphology and handwriting
analysis discussed the various behavioural
traits that provide early indications of Children getting
addicted to a game such as Blue Whale Challenge.
The expert speakers highlighted the effects of Internet
Addiction behind the Blue Whale Challenge and said that
Internet is a powerful audio visual medium that can be
used by psychopaths as is evidenced in the case of Blue
Whale Game to brainwash and hypnotize the children.
This technique can also be used for stealing financial
informationoftheparentsleadingtofinancialcrimes.
It was emphasized that Parents’ role is important in
identifying the Internet Addiction of their children but
they need to then take a pause and check if they are
themselves setting a proper role model for their
children and if not, first correct themselves. More
than the Parents, Schools are better placed to take
corrective action and they should not push the
responsibility only to the parents.
The Karnataka Government has taken note of the Blue
Whale Challenge menace that is suspected to have
pushedatleastthreeteenagerstosuicideinthecountry.
Though no such deaths have been reported in the
State yet, the Government wants to reach out to
schools and colleges, besides educating the parents
about the ill-effects of the game. The move comes
close on the heels of the Centre asking internet
companies to block links leading to the game.
With no jurisdiction to control sites that provide access
to this challenge—it is popular even on social media
platforms—the Department of Women and Child
Development has decided to take the awareness route
to prevent children and teenagers from falling prey to
the game. The Department is expected to reach out
to parents and teachers among other stakeholders.
The secret game
Blue Whale Challenge, a global online challenge
is derived from the beached whales phenomenon:
where whales dehydrate themselves on the
beach and eventually die
The online game involves the participant
performing 50 tasks on a given day. The last
task is to commit suicide
The tasks range from cutting one's skin to
watching disturbing videos
Each task is expected to be a secret
No participant, once committed is allowed to
leave the challenge
Reports say that the game first started in Russia
and has now become a global phenomenon
The game has already claimed lives in Russia,
Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, China, Columbia,
Georgia etc.
Be Job-Creators rather than Job-Seekers: President to Youth
The present problem of unemployment can only be
solved when more youngsters aspire to become job
creators rather than be content with finding a job, said
Chief Guest, Sri K. Ravi, President, FKCCI chairing a
two-day Workshop on Entrepreneurship & Small
Business Development organized by Karnataka Arya
Vysya Mahasabha with PETHAT team on behalf of
NIESBUD (The National Institute of Entrepreneurship
and Small Business Development under Ministry
of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, GOI) at
Sir MV Auditorium on August 4-5.
Addressing the young participants, Ravi said
“Entrepreneurship is an idea, an entrepreneur is an
ideator, and ending unemployment is the ideal,” and
said while there are many hurdles to cross and
The corporate and business class would see the
benefits accruing from GST only in the long run and
we will have to tide over the teething troubles till then
with patience till it settles down, Sri K. Ravi,
President, FKCCI observed, at the one-day Seminar
on Post-Impact of GST on Indian Economy/Business
held at Sir MV Auditorium on August 18 chaired by
Chief Guest, Dr. Parthasarathi Shome, Chairman,
ITRAF & Former Chairman (Minister of State rank),
Tax Administration Reform Commission, GoI.
“GST is expected to bring greater transparency,
improve compliance levels and create a common
playing field for businesses by amalgamating a host
of central and local taxes. It would change the current
tax regime of production-based taxation to a
consumption-based system. There is no doubt that
the corporate and the business community would
benefit once GST settles down. It is expected that the
consumer would also reap the benefits of the new tax
regime, once the corporates have transitioned
completely to the new tax structure and start to pass
on the benefits to the end user,” Sri Ravi said, adding
that a mega policy change of such a huge nature is
sure to be riddled with teething troubles. Some of the
taxpayers have also identified the difficulties of GST
implementation which could be a cause for worry for
some industries. Pointing out that the FKCCI has
consistently supported GST through the years,
working with State and Central Governments on its
shape it has played a big role in its successful rollout by
holding more then150 GST Workshops across the
State while also organizing GST Helpdesks for the
benefit of industry. He also thanked the Commercial
Taxes Dept and Central Taxes & Customs Department
for setting up Helpdesk on GST at FKCCI premises.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Parthasarathi
Shome, Chairman, ITRAF & Former Chairman
(Minister of State rank), Tax Administration Reform
Commission, GoI informed that the input tax credit
will be available on all inputs either of goods or
services, otherwise the purpose of easing out
cascading may affect the tax reform. He also
mentioned that exemption and asking for reduction of
tax rate which were worked out taking into aspect the
revenue neutrality, may not be feasible and instead
the taxpayers have to ask for improvement in law,
widening the tax bill and also prior tax payers
services, in the days to come.
Addressing the participants, Sri Ritvik Pandey, IAS,
Commissioner of Commercial Taxes in his address
Skill development in Industry 4.0 critical for India: K. Ravi, President, FKCCI
For India to capture a larger share of the ‘industrial
revolution 4.0’ it would require investment in highquality
skills related to applied science and technology,
engineering, quantitative and social analysis, design
and product development, said Sri K. Ravi, President,
FKCCI, while taking part as a Panellist in a Panel
Discussion on Role of Technical Institutions in
Making India Industry 4.0 Ready, convened as part of
the two-day Conference on ‘Industry 4.0: Engineering
the Interface with Real World’ by the Indian
Technology Conference at NIMHANS Convention
Centre on August 10-11. The discussion was chaired
by Dr. S.S. Iyengar, FIEEE, Rider Professor & Director,
School of Computing & Information Sciences, Florida
International University, Florida, USA.
ABemoaning the quality of teaching required for
inculcating Industrialisation 4.0, Sri Ravi called for
four critical interventions viz. involving the private
sector; finding innovative ways to finance the
development of advanced curriculum; integration
with industrial and applied training; and developing a
sustainable pool of next-gen teachers and trainers.
Acknowledging that the Government has made a
good start with the Make in India and Skill India
programmes, the FKCCI President explained why
skill development in Industry 4.0 is critical for India,
asserting that adoption of Industry 4.0 will result in
elimination of lower skilled jobs through automation
and the increase in productivity could result in an
overall reduction in the number of jobs available. With
the increased automation levels, Industry 4.0 will
result in shifting of key value adding activities back to
the developed economies which will result in further
reduction of jobs in the low cost manufacturing
countries. Given high dependence on low skill labour
in India, Industry 4.0 will have a big impact, unless we
make skilling Indians a reality. “The next generation
manufacturing Industry 4.0 can be won through
technology, innovation and skill development and
educational institutions play a pivotal for the success
of Industry 4.0 in India,” he summed up.
The experts participating in the Panel discussion
covered a range of issues viz. academic Initiatives from
a global perspective to meet Industry 4.0 challenges;
accelerated learning and development strategies and
Online Learning through MOOCs; professional bodies’
perspectives - Challenges and Opportunities for SME
sector in Industry 4.0 Scenario and Expectations from
AcademicInstitutions;Industry4.0-aBosch Experience;
modernization of Factories, Investments and Bankers’
perspectives on long term and medium term financing;
and challenges for Indian Higher Education.
Lessons from the Infosys Fiasco - I
D. Muralidhar, Past President, FKCCI
The dust is settling down on the rumblings at India’s most well known
IT behemoth, Infosys. This is clear from the fact that it is moving away
from the glare of the print media and the TV media. Within the
organization, it seems to be mercifully business as usual. But for all of
us Bengaloreans who have grown up hearing the hoary success story
of Infosys and how it captured the imagination of the country, the very
public squabble was quite disappointing and embarrassing.
The story of Infosys is the story of new and liberalised India. The
humble beginnings of the company, its founder’s middle class
background and the humongous success they achieved which also
created wealth to the employees and investors is a part of the much
celebrated folklore of the Indian IT industry. The other notable
players like TCS and Wipro of the day grew from a different stock and
never received such attention, recognition and acclaim. Somehow
the story of Infosys became a preferred topic for discussion and
inspired many technocrats and wannabe entrepreneurs to look at
India as a possible choice for setting up enterprises, especially in the
field of information technology.
Infosys was undoubtedly one of the anchor industries for the fast
growth of IT and related business in Bengaluru. The spin-off from
Infosys’ success rubbed off on other businesses and the world
started to take Indian businesses seriously. It's difficult to quantify
the feel-good factor associated with this phenomenon, own
experience being just a testimony. The other businesses like
manufacturing which suffered from a inherent "made in India"
disadvantage, suddenly saw a change in the perception of
international trading community, about the capabilities of Indian
products and services. The impact got amplified with other various
changes in the Indian milieu, but the benefit of initial torque belongs
to these pioneering IT businesses
Infosys today is a 10 billion dollar company with more than two lac
employees located in many parts of the world. The founders led by
Narayana Murthy managed the business till 2014 and handed over
the reins to a professional board of management. During their time,
the promoters ran the company with impeccable quality of corporate
governance and transparency. Normally, it's a huge challenge for
any fast growing organisation to ramp up internal systems without
sacrificing the effective founding principles and governance, but
Infosys with its promoters-driven management never lost sight
of these needs and kept raising the bar of corporate governance.
The Karnataka government is
planning an Electric Vehicle and
Energy Storage Policy with the aim
of making Bengaluru the electric
vehicle capital of the country. With
this Karnataka will be the first State
in the country to have such an
exclusive policy. This announcement,
by the Government of Karnataka,
assumed significance immediately
after the State-run Energy Efficiency
Service Ltd’s (EESL) tender for
procuring 10,000 electric cards and
4,000 chargers for coal, mines,
power and new and renewable
energy ministries in Government of
India as well as providing them on
rent to other departments in the
