School Speech Day
Good morning to our Guest-of-Honour, Dr Teng Teck-Hou, Research Fellow at the Fujitsu-SMU Urban Computing and
Engineering Corporate Lab and from the Mayflower class of 1994, Mr Sum Ah Lam, Chairman of the School Advisory
Committee, Mr Tan Yap Kin, Superintendent, South 1 Cluster, SAC members, fellow Principals and Vice-Principals,
distinguished guests, parents, alumni members, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to Mayflower Secondary School on
the occasion of our 36th anniversary!
2016 was a good year for the school and I want to start today’s address with a short video about our alumni that was
completed last year.
I hope you enjoyed the video! While the alumni were from different era of the school, they spoke about one common
thing – Mighty in Thought and Deed. For Paige, it was the striving for excellence in all that she did, for Audrey, it was
aiming high and having the never-say-die attitude and for Loic, it was trying something he had never done before.
Supporting them through their different attempts to be Mighty in Thought and Deed was the nurturing environment
of teachers, peers, parents and school community.
This morning, I want to pay tribute to that supportive community before I share with you the various achievements of
our students as they lived the Mayflower tradition of being mighty in thought and deed.
At the heart of this supportive community is the staff members of the school. The ones who encourage, correct,
challenge and even scold, all to ensure that our students do not give up or settle for less than their best. I am proud to
lead this group of dedicated, creative and caring educators who give of their best to their students. Of course, it is one
thing to encourage students to be mighty in thought and deed but they have gone beyond that to ensure that they, too,
strive for excellence in their craft and their service.
Mr Mahmood Bin Suhaimi, our Operations
Support staff, was presented with the MOE
Service Excellence Award in recognition of his
exemplary service to the school. Mr Tan Kok
Meng was recognized as an Associate of the
Academy of Singapore Teachers for his valuable
contribution to the professional development
of the fraternity. In addition, Mayflower staff
were recognized by MOE in their innovation
efforts garnering one Silver, one Bronze and
one Commendation Award at the MOE Innergy
Awards 2016. The projects ranged from
innovations in work processes to teaching and
learning including the use of argumentation in
Science and the initiative to have closer dialogue
with primary schools to understand how we can
better support our Secondary 1s. We are proud
of the teams who have been presented with the
awards as well as many others among staff who
quietly go about their innovation efforts in order
to better serve our students and their learning.
Rounding this supportive community are the SAC, alumni and
community partners who believe in Mayflowerians. Your support
and partnership have meant a lot to our students because it has
provided not just tangible resources but also expanded learning
opportunities for them. Indeed, your support is a tangible
expression of the belief that the community has for our students
and the challenge for them to be mighty in thought and deed.
This morning, Mrs Florence Lee and Mdm Karina Tan, have been
recognized by the Ministry with the Service to Education Award.
Together with the other SAC members, both have played a pivotal
role in strengthening the support given to staff and students of
Mayflower. Their commitment to the school can be seen in the
time and financial support generously provided to meet the
needs of students. Their wisdom, insights and network have
enlarged the capacity of the school to better serve our students.
It is in this supportive network that our students find the space to
grow and excel – to be mighty in thought and deed. Let me share
with you snippets of their achievements.
Another crucial part of this supportive
community are the parents of current and past
students. I would also like to express my gratitude
to the parents who have stood with us in our
programmes and supported us in our desire to
fulfil the Mayflower Promise for every student.
Your understanding, support and contributions
have made our journey in 2016 much easier.
My special thanks go to members of the Parents
Support Group who have provided great support
to the school and especially to our students.
Cognitive Development
In the area of cognitive development, we are glad that
100% of our Normal Technical students are eligible for
the three ITE colleges and we have improved the mean
aggregate of English, Mathematics plus two best subjects
to a mean score of 9.4. The improvement has provided
greater access to competitive ITE courses for our NT
students and we are very glad to see that they are able to
pursue their course of choice armed with the values and
attitudes honed through the time in Mayflower.
For our Normal Academic students, 98.8% of them
are eligible for progression to Secondary Five, Higher
NITEC courses in ITE and the Polytechnic Foundation
Programme. We are especially delighted that 17% of
our NA students are eligible for the highly competitive
Polytechnic Foundation Programme which allows them
to get a head start in one of the five Polytechnics. This
is a programme targeted at the top 10% of the national
NA cohort taking the examinations and we are proud
that many more Mayflowerians are able to access this
programme.
Physical development
In the area of physical development, we are happy
to report our students’ achievement in the National
Schools Games. We are proud of all our sports teams
as they fought valiantly and gave of their best in victory
or defeat. Our Basketball B girls achieved 4th placing in
the South Zone Championships while our Table-tennis
B Girls, C Boys and C Girls were placed 3rd and B Boys
was placed 4th. Our bowling B Boys, C Boys and C Girls
clinched 5th placing overall in the National Inter-School
Championships. Not to be outdone, our taekwondo boys
and girls clinched 6 Gold, 5 Silver and 13 Bronze medals
in the National Inter-School Championships and B Girls
emerged overall 4th in Poomsae and B Girls and B Boys
emerged overall 3rd in Kyorugi or sparring. In addition,
at the 20th Asian Cities Taekwondo Championships,
Nichelle Tan from 3 Formidable clinched a Gold Medal for
Singapore in Kyorugi.
In terms of our O-level performance, we are happy
to report that 97% of our Express students and 70%
of our Normal Academic students are eligible for the
Polytechnics. The figures for eligibility to the Junior
Colleges is sustained at 70% for the Express students.
In terms of mean aggregate points, the school has seen
improvements in both L1R5 and L1R4 and this bodes well
for the students as they now have greater access to JCs
and courses in the five Polytechnics. The encouragement
from the results inspires the staff members to put in more
effort to help our students realize their dreams this year.
In addition to examination results, we are happy to
report that Mayflowerians were awarded 2 Gold and 6
Bronze medals at the Singapore and Asian Mathematics
Olympiad, 4 Silver and 7 Bronze medals at the Singapore
Math Kangaroo Competition, 5 Distinction, 7 Merit and
8 Credit Awards at the University of New South Wales
Global International Competitions and Assessments for
Schools.
In the area of oratorical and debate competitions, our
students have signalled the growing strength of the
communication tradition in the school. Our debate
team beat more illustrious opponents like Hwa Chong
International and St Patrick’s School at the Julia Gabriels
Debating Competition. Justine Light of 4 Integrity clinched
the 1st runner up position in the ACJC Orator’s Trophy and
was selected as one of three emcees for the SYF Opening
Ceremony in the Esplanade.
Aesthetics development
2016 was a hiatus year for the Singapore Youth Festival
Arts Presentation for secondary schools. However,
Mayflowerians continued to demonstrate their abilities
and creativity on different platforms. 2016 saw the
staging of the school musical Bump(ed) at the Capitol
Theatre. This was a special production as students
from the Normal Academic stream were involved in the
acting, choreography, singing, stage management and
organization of this showcase. Of course, they had a lot
of support from staff but it was wonderful to see the joy
of learning on the faces of the students involved and the
audience who came to watch the two shows.
In recognition of the excellence of our performing arts
groups, they were invited to perform at public venues
in 2016. The Chinese Orchestra performed at the Asian
Civilizations Museum while the Chinese and Malay
Dancers took part in Chingay 2016. The Chinese Orchestra
and Modern Dancers were also invited to perform at the
SYF Opening Ceremony in Esplanade and in November,
the MF Choir performed at the Esplanade Concert Hall as
part of the Esplanade Presents series. It was noteworthy
that the choir premiered a commissioned composition by
Professor Bernard Tan, a well-known local composer, at
the concert.
Social-moral development
Mayflowerians continue to be active contributors to
the community through our signature programme of
service learning. Through the service rendered to various
organizations like AWWA, Ang Mo Kio Family Service
Centre and Thye Hua Kwan Senior Citizens Activity
Centre, students were provided with opportunities to
demonstrate their empathy and care for the community
and the environment.
In November, we held our third ‘We Love Our Community’
carnival in partnership with Kebun Baru CC and Ang Mo
Kio Chinese Methodist Church. The carnival was held in
conjunction with the school’s Open House and served to
provide an avenue for seniors and low-income families
to enjoy a day of fun in the school. It was a tangible way
for students to develop a spirit of generosity for the
community.
Leadership development
In the Uniformed Groups, our Scouts clinched the Gold
award for the fifth consecutive year. This has led to the
troop being conferred the prestigious Frank Cooper Sands
Honours Pennant award. In addition, the National Cadet
Corp (Land) and National Police Cadet Corp were awarded
their first Gold award in the Inter-Unit Competitions while
The Boys’ Brigade clinched the Bronze award. Felicia Lim
of 4 Adventurous 2016 was awarded the prestigious SPF-
NPCC Badge in recognition of her leadership.
Our student councillors and CCA leaders continue to
amaze us with their initiative and resourcefulness.
In 2016, they planned and led in a number of school
events and we are proud to say that they have always
risen to the occasion to deliver engaging and meaningful
programmes for the school community.
Mighty in thought and deed
As you can see, Mayflowerians have continued the longstanding
tradition of being mighty in thought and deed.
I sure hope that their juniors sitting in this hall will use
their achievements as benchmarks to be surpassed in
2017. For Mayflower, why not you?
Craft & Technology
2017 was an eventful year for the C&T department, with Advanced Elective Modules (AEMs) and learning journeys
planned for students in the upper secondary, to make learning fun and authentic as we took it beyond the classrooms.
The C&T department also welcomed Mr Marcus Ho to the team!
Advanced Elective Module (AEM): Product Design at Ngee
Ann Poly
This year, our Sec 3 D&T students had the opportunity to delve into Product
Design via an AEM Programme conducted at Ngee Ann Polytechnic during
the June holidays. The session was made even more meaningful as it
focussed on product design for people with physical impairments.
Design &Technology (D & T) Awards 2017
Two of our Sec 4 D&T students’ works (2016) were shortlisted for the 2017 Design
& Technology Awards. Organised by the D&T Educators Society, the Awards
recognised Henry Ng’s and Lin Yiqiu’s works for their good design concepts. In
the end, Henry’s work was selected as one of the award winning entries under
the Creative Adaptation category. His product, called the Golden Monkey Key
Holder was designed especially for the elderly. The user-friendly design is meant
to make it easier for the elderly to keep their keys safe and within easy reach. It
also comes with a light feature for use in the dark and a buzzer for the elderly to
alert anyone nearby if help is needed.
Open Studios 2017 Art Exhibition
The MF Art Unit celebrated the aesthetical achievements of its Visual Art
students by holding an Art exhibition, the Open Studio, on 12 April 2017. A
plethora of artworks including photography, painting, illustration, sculpture,
collage and assemblage produced by students in 2016 and 2017 were
featured in the exhibition. The visitors were impressed by the rigour of the
programme, the technical competencies visible in the exhibits as well as the
profound themes selected by our students to work on. Needless to say, the
Art teachers and students were encouraged by the positive affirmation.
Advanced Elective Module (AEM): Science
in Bread Making @ Temasek Polytechnic
Our Sec 3EX/NA Food and Nutrition students
attended a 4-day intensive course, learning about the
science and art in bread making. The course was held
during the June holidays at Temasek Polytechnic. The
course covered the basics of bread making including
the function of key ingredients as well the sensory
applications in baking. It was an enriching course
for the students as the exposure gave them a better
understanding and appreciation of the technicalities
with regards to the baking of bread.
English Language &
Literature
The English Language and Literature department aims
to mould Mayflowerians to be Effective Speakers,
Creative Writers and Critical Thinkers through a holistic
language-learning approach.
ALP
This is the 2nd year of a three-year progressive Applied
Learning Programme (ALP) in Effective Communication
where students are given the opportunities to hone
their speaking and writing skills via various platforms to
be confident communicators. The ALP aims to develop
effective communication skills within students whereby
they are encouraged to express their ideas and opinions
clearly and effectively taking into consideration the
Purpose, Audience and Context.
The Secondary 1 students underwent Speech and Drama
Programme in Term 2 over 8 sessions whereby drama
elements and stage presentations were explored . During
the course of the programme, students tapped on their
creativity to craft and flesh out scripts in teacher-led
lessons, and learnt stage directions and masterful use of
voice to produce an entertaining skit. The programme
ended with a big bang with the students staging their
skits excitedly during the ALP Showcase session.
Mayflower secondary school 14
yearbook 2017

On the other hand, the Secondary 2 students participated enthusiastically in Journalism and Broadcast programme
that spanned over 5 sessions in Semester 2. With the objective to develop students to be confident communicators,
especially in the context of Journalism and Broadcast, the training sessions were truly proof of what teamwork, effort and
training can do to help students to become confident presenters. The trainings culminated to an experiential learning
and learning journey to related organisations to further stimulate the students in their learning. The programme was
definitely welcomed by the students as they found many exciting moments to collaborate with each other to complete
their projects. The group presentations best captured their journey of discovery of creative writing, news reporting
and even photojournalism. Such opportunities more importantly helped to spot our talent. Great job, students!
Mayflower secondary school 15
Literature
On top of ALP, the department creates other platforms too to bring out the best in our students. The Secondary 1
Express students showcased their projects based on their Literature set text The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas during the
Literature Showcase in July. It was an engaging and interactive session whereby students were urged to pose questions
to the presenters and even wrote mini reflections and words of encouragement for their friends. There was a variety of
mixed media products presented that demonstrated their interpretation and understanding of the novel. The students
had great fun recreating dramatic and significant moments from the text through 3-dimensional models, dioramas,
posters, comic strips, clever arrangements of newspaper clippings, role-plays, video clips, and even a treasure hunt.
From their research and group presentations, it was evident that there was much collaboration and peer learning.
The gallery walk conducted at the library were attended by the Secondary 1 Express and Normal (Academic) classes
and their reflections showed that they have learnt how to make insightful connections between the novel and the
contemporary world issues.
In July, six students from Secondary 3 Diligent participated in the Upper Secondary Set Text Debate, National Schools
Literature Festival 2017. As the proposition team, they defended the motion ‘This house believes that Ying-Ying suffered
the greatest tragedy of all the four mothers’ based on the GCE ‘O’ Levels Literature set text The Joy Luck Club. Although
the students did not win the debate, their experience allowed them to hone valuable skills.
We hope all our students had a great year with us as much as we had with them!
Humanities
Department Vision:
Humanities students and staff are lifelong learners with a global perspective.
At Mayflower Secondary (MF), the humanities educators strive to encourage students to develop knowledge, respect
for and understanding of different perspectives, values and attitudes and an appreciation of the complex interactions
and interdependence of individuals, societies, and their environments. With the development of the relevant skill
sets, we hope to instil in our students a love for the humanities and a desire to be proactive global citizens with a deep
connection and love for his/her country.
This year we delved into collaborative inquiry that required teachers to reflect and study pressing instructional
problems. Teachers poured over students’ work and collected evidences of student learning and the lack thereof to
pinpoint areas of concern and explored ways to overcome these challenges.
The MF Social Studies Unit embarked on the pilot programme for the launch of the Student Learning Space (online
portal developed by MOE) to trial resources and platforms to promote self-directed and collaborative learning by
harnessing the use of ICT. We worked with CPDD to trial lessons. It was a mutually beneficial partnership as our teachers
benefitted from the support provided by CPDD while we provided invaluable feedback to aid in the implementation of
lessons for SLS.
The Humanities department continued to proactively infuse AfL
strategies as well as explore the range of Thinking Routines used
in our classrooms.
KEY PROGRAMS/ Competitions
Geographical (GI) /Historical (HI) /Social Studies Issue
Investigations (II) – With Inquiry based learning as the cornerstone,
students of all levels embarked on GI involving fieldwork at various
places in Singapore. Lower Secondary students also worked on
historical sources to make sense and form conclusions relating to
Singapore history. Our Secondary 3 students and all NT students,
embarked on various projects to better understand current societal
issues.
Inter-School Philosophy Dialogue at Raffles
Institution – This is the third year our students
have participated in this event. This year, the
theme was “Philosophy and the Arts”. The smallgroup
discussions provided our students with a
chance to deploy their critical thinking skills,
analytical prowess and verbal presentation skills
as they shared their thoughts and opinions with
their peers.
PROVE IT! Competition
Selected students took part in this inter-school
challenge that examined their ability to test
for reliable information. Students found the
experience both fun and enriching.
MOE History Challenge
This year, 4 students took part in the inaugural
MOE History Challenge, where they were
tested on their historical knowledge. Students
also had the opportunity to attend a lecture
by a NTU History Professor on the History of
Singapore and gain much insight into history
and historiography.
Sharing at Redesigning Pedagogy Conference
Two of our teachers also shared at the
Redesigning Pedagogy Conference organised by
NIE. Ms Elizabeth Phua shared about creating
Historical Empathy in a Secondary 2 Normal
Academic Classroom through the use of sources
and routines such as Tug-of-War.
Mathematics
Our Mayflower Mathematics team aspires to rub off their passion for this intriguing subject to their students, thus
nurturing them to be avid problem solvers who are keen to take on any challenge and persevere through in finding the
solution and enjoying the process. We aim to mould students to see Mathematics beyond its position as a vital option
for post-secondary education and as a language of logic that guides them in their daily lives. We believe that every child
matters and continuously seek ways to engage each student in teaching and learning.
Professional Development
For this to succeed, the teachers have to continuously engage in lifelong learning and constantly sharpen and hone
their skills. This is done via weekly timetabled sessions where teachers come together to develop lesson packages and
have rich discussions to learn from one another’s experiences and knowledge. These sessions ensure that standardised
resources are developed to benefit our students homogeneously while building good camaraderie amongst the teachers.
Our Senior Teacher, Mrs Quek, conducts regular sessions to nurture the teachers in her signature area of Mathematical
Modelling. Two of our teachers, Ms Shen Sirui and Mr Chan Ho Lun, were selected to present their research at the
“Redesigning Pedagogy International Conference 2017” organised by the National Institute of Education.
Competitions
Participating in competitions is a key success ingredient for our students. This year our students took part in a variety
of competitions and fared very well with the exceptional guidance from our teachers. Some of the accolades include:
• Singapore Math Kangaroo Contest – 8 Silver and 14 Bronze Awards
• Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad – 2 Bronze Awards
• American Math Competition - Participation Awards
Physical Education & Music
MUSIC
The General Music Programme (GMP) consists of an array of activities and learning
modules. Both Sec 1 and 2 students developed dance skills at the beginning of the
year and this culminated in an Inter-Class Competition. We are proud of the students
who performed in front of the huge audience, showing their determination and
developing confidence in public performance.
Sec 2 students also explored how dance and art could help with their creation of
musical compositions. They learnt about common concepts between these 3 art
forms, how they provide different perspectives and inspiration for their musical
compositions. Through the availability of technology, students were able to create
many credible musical works.
In the first semester of the year, students from the General Music Programme participated in the different activities
organized for this year’s Singapore Youth Festival. Roshan Emmanuel Mano (Sec. 2A) performed his original composition
titled “Family” at the Esplanade. He was accompanied by Faustina Lim (Sec. 2A) and Samuel Tan (Sec. 1I).
Darryl Kwek (S2F), Song Jiawei, Joy Lim and Zhang Yilin submitted drawings for the SYF motif competition. Their drawings
were inspired by the Bunt’s song “Young hearts”.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
In our efforts to engage a new generation of IT savvy students,
the PE Department introduced a new pedagogical platform called
Hybrid PE in Sec 1 classes. Using Google+, students posted videos
of themselves performing various tasks related to the game module
– football, floor ball and badminton. Students would comment on
their own performance as well as the performance of their peers.
Teachers also gave feedback to improve performance.
Our school Cross-Country was held on 17 May this year at Sengkang
Riverside Park, a new and fresh venue, where students were able to
enjoy the cross-country run close to nature as well as take part in
fringe activities on the hockey pitch.
The Sports Carnival cum National Day celebrations was held on 8
August. As a lead-up to the day, our department organised a series
of inter-class games for the various levels during PE lessons. These
included Powerball for the Sec 1s, Football for the Sec 2s, Basketball
for the Sec 3s and Frisbee for the Sec 4s. On the day
itself, the finals were held at different venues around
the school. Students and staff were involved in the
games and everyone had a great time.
For students who were overweight and severely
overweight, The REFRESH programme, run by the
Health Promotion Board, was eagerly welcomed by our
lower secondary students who needed more support.
Fun Nerf gun and archery sessions helped them to be
active and improve their well-being. These sessions
were conducted over 4 Wednesdays in Term 3.
To nurture Active Learners, Proficient Users anchored in values who embrace their ethnic identities
To develop Forward Thinkers with a global outlook and appreciation for unity in diversity
The Mother Tongue teachers of Mayflower Secondary School believe that language and culture is intertwined and the
former is essentially an expression of a culture. Hence all teachers work hard to create and maintain an immersive
environment for the learning of these languages in school.
Other than using Assessment for Learning (AfL) strategies to stretch students to their fullest potential, the department
has focussed on developing themselves professionally. Through the Collaborative Inquiry Projects, the CL Unit looked
at students’ work to ascertain areas for improvement in the learning of reading, oral and writing. The Malay Unit
worked on developing lesson packages for narrative writing techniques.
A plethora of activities such as aesthetic outings, enrichment programmes, and competitions were also organised to
better engage the students.
COMPETITIONS
Selected Sec 1 students took part in the 14th National Xin Lei Writing Creative Writing Competition and were stretched
in terms of having to think quickly and creatively on their feet. Four Sec 2 students participated in Zoombara 2017,
an Amazing Race-type game to promote the use of the Malay Language. The exposure gave the students a sense of
achievement and the chance to forge new friendships with students from other schools. Our first foray into the National
Sahibba Challenge, (Piala Cendekia Sahibba 2017), was a success for us as our team of four Sec 3 pupils clinched the 4th
place in the Zonal competition just missing the National Finals by a spot! As a newcomer in this competition, we look
forward to doing better in next year’s competition.
RECOGNITIONS & ACHIEVEMENTS
In recognition of Mr Naguib’s dedication and
commitment to learning of the Malay Language in the
classroom and beyond, we nominated him for the Arif
Budiman Malay Language Teachers’ Award 2017.
MOTHER TONGUE LANGUAGE (MTL) FORTNIGHT 2017
The 1st part of the Fortnight 2017 was held in conjunction
with the Lunar New Year celebration. This year, our
theme was “Common Language, Unique Talents”.
Students participated in various cultural activities to
better understand and appreciate the Mother Tongue
languages and the unique practices of the different
cultures.
● Chinese New Year Celebrations
To welcome the year of the Rooster, the department
engaged the staff and the students in the preparation
and celebration of the Lunar New Year.
In alignment with the Mayflower Promise, we hoped
to encourage students to have a generous spirit while
celebrating the Lunar New Year with our dear ones.
Hence, in addition to the concert planned, everyone
was involved in the preparation of Hampers of Love that
were donated to the senior citizens from Asian Women’s
Welfare Association (AWWA). The senior citizens were
also invited to our concert and while in school, were
cared for by students from the Info-Comm Club.
● Hands-on workshops
For the second part of our MT fortnight activities, held in July, the
department organised a Paper Art workshop for Sec 1NT & 1NA
students. Conducted by our own teachers, students learnt about the
meanings behind the different paper cuttings as they created their
own master pieces! The Sec 2 students delved into the meanings of
poems behind the paintings during fan painting sessions. Aside from
these programmes, students from all different levels and streams had
the opportunity to watch shows after curriculum hours.
● Culture Appreciation Learning Journeys
Our Sec 1 and 3 students embarked on a tour that comprised a Chinese
Tea Art appreciation session and a heritage tour to Kampong Lorong
Buangkok. The students learnt about the various types of Chinese
tea and their benefits as they sipped tea they brewed for themselves
and sampled eggs cooked in tea leaves. They learned interesting facts
about Singapore in Chinese at Kampong Lorong Buangkok.
● Speech and Drama Workshop
Sec 2 HCL students were immersed in a month long drama workshop.
They were exposed to the various aspects of drama, including script
writing, acting and stage performance. It culminated in a stage
performance with self-written scripts. The process was gruelling but
certainly meaningful as students demonstrated a higher level of
confidence resulting in better stage presentation.
● Malay Cultural Experience
The ML Unit’s theme was ‘Budaya Rentas Masa’ (A Culture
across Time) for the first instalment of the MTL Fortnight. The
activities involved the exploration of the Malay culture and its
evolution over time.
Sec 1 and 3 students went on a learning journey to visit the
‘Last Kampung Mosque in Singapore’, Masjid Petempatan
Melayu Sembawang. They learnt how a kampung house was
constructed without nails followed by a hands-on activity about
the Jawi script. The much-anticipated segment came at the
end: a feast of Nasi Ambeng, the traditional kampung cuisine of
white rice served with mouth-watering dishes. It was served in
the ‘makan berdamai’-style or ‘peaceful feast’.
During the March holidays, three of our Sec 4 pupils signed up
for a Journalism Camp jointly organized by Berita Harian and ITE
Central. The two day long camp saw the participants taking on
the roles of a reporter, graphic designer and photographer, after
which they had to produce a mock-up cover page of their own
newspaper! The girls had an exciting time as they experienced
the tight timelines of journalists and witnessed first-hand how
stories become front page news.
MOTHER TONGUE LANGUAGE FORTNIGHT CULTURAL CAMP
Held on 16th August 2017, the camp for Sec 3 students was
a 2.5-hour event with two segments: the cultural experience
stations and the Escape Room challenges. The popular and
much anticipated Escape Room challenges tested the students’
will power, patience and perseverance, as well as their ability to
think creatively of solutions.
● Hari Raya Concert
To celebrate and share in the festivities of Hari Raya Aidilfitri,
the ML Unit held a simple yet meaningful mini-concert to
showcase the spirit of Hari Raya. Performers donned traditional
costumes. A song and dance item and an original skit by our
students enlightened many about the festival.
Academic Excellence
The main objective of the Academic Excellence Committee is to build a vibrant academic culture and to implement
technology-based tools and initiatives in our classrooms.
As a post examinations activity, our Mind Map Workshops were held after SA1. Mind Mapping techniques were taught
to the Secondary 1s to equip them with the necessary skills to plan and visualize their ideas. For the first time, we
conducted this workshop using the IMindMap software, which allowed the students to experience how Mind Mapping
their subject topics would facilitate efficient learning and revision.
Camp Challenge was a programme introduced to further support our graduating students for the preparation for the
coming O/NA/NT National Examinations. Conducted in March and June, the academic activities promoted learning in
teams and provided chances for timely feedback through self- and peer-assessment for improvement. Students were
able to consult their respective subject teachers and sharpen their focus in the subjects.
Last but not least, our Night Study Programme for the graduating students was conducted during the weeks leading
up to the Common Test and Preliminary Examinations. It provided a conducive environment for our students to revise
their work, while teachers and Key Personnel provided the assistance to supervise the students as they strive to achieve
their best.
The other programmes that we have ran with success and in continuation to 2017 are:
● Remedial / Supplementary schedules
● Subject information sheets
● Post-Exam Marker’s feedback
● Academic Consultations
● Academic Counselling
● Principal’s List Board
School Safety
‘Think Safety, Act Safety’ – the safety motto of Mayflowerians.
School safety is the responsibility of each and every individual in Mayflower Secondary School. In Mayflower, we
believe that by constantly thinking about safety, we can act safely at all times as an organisation. The Safety Committee
encourages staff and students to be proactive about safety at all times - to stop, think and act.
Our plans and actions on safety in Mayflower are based on 4 principles:
1. Environment - To have a safe environment that supports learning is everyone’s responsibility.
2. Leadership - Staff are role models and will demonstrate their commitment to safety for all students.
3. Responsibility - Every staff and student is responsible for his/her own safety and actively watches out for others.
4. Priority - Safety is always the first priority.
2016 was an eventful year for the Safety Committee as we successfully carried out Exercise Rhinos on 22 February.
This was the most major evacuation exercise the school has been a part of since 2000. Exercise Rhinos was carried
out together with the School Emergency and Planning Organisation (SEMPO), Ang Mo Kio North Police Division and
SCDF. In addition to creating much excitement amongst the students and staff, Exercise Rhinos has greatly raised our
awareness and ensured that we are fully prepared and ready for an emergency. With the successful completion of
Exercise Rhinos, the school was certified SCDF ready. Looking forward, the Safety Committee is planning to carry out
evacuation exercises based on new scenarios, like evacuation to external holding areas.
The Safety Committee has also reviewed the various safety procedures and made a number of recommendations,
including coming up with Standard Operating Procedures for the various school activities and special rooms. The
team will also be conducting internal safety checks periodically in all special rooms to ensure standards are adhered
to. These reviews and activities are carried out in the spirit of continuous improvement to help us raise the safety
standards of the school and cultivate a safety mind-set in Mayflowerians.
Last but not least, the Safety Committee would like to welcome Mr. Abdul Haqim (SPE) to the team.
Effective Communication
Speech and Drama Programme
The Secondary 1 students went through a 10-week Speech and Drama Programme
in Term 2 where they learnt the basic elements of Speech and Drama. During the
course of the programme, students tapped on their creativity to craft and flesh out
scripts in teacher-led lessons, and learnt stage directions and masterful use of voice
with Act 3 to produce an entertaining skit. The programme ended with a big bang
with the students staging their skits excitedly during the ALP Showcase session.
Journalism and Broadcast Programme
A total of about 281 students participated enthusiastically in the 8 sessions of
Journalism and Broadcast programme. With the objective to develop students to
be confident communicators, especially in the context of Journalism and Broadcast,
the training sessions were truly proof of what teamwork, effort and training can
do to help students to become confident presenters. Experiential learning via a
series of Learnings Journeys to related organsiations
helped to further stimulate and spur the students
in their learning. The programme was definitely
welcomed by the students as they found many
exciting moments to collaborate with one another
in completing their group projects. The group
presentations best captured their journey of
discovery of feature writing, news reporting and
even radio deejay broadcasting. More importantly,
such opportunities helped to spot writing talents
amongst the students. Great job, secondary two!
Discipline
The Discipline Committee strives to inculcate responsible behaviour amongst all Mayflowerians with the belief that
purpose precedes practice. Hence, we aim to develop our students into individuals with self-discipline who will take
responsibility for their actions. In light of this philosophy, the rules and regulations of the school are designed to
promote the five school values.
Discipline in Mayflower is not about blind obedience. It is about ownership, right thinking and responsible behaviour.
Our role as teachers here is not custodial, but developmental, where every staff member is a disciplinarian and educator
of values. With this mindset, we hope to see “discipline as a bridge between goals and accomplishments” – Jim Rohm
When students break the rules, we want them to understand that they are to take ownership of their actions and take
the opportunity learn how to address the problems and correct their behaviour. By focusing on the problem and not
the students, we uphold the dignity of both the students and the affected parties, thus allowing restoration through
restitution.
The DC also initiated ‘Catching Mayflowerians Doing Good’. There are many good deeds and behaviour by our students
that often go unacknowledged. Hence, teachers are given ‘Good Conduct’ cards so that whenever they witness good or
improved behaviour, they may commend the students for their positive actions. This is done in the hope of encouraging
more of such behaviour. This has garnered positive feedback and we hope we can ‘catch’ more Mayflowerians doing
good!
This year, the discipline team has also reviewed and streamlined the processes for the use of handphones in school. In
line with our philosophy, we hope to cultivate responsible usage of handphones in students. In addition, the discipline
team will be reviewing the rules and consequences later in the year. We will also be conducting focus group sessions
with the students and the staff as a gesture of inclusivity and to gather their input on how the school may further
improve the discipline climate so as to facilitate effective teaching and learning values.
Examinations
The Examination Committee works with the primary objective of ensuring validity, reliability and fairness in all internal
and external examination processes.
Our members are:
Mr B Prem Anand
Mr Narayanan S/O Namasivayam
Mr Johnson Tay
Mr Lim Chee Wee
Mr Cheow Chee Siang Gabriel
Ms Teo Wan Ngee Allycia
Mr Mohamed Naguib Bin Ngadnan
Mrs Neo Peck Hoon
The team plans, implements and reviews internal and external examination processes in Mayflower. We plan and
deploy manpower for various examinations including Presiding and Chief Presiding Examiner/s for internal and external
examinations, Supervisors of Oral Examinations and Science Practical, and invigilators. Upon deploying key personnel,
we provide guidance and advice on roles and functions. We manage the process of candidature registration for national
examinations, working closely with Form teachers and Heads of Departments to ensure thoroughness and accuracy.
The Mayflower Secondary Assessment Policy strongly guides our internal assessment processes. The team plans the
schedule for each internal examination with a thorough look into details, ensuring the timely delivery of an accurate
examination timetable to the students and staff. We regulate the internal examination processes including printing of
paper, checking of examination papers, collection of scripts for marking, tracking of attendance/MCs and other general
routines. These are reviewed after each examination with refinements being constantly made.
The entire examination process is only complete upon the release of results. The examination committee looks into
the results of both internal and external examinations. The team prepares and interprets the global reports, which
supports the school management team including the school leaders in analysing the performance and designing the
appropriate intervention strategies.
Knowledge Management
To support quality decision-making in the school, the Knowledge Management Committee hopes to create an evidencebased
culture. This includes capturing, sharing, analysing data, and then using it to make informed decisions.
As with past years, the committee works closely with the school to maintain its data and making it accessible to our
staff. The information of our students are shared with the relevant staff, providing them with a holistic profile of their
students to support their teaching and learning in the classrooms.
The committee also ensures a smooth procedure facilitating the writing of our graduating students’ testimonials in
order for the testimonials to be true reflections of the students’ achievements in both academic and non-academic
areas in their years in Mayflower Secondary School.
The committee continues to strive to equip our staff with data analytical skills to deepen sound decision-making
process in the school.
Aesthetics
Our aims
The Aesthetics Committee is responsible for developing our students’ ability to appreciate beauty in the various
art forms. More importantly, we believe this is a powerful tool in developing students holistically. The aesthetics
programmes are designed to heighten students’ curiosity and passion for the arts. Students are provided with a variety
of platforms to achieve these goals of the committee.
Assembly programmes
To usher in the new-year for the school, Gindaiko came with their Japanese Daiko drums to bring good wishes and
blessings. In another programme, students were introduced to the idea of how Maths could be used to choreograph
dance.
Our ECG curriculum includes highlights such as:
(a) Parents’ Learning Festival
The annual Parents’ Learning Festival was held on the
18th of February. This year, we invited our alumni to
motivate and excite the students by highlighting the
career options and opportunities available to them. It
was of great privilege to have our Alumni, Mr. Daniel
Tan, an entrepreneur, Mr. Spencer Lam, a film-maker
and Mr. Lim Yee Wee, a youth worker, to share the
nature and scope of their work. In addition, they also
explained the skills and values necessary to perform
in their respective occupations. It was an engaging
session and our students and their parents gathered
insightful information during the interactions with
the alumni.
(b) Early Admissions Exercise Preparation
Our Secondary 4 Express and 5 Normal Academic students
attended an EAE talk conducted by Ngee Ann
Polytechnic. Thereafter, a smaller group of students
visited Ngee Ann Polytechnic for an EAE workshop,
where they received useful tips from lecturers who
head different Academic Schools on how EAE interviews
were conducted and how to best prepare
themselves for the admission exercise.
(d) Elective Modules and Advance Elective Modules
The 4-day Elective Modules (EMs) were introduced to our
Secondary 2 and 3 Normal Course Students to broaden their
learning experiences and to provide for their varied learning
needs and styles. EMs cover a range of industry niches from
Floral Arrangement to Smart Homes Application, opening up
possibilities that extend beyond secondary school education.
In addition, our Category A EMs allows for provision of credits
for advanced standing in related NITEC courses.
In addition, 3 groups of Secondary 3 students from Food and
Nutrition, Science and Design and Technology courses took
part in the Advanced Elective Modules (AEMs) during the
June holidays. AEMs are conducted in local polytechnics by
polytechnic instructors to enhance the learning experience of
our students through practice-oriented approaches that may
augment the specific concepts and skills in the O’ level curriculum.
(c) Work Attachment Programmes
At the end of 2016, our Secondary 4 Normal Academic
and Express students signed up for work attachment
programmes at Mount Alvernia Hospital
and Ji Mei Flower. At the nursing attachment, students
had the chance to attend lectures and shadow
nurses to better understand what the job entails. At
Ji Mei Flower, a group of our students handled the
sales request of christmas trees during the year-end
peak season, where they had the chance to interact
with customers from all walks of life. It was an enriching
experience for everyone, and it was definitely a
school vacation to remember!
Character And Citizenship
Education (CCE)
The goal of Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) is to inculcate values and develop competencies in our students
to help them grow as Mayflowerians who are good individuals and useful citizens.
The school’s CCE curriculum adopts a future-oriented focus through the use of life experiences and stories as contexts
for learning to prepare students for future responsibilities and equip them to make well-considered decisions. Students
learn the values of responsibility, respect, integrity, care and harmony, which are fundamental to nurturing good
Mayflowerian qualities through engagement in discussions, presentations, and other learning experiences. Various key
programmes such as NE, ECG, and VIA complement their learning as well.
The MF Character Award is given to students who demonstrated exemplary behaviour and good character in their daily
lives at MF. This award is presented to nominated students twice a year.
Publicity
The Publicity Committee plans,
implements, and evaluates publicity
processes and activities to promote
Mayflower Secondary as the choice
secondary school for students and
parents in the area.
This year, talks were held and booths
were set up in several schools to inform
Primary Six students about our school’s
DSA requirements, as well as provide
general information about our school’s
programmes. Publicity materials, such
as brochures, fact sheets and videos
are purposefully selected or crafted to
ensure alignment to school plans and
goals. This year, a second corporate video
was produced to capture the essence
and spirit of the school.
Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram were
used to capture memorable times and achievements of
our students and staff. It is used to promote our school
to the community at large but also to promote school
pride among our students. These include featuring
our top students at the GCE O Level and N Level
Examinations on our school website. And for the third
year, the Publicity Committee worked with the Student
Council Board to provide the necessary publicity for the
Student Council Presidential Elections using the social
media platforms.
The Publicity Committee is also in-charge of the annual
school magazine, The Mayflower Promise and has
worked on this year’s yearbook to capture key moments
vividly. This year, students were involved in choosing
the cover of the magazine by voting for their favourite
design.
The Committee has also revamp our school website to
improve features for easier navigationl.
On 25th November, the Publicity and National Education
Committees with the teachers in charge of the CCA
groups organised and held the Open House and Carnival.
The event held on the Saturday morning showcased the
school to a crowd of Primary Six students as well as their
parents who were interested in considering their child’s
secondary school education with us. The school also
invited the community in our vicinity to participate in
activities organised specially for them.
Partnership
Parent Support Group
2017 was definitely an engaging year for PSG members and parents.
The PSG came in strong force to actively recruit Sec 1 parents to get them to play a more positive role in their children’s
secondary school lives during the Sec 1 Meet-Parents-Session and CCA Exhibition in January.
Next was the annual PSG cum Alumni Appreciation Dinner, as a gesture of appreciation to our supportive parents and
alumni.
In February, parents enjoyed a half-day Parent Learning
Festival to find out more about the various academic
requirements at various stages of their child’s secondary
education. The festival also provided more information
on post-secondary options as well as career talks by
Alumni members to inspire our students to pursue their
passions.
The workshops, talks and handicraft activities have
drawn more parents than before. Badminton sessions
were also organised this year and families turned up in
full force to bond through the games.
The Drone Flying event attracted a good number of
families and all bought extra drones back to play with
their loved ones.
Staff Development
The Staff Development Committee builds up capacity of staff members in Mayflower Secondary School to learn, create
and contribute to the Mayflower Outcomes. The Committee also seeks to empower staff innovation that is aligned to
the MF Promise.
The Committee oversees the following staff development programmes in 2017:
a) Education Officers/ AEDs (T&L)
▪ Using the Collaborative Inquiry cycle, staff members work together in department Professional Learning
Teams (PLTs) to improve classroom instruction and student outcomes. Experimentation is key and findings
from the inquiry will be shared during the year-end Staff Learning Conference in November for staff members
to learn from one another.
▪ PLTs desiring to share experimental and research findings are also supported and given opportunities to use
outside school platforms like the Redesigning Pedagogy International Conference to share with other teachers
in the fraternity.
▪ The Staff Induction programme is conducted for Beginning Teachers and new staff members posted to the
school. The programme covers the School Philosophy and Directions, School Systems like Admin, Finance,
ICT, and Professional matters like Professional Ethos and Teachers Growth Model. The on-the-job segment
gives opportunities to new colleagues to work and learn on the ground with the more experienced colleagues
in the respective subject areas, form class and CCAs.
▪ Beginning Teachers undergo a customised in-house Skilful Teacher Enhanced Mentoring (STEM) programme
conducted by our own Lead Teacher and Senior Teachers. The 9-month long learning culminates in a final
design of learning that will be experimented and evaluated for improvement.
▪ Lead Teacher and Senior Teachers in the Staff Development Committee design a series of Milestone
Programme workshops aimed at equipping staff members with key skills and learning needed over the next
few years as part of the school’s strategic goals to provide an engaging school experience that grows futureready
students and to build an evidence-based culture that supports quality decisions in the school.
▪ In encouraging all teacher-leaders in Mayflower Secondary School to develop their expertise in signature
pedagogies, opportunities through reading, discussion and experimentation have been structured into
professional development sessions to gradually help teacher-leaders to choose, develop and propagate their
chosen signature pedagogies.
Staff Wellness
Lo-Hei
The Mayflower family ushered in the new lunar year with our
customary “Lo-Hei” & buffet lunch on 8 February. We were
delighted that our SAC members took time off to grace this
joyous occasion. This was indeed a great opportunity for all
staff to bond and mingle with one another while enjoying the
sumptuous spread of food.
Hari Raya Tea Party
Hari Raya Aidilfitri marks the end of the Islamic holy month of
Ramadan. We are grateful to be able to celebrate this festival
with our Muslim colleagues by indulging ourselves with a
gastronomic spread of Malay food ranging from satay, mee siam
and ‘kueh’. It was definitely an enjoyable ‘makan’ session!
Student Leadership
With the theme, “Leaders Within”, this year, the Student Leadership Committee aims to get student leaders to think
what they can do for the people around them.
Events
In Semester 1, we geared up by organising several events such as the Sec 1 Orientation, CCA Exhibition, SC Presidential
Election and Student Leaders Investiture. In Semester 2, the different groups of students leaders (Student Councillor,
Class Leaders, Arts Ambassadors and CCA Leaders) , all came together to make Teachers’ Day celebration another
memorable day for the teachers in Mayflower Secondary School. We ended the year with the CCA Leaders planning
Exposure on Community and Environment Issues
In alignment with the theme, “Leaders Within”, this year, we also
expose our student leaders to environmental and community
issues. This year, for the first time, some Student Councillors come
together to organise Earth Hour. During this week, students had
the opportunity to pen down what and how they can contribute
to save the Earth and the environment. Apart from that, we also
have groups of student leaders who went to Pulau Semakau to
better understand the issue of waste management Singapore
is facing now and in the future. It was also an opportunity for
the student leaders to fell in love with nature as they walk
through the mud and get upclose with the varied sea organisms
during the inter-tidal walk at Pulau Semakau. Another group of
student leaders also attended a Teens Conference where they
get to discuss community issues such as caring for migrant
workers, caring for people with disabilities and protecting the
environment.
With these platforms, the Student Leadership Committee hope
that student leaders will use these opportunity to hone their
leadership skills and will also continue to think what can they do
to as an active contributor to their society.
The Mayflower Chinese Dance Club is a dance troupe that consists of 40 passionate dancers. The club is part of the
school’s Aesthetics niche. Under the guidance of the dance instructor Ms Connie Ban, members of the Chinese Dance
are continually challenged to rise to great heights of strength, grace and artistic achievement.
Our dancers performed in many school events and functions, ranging from CCA Exhibition, Chinese New Year
celebrations, Speech & Prize Giving Day, MF Lunch Time Concerts, and MF Open House. These performances have
provided opportunities for our dancers to hone their skills while adding to the vibrant arts scene in the school.
The Chinese Dance Club performed in the ASEAN Schools Games 2017 Opening Ceremony in July, in which the dancers
performed the item, “The Day I Fell in Love” together with Peicai Secondary and Jurong West Primary. In the same
month, they also performed an item, themed “Red, Blue and White” (Racial Harmony) for Singapore Heart Foundation
Charity Cup Golf Tournament 2017. Through their passion and commitment, our dancers bravely go through their paces
to bring happiness and joy to the audience as they dance to the rhythm of life for each school and public performances.
In February, the club engaged in a Kin-ball SEP programme which the dancers not only outplay, outwit and out to have
fun but they also learnt to be cooperative and work as a team. In September, the dancers watched the musical play
“West Side Story” which is Inspired by Shakespeare’s tumultuous love story Romeo and Juliet in Grand Theatre at
Marina Bay Sands.
Under the rigorous training practices, multiple
opportunities to showcase their talents and other
activities to widen their horizon of arts, every dancer
from Chinese Dance Club develop their skills, leadership
and organising abilities. We hope our dancers become a
person with Zest for Life, a Curious Mind, and a Generous
Spirit.
At Mayflower Chinese Orchestra, we hope to instil an
appreciation and passion for music in all our members.
We seek to develop our members holistically by
equipping them with music skills, and developing
their ability to manage their time, plan and organise
activities. The leadership abilities of students are
also developed through a mentorship programme in
the CCA. Most importantly, we seek to instil in our
students a sense of empathy and compassion for
their peers and the community around us.
This year, MFCO was involved in the following
programmes.
School Performances
MFCO performed at this year’s CCA Exhibition with
our own Student Conductors, Ron Law and Sean
Choir
The Mayflower Secondary School Choir is a group of vibrant,
young people who share a common love in singing. The
aims are to provide opportunities to engage the community
through singing, to grow in the pursuit of choral excellence,
and to deepen the bonds shared through music-making.
Under the skilful baton of the choir conductor, Mrs Tay
Sze Chen since 2014, the choir has grown from strength to
strength. The Choir was awarded its second Certificate of
Distinction this year in the SYF Arts Presentation.
In November 2016, the Choir performed at the Esplanade
Concert Hall in the Limelight Series. The Choir embarked
on an overseas choral trip in Hong Kong, having a public
performance and school choral exchanges with two
schools.
In January this year, the Choir was also invited to perform
at the Guild in Concert @ National Gallery Singapore.
In February, the choir watched a performance by the
Philippines Madrigal Singers at the Esplanade.
The annual Inauguration Concert was held in April to
welcome the Secondary 1 new members and to provide
a platform for them to perform,
A rare opportunity came by our choir once again in June
2017. The Singapore Teachers Academy for the Arts
(STAR) invited our choir to do a professional recording
for them.
Apart from developing the vocal quality of our
members, various activities were organised to provide
opportunities for our members to develop friendship. In
March, a Choir Camp was organised and in July, Bubble
Soccer was organised to provide an opportunity for our
members to be engaged in sport activities.
With the combined effort of the student leaders,
conductors and the teachers, the choir will continue to
grow as a family that sings together
Our main item of 2017, of course, was the SYF Arts
Presentation. We began preparations and training for
our dance choreography almost a year ago. Our entry,
entitled “Semarak Warisan” was a celebration of the
Malay culture’s youth and evergreen quality through
the generations. Our dancers had the experience
of using traditional props such as the tepak sirih
and the gunungan, to augment their vibrant and
fast-paced choreography. Through rigorous training
and preparation as well as careful guidance from
our instructor, our Malay Dancers put up a stellar
performance on the day of their presentation, taking
say: “I initially joined Malay dance because I saw their
performances and it made me interested to learn
more about it. After joining, it helped me to gain more
knowledge about the Malay culture, values and the
different types of dances. It has really made a huge
impact in my life.”
Table Tennis
Table Tennis – a game that takes place on a hard table divided by a net.
The MF Table Tennis Team, however, is united by each individual’s love for this sport. Through rigorous training sessions
clear result of the team’s determination and passion, the MF table tennis team has once again achieved exceptional
results in this year’s South Zone Championships with all Four Divisions being placed among the Top Four Positions. The
Taekwondo
The Mayflower Taekwondo CCA aims to impart the art of self defense to
its members. It builds up the discipline and resilience of students through
rigorous training sessions that aim to challenge the students physical and
mental strength.
During the January recruitment drive, our members interacted with parents
and prospective Secondary One members, answering their queries and
promoting Taekwondo as sport that imparts the values of humbleness,
honesty, helpfulness and respect. They had put up a self-defense
demonstration that showcased the tough yet thoughtful nature of the sport.
With the guidance of our coaches – Mr Brian
Peh and Ms Evonne Kua and the leadership of
our CCA leaders – Lee Yee Tzien (3A) and Liew
Yu Heng Ryan (3A), the Mayflower Taekwondo
Team achieved an exceptional total of 5 Gold
Medals, 15 Silver Medals and 32 Bronze medals
in the 2017 National Inter-School Taekwondo
This effort secured 3 national titles for
Mayflower Secondary School! Namely, an
overall third placing for the B Division Boys Kyorugi Category, an overall 4th placing for the B Division Girls Kyorugi
category and an overall 4th placing for the C Division Girls Poomsae Category.
Football
The Mayflower Football Team, since its establishment in 2014, has steadily progressed both as an outlet for students to
develop a Zest for Life, as well as a Sports-Oriented platform for character development. We emphasise Excellence in
Character which is shown in the way we conduct trainings and organise the teams. Discipline in the team is of utmost
importance, regardless of talent. Team rules are enforced stringently. Only when students can adhere to a good level of
discipline can we then enrich their learning on the field with the support of our resident coach, Mr Nahar Daud.
Mr Nahar is a former S-league player, and has coached the country’s top teams. His inclusion to our setup has greatly
enhanced our standings and track record. At one point last year, the B Division has gone 7 friendly matches without
losing. For a budding team, this is very encouraging.
This year, Mayflower Football Team won the Ulu Pandan Futsal Tournament placing both 1st and 2nd. The C division
has shown great promise, and with a mindful eye on being disciplined and grounded, we will start to see Mayflower
Secondary School Football Team attain greater heights in this hugely popular sport.
Boys’ Brigade
The Boys’ Brigade in Mayflower Secondary was formed in 2005 and was named
as 51st company in Singapore. It is sponsored by AMK Bethesda Hall.
Our aim is to mould our boys to be responsible Men in the Family, the Community,
the Nation and the World. We achieve this by providing a fun, meaningful and
based on Christian Education and Discipline, and guided by adult Christian
leaders as Officers.
The emphasis is also on leadership development, team building, life skills,
adventure activities and community service.
courses such as SANA and the Civil Defence Course, our boys acquired problem
solving skills and basic fire-fighting skills which will serve them well in the future.
In addition, our boys organised a Parents’ Appreciation Night during the June
holidays to honour their parents and celebrate the achievements of the boys.
Scouts
The Mayflower Scout Troop has kept its word! We promised to scale greater heights and we have. After months of hard
work, dedicated participation in events and almost continuous testing, our Scouts have garnered the Gold award yet
again! This has led to the troop being awarded the prestigious Frank Cooper Sands Honours Pennant award!
We are extremely proud and happy with this achievement and would like to wholeheartedly thank all stakeholders –
parents, Rover scouts, scouts, teachers and school leaders for their unstinting support all the while.
Another noteworthy mention is Foo Yang De and Chia Kang Xu receiving the Istana Hospitality Award for their services
at 4 Istana events this year. Assistant Chief Commissioner (South) Antong Sharuddin presented the award to them at
the Istana grounds in July.
We would also like to congratulate Chia kang Xu, Foo Yang De, Si Thu Soe, Tan Han Sheng and Yee Jun Hyeok Bryan for
The Mayflower Enterprise Club has a well-integrated cocurricular
programme that promotes life-skills, character
building, and leadership qualities. At the end of four years,
we hope to see our students as creative individuals who are
Our School Song
Mayflower our dearest school
Together aspire together we strive;
From thee we derive
The knowledge and the dignity
To thee we give our love and loyalty.
Mayflower, Mayflower,
To fame and glory, to fame and glory;
Mayflower, Mayflower,
We serve and honour our school and country.
Be mighty in thought and deed
Be modest to all men no matter what creed;
Onward we'll march
with kindred and spirit aglow
And that is our motto for a better tomorrow.
