For the past 10 years Natex has
pursued a strategy of building
relationships with key organisations
like the police, Federated Farmers and
DOC, and playing the long game to
protect hunters’ social licence.
Natex has represented hunters
(and NZDA in particular) as “good
citizens” with a legitimate stake in
the outdoors, and made rational,
constructive contributions to policy
development and decisionmaking on
issues affecting firearm possession,
access, animal welfare etc. NZDA is
“in the tent” with all the major game
animal interests. NZDA members
have contributed, and continue to
contribute to, the operation of pest
controlprogrammes and development
of huts, tracks and other facilities.
We maintain a healthy dialogue with
other stakeholders and even if we
don’t always agree, it’s a lot better
than being out in the cold.
These days, when NZDA takes
a firm stand on the real issues, we
find that more often than not, other
organisations support us too. They
find there is more mileage to be had
through collaboration (and making
the occasional compromise), rather
than the suspicion and automatic
opposition of a past era. This was
clearly evident at Conference, with
representatives from several of our
key fellow stakeholders present and
delivering presentations that were
well received (see conference report,
page 6).
NZDA is doing more business.
In military terms we are in a phase
of “forward engagement”. We are
not sitting in defensive positions.
With key allies we are retaining
and enhancing and creating
opportunities.
Lastly, we learned just as this issue
was going to press that the Hon Peter
Dunne will not be seeking re-election
this year and is retiring from politics.
During his many years in parliament
Mr Dunne (most significantly from
our viewpoint as Associate Miniser of
Conservation) has consistently been
a friend of hunters and a staunch
supporter of outdoor recreation. In
particular, he was responsible for
setting up the lengthy process that
began in 2004 and culminated in
2013 with the passing of the Game
Animal Council Act. We wish him all
the best in his next endeavours.
