Children enjoyed the challenge of an old fashioned hay bale maze at the Under Eights morning, Kulpi State School. Kulpi State School always rings with children’s laughter however there were plenty of additional voices when it recently hosted an Under Eight’s morning for local schools. More than one hundred students aged under eight came with parents and staff from the Kaimkillenbun, Quinalow, and Jondaryan schools, as well as special tiny visitors from Maclagan Kindy. Principal Rosita Lever said local schools all contributed to the cluster by hosting sporting events throughout the year, and that Kulpi wanted to contribute too. “Under Eights activities celebrate the special qualities of young children and their delight in learning through play,” she said. “We were thrilled with the support from schools with everyone participating enthusiastically.” There were many traditional activities for children, including face painting, bubbles and painting, however Kulpi staff organised some special surprises too. A hay bale maze was constructed with the help of local farmer Jono Biggar, and 115 bales provided a challenge for the children to work their way through. Mrs Lever said that because of the success of the day that she planned to make it an annual event.. Mt Binga endurance ride Toowoomba Endurance Horse Riders Association has received sponsorship from Hutchinson Builders for their upcoming endurance ride at Mt Binga State Forest on October 7 and 8. Mr Rob Weymouth, Hutchinson Builders, said: “This year marks the 105th anniversary for Hutchinson Builders. "We consider ourselves a strong and enduring company, so to partner with a local sporting club to sponsor an event that is about endurance, resilience and strong partnerships, is a good match for us,” Mr Weymouth said. The endurance event will see horse and rider combinations compete in ride distances up to 80km over the weekend. Ken Gordon TEHRA president said, “We will be holding a 20km and a 40km ride on Saturday and a 40km and 80km ride on Sunday. Endurance is a great family sport, we expect up to 180 riders over the weekend, varying in age from five right through to people in their 70s. "We are a not-for-profit sporting group that runs entirely on volunteers. "We are extremely grateful to our ride sponsor Hutchinson Builders, without whose assistance our event would not be possible.” TEHRA is seeking volunteers who are interested in endurance horse riding to assist with the running of the ride, and always welcomes new club members. The club rides socially in the Toowoomba region as well as at endurance events and consists of long term endurance riders and new members who are learning the ropes. As strict biosecurity measures will be in place, all ride nominations must be made in advance. HIGHFIELDS PIONEER VILLAGE Miniature steam train and Model T bus rides This Wednesday and Sunday, from 10am to 2pm come and ride Myrtle May, the miniature steam train at the Highfields Pioneer Village. Tickets are tickets $3 child and $5 adult. The train runs on a 10¼ inch gauge circular track at the village with three passenger carriages and take up to 20 people at any one time. Or have a vintage bus ride on Henry, the Model T Ford bus, built in 1924 which can take 12 passengers at once. There is billy tea and damper, drinks and ice-blocks available and a sausage sizzle at lunch time. Join in the fun with a whip cracking school at 1pm or period costume photo shoot at 1.30pm. Reforms to regional media policy Member for Groom Dr John McVeigh has supported measures announced to support regional and small publishers and create local jobs. The new measures, which are in addition to the Government’s media reform package, and subject to its passage through the Parliament, include: • A $50 million Regional and Small Publishers Innovation fund • A Regional and Small Publishers cadetship program to support 200 cadetships ($8 million) and • Sixty regional journalism scholarships ($2.4 million over three years) The fund could allocate grants to programs and initiatives such as purchasing or upgrading equipment, software, training, development of apps and business activities to drive revenue and readership, all of which would help small regional publishers to expand their businesses and create more jobs. Funding grants will be capped at a maximum of $1 million a year for any media group. At least two-thirds of funding must go to regional publishers and not less than 25 per cent for non-regional publishers. Dr McVeigh said he had received representations from two local publishers in recent months in the lead up to the media reforms debate in Parliament. “They had some concerns about potential changes to the media landscape and how it would affect their business model,” Dr McVeigh said. “I recognise those concerns and I also value the service they provide to the smaller, regional communities around the region. "They are vital parts of the local media landscape. These new measures will be a welcome support for regional media organisations which are facing new challenges in the digital age,” he said. “Assisting small publishers and regional newspapers to innovate in the digital media environment will go a long way to maintaining these organisations and create more local jobs. The cadetship program is another great initiative which will boost employment opportunities through funding for more cadets in the regions. This program, together with funding for 60 regional journalism scholarships, will give regional Australians the opportunity to access journalism training that they haven’t had before. “The reforms are vital for the future viability of Australian media organisations and local jobs.
