Peacehaven revamp in time for carnival
The upgraded Peacehaven Botanic
Park at Highfields has opened just in
time for the 68th annual Toowoomba
Carnival of Flowers.
At the official opening of the improved
4.7 hectare park, Minister
for Local Government Mark Furner
said the Palaszczuk Government was
proud to help fund the upgrade.
“A grant of almost $313,000 was
provided for the project, which employed
15 people from the design
phase to completion of construction,”
Mr Furner said.
“This is another example of the
great work being done by the Palaszczuk
Government to provide employment
for people in regional centres
throughout Queensland.
“Since we were elected, 94,500
jobs have been created, the equivalent
of 100 new jobs every day since
January 2015.”
Mr Furner said the investment in
the Peacehaven Botanic Park enhanced
Toowoomba’s image as the
Garden City.
“This upgrade offers great benefits
for locals, who can come here all year
round, as well as tourists visiting the
area,” Mr Furner said.
“What makes this park special is
the nature play area and sensory garden,
the wide paths that ensure it is
accessible for people of all ages and
This is prostate cancer awareness month
One in five Queensland men
will be diagnosed with prostate
cancer by the age of 85.
Our dads, brothers, grandfathers,
partners and friends are at
risk.
Prostate cancer is the leading
cause of cancer among men in
Queensland, with around 4000
men diagnosed each year on average.
September is Prostate Cancer
Awareness Month and we’re
urging men to help raise awareness
of the disease and better understand
their risk to help detect
it early.
While five-year survival rates
for prostate cancer are drastically
improving and are at 94 per
cent, up from 64 per cent in the
1980s, there’s still no time for
complacency.
The cause of prostate cancer
is still not clear, and in the early
stages, prostate cancer often
doesn’t produce any symptoms.
However, we do know that the
risk of prostate cancer rises with
age and occurs mainly in men
abilities, and the lawns which will be
a great place for people to gather.”
Toowoomba Regional Council
Deputy Mayor Carol Taylor said the
Peacehaven Botanic Park upgrade
includes unique botanic referenced
play-art with elements designed and
constructed taking inspiration from
the local environment.
“The park’s upgrade makes this
piece of open-space an even greater
asset for the Highfields and broader
Toowoomba Regional community,”
Cr Taylor said.
“The Council is grateful to the
State Government for its contribution,
ever conscious of the generosity
of benefactor Stan Kuhl, and delighted
by the vision and hard work of the
Friends of Peacehaven Botanic Park.
“I expect this significant park will
become ever more popular as a location
for weddings and community
events with the new accessible nature
play area, backdrop of the beautiful
lake and views out to the Bunya
Mountains.”
Mr Furner said he was pleased the
Local Government Grant and Subsidies
Program was used to support
such a worthwhile project to help
boost jobs for regional Queensland
and support the Toowoomba Regional
Council to build local communities.
over 60 years.
Men with a family history
also have an increased risk of
developing the disease.
It’s crucial that men understand
their risk and let their GP
know if they have a family history
to receive the right advice
on the pros and cons of prostate
cancer testing.
Unfortunately, there is currently
no single, simple test to
detect prostate cancer.
The test most commonly used
to aid early detection of prostate
cancer is the prostate specific
antigen (PSA) blood test but
this test does not always reliably
identify the presence of prostate
cancer, or distinguish potentially
fatal cancers from benign tumours.
We recommend men speak
with their GP about what is right
for them, especially if they notice
body changes including
difficulty or pain in passing
urine, or blood in urine, and
any of these symptoms combined
with pain in the lower
back, upper thighs or pelvic region.
If men have questions or
concerns about prostate cancer,
they should visit their GP or call
Cancer Council’s 13 11 20 to access
information or confidential
CROWS NEST POLICE REPORT with Sgt GREG DAWES
Home security warning
CRIME: August 30 - An
unknown offender attempted
to gain entry into a property on
John Street, Crows Nest by removing
louvres at the rear of the
residence. No entry was gained.
What is concerning is that the
occupants of the address were
home at the time, so I implore
everyone to ensure their houses
are locked at all times, even if
you are inside.
Between August 30 and September
1, police attended a
property on Anduramba Road,
Crows Nest where an alleged
quantity of stolen property was
located. The male offender, 28,
was charged with four counts of
stealing, four counts of receiving
tainted property, two counts
of possessing tainted property,
one count of authority required
to possess explosives and one
count of disqualified driving.
The offender was charged
through the Toowoomba Watchhouse
and will be appearing before
the Toowoomba Magistrates
Court on September 27.
Between August 31 and September
7, unknown offenders
gained entry into the Crows Nest
Swimming Pool complex on
Curnow Street, Crows Nest. The
offenders damaged a water pump
on the property before leaving
the scene.
On September 7, a male 52,
was caught stealing items from
a property of the New England
Highway, Crows Nest. The offender
was issued a Notice to
Appear for an offence of enter
premises an commit an indictable
offence, and will be appearing
before the Toowoomba Magistrates
Court on October 26.
TRAFFIC: September 2
- A silver Mazda utility was intercepted
on the New England
Highway, Crows Nest. Checks
conducted revealed that the vehicle
was both unregistered and
uninsured. The male driver, 58,
was issued with traffic infringement
notices for the offences.
There were 23 traffic infringement
notices issued in the division
for the past fortnight.
Women encouraged to get out and get active
Women and girls of all ages
are being encouraged to get out
and get active with Toowoomba
Regional Council’s new Thrive
project.
To coincide with Women’s
Health Week, more than 200
free and low-cost activities are
being made available from September
through to May 2018 for
women and girls living in the
Toowoomba Region.
Deputy Mayor Carol Taylor
said the initiative was about empowering
women to have a go
at a range of fitness and outdoor
recreation activities they may
not have tried before.
“Research tells us more than
40 per cent of adult women in
Queensland are not achieving
the recommended 30 minutes
of moderate physical activity on
most days of the week,” she said.
“TRC secured additional funding
from the State Government
to provide more than 200 free or
low-cost options for women and
girls of all ages to get active.
“Toowoomba Regional Council
worked with the Queensland
Government to secure more than
$35,000 from the Government’s
Get Out, Get Active grant to provide
various fitness and outdoor
recreation programs specifically
christian comment
The value of a $300 dollar egg
A little while ago I decided that it would be
good for the kids and I if we had our own chooks.
Our first egg arrived and I have just calculated
the cost: One chook pen @ $148 plus freight
- $200, three chooks @ 1$6.50 each - $49.50, one
bag of mash - $18, one watering dish - $25. Total
cost $292.50
Result to date - one egg
It will take a long time to recoup the investment
made in our chooks. Most of my friends who have
chooks have said that keeping them is a lifestyle
not a financial decision.
For me investing in our chooks is about the long
term benefits. Three chooks at three eggs a day =
21 eggs a week. Optimistically. that’s a bit less
than $10 return a week and that’s assuming they
lay consistently each day. At that rate, it will take
me almost a year to repay my initial investment
and it is likely that it will take much longer.
for women and girls across the
Toowoomba region,” Deputy
Mayor Cr Taylor said.
The female-only classes
include yoga, hula hooping,
mindful walks, Zumba, Konga,
kickboxing and strength classes,
along with a range of outdoor
recreation opportunities including
bushwalking, mountain biking,
kayaking and archery tag.
TRC will be offering new
Women on Wheels workshops
to provide women with a comfortable
park environment where
they can build their knowledge,
skills, and confidence to ride
more,” Crr Taylor said.
Children will also be encouraged
to get active by chasing
kittens, dragons, fairies, dinosaurs
and aliens at Magical Park
digital fantasy lands across the
region during school holidays.
Minister for Sport Mick de
I know my investment in spending time with the
kids and them learning about how to care for animals
is priceless.
Although the initial financial cost may be high,
there will be ongoing rewards. I think $300 might
end up looking quite cheap.
There is a passage from James one of the NT
Merle Schilf celebrates her 90th birthday
An open house was held at Trinity
Lutheran Church Hall on August 27
to celebrate the 90th birthday of Merle
Schilf who is a resident of Salem
Lutheran Aged Care Facility.
Merle was joined by her five children,
their spouses, several of her
grandchildren and great grandchildren
for the occasion along with her
only brother Desmond, her sister-inlaw
Myrna and many of her nieces
and nephews, cousins and family
friends.
Merle was born at the family home
‘Cattle Gully’ Quinalow on August
16, 1927, fourth child to Christi and
Rhoda Kanowski.
She attended the local school at
Quinalow until grade seven and then
helped out on the family farm.
She married Kevin Schilf who was
employed at the Maclagan Butchery
in Aril 1948.
After many moves around
Queensland operating various butcheries,
the family once again settled
in Maclagan in 1972 and re-opened
the Maclagan Butchery which is still
being operated by members of the
Schilf family today.
Merle looks forward to having
visitors at Salem and has been a resident
there for almost five years after
spending several years in a unit in
Walking among Granite Belt wild flowers
For those of us who grew up
in South-East Queensland with
extended families living on the
Downs, as well as the Sunshine
Coast, gathering wildflowers in
the August school holidays was
always a vacation pastime.
Fields of small flowers including
boronias, wattles, heaths,
pea flowers of various colours,
hops bushes and hibbertias were
examined in detail as we walked
through the local bush.
Over the years many of the
boronias, ground orchids and
tea trees disappeared nearer the
coast due to increased population
and urban development.
Some of these I have seen
in the local area around Crows
Nest during better weather conditions.
Volunteers of the Stanthorpe
Wild Flower Consortium, a wonder
group, show and promote
awareness of the importance of
improving and maintaining wild
GARDEN CLUB
flower eco systems in their own
area. It was a delight to join them
and see so many of the flowers
not seen for many years growing
in the granite boulders.
In small pockets of bushland
around the Crows Nest area
unique wild flowers and trees
GRANITE BORONIA
Preserving eco systems
can still be found but need to be
identified and promoted more,
hopefully bringing more visitors
to enjoy our own local areas like
the Valley of Diamonds, Crows
Nest falls and Applegum walk. -
Celebrating 20 years
in the community
Advertising Feature
High Country Herald is a newspaper with a heritage
By MILES NOLLER
Media nerds might suggest that the future for news is
with the internet, social media and web sites. But the owners
of the business, Neil and Ann Lomas, are so enthused
about their newspaper, that they are planning a celebration
of their 20 years of proprietorship.
At a time when global giants Google and Facebook are
said to be taking billions of dollars of advertising revenue
each year from the established Australian media, High
Country Herald grows its advertising each year along
with its circulation reach across the northern part of the
Toowoomba Region.
Twenty years ago, Neil and Ann purchased the Crows
Nest based newspaper The New Advertiser. It was an eight
page, black and white paper that was published fortnightly.
Highfields was then serviced by a small newsletter,
Highfields Neighbours, which Neil and Ann bought and
changed the name to Highfields Herald.
The Crows Nest paper’s name was also changed, to
Crows Nest Advertiser, harking back to 1905 when the
first Crows Nest Advertiser was published. Along the
way, when owned by Gatton interests, the local paper was
known as the East West Advertiser (east for Gatton and
west for Crows Nest.)
In 2010 Neil and Ann, pictured, moved their newspaper
office from Crows Nest to Highfields, and in January, 2012,
the first edition of High Country News, merging the Crows
Nest and Highfields publications, was published.
In 2014 they renamed the paper High Country Herald.
Throughout these years, circulation has expanded annually,
from just hundreds with the Crows Nest Advertiser, to
more than 12,000 now, as people in both rural and city areas
learn about the free paper their neighbours are reading,
and request that distribution be expanded to include their
mail boxes also.
The circulation area now extends house-to-house from
North Toowoomba, west to Bowenville, and north to Maclagan
at the base of the Bunya Mountains, and Cooyar,
Crows Nest and Ravensbourne.
Additionally, 500 households receive their paper via
email, and another 350 or so are collected by readers at the
Toowoomba shopping centres, Northpoint, K Mart Plaza,
Wilsonton, High Street Plaza, and Clifford Gardens. More
that 800 copies are distributed in Oakey and 620 at Kingsthorpe.
Around 400 are distributed to Oakey Post Office
boxes, businesses and the western mail run.
Circulation is officially audited at the of March and September
each year.
There are trade businesses who have advertised for 20
years and continue to do so and many readers like to read
the local news in hard copy, even though it is available on
email.
Regardless of how the news is presented though, electronically
or on paper, the biggest attraction is content,
and an 80th birthday party report can be as popular as a
statement from the Mayor or construction work on a road
through the range.
A section on farming is widely read as are reports on
meetings protesting plans considered not in the best interests
of the community.
High Country Herald has taken to the air to farewell
Army Blackhawk helicopters, viewed the Crows Nest
Show from above, and attended functions, meeting people,
and listening to local opinions, ensuring people have their
views expressed publically.
High Country Herald thrives on its community of interest
which community appreciates because it gets a say.
The paper has also contributed to the community in other
ways, such as the running of a community dinner in Crows
Nest each year. Its first dinner attracted 110 people, and
continued for ten years increasing each year until 385 people
attended when the event had to be held in a marquee in
Centenary Park when the new hall was being constructed.
The paper also instigated the Crows Nest markets which,
once established, were handed over to the Lions Club.
The 20th anniversary celebrations are to be held at
Peacehaven Park in Highfields this Sunday, September 24,
from 11.30am to 3pm. There will be a sausage sizzle and
music by the Hobsons. All are invited.
This Sunday
The Herald has been bringing you the local news for 20 years
To thank our many valued supporters
we invite you to join us for a celebration
Little Ada Volz enjoy a quiet biscuit at the Under Eights morning at Kulpi State School.
Children enjoyed the challenge of an old fashioned
hay bale maze at the Under Eights morning,
Kulpi State School.
Kulpi State School always rings with children’s
laughter however there were plenty of additional
voices when it recently hosted an Under Eight’s
morning for local schools.
More than one hundred students aged under
eight came with parents and staff from the Kaimkillenbun,
Quinalow, and Jondaryan schools, as
well as special tiny visitors from Maclagan Kindy.
Principal Rosita Lever said local schools all
contributed to the cluster by hosting sporting
events throughout the year, and that Kulpi wanted
to contribute too.
“Under Eights activities celebrate the special
qualities of young children and their delight in
learning through play,” she said.
“We were thrilled with the support from schools
with everyone participating enthusiastically.”
There were many traditional activities for children,
including face painting, bubbles and painting,
however Kulpi staff organised some special
surprises too.
A hay bale maze was constructed with the help
of local farmer Jono Biggar, and 115 bales provided
a challenge for the children to work their way
through.
Mrs Lever said that because of the success of the
day that she planned to make it an annual event..
Mt Binga endurance ride
Toowoomba Endurance Horse Riders Association
has received sponsorship from Hutchinson Builders
for their upcoming endurance ride at Mt Binga State
Forest on October 7 and 8.
Mr Rob Weymouth, Hutchinson Builders, said:
“This year marks the 105th anniversary for Hutchinson
Builders.
"We consider ourselves a strong and enduring
company, so to partner with a local sporting club to
sponsor an event that is about endurance, resilience
and strong partnerships, is a good match for us,” Mr
Weymouth said.
The endurance event will see horse and rider combinations
compete in ride distances up to 80km over
the weekend.
Ken Gordon TEHRA president said, “We will be
holding a 20km and a 40km ride on Saturday and a
40km and 80km ride on Sunday.
Endurance is a great family sport, we expect
up to 180 riders over the weekend, varying in
age from five right through to people in their 70s.
"We are a not-for-profit sporting group that runs entirely
on volunteers.
"We are extremely grateful to our ride sponsor Hutchinson
Builders, without whose assistance our event
would not be possible.”
TEHRA is seeking volunteers who are interested in
endurance horse riding to assist with the running of
the ride, and always welcomes new club members.
The club rides socially in the Toowoomba region as
well as at endurance events and consists of long term
endurance riders and new members who are learning
the ropes.
As strict biosecurity measures will be in place, all
ride nominations must be made in advance.
Additional ride details can be found on the club’s
Facebook page, or contact Ken Gordon TEHRA president,
Spectators are welcome to attend with Saturday
afternoon and Sunday morning considered best times
Reforms to regional media policy
Member for Groom Dr John
McVeigh has supported measures
announced to support regional and
small publishers and create local
jobs.
The new measures, which are in
addition to the Government’s media
reform package, and subject to
its passage through the Parliament,
include:
• A $50 million Regional and
Small Publishers Innovation fund
• A Regional and Small Publishers
cadetship program to support
200 cadetships ($8 million) and
• Sixty regional journalism
scholarships ($2.4 million over
three years)
The fund could allocate grants
to programs and initiatives such
as purchasing or upgrading equipment,
software, training, development
of apps and business
activities to drive revenue and
readership, all of which would
help small regional publishers to
expand their businesses and create
more jobs.
Funding grants will be capped
at a maximum of $1 million a year
for any media group.
At least two-thirds of funding
must go to regional publishers
and not less than 25 per cent for
non-regional publishers.
Dr McVeigh said he had received
representations from two
local publishers in recent months
in the lead up to the media reforms
debate in Parliament.
“They had some concerns about
potential changes to the media
landscape and how it would affect
their business model,” Dr
McVeigh said.
“I recognise those concerns
and I also value the service they
provide to the smaller, regional
communities around the region.
"They are vital parts of the local
media landscape. These new measures
will be a welcome support
for regional media organisations
which are facing new challenges
in the digital age,” he said.
“Assisting small publishers and
regional newspapers to innovate
in the digital media environment
will go a long way to maintaining
these organisations and create
more local jobs. The cadetship
program is another great initiative
which will boost employment
opportunities through funding for
more cadets in the regions.
This program, together with
funding for 60 regional journalism
scholarships, will give regional
Australians the opportunity to access
journalism training that they
haven’t had before.
“The reforms are vital for the
future viability of Australian media
organisations and local jobs.
"It will unshackle the industry
by freeing it from laws and regulations,
which date back to the
1980s before the internet existed.”
Men's Sheds - Building communities and fixing lives
The Australian Men’s Shed Association
has officially launched 2017 Men’s Shed
Week in partnership with the Bipartisan
Friendship Group of Men’s Sheds at Parliament
House.
“Men’s Sheds aren’t just about building
toys and fixing furniture. Men’s Sheds are
building communities and fixing lives,”
Australian Men’s Shed Association Executive
Officer David Helmers said at the
launch.
The second annual Men’s Shed Week,
themed doing local good, will be celebrated
from Monday, September 25, to
Sunday, October 1, to showcase the work
of Men’s Sheds in contributing to local
communities.
“The benefits of Men’s Sheds extend
well beyond the shed. Activities at the
shed support local people, groups and organisations
and bring people together in
ways that strengthen communities,” Mr
Helmers said.
At the shed, men have the opportunity
to find friendship, a sense of purpose and
a place to belong and contribute.
Many men live fuller and happier lives
through their involvement with their shed.
But it doesn’t stop there.
Shedders devote most of their time to
worthwhile community endeavours - delivering
great benefits for the wider community
through major projects, donating
arts and crafts, participating in community
events, and actively promoting men’s
health and wellbeing.
“The Australian Men’s Shed Association
has been at the forefront of Men’s
Shed innovations for a decade, and in that
time we have seen the Men’s Sheds flourish
across the world,” Mr Helmers said.
The strength of the Men’s Shed concept
is in its simplicity and adaptability to
members’ and community needs, Bipartisan
Friendship Group of Men’s Sheds
Chair the Hon Mark Coulton MP when he
officially opened Men’s Shed Week.
“When it comes down to it, Men’s
Sheds have become a vital investment
because every community benefits when
there’s a Men’s Shed in town,” Mr Helmers
said.
Visit mensshed.org to learn more about
Men’s Shed Week and find your local
shed.
A Men’s Shed plays an important role
in the prevention of social isolation and
the promotion of positive health and wellbeing
amongst men, as well as enabling
men to positively (re)connect with their
community.
The Australian Men’s Shed Association
is the peak national body representing
Men’s Sheds in Australia.
The Association acts to promote and
Farmers question market failures
By MILES NOLLER
Biosecurity workshops
The QDO will hold biosecurity workshops to
help dairy farmers comply with new Queensland
biosecurity laws. Farmers will be helped to develop
a farm biosecurity plan and will be offered
a free Bovine Johnes Disease test. There will be
nine QDO workshops around Queensland, including
Toowoomba on October 4, Kingaroy on October
3, and Gatton on October 5.
• Rugby League legend Shane Webcke, with
Harrisville dairy farmers, David Roderick, left,
and Duncan and Mary McInnes. Shane Webcke
addressed the QDO forum about workplace
safety and the effects of the death of his
father in a workplace accident.
Dairy farmers asked
many questions at the
annual meeting of the
Queensland Dairyfarmers
Organisation in
Toowoomba. But few,
if any, got answers they
would consider satisfactory.
Key people the farmers
had come to hear
were Mick Keogh, head
of the ACCC Dairy
Inquiry, and Senator
Chris Ketter, the Chair
of the Senate Economics
Committee which
has been inquiring into
the dairy industry.
But generally, they
did not have the answers
for the industry,
with farmer statements
saying the industry was
losing farmers at a fast
rate, that farmers were
paid 59 cents a litre for
their milk in 1999, and
were now paid 57 cents
a litre.
In 1999 both sides of
government decided to
deregulate the industry,
which allowed supermarkets
some years
ago to sell milk for $1
a litre, which continues
to rile farmers.
QDO Chairman Brian
Tessmann thanked
Senator Ketter for diligently
taking some
pointed questions from
the meeting, and said he
was encouraged to hear
that Senator Ketter supported
making the code
of conduct mandatory.
This code of conduct
has emerged from
inquiries following the
Murray Goulburn issues
where farmers were retrospectively
had their
milk payments reduced.
Senator Ketter is
an ALP senator for
Queensland.
Mr Tessmann said
dairy farmers were
Ches Priebbenow, dairy farmer from Greenmount; Peter Cavanagh,
dairy farmer from Goomburra Valley; and Senator Chris Ketter, ALP
Senator for Queensland and chair of the Senate Economics References
Committee which reported on an inquiry into the dairy industry.
rightfully frustrated
and increasingly impatient
with what government
and industry were
doing to deliver real
market changes needed
to fix current failures.
He said he was concerned
to hear that
Mick Keogh now
doubts that most dairy
farmers would be covered
by the new unfair
contact protection extension
despite his earlier
public assurances.
Mr Tessmann said he
was also concerned that
the recently introduced
Effects Test in marketing
matters, could
be applied in a different
way in the supply
chain. The Effects
Test changes the onus
of proof in proving
market manipulation,
from proving intent to
showing the effects of
an action.
GOLF
Lady golfers in pyjamas
The Cabarlah Golf Club Monday Ladies Social
Golf Group celebrated National Pyjama Day by
playing golf in their pyjamas. They were raising
funds and awareness for The Pyjama Foundation.
The foundation supports children in foster care by
providing a learning-based mentoring program free of
charge. Their aim is to offer the children the opportunity
to change the direction of their life through learning,
life skills and confidence and to also improve their
educational outcome through reading. Volunteers are
trained in the "Love of Learning Program" and visit
foster children on a weekly basis. The volunteers are
known as "Pyjama Angels". They spend time with a
child reading, helping with homework, and sometimes
just chatting and listening. A "Pyjama Angel" makes a
foster child feel special.
The golfers had an enjoyable morning on the
course, and then enjoyed lunch in the Cabarlah
Golf Course Clubhouse. Organiser, Carmel Lyall, a
Pyjama Angel for 4 years, was well supported in her
endeavour to raise awareness of the Foundation.
"Everyone was so generous not only by raising
funds, but also donating pyjamas, books, sporting
equipment, toys and toiletries which will be shared
among the children in our local area who are in
foster care. The funds raised go towards training
more volunteers because every child in foster care
deserves a Pyjama Angel" she said. Carmel thanked
everyone who joined in the fun of the day, and to the
Cabarlah Golf Club for their support.
