Celebrating 20 years in the community Advertising Feature High Country Herald is a newspaper with a heritage By MILES NOLLER Media nerds might suggest that the future for news is with the internet, social media and web sites. But the owners of the business, Neil and Ann Lomas, are so enthused about their newspaper, that they are planning a celebration of their 20 years of proprietorship. At a time when global giants Google and Facebook are said to be taking billions of dollars of advertising revenue each year from the established Australian media, High Country Herald grows its advertising each year along with its circulation reach across the northern part of the Toowoomba Region. Twenty years ago, Neil and Ann purchased the Crows Nest based newspaper The New Advertiser. It was an eight page, black and white paper that was published fortnightly. Highfields was then serviced by a small newsletter, Highfields Neighbours, which Neil and Ann bought and changed the name to Highfields Herald. The Crows Nest paper’s name was also changed, to Crows Nest Advertiser, harking back to 1905 when the first Crows Nest Advertiser was published. Along the way, when owned by Gatton interests, the local paper was known as the East West Advertiser (east for Gatton and west for Crows Nest.) In 2010 Neil and Ann, pictured, moved their newspaper office from Crows Nest to Highfields, and in January, 2012, the first edition of High Country News, merging the Crows Nest and Highfields publications, was published. In 2014 they renamed the paper High Country Herald. Throughout these years, circulation has expanded annually, from just hundreds with the Crows Nest Advertiser, to more than 12,000 now, as people in both rural and city areas learn about the free paper their neighbours are reading, and request that distribution be expanded to include their mail boxes also. The circulation area now extends house-to-house from North Toowoomba, west to Bowenville, and north to Maclagan at the base of the Bunya Mountains, and Cooyar, Crows Nest and Ravensbourne. Additionally, 500 households receive their paper via email, and another 350 or so are collected by readers at the Toowoomba shopping centres, Northpoint, K Mart Plaza, Wilsonton, High Street Plaza, and Clifford Gardens. More that 800 copies are distributed in Oakey and 620 at Kingsthorpe. Around 400 are distributed to Oakey Post Office boxes, businesses and the western mail run. Circulation is officially audited at the of March and September each year. There are trade businesses who have advertised for 20 years and continue to do so and many readers like to read the local news in hard copy, even though it is available on email. Regardless of how the news is presented though, electronically or on paper, the biggest attraction is content, and an 80th birthday party report can be as popular as a statement from the Mayor or construction work on a road through the range. A section on farming is widely read as are reports on meetings protesting plans considered not in the best interests of the community. High Country Herald has taken to the air to farewell Army Blackhawk helicopters, viewed the Crows Nest Show from above, and attended functions, meeting people, and listening to local opinions, ensuring people have their views expressed publically. High Country Herald thrives on its community of interest which community appreciates because it gets a say. The paper has also contributed to the community in other ways, such as the running of a community dinner in Crows Nest each year. Its first dinner attracted 110 people, and continued for ten years increasing each year until 385 people attended when the event had to be held in a marquee in Centenary Park when the new hall was being constructed. The paper also instigated the Crows Nest markets which, once established, were handed over to the Lions Club. The 20th anniversary celebrations are to be held at Peacehaven Park in Highfields this Sunday, September 24, from 11.30am to 3pm. There will be a sausage sizzle and music by the Hobsons.
