The CIO&Leader Annual conference is 

always a great place to catch up with the 

thinking of India’s top IT leaders. This 

time’s theme, CIO@2020, was selected 

to gauge what they are planning for the 

future, what are the exciting things that 

they are doing, and what are the things 

that are bothering them. 

One interesting item on the agenda this 

time was creation of Agenda 2020, a strategic 

agenda document for Indian CIOs. 

The participating CIOs were divided into 

18 working groups; each group deliberated 

on one topic to come up with a set of 

recommendations—a strategic roadmap 

for 2020—around that topic. Each group, 

of course, made a presentation. But the 

unique thing about that was we wanted to 

capture that knowledge and share it with 

broader community. We are compiling and 

editing the final presentations to publish 

them as a book, which will be sent to the 

broader CIO and IT Heads in India. For 

your copy, write to us. 

However, the interactions happened not 

just through such sessions, numerous 

round tables and other formal discussions 

that were part of the agenda but through 

long, informal one-on-one discussions. 

Even amidst the exotic Manganiyar program 

and royal dinner at the City Palace 

with the Maharana of Udaipur, I did manage 

to probe what are some of them up to, 

what are the things that excites them and 

what are the ones that are bothering them. 

As compared to, say, five years back, 

there is one change which has happened 

for real. The CIOs are far more at ease 

talking about their business. By that, I 

do not mean just the micro business issues 

from their companies’ perspectives but 

even the macro issues and trends in their 

industries. 

While buzzwords like Digital, AI, 

Machine Learning and IoT did dominate 

the discussion—both formal and informal—it 

was pleasantly surprising to see 

CIOs talking about user experience and 

design thinking. 

Maybe, that will be the next frontier!

technology insights, leadership 

talks, inspiring speeches and policy 

briefings, interactive sessions, engaging 

workshops, collaborative knowledge 

sharing—along with loads of fun, ethnic 

food, glimpses of local culture and literally 

a very ‘royal’ experience for its participants 

marked the 18th CIO&Leader Annual 

Conference held between 4th August and 

6th August 2017 at the luxurious Ananta 

Resort at Udaipur, Rajasthan. 

The conference, with a theme CIO@2020, 

had participation of more than 100 top CIOs 

in India and was supported by more than 20 

technology companies as partners. The conference 

also included Agenda 2020, a collaborative 

authoring of a strategic agenda document 

for Indian CIOs by the participating CIOs. The 

other highlight of the conference program was 

a keynote address by the Minister for Civil 

Aviation, Jayant Sinha. Some personal time 

with the king of Udaipur was a unique experience 

for many participating CIOs.

The conference began with a welcome note by 

Kanak Ghosh, Founder & Director, 9.9 Media. 

It was followed by a talk on creating a human 

enterprise by futurologist Steve Wells. After a keynote 

by presenting partner HPE, the participants 

were briefed by CIO&Leader editors on the Agenda 

2020 exercise. Presentations by other partners, 

engaging panel discussions an innovative speed-dating 

aimed at introducing participants to each other 

in a short time completed the first day’s agenda. 

The pre-conference workshop on innovation by 

Ashvin Vellody, Partner, Deloitte Digital & Abhinav 

Chaturvedi, Director, Deloitte Digital saw enthusiastic 

participation from the attending delegates. 

After the formal sessions, it was time for some 

wine and cheese sessions by partners. 

And finally, it was time to unwind. With traditional 

Rajasthan food on their plates and safas on their 

heads, the CIOs and partners had an immersive 

experience of the local Rajasthani culture. 

Day Two began with some interactive breakfast 

sessions with partners. A series of technology and 

solutions presentations, Ideas Café—a session 

where CIOs sit across a table to discuss a topic with 

a moderator for 10 minutes before moving to another 

table with another topic was enjoyed by the delegates. 

The day also had the new Agenda 2020 item, where 

groups of CIOs sat together to create a draft strategic 

agenda around a topic. Apart from technology topics, it 

included management, leadership, talent topics as well. 

They created presentations based on their deliberations. 

CIO&Leader is compiling all those to create a strategy 

book for Indian CIOs.

were acknowledged with trophies and 

certificates by CIO&Leader. 

Day Two began with some interactive 

breakfast sessions with partners.

Panel Discussion on Realizing 

the Full Potential of IoT 

After a few more wine & cheese sessions by the partners, the 

day culminated in a visit to the City Palace—the heart of 

Udaipur. But it was no ordinary visit. The Maharaja, Maharana 

Arvind Singh Mewar, himself was there to greet the guests. A 

dinner at Maharaja’s Fateh Prakash Palace within the palace and a 

Sound & Light show rounded up the evening. 

The last day of the event had two keynotes—one by Akshaya Patra 

UK CEO, Bhawani Singh Shekhawat, and the other by Civil Aviation 

minister Jayant Sinha. In his speech, he explained how the reforms 

initiated by the NDA government are accomplishing structural 

changes in Indian economy. Labeling the current round of reforms as 

Reforms 3.0, he claimed that the changes are the most profound this 

time. He listed six buckets of reforms and explained how the government 

is initiating major changes through each of those.

Two years ago, during one of the board meetings, 

the CHRO at Maruti Suzuki proposed 

the idea of creating a Digital Training Academy 

and Rajesh Uppal, Executive Director-IT and 

CIO Maruti Suzuki India Limited, was asked to 

lead it. Uppal, who sits on the board of Maruti, took 

up the challenge to run the training and people 

development at the auto major. At the 18th Annual 

CIO&Leader Conference, Uppal asked CIOs: Which 

are the areas of people development where technology 

can impact? 

Uppal said that the process of recruitment can be 

aided by technology. Citing an example, Uppal discussed 

how analytics to select the right profiles, to 

identify those employees who will have a long-term 

impact on the organization. At Maruti, the on-boarding 

and orientation which used to be a 15 days affair 

was reduced to 7 days. 

Run as a people development initiative across different 

levels, Maruti created one of the biggest assessment 

centres in the company where Maruti's 1700 

managers could go through assessment process for 

different parameters such as leadership, psychometrics, 

industry knowledge and understanding 

of financials. 

"Through technology, we were able to select a band 

of people and give them what they need. We understood 

their training needs, competency required, and 

target managers, employees and dealers across the 

company's 4500 locations," said Uppal. 

Uppal said the initiative has helped them impart 

targeted training and improve centricity of the 

employees. "Each employee has a different style of 

learning and to understand and facilitate that will 

prove impactful for them, and in turn for our business," 

said Uppal. 

Innovating a Future- 

Back strategy 

The session by Bhawani Singh Shekhawat, CEO, The Akshaya Patra Foundation, UK 

“We exist to eliminate social inequity 

in one generation; which 

is almost an impossible dream. 

But only the impossible should be pursued by 

human beings, particularly leaders,” said Bhawani 

Singh Shekhawat. 

"The Akshaya Patra Foundation serves more 

than 1.7 million meals every single day. For the 




last 17 years, the foundation has operated as a manufacturing 

NGO," said Shekhawat. 

"Leaders tend to have their myopias because 

they don't themselves ask this question. To me, the 

critical aspect of leadership is to build an organization 

which is not current-forward but future-back," 

said Shekhawat. 

He asks CIOs to think of all of the breakthroughs 

that there are: Think about the world that they do 

not see; think about the interplay between technology 

and the knowledge systems that you head, think 

about what the customers really need, think about 

how you make promises – what are the things that 

you learn to say that trap you; think about your contracts 

as commitments. 

He lists down four important questions that leaders 

must ask themselves: 

What are my myopias? 

Where am I trapped? 

What am I adjusting to instead of disrupting? 

What tradeoffs did I make today? 

Shekhawat urges CIOs to “think of what is core 

and what is periphery. Remember that these changes 

are happening at the periphery and not at the core. 

As knowledge workers, as people who inspire your 

organizations with new wisdom - think about the 

outliers, and not just the obvious." 

What Digital means 

in Manufacturing 

The session by PS Easwaran, Partner - Supply Chain & Manufacturing, 

Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India 

At the 18th Annual CIO&Leader Conference,

India, spoke about how CIOs can evolve their digital 

supply chains into value webs. 

India's manufacturing 

is growing roughly 

at half the growth rate 

of China in terms of 

productivity. 'This 

gives Indian manufacturing 

company the 

opportunity for cashing 

in. What are the 

frameworks that companies 

are employing 

or deploying to get 

into a digital agenda 

within their own organizations 

and what 

CIOs need to look at going forward?” said Easwaran. 

"We must think about a few things in the context of 

digital in manufacturing," he said. 

First, our ecosystem is changing. Most CXOs are 

not thinking about how the operations model is 

going to change with digital. Large OEMs focus 

significantly on product innovation, design development, 

and technology around that. Second, 

innovation needs to become collaborative. Citing an 

example, Easwaran said that most companies today 

are grappling with the development time of a product, 

which is much longer than the time for which it 

is profitable in the market place. 

Easwaran said that digital has made intervention 

in project related businesses where the ability 

to change their cycle/design/development time has 

come down drastically as a result of collaborative 

deployment.

The theme of the 18th Annual CIO 

conference was CIO@2020 - New 

Challenges; Newer Possibilities. Considering 

the new CIO will have to 

multitask using multiple talents and 

contribute to multiple facets of business. 

SOA, Blockchain, Data, Security, 

Cloud are the tools that will help facilitate 

this transition. The aim of the 

conference was to decipher, discuss 

and deliberate what is going to be the 

agenda, the investment pattern and the 

buying pattern for the business and 

not just IT.The conference commenced 

on Friday, 4th August and ended on 

till Sunday, 6th August 2017 at The 

Ananta, Udaipur. The exciting conference 

agenda included simulations, 

discussions, case studies and sessions 

by experts from around the world. It 

offered ideas around simulation on 

building your own startup and give 

participants a firsthand experience in 

all areas of business decision making 

like product mix, marketing, finance 

and logistics.

Das, said "For the CIOs, it is 

just the right time to create a strategic 

agenda for 2020 that is actionable!" 

He further said that several agenda 

are thrown in by a lot of consultants, 

experts and research firms. Many of 

them are great as insights and understanding. 

But an agenda should be 

actionable. However, the best people to 

create an Agenda 2020 for the Indian 

CIOs are the Indian CIOs themselves.

After a long day of sessions and workships, the CIOs were ready to unwind. Decked in orange turbans, they 

settled down in anticipation of a great, engaging evening. The Manganiyars are professional Muslim folk 

musicians belonging to Jaisalmer, Barmer, parts of Jalor, Bikaner and Jodhpur districts in Western Rajasthan. 

Like other hereditary caste musicians, they cultivate a close relationship to their patrons. The performance 

begins in complete darkness — light bulbs faintly illuminate 36 human-sized rectangular boxes on a large 

four-tier set. Then the sound of a khamacha, an Indian stringed instrument, breaks the silence. Slowly, lights 

come up on one of the boxes to reveal the musician sitting cross-legged, dressed in white with an orange turban. 

The performance went on for an hour. It was interspersed with a Leadership talk by Srihari Gopinath, 

Head of Marketing - Enterprise Group, HPE India, followed by dinner after the performance.

With Industry 4.0 becoming a reality, our esteemed panel comprising an elite list of security leaders discussed 

operational infrastructure, is not longer isolated from rest of organizational IT. As a result, this 

opening up of closed infrastructure has exposed them to new threats—cyber threats. "IT systems have been 

exposed to for years," said one of the panel members. They discussed a wide range of issues and challenges 

concerning security for critical infrastructure and how can organizations tackle this new risk—risks that 

could bring the entire operation of a plant or refinery to halt.

An additional activity was organized for the spouses of the CIOs who were attending the 18th Annual 

CIO&Leader. The city of lakes - Udaipur provided the perfect opportunity. The better halves of our IT leaders 

were taken for a tour of the city. They went for a boat ride on Lake Pichola, visited the Saheiyon Ki Baadi and 

Palace, among other sites.

There was more dedicated time for fine-tuning the CIO 2020 agenda topic. In this, the chairpersons of 

each group sat in a roundtable and other CIOs, who were not part of that group, gave their input as well to 

the chairperson of a working group. This process will ensure that we do not miss out on inputs from CIOs 

who are not part of that particular work group but still have valuable suggestions. The working groups, 

after going through the detailed deliberations of their own group members as well as receiving the inputs 

of others, made final recommendation on the given topic.
