The diversity of the works and the artists who created them is a reflection of the Guild itself, Smith said. “It’s like family, and that’s what ‘Origins’ has always been – it’s like the big family show at the end of the year,” he added. “It’s a wide range of art, and everybody can appreciate something. That’s what makes it fun and that’s why [guild members] keep wanting to have ‘Origins”’every year.” Lockport resident Misty Soderholm appreciates the welcoming atmosphere that was immediately evident when she joined the guild three years ago. Soderholm had just started creating art again after not doing so for many years, and did not know how she would be received by other members. “Everybody here is so accepting and so loving,” she said. “It’s nice to be around a group of artist who are loving and supportive and not competitive. Art’s not a competition. “Everybody’s an artist deep down. You just have to kind of bring it out.” Soderholm created “Give a Hoot” for the show, and finished the painting just a week before the piece was hung on the clean white wall at Flower of Life, which serves as the Guild’s home gallery. The work is a continuation of Soderholm’s recently developed fascination with animals, specifically their eyes. Her previous two pieces featured at Guild shows were titled “Eye of the Tiger” and “Misty-Eyed Hawk.” “And since then I’ve had a thing for animals and their eyes,” Soderholm said. “It’s almost like the window to the soul for me. So when I look at the eyes that says more than a statement.” Viano’s aforementioned “This Is Who I Am & You Still Love Me” is also related to the eyes – but her own. The work features a progression of selfies laid beneath the coils of a child’s mattress, and weaved into the coils are the tubes and mouthpieces of the apparatus Viano must wear every night because she suffers from sleep apnea. Viano, of Downers Grove, created the very personal piece to express thanks to her husband, John. He obviously doesn’t care what his wife looks like with the mask on her face, but the apparatus greatly affected Viano’s self-image. “He still loves me even though I look like that,” Viano said, and pointed to the photos in which she is wearing the mask. “I wanted to just express myself.
