The regular season in golf is already over. How would you say the season has gone for you and the team? It’s gone alright. For me, I shot my best 9-hole score against Lincoln-Way West at Sanctuary Golf Course with a 1-over 37 [in a 187- 210 win on Sept. 5]. So that was good. As a team, we’ve grown. So that is good, too. How did you start playing golf? My family moved to Lockport from Bridgeview in 2009, and, with all the golf courses around, I started playing then. But I didn’t start taking golf seriously until before I got into seventh grade. What got you to take golf seriously? I realized that I wanted to play in college. So if golf was going to be my ticket to college, I had to get better in order to earn a scholarship. You are just a sophomore, but have you started looking at playing at any colleges? A little bit, but I’m not sure where I want to go. I might want to go to a smaller school and probably want to stay closer to home. You do not play any other sports, so what is it about golf that makes it the best for you? This is kind of nerdy, but it helps me with math, which is my favorite subject. It helps with knowing the angles and such in golf. I also enjoy playing golf with different people and spending time with them. You can spend a couple hours with someone and make a new friend for the day. What is your favorite golf course? It was Woodbine [Golf Course] [in Homer Glen], but that closed. Now, it’s probably Old Oak [Country Club also in Homer Glen]. But it’s not my home course at Broken Arrow [Golf Club in Lockport]. I have my best ever [18-hole] score there with an 81, but it’s repetitive, since I golf it all the time. Have you ever had a hole-in-one? No. I’ve gotten close a couple of times, within a few feet. I’ve never had an eagle in a competition, either. My most difficult holes are the ones where it’s an island green. What have you learned from coach Kyle Yaeger? I’ve learned to not only focus on my game, but to focus on the team score, too. Because my [game] affects the team score. Randy Whalen/22nd Century Media What is your goal for the postseason? To shoot in the 70s and make it out of the sectional to state. Last year, I came close, shooting an 81 at sectionals and missing it by two strokes. So far, my best [18- hole] score this season is an 84. So I know in the regional and sectional tournaments, I have to do better than that. What is the best thing about being an athlete at Lockport? Meeting new friends. My golf season is in the fall, and the same season as a lot of my other friends in different sports. So that’s great, as we have similar schedules.
