Designed With You In Mind HOMER GLEN New Homes, Old-Fashioned Quality Open Fri. – Tues. 11-5 or by appointment. Athlete of the Week 10 Questions with Maria Pappas Maria Pappas is a senior at Sandburg High School. She plays third doubles for the Eagles girls tennis team. How did you get started playing tennis? I never played tennis growing up. I played basketball my whole life. But right before my eighth-grade year started, my dad, who had played his whole life, he told me to maybe get into it and play in high school, kind of for fun. And he told me I’m a lefty, so I’d have an advantage and all that. Then, I just started lessons. And I got a knee injury, so I couldn’t play basketball anymore. Then, I kind of fell back into tennis, and now it’s my main sport. Do you have any superstitions or rituals? One of them is I have to bounce the ball with my racket once and then bounce it from my hand two times before every serve. What is your proudest moment in tennis? My proudest moment was probably [Sept. 2, when] we had the Ottawa tournament. My partner and I lost the first set 1-6, but we ended up winning the second set in a tiebreaker, and we won the third-set tiebreaker. And then, we ended up winning the championship, and that was the deciding match for our whole team to win. What goals do you have for your senior season? My goal is probably for the team to win conference, and I’d like to be moved up to second doubles to have a chance to qualify for state. What did you work on between last season and this one? I worked on a lot of my doubles game, so a lot of moving in and volleying. And now, I play a return and volley game, for the most part, so I do a lot of volleying and running to the net. If you won the lottery, what would you buy first? I would just buy plane tickets, and I would travel across Europe. Italy, Spain, the islands in Greece, France, London. And then, I’d probably buy a wardrobe to go with the trip. Who is your favorite professional athlete? My favorite athlete is Steph Curry. I’ve liked him since I was in about the fourth [or] fifth grade. He’s very Christian, and he has very good beliefs, but he’s high school highlights The rest of the week in high school sports 22nd Century Media File Photo also an insane point guard. What item or two could you not live without? One item I can’t live without is probably the cross I wear. And I also have a necklace from my grandma, [and the necklace] is a wishbone, and that’s kind of my lucky charm. I actually got the cross this summer, and I got it blessed from all these holy places in Greece. If you could play with any doubles partner, who would you choose? I would choose to play with Stan Wawrinka, because he has a wicked backhand, and I like my backhand more, too, so I feel like we’d complement each other. What is your dream job? I want to be a CEO of probably an advertising company one day. I have a big voice, so I want to do something where I can be the leader and make the decisions, but I also want to do something where I can be creative and still let my artistic side show.
