Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 

Sunday asked people to promote 

tourism spots in their states and also to 

visit the numerous tourist sites within 

the country instead of getting attracted 

by “superficial glitter” abroad. 

“It is a matter of concern when we 

do not see our own country, we do not 

know about its diversities nor do we 

understand them. Impressed by mere 

superficial glitter, we have started 

enjoying touring foreign countries,”

Modi said in his Mann Ki Baat radio 

programme. 

“I have no issues if you travel around 

the world but have a look at your 

own country too,” the Prime Minister 

added. 

Modi urged people to visit the seven 

best tourist destinations in their state 

and promote them by posting pictures 

from there on social networking sites 

with hashtag ‘Incredible India’. 

Urging people to travel like a student 

and observer, Modi said he had visited 

more than 500 districts in the country. 

This had helped him to understand 

things better. 

“In order to promote tourism, every 

Indian must know about the best 

tourist destinations in your state,” 

Modi said. 

Lakhs of photographs received from 

every corner of India will actually 

become a treasure for the tourism 

sector, he said. 

He asked people to write good 

travelogues and post information about 

architecture, natural beauty and daily 

life of various places. 

Based on the inputs, the government 

would prepare publicity material, 

Modi said. 

Observing that October to March was 

a suitable time for tourism, he asked 

people to travel to different parts of 

the country as it was full of “myriad 

diversities” instead of visiting foreign 

countries. 

He said Mahatma Gandhi, Lokmanya 

Tilak and Swami Vivekananda 

travelled widely in India. This 

developed their understanding of the 

country. 

“Can we make an effort as a student 

to learn, understand and try to live 

as per the traditions, culture, attire, 

eating habits and beliefs of different 

states, different societies, different 

groups of our country?” Modi asked.

at the EICMA 2017 on November 7.

WOMEN TO DRIVE FOR 

THE FIRST TIME 

Saudi King Salman has issued a decree 

giving women the right to drive for the 

first time from next year, ending a ban 

seen by rights activists as an emblem 

of the ultra-conservative Islamic 

kingdom's repression of women. 

The kingdom was the only country 

in the world to bar women from 

driving and for years had garnered 

international criticism for detaining 

women who defied the ban by taking to 

the road. 

The Saudi Ambassador to 

Washington, Prince Khaled bin 

Salman, said it was a "historic and big 

day in our kingdom". 

"Our leadership thinks that this 

is the right time to do this change 

because currently in Saudi Arabia we 

have a young, dynamic, open society," 

he told reporters. 

Positive reactions quickly poured 

in from inside the kingdom and 

around the world, with the US State 

Department welcoming the move as "a 

great step in the right direction". 

Activist Manal al-Sherif, who 

was arrested in 2011 after a driving 

protest, took to Twitter following the 

announcement to express her relief. 

"Today, the last country on Earth to 

allow women to drive … we did it," she 

wrote.

BALI, Indonesia -- The exodus from a 

menacing volcano on the Indonesian 

tourist island of Bali is nearing 

100,000 people, a disaster official said 

Wednesday, as hundreds of tremors 

from the mountain are recorded daily. 

The National Disaster Mitigation 

Agency said more than 96,000 people 

have now fled the area around Mount 

Agung in the northeast of the island. 

Villagers began leaving in the 

middle of last week and the number 

of evacuees has swelled daily since 

Friday, when the volcano's alert status 

was raised to the highest level. 

The agency said a monitoring 

center had recorded more than 800 

earthquakes so far Wednesday and 

thin smoke was observed rising 160 

feet above the crater.

the UN's overall designation of 2017 as

Charter Slots Will 

Affect Season’ 

Panaji: Charter operators, who had 

been anticipating a 25% rise in charter 

flights for the upcoming season, are 

unsure now. At the heart of the issue 

are the changes in slot allotment for 

charter flights at the Goa International 

Airport, Dabolim. Charter and tour 

operators are "extremely unhappy" 

that this issue has unfolded just as the 

tourism season is set to start next week. 

Describing the situation as 'alarming', 

Travel and Tourism Association of Goa 

(TTAG) president Savio Messias said 

that he is continuously in touch with 

charter operators. The delay in slot 

allotment, he said, is just a part of a 

bigger problem, that of tour operators 

being unhappy with this year's 

allotment of slots. "In the past, the slots, 

which were allotted in accordance with 

the vessel, remained unchanged. This 

year, however, they have changed the 

pattern," Messais said. He said the least 

that the Airports Authority of India 

(AAI) could have done was to intimate 

them (charter operators) in advance 

about the proposed changes. "This 

eleventh hour notice has put the plans 

of tour operators in jeopardy," Messias 

said. "Though we had been anticipating 

a significant jump in charter tourists 

this season, this problem, if not sorted 

out, will have adverse effect on the 

season," said Messias. 

Travel Corporation of India (TCI), 

chief operating officer, Ernest Dias, 

too, said that the government will have 

to sort out this issue at the earliest 

possible so as to ensure that the charter 

business will not be negatively affected. 

TTAG has sought an intervention into 

the issue by the government. They have 

also placed a request with the chief 

minister's office for a meeting.

be released in the second half of 2018 

and its previews will start shipping 

mid-year. The release will include 

perpetual versions of the Office apps

and Outlook and servers including 

Exchange, SharePoint and Skype for 

Business, Microsoft said in statement 

late on Tuesday. 

Office 2019 will add new capabilities 

for customers, including improved 

inking features like pressure 

sensitivity, tilt effects and ink replay. 

“New formulas and charts will 

make data analysis for Excel more 

powerful. Visual animation features 

like Morph and Zoom will add polish 

to PowerPoint presentations,” the

The release will bring server

NEW DELHI: Micromax is getting 

ready to launch an entry-level 4G 

VoLTE feature phone, Bharat One, in 

the first week of October at about Rs 

2,000, joining the race to get a share of 

the segment of basic phones created by 

the Reliance JioPhone. 

The Gurugram-based handset maker 

is set to launch its 4G feature phone 

in an exclusive tieup with state-run 

Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) for 

attractive offers, including free voice, 

two people aware of the company's 

plans told ET on the condition of 

anonymity. The launch is timed to 

take advantage of the festive season 

demand, even as the company 

competes with large Chinese rivals 

that have taken the lion's share in the 

smartphone segment. 

India's second-largest handset 

manufacturer till recently, Micromax 

has slumped to the fourth position in 

the overall rankings and dropped out of 

the list of top five smartphone makers. 

The company is betting on a cheap 

feature phone that supports 4G and 

offers free calls over BSNL's network to

Brikk today announced it is now 

accepting pre-orders for customized 

iPhone X models plated with solid

between $7,495 and $69,995. 

Brikk said orders placed now will

255-Year-Old Great 

Banyan Hasn't 

Stopped Growing 

KOLKATA: The oldest citizen 

of the city the 255-year-old Great 

Banyan at the Indian Botanic Garden, 

Shibpur - is, well, greater than ever 

before. In fact, the garden's grand old 

crowdpuller has increased its girth by 

a massive two acres in a little over 30 

years, forcing its caregivers to create a 

larger boundary railing to hold it in. 

In 1985, when a fence was installed 

around the tree, it covered an area 

of three acres.Today , 32 years later, 

so many prop roots have grown all 

around that the total area covered 

is five acres. So, a new fence had to 

be put around the energetic senior 

citizen. This new fencing has just been 

completed, though senior scientists in 

charge of the tree's health are not sure 

how long this, too, will be relevant. 

The Botanical Survey of India, which 

is the guardian of the garden, has 

already nicknamed the Great Banyan 

`The Walking Tree'. 

The Guinness World Records 

mentions the Great Banyan as one 

that has the largest canopy and covers 

the widest circumference. The garden 

authorities have decided to write to 

the Guinness authorities about the 

tree's latest feat, too. Now, the Great 

Banyan has over 4,000 prop roots that 

is keeping it alive, a wonder in itself, 

since the main trunk was lost to fungal 

infection way back in 1925. At the 

centre of the core area of the tree is 

an installation in memory of the lost 

trunk. 

The tree is `walking' towards the 

East, following the direction of the 

sunlight. Now, the Great Banyan has 

over 4,000 prop roots that is keeping 

it alive, a wonder in itself, since the 

main trunk was lost to fungal infection 

way back in 1925. At the centre of the 

core area of the tree is an installation 

in memory of the lost trunk, reports 

the paper.

produced by Roy Kapur Films. This 

will include finite and continuing 

series, long form and short form 

content across genres, and over time 

‘First on Jio’ feature films. 

RKF will tap into the content 

production capabilities in India and 

together with Jio’s technologies, 

provide the Jio platform with a 

content pipeline. This content would 

be available to more than 128 million 

Jio subscribers all over the country, 

says a Jio statement.

Sundrail in Madhya Pradesh, claims 

that she hasn't consumed a grain of 

rice, or any other solid food, in the last

have to charge you overtime.” 

“Something is wrong here, boss,” his 

assistant said. “We only have 75 boats.
