Waimate – A Thriving Rural Town
Nestled at the foot of the Hunter Hills, 8km
off State Highway 1, Waimate is a thriving rural
town providing the visitor with many reasons
to stop and explore.
Wide spacious streets, a valued collection of
Edwardian buildings, historic churches, parks
and beautiful gardens, create a relaxed, friendly
environment for both residents and visitors
who enjoy browsing Waimate’s specialist
shops.
The town is the heart of a district blessed with
rivers and lakes that offer an extensive range
of outdoor pursuits such as world renowned
salmon and trout fishing, deer hunting, boating,
yachting, bird watching and family camping on
the lake shores.
Outstanding forest, mountain and alpine
tracks encourage walking and mountain
The Waimate district is one of the few places in NZ where
wallabies have taken up residence.
biking. The newly opened White Horse Big
Easy Mountain Bike Trail offers rides to suit
all abilities. The Studholme Bush Walkway
comprises five individual walks of 20 minutes
or a combination of all five tracks over 3 hours.
Waimate has not forgotten its heritage and
those people and animals that helped mould
it. The White Horse Monument is a tribute to
Clydesdale horses and the stands majestically
on the Hunters Hills, visible for miles and
accessed via the Waimate walkway or by car.
The Waimate district is one of the few places
in NZ where wallabies have taken up residence.
Introduced from Australia, you can see them in
wildlife parks, or if hunting is your sport, there
is ample opportunity for this too.
Waimate is also famous for its strawberries,
which have been grown in the region since the
late 1880’s. At any of the strawberry fields,
growers will sell you a punnet of their finest
berries, real berry fruit ice cream or pick your
Waimate Landmarks and Icons
Terrace Downs Resort is one of Canterbury’s most inspirational venues, offering luxurious facilities, breathtaking vistas, premier accommodation,
superb cuisine, a championship golf course and a menu of adventure activities.
Te Waimate
Settler Michael Studholme is considered
to be the “Father of Waimate.” In 1854 he
set out from Christchurch in a dray and
on reaching Point Bush, negotiated with
local Maori to stay in the area. In 1855 he
received the first pastoral license and called
the property Te Waimate. His thatched
“cuddy” was the first European dwelling and
still stands in the garden of Te Waimate.
The unique all-season resort is located within
easy proximity of Christchurch and Methven,
allowing visitors to enjoy its exceptional
facilities for a day trip or weekend retreat
The Royal Albatross with its three metre wing
span is sure to amaze. Led by knowledgeable
guides, a tour from the Centre is the only way
to get close-up views of these magnificent
birds in their world famous breeding colony, so
make certain you book ahead.
Pukekura is also home to a wide range of
other bird and marine life. Albatross, seals,
cormorants and penguins have all colonised the
headland, which boasts a rich cultural history.
The headland has been a fortified site since
the earliest Maori settlement of the region.
On the Fort Taiaroa tour visitors explore the
historic Victorian Fort and 1886 Armstrong
disappearing gun hidden beneath the albatross
colony.
from England. The 3000 square foot ballroom is
still used for weddings and balls and the castle
boasts the only Georgian hanging staircase in
the Southern Hemisphere.
Part of the romance and intrigue of the castle
today is the tragic history of its owner. Larnach
shot himself after a scandal involving his wife
and the building was subsequently used as a
mental hospital and later to billet troops.
Years of neglect finally came to an end
when the Barker family purchased it in 1967
and painstakingly restored and developed
it to its present condition. As well as its
magnificent Victorian interior, resplendent
with architectural details, elaborate fittings and
antique furniture, 35 acres of garden have been
re-developed by Margaret Barker into “Garden
of International Significance” status.
The native plant trail is a beautifully illustrated
walk through the castle grounds among rare
and iconic native plants in rock gardens, a
Today’s owners, David and Andrea Ritchie
CROMWELL
As vineyard and orchard plantings expand
across the lower terraces and valleys, the
spectacle that is autumn time in Cromwell
grows ever more beautiful. Photographers find
it hard to resist the glorious golds, oranges and
yellows in the rows of ancient poplars, patchworked
hillsides and willow-lined waterways.
Autumn’s other charm here, lies in the calmer,
cooler weather, ideal for cycling, walking and
exploring. There are too many track options to
list – best reference is online at Cromwell.org.
nz – but for a few starter walks try Stewart
Town at Bannockburn or the 45th Parallel
near Lowburn.
The first is accessed off Felton Road and
takes you up through old gold mining tailings
past caves and sluiced cliffs. There’s lovely
stone ruins and 100 year old still-fruiting trees,
as well as fabulous views of the vineyards on
the homeward loop. It’s an easy hour and dogs
are welcome but be warned there are a lot of
rabbits to chase.
Along the left shore of Lake Dunstan the 45th
Parallel is marked by a roadside monument.
Walk across the highway and ascend some
400 --plus steps up onto a glacial terrace. This
serves as a grandstand to vast views up and
down the valley. The track follows along the
terrace top then down through a gully, - slippery
underfoot –to the very pretty Lowburn Inlet.
There are toilets and a playground here and it’s
a sheltered picnic spot.
Cromwell
2 SOUTHERN HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS / MARCH 2017
For cyclists too, tracks link to here from
Cromwell and continue right to Bannockburn
and beyond. The roads and side roads are a bit
quieter at this time of year too so cyclists can
also enjoy loops around Burn Cottage Road or
a longer stretch to the village of Tarras up the
right side of Lake Dunstan, if tar seal is more
your style.
Autumn is harvest time in our fruit bowl of
a valley. Stalls sell apples and pears straight
off the trees as well as nuts, olive oil, saffron
and more. The pickers are going all hours too
as the 2017 grapes are gathered for the new
vintage.
There is of course year round activities to
enjoy which are absolutely unique to this
economic importance to the Cromwell Basin
which today is also heart of the burgeoning
Central Otago wine industry.
Just a hundred or so metres along State
5 star ratings, and praise from wine writers
worldwide.
Jointly owned by Steve and Thea Farquharson
and Jane (Steve’s sister) and her husband Geoff
Bews, they returned from overseas to run the
vineyard, having setup the 18 hectare property
in 2002. Steve had studied viticulture, wine
making and the wine trade at Plumpton College
in the UK, and Jane had also studied viticulture
there.
Nevertheless, owning and developing a
vineyard was still a sharp learning curve.
The Central Otago location gives a perfect
mix of sub regional climates and optimum heat
degree-days and the aim was to produce a
pinot noir with rich and intense fruit flavours
from low yielding vines.
During the clearing of the land for planting,
they discovered a 100 year old tree commanded
a place in local folk lore as “the wooing tree”
and a rendezvous for sweethearts and lovers.
The tree was retained and the story provided
the perfect name for both the vineyard and the
owners’ new wine label! Today Wooing Tree
sits prominently in the middle of the vineyard,
which has become a popular location for
marriage proposals and weddings.
We offer wine tastings, sales, lunches
and platters, all in a relaxed child-friendly
environment with a sandpit and slide.
Functions and weddings are by appointment
