Waimate – A Thriving Rural Town

Nestled at the foot of the Hunter Hills, 8km

off State Highway 1, Waimate is a thriving rural

town providing the visitor with many reasons

to stop and explore.

Wide spacious streets, a valued collection of

Edwardian buildings, historic churches, parks

and beautiful gardens, create a relaxed, friendly

environment for both residents and visitors

who enjoy browsing Waimate’s specialist

shops.

The town is the heart of a district blessed with

rivers and lakes that offer an extensive range

of outdoor pursuits such as world renowned

salmon and trout fishing, deer hunting, boating,

yachting, bird watching and family camping on

the lake shores.

Easy Mountain Bike Trail offers rides to suit

all abilities. The Studholme Bush Walkway

comprises five individual walks of 20 minutes

or a combination of all five tracks over 3 hours.

Waimate has not forgotten its heritage and

those people and animals that helped mould

it. The White Horse Monument is a tribute to

Clydesdale horses and the stands majestically

on the Hunters Hills, visible for miles and

accessed via the Waimate walkway or by car.

The Waimate district is one of the few places

in NZ where wallabies have taken up residence.

Introduced from Australia, you can see them in

wildlife parks, or if hunting is your sport, there

is ample opportunity for this too.

Waimate is also famous for its strawberries,

which have been grown in the region since the

late 1880’s. At any of the strawberry fields,

Welcome the cooler months with a weekend escape to the Waitaki! The perfect cure for shorter days and dropping temperatures superb is indulging cuisine, in a championsh

a mini-break full of the things you love. It doesn’t matter if you want adventure, culture, food, family time or all of it. Mix and match activities to

create your perfect itinerary for one or two days, and leave the everyday behind. Unwind on the path less travelled and cruise down to the Waitaki.

Adventure

Whether it’s on two legs, two wheels, in the air, or with

your feet firmly on the ground, the Waitaki Valley is

full of adventure.

• Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail – A 301km

formed cycle trail taking you from the

Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean. The

Trail only requires a moderate amount of

fitness; it’s mostly downhill, and suitable

for all ages.

• Ski – Hit the slopes high above lakes,

nestled at the northern end of the

District.

• Rock climbing - The unique limestone

formations in the Waitaki Valley offer a

different kind of adventure. Get out rock

climbing with one of our local companies.

Family

Grab your bikes for the ultimate cycling adventure,

explore Oamaru’s Victorian Precinct and dress up for

a period photo, or visit unique wildlife including two

types of penguin. There are countless options to keep

everyone entertained.

• Steampunk playground and Friendly Bay

– It might be cooling down but kids still

want to play and run, and on those clear

big blue-skied days Oamaru Harbour is

perfect. Bring a little fishing rod and let

the kids drop in a line from the safety

of the protected beach at Friendly Bay,

or hunt for crabs and other sea life

around the rocks at the edges of the

beach. While you’re there take in the

Steampunk themed playground also

located at Friendly Bay.

• Bring the family to Fire and Steam - Held

in Oamaru’s Victorian Precinct, this event

celebrates fire and steam with spectacular

lighting, sound and special effects. There

is plenty for the whole family including

live music, street entertainment and food

stalls.

• Grab a photo at Lookout Point – An

icon in Oamaru, situated high above the

harbour, look out over the Pacific Ocean

and get a photo beneath the distance

sign pointing to various cities around the

world.

Food

With a combination of award-winning restaurants and

fresh local produce straight from the garden and sea,

the region offers an array of delicious food and wine.

• Café hop – The District offers lots of

cafes, so start with breakfast, and wind

your way around the District sampling

treats.

• Award winning dining – Spend the

evening being waited on. Whether you

want seafood, garden fresh or casual, the

Waitaki has lots of options.

• Local wine and beer – There a number of

vineyards and cellar doors in the Waitaki

Valley, the NZ Whisky Collection cellar

door in Oamaru’s Victorian Precinct and

a brewery nestled beside the harbour.

Culture, Heritage and the Arts

Oamaru and the Waitaki have a rich history and

heritage, from Victorian streetscapes and Maori

history, to Steampunk and galleries; discover a world

of culture where you’ll want to return

• Victorian Precinct - Originally the

commercial and business district of

Oamaru, the buildings in the Precinct

were predominantly grain and seed

warehouses throughout the late 19th

century. These beautiful limestone

buildings house a mixture of galleries,

shops, traditional crafts, and food & drink

outlets.

• Steampunk Festival – The New Zealand

Steampunk Festival includes Oamaru Fire

and Steam, a gala ball, tea pot racing and

more. The Festival runs from Thursday

1st – Sunday 4th June 2017.

• See a show – The Oamaru Opera House

Unique wildlife, striking mountain scenes, glacierfed

lakes, rolling farmland and beautiful coastline.

Come experience pure nature.

• Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony – See the

world’s smallest penguins in their natural

habitat. You can view the pint-sized birds

waddle back from sea every evening from

the Colony’s grandstand year-round.

• Drive – Time to revive the road-trip. The

Waitaki District has it all - beautiful, long

stretches of coastline, majestic mountains,

vast lakes and stunning farmland. It

doesn’t really matter which way you go,

you’ll be greeted with stunning views.

Originally called the Victoria Store, Naylor

saw financial opportunity in provisioning

the many miners that flocked to the region’s

goldfields. Over the next 100 years the building

has served Clyde as a grocery store, a drapery,

a vetinary clinic, an accommodation house and

a restaurant, achieving international notoriety

for fine food in 1980’s under the ownership of

Fleur Sullivan.

Today’s owners, David and Andrea Ritchie

took over Olivers 7 years ago, meticulously

and sympathetically restoring the buildings and

re-launching its boutique accommodation. The

final step in the “full circle” refurbishment was

the re-opening of the restaurant in 2015.

Also, established on site is the Victoria Store

Brewery, while a new extension houses the

Merchant of Clyde Café and Deli. The brewery

offers a fine selection of craft beers on tap,

The Eade Gallery, located in Historic Clyde,

Central Otago’s artists to be be represented

Melanie’s own career began with tertiary

Among the artists whose work is on frequent

landscape paintings by Maurice Middleditch,

Richard Parsons, Nigel Wilson and vivid mixed

media paintings by Esther Dexter. Raku pottery

CROMWELL

As vineyard and orchard plantings expand

across the lower terraces and valleys, the

spectacle that is autumn time in Cromwell

grows ever more beautiful. Photographers find

it hard to resist the glorious golds, oranges and

yellows in the rows of ancient poplars, patchworked

hillsides and willow-lined waterways.

Autumn’s other charm here, lies in the calmer,

cooler weather, ideal for cycling, walking and

exploring. There are too many track options to

list – best reference is online at Cromwell.org.

nz – but for a few starter walks try Stewart

Town at Bannockburn or the 45th Parallel

near Lowburn.

The first is accessed off Felton Road and

takes you up through old gold mining tailings

past caves and sluiced cliffs. There’s lovely

stone ruins and 100 year old still-fruiting trees,

as well as fabulous views of the vineyards on

the homeward loop. It’s an easy hour and dogs

are welcome but be warned there are a lot of

rabbits to chase.

Along the left shore of Lake Dunstan the 45th

Parallel is marked by a roadside monument.

Walk across the highway and ascend some

400 --plus steps up onto a glacial terrace. This

serves as a grandstand to vast views up and

down the valley. The track follows along the

terrace top then down through a gully, - slippery

underfoot –to the very pretty Lowburn Inlet.

There are toilets and a playground here and it’s

a sheltered picnic spot.

Cromwell

2 SOUTHERN HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS / MARCH 2017

For cyclists too, tracks link to here from

Cromwell and continue right to Bannockburn

and beyond. The roads and side roads are a bit

quieter at this time of year too so cyclists can

also enjoy loops around Burn Cottage Road or

a longer stretch to the village of Tarras up the

right side of Lake Dunstan, if tar seal is more

your style.

Autumn is harvest time in our fruit bowl of

a valley. Stalls sell apples and pears straight

5 star ratings, and praise from wine writers

worldwide.

Jointly owned by Steve and Thea Farquharson

and Jane (Steve’s sister) and her husband Geoff

Bews, they returned from overseas to run the

vineyard, having setup the 18 hectare property

in 2002. Steve had studied viticulture, wine

making and the wine trade at Plumpton College

in the UK, and Jane had also studied viticulture

there.

Nevertheless, owning and developing a

vineyard was still a sharp learning curve.

The Central Otago location gives a perfect

mix of sub regional climates and optimum heat

degree-days and the aim was to produce a

pinot noir with rich and intense fruit flavours

from low yielding vines.

During the clearing of the land for planting,

they discovered a 100 year old tree commanded

a place in local folk lore as “the wooing tree”

and a rendezvous for sweethearts and lovers.

The tree was retained and the story provided

the perfect name for both the vineyard and the

owners’ new wine label! Today Wooing Tree

sits prominently in the middle of the vineyard,

which has become a popular location for

marriage proposals and weddings.

We offer wine tastings, sales, lunches

and platters, all in a relaxed child-friendly

environment with a sandpit and slide.
