Te Waimate 

Settler Michael Studholme is considered 

to be the “Father of Waimate.” In 1854 he 

set out from Christchurch in a dray and 

on reaching Point Bush, negotiated with 

local Maori to stay in the area. In 1855 he 

received the first pastoral license and called 

the property Te Waimate. His thatched 

“cuddy” was the first European dwelling and 

still stands in the garden of Te Waimate.

While visiting Waimate, you must visit the 

town’s Filename: famous JW2166 wallabies at EnkleDooVery 

Korna Wallaby Park. Visitors can wander at 

their leisure among 60 tame wallabies, all in 

their family groups within over 20 enclosures. 

Special pellets are provided to help you 

participate in the feeding experience. 

Gwen, the “Wallaby Lady” has been hand 

rearing baby wallabies since 1977, but only 

opened the park to the public in 1999. From 

October to April, Gwen hand rears baby 

wallabies brought to her by hunters. This 

requires much commitment as they need 

constant warmth and food. But they really are

Waimates Tame Wallabies

and adults! There are also other animals to 

see at the park including bantams, possums 

and rare breed sheep, as well as an old time 

Trapper’s Hut.

Strawberry Farms 


In the 1880’s the first strawberry farm 


was planted by Mr Childs, who also opened 


a shop for the sale of the “La Marguerite” 


variety of strawberries. By1898, numerous 


berry fields had developed and the 


industry employed 150-200 people to 


pick, pack and ship the punnets by train 


to Dunedin, Christchurch and beyond. 

The iconic taste is still associated with 

Waimate where berry farms flourish and 

Strawberry Festival occurs annually in 

December.

memorabilia and retro items as well as a wide

The large shop has plenty of room for the upcycling 

and restoring of furniture on one side 

of the shop, while the shop floor on the other 

side caters for giftware, second hand clothing, 

linen, jewellery and ornamentals. Because the 

shop is large there is plenty of room to move 

around without banging into things and space 

for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Minister Norman Kirk was born 

in Waimate on 6th January 1923. He led 

the Parliamentary arm of the Labour Party 

from 1965-1974 and was the 4th Labour 

Prime Minister from 1972 until his sudden 

death on 31st August 1974. The local high 

school bears his name as well as the town’s 

swimming pool opened in 1978. Norman 

Kirk and his wife Ruth are both buried in the 

Waimate Cemetery. 

Janelle Roguski’s collections are sourced 

through auctions and sales and listening to 

what the customer is looking for. She likes to 

find the unusual pieces that she can redo and 

bring new life to. “I love the older solid wood 

furniture which was built to last but I also have 

an affinity for giftware when sourcing all sorts 

of new items” says Janelle

CROMWELL 

As vineyard and orchard plantings expand 

across the lower terraces and valleys, the 

spectacle that is autumn time in Cromwell 

grows ever more beautiful. Photographers find 

it hard to resist the glorious golds, oranges and 

yellows in the rows of ancient poplars, patchworked 

hillsides and willow-lined waterways. 

Autumn’s other charm here, lies in the calmer, 

cooler weather, ideal for cycling, walking and 

exploring. There are too many track options to 

list – best reference is online at Cromwell.org. 

nz – but for a few starter walks try Stewart 

Town at Bannockburn or the 45th Parallel 

near Lowburn. 

The first is accessed off Felton Road and 

takes you up through old gold mining tailings 

past caves and sluiced cliffs. There’s lovely 

stone ruins and 100 year old still-fruiting trees, 

as well as fabulous views of the vineyards on 

the homeward loop. It’s an easy hour and dogs 

are welcome but be warned there are a lot of 

rabbits to chase. 

Along the left shore of Lake Dunstan the 45th 

Parallel is marked by a roadside monument. 

Walk across the highway and ascend some 

400 --plus steps up onto a glacial terrace. This 

serves as a grandstand to vast views up and 

down the valley. The track follows along the 

terrace top then down through a gully, - slippery 

underfoot –to the very pretty Lowburn Inlet. 

There are toilets and a playground here and it’s 

a sheltered picnic spot.

For cyclists too, tracks link to here from 

Cromwell and continue right to Bannockburn 

and beyond. The roads and side roads are a bit 

quieter at this time of year too so cyclists can 

also enjoy loops around Burn Cottage Road or 

a longer stretch to the village of Tarras up the 

right side of Lake Dunstan, if tar seal is more 

your style. 

Autumn is harvest time in our fruit bowl of 

a valley. Stalls sell apples and pears straight 

off the trees as well as nuts, olive oil, saffron 

and more. The pickers are going all hours too 

as the 2017 grapes are gathered for the new 

vintage.

Jointly owned by Steve and Thea Farquharson 

and Jane (Steve’s sister) and her husband Geoff 

Bews, they returned from overseas to run the 

vineyard, having setup the 18 hectare property 

in 2002. Steve had studied viticulture, wine 

making and the wine trade at Plumpton College 

in the UK, and Jane had also studied viticulture 

there. 

Nevertheless, owning and developing a 

vineyard was still a sharp learning curve. 

The Central Otago location gives a perfect 

mix of sub regional climates and optimum heat 

degree-days and the aim was to produce a 

pinot noir with rich and intense fruit flavours 

from low yielding vines. 

During the clearing of the land for planting, 

they discovered a 100 year old tree commanded 

a place in local folk lore as “the wooing tree” 

and a rendezvous for sweethearts and lovers. 

The tree was retained and the story provided 

the perfect name for both the vineyard and the 

owners’ new wine label! Today Wooing Tree 

sits prominently in the middle of the vineyard, 

which has become a popular location for 

marriage proposals and weddings. 

We offer wine tastings, sales, lunches 

and platters, all in a relaxed child-friendly 

environment with a sandpit and slide.

Fascinating Collection of Transport and Toys 

The Wanaka Transport and Toy Museum 

is one of the largest private collections in 

the Southern Hemisphere, with over 60,000 

items on display. Acquired over many years 

by the late Gerald Rhodes via advertisements, 

auctions, markets and garage sales, the varied 

collection has something to interest everyone, 

whether adult or child. 

Described as a “pandora’s box of surprises” 

the transport exhibits include over 600 rare 

and unusual aircraft, cars, trucks, motorcycles, 

fire appliances, military vehicles, tractors and 

an extraordinary range of “automobilia.” 

Among the more unusual exhibits are some 

“must see” items including one of the world’s 

largest single-engine bi-plane and the world’s
