Event to take place Oct. 14 in Evergreen Park Submitted by Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation Durbins in Evergreen Park is giving to children and teens fighting cancer. The bar is sponsoring its seventh annual Durbins Cares for Kids with Cancer Benefit Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017. All proceeds will benefit the Orland Park-based Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides comfort and distraction from painful procedures to children and teens diagnosed with cancer by providing a toy, gift or gift card in 51 treatment centers nationwide. There will be no cover charge for admission to the event. Adults and children are welcome. Highlights are to include free food, exciting raffles, a special split-the-pot drawing and entertainment compliments of Acoustically Skewed. The event is to run from 4-7 p.m. at Durbins Pizza, 10240 S. Kedzie Ave. in Evergreen Park. Last year, the Durbins Cares for Kids with Cancer raised more than $2,600 for the Treasure Chest Foundation. Over the past five years, the Durbins Cares Benefit has brought more than $20,500 to the Treasure Chest Foundation. Colleen Kisel founded Treasure Chest in 1996 after her then 7-year-old son Martin had been diagnosed with leukemia in 1993. She discovered that giving her son a toy after each procedure provided a calming distraction from his pain, and his new world filled with doctors, nurses, chemotherapy drugs, surgeries and seemingly endless painful procedures. Martin celebrated his 24th anniversary of remission from the disease earlier this year. Sometimes, it may seem like there are too many to count, but they remain ever-important. This weekend, there are three big causes with direct ties to Orland Park. Who Benefits: Miracles Made Thru Research, which plans to donate the proceeds to Lurie Children’s Hospital and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital for research projects in the area of pediatric chronic liver immunity diseases. Tickets are available at Please see Cause, 8 Registration open for Citizens’ Police Academy Submitted by Village of Orland Park Adults who have an interest in law enforcement or those who simply want to know more about law enforcement in Orland Park are invited to register for Orland Park Police Department’s Citizens’ Police Academy, to be held on Saturday, Oct. 14. The one-day class runs from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Orland Park Police Department, 15100 S. Ravinia Ave. There is no charge for the class, and lunch will be provided. The class is limited in size and is open to adults ages 18 and older. A criminal history review will be conducted on each registrant prior to acceptance into the academy. The academy curriculum includes the functions of the department’s Patrol and Investigations Divisions. Participants also will meet officers serving in the Traffic Unit, DARE Program and schools. The department’s K-9 Unit will conduct a demonstration, and students may participate in mock traffic stops, along with other simulations.
