Side Trips
My family does not like raisins.
So while I keep a small container of
raisins in the pantry to occasionally
throw into my morning oatmeal, I rarely cook
with them.
Last week I needed
cinnamon raisin bread
for a recipe we were going
to photograph for
our sister publication
OKOBOJI Magazine. I
used my bread machine
to prepare the dough,
and since I added the
raisins right at the
beginning, they got
broken apart into little
pieces during the kneading
process.
I baked the bread in
MYRNA
WAGNER
a loaf pan for traditional shaped slices, but
my loaf turned out a little lopsided and I was
concerned of how it would photograph.
I trimmed one end cap to see if the lopsided
loaf would be salvageable and decided it would
do. I then stored the bread in a zip-top bag until
I needed it.
Life got busy for the next few days, and the
photo shoot still hadn’t taken place. Jeff, seeing
that cut loaf of bread still in the fridge on
a night when I was getting home late, decided
I shouldn’t have to cook, and would just have
bread instead.
I’m not sure whose facial expression was
worse — his or mine — when I arrived home
and he announced, “That bread you made was
pretty good.”
After staring at him in dismay, I heard myself
ask, “Why on earth would you eat RAISIN
bread?”
“Well, you really couldn’t tell,” he said.
“There weren’t any big raisins and it tasted
more like cinnamon.”
No sense crying over sliced bread, and I had
enough ingredients for a second loaf. Good
news is the second loaf looked better than the
first.
People for Pets
People For Pets is a non-profit
organization devoted to finding loving
homes for abandoned pets by
dedicated volunteers who put in an
average of 1500 hours of service
per month. We have an agreement
with the city of Spencer, IA, to find
homes for all stray cats and dogs
not claimed within three business
days. Before this agreement was
made, these loving pets were put
to sleep!
People For Pets helps pets find
loving homes and people find loving
pets. We also promote spaying
and neutering to help control the
pet population. All dogs/cats are
spayed/neutered prior to adoption
unless they are too young or have
not yet been scheduled for the procedure.
From peopleforpets.org.
You are invited to celebrate Oktoberfest,
People for Pets-style,
at PetOberfest.
For the second year, People for
Pets will be hosting their PetOberfest
fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 14 from
5-8 p.m. at the Spencer Community
Theatre.
While the night is about having lots
of fun with a distinctly German flair,
it’s also about raising awareness and
money for People For Pets.
“The purpose is to bring awareness
to the shelter, celebrate all the
wonderful people that support and
volunteer to make People for Pets a
success, and to raise money to keep
our shelter going, as it is completely
supported by donations and has no
government funding,” said Heather
Storey with People for Pets. “This
will help ensure that we can continue
to rehabilitate and care for rescued
animals as we work to find them their
forever homes.”
The night will include lots of fun
entertainment for all.
The band Polka Police will be providing
live music for the event, and
according to Storey, the band puts a
“really fun spin on polka with their
rockin’ parodies, covers and some
original music as well.”
To keep with the German style,
they’ll also be providing some interesting
German-inspired foods such
as brats, smoked salmon and capers
canapes, tomato and basil caprese
kabobs, shrimp cups, artichoke bites
and a number of desserts.
And it would be an Oktoberfest
party without one special drink.
“We also have West O Beer on tap,
domestic beer, an assortment of wine
and non-alcoholic beverages as well,”
Storey added.
The organizers will be bringing
back the popular “Wine Wall” where
a small donation allows participants
to enter into a drawing for a “mystery”
bottle of wine whose value may be as
much as $100.
There will also be a live auction as
well.
There will be a number of prizes
auctioned off including a fat tire
bike, an Okoboji boat cruise, indoor
fireplace, Cyclone’s patio chairs and
tickets, a Crown Royal quilt, weekend
getaways, a YMCA membership and
more.
It’s a fun night for all, including the
organizers.
“Aside from all the fun interacting
with people who support the shelter
and partaking in the events that evening,
I think we all agree that it’s fun
hearing how happy former adopters
are having found their beloved pet
from People for Pets or really any
rescue facility for that matter,” Storey
said.
“This event brings us all together
and helps make sure we can keep
making these connections between
humans and their furry kids!” F
Road Trippin’
Artists showcase their work and their work space
The road trip is a classic American
pastime. Sometimes they simply
serve as a vacation. Sometimes
they can be considered a rite of passage.
For 14 years area artisans have
put together a road trip of their own
and everyone is invited to come along
for the ride.
This year’s Artisans Road Trip will be
Saturday, Oct.14 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
and Sunday, Oct. 15 from noon-5 p.m.
A.R.T. is a free self-driving studio
tour with more than 30 stops at the
home studios of artists, as well as
galleries where artists have chosen to
display their work.
Bruce Morrison has been a member
of A.R.T. since the beginning and will
be opening up his rural Sutherland
studio once again.
“The goal at the beginning was to
have some sort of organized event,
to get work seen,” Morrison said. “As
opposed to bringing work to galleries
and putting together an exhibit, it’s
a way to bring people to the artists.
I think we’ve accomplished that goal
and now it’s also grown into a much
bigger event.”
Artists now have several avenues
through which their art can be seen.
“We’re now exhibiting as a group
throughout the spring, summer and
winter becoming a vehicle for artists
to be seen in more places,” Morrison
said. “Many artists couldn’t have their
own show because maybe they’ve
only done a couple pieces that year,
but can bring them to a group show.”
In the decade-plus run of the road
trip, Morrison has missed only one
chance to show his studio to visitors.
“In 2007 we were rebuilding the
studio and at the time of the road trip
it had no roof,” Morrison said with
a laugh. “And it rained that weekend
so people would have been wading
through a pool if they’d have come by!”
With no such projects in the works
this year, Morrison looks forward
to once again inviting visitors to see
where he works.
Morrison specializes in photography,
painting, colored pencil and
printmaking, mostly covering the
landscapes and habitat near his home.
Sometimes he works en plein air,
directly from the scene of his inspiriation,
other times he works using photographs
as reference points.
“Sometimes when I’m taking pictures
I’ll see something that’s pretty
cool but not quite clicking at the
moment and I can work from the
photos later,” Morrison said. “When
I’m photographing birds and things
it’s fun and usually for reference for
a painting or colored pencil drawing
later. Sometimes I just like the photograph
the best.”
During Artisans Road Trip, Morrison
enjoys meeting new people and
seeing those people in turn spread the
word about the great artwork being
done in northwest Iowa.
“It’s fun for them to see the studio
too, which has a story in itself since
it used to house sheep and chickens
at different points in time,” Morrison
said. “I enjoy seeing their reactions
when they step on the deck. I don’t
think most people realize we have
such nice views in O’Brien County.”
In O’Brien County, and beyond,
visitors enjoying the Artisans Road Trip
will get to see where artists get their
inspiration, and where they get down
to the business of creating their art.
Morrison suggests people interested
should visit the website, www.artisansroadtrip.com,
where they can find
links to each artist’s work, as well as
maps to each location.
“Many are concentrated in certains
areas so if you’re short on time you can
find a few clustered close together, or
spend parts of both days seeing more
places, and stop and see me along the
way!,” Morrison said. “It’s a great way
to get out and enjoy the day, see different
artists and different types of work
including painting, pottery, sculpture,
and jewelry. It’s a really good outing
for the weekend.” F
Icky Animals
Tots learn about creepy critters
All manner of creatures
can be found just outside
your door. Bugs, spiders,
snakes and other such critters
may not get as much love as
their more cuddly counterparts,
but they have an important
role in the ecosystem
nonetheless.
Toddlers taking in the next
installment of Nature Tots will
learn all about these creatures
and their roles in nature.
“Icky Animals” will take
place Wednesday, Oct. 11,
with one session at 10:30 a.m.
and another at 1:30 p.m. at
the Dickinson County Nature
Center. Space is limited to 25
children per session so preregistration
is recommended.
“We’ll start out going on an
animal hunt, if you will,” said
Bryanna Kuhlman, the nature
center’s environmental education
coordinator.
Artificial rubber, plastic or
papper snakes, spiders, frogs
and more, will be placed
around the nature center in
what would be their normal
natural habitat.
After the outdoor adventure
visitors will get a chance to see
some of the real thing.
“They’ll get an up close look at
our toad, frog and tarantula, and
a chance to touch a snake,” Kuhlman
said. “We’ll also take a trip to
the nature center’s bat cave.”
Part of the main points of this
installment of Nature Tots will
be to explain the importance of
these particular creatures.
Kuhlman said they’ll also
talk about what they should do
if they came across any of these
creatures in the wild.
“We’ll talk about why they’re
important to the habitat and
ecosystem and how they’re
good for the environment,”
Kuhlman said. “They can be
scary to some but if we start
them learning young hopefully
In her first year helping lead
the educational series of events,
Kuhlman has really enjoyed
the enthusiasm shown by her
young pupils.
“They’re so excited to see
everything and to be outside,”
Kuhlman said. “Having the opportunity
to see things at their
level and see their enthusiasm
has been great. Something as
simple as acorns at our last
event may not be exciting to
adults but the kids thought it
was the coolest thing ever.”
Kuhlman hopes the children
attending Nature Tots take home
what they learn and spread their
enthusiasm for nature.
“I hope everyone take the
Get your treats early
Trick or Treat Hike set for Oct. 14
Halloween is coming early at Oak
Grove Park.
Once again this year, the Sioux
County Conservation Board is inviting
kids ages 12 and under to come
and trick or treat in costume at Oak
Grove Park on Saturday, Oct. 14, from
5:30-8 p.m.
The Trick or Treat Hike has been going
on since 2004.
“When I first started in 1998 we
were doing a skit hike where there
were volunteers along the trail
and groups of 30 people would go
through at a time and listen to the
skits,” said Sunday Ford, the assistant
director and environmental education
coordinator with the Sioux County
Conservation Board. “It got to where
it was tough to get the time for the
volunteers to practice, so I suggested
why don’t we just do a trick or treat in
the campground.”
They decided to help fill the campground
with people that they would
offer free camping on Friday and
Saturday night if people would bring
enough candy to pass out to all the
trick-or-treaters.
Over the years, the event has grown
and grown.
It expanded from only taking place
in the Deer Run Campground to filling
both Deer Run and Turkey Ridge
Campgrounds. There are 19 camp
sites in Turkey Ridge and 57 in Deer
Run. They don’t fill all the tent sites,
but some people do rent cabins and
then bring their candy to the campsite
to set up.
The people have to bring enough
candy for more than 700 kids. Last
year, Ford said they had 730 trickor-treaters.
And that’s just the kids. It
doesn’t include the rest of the family
that usually tags along for the event.
The campsites are open for reservations
the day after Labor Day and they
are always filled quickly.
“This year the phone calls started
coming in on Tuesday at about 8
a.m. and a little after 9 we were full,”
Ford said. “We have a lot of people
who return year after year and a lot
of newbies too. People can reserve a
site for themselves and for someone
else and it’s a fun way to bring friends
together.”
No pre-registration is needed for the
trick-or-treaters.
There will be a luminary trail leading
between the campgrounds and
then people can make their way down
to the river for a bonfire.
The entire evening is a fun one for
both campers and trick-or-treaters.
And for the people who work to organize
it every year.
“When I think about what I like
most about the event, what comes to
mind is a picture of all different ages
of kids in costumes, the leaves turning
and people — families — enjoying
the outdoors and the campground
together,” Ford said. “The luminaries
that light the way are milk jugs with
candles in them. It’s just beautiful at
night.” F
Piles of pumpkins
Fulfill your fall to-do list at Hawk Valley Garden
A
small family enterprise has
reached it’s 15th anniversary.
Hawk Valley Garden maintains
the same family-friendly atmosphere,
and continues to showcase quite a
variety of heirloom pumpkins and
gourds at the family home just east
of Spencer.
Hawk Valley is open 4-7 p.m. during
weekdays and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on
weekends. They are closed on Mondays.
Guests this year can expect a particularly
large bounty.
“We had a really good crop this year
and an extended picking season,” said
owner Sue Loring. “Normally we pick
a couple times and we may be able to
pick three or four times this year.”
That means more jack-o-lanterns,
cinderellas, blue jarradales and all
kinds of pumpkins for carving, decorating
and pie making.
“Blaze” pumpkins were sold at
Hawk Valley last year for the first time,
and this year they grew some of their
own. They continue to focus on heirloom
varieties and pride themselves
on being a true pumpkin market.
The family operation is in full swing
this year as Sue’s son, Zach, has been
on hand to help after graduating from
college. Her daughter, Liz, continues
in her role as manager. Sue and her
husband, Bruce, continue to do a little
bit of everything.
They continue to welcome customers
from all over the state and beyond
to their own backyard for a bit of fall
pumpkin shopping.
Part of the growing customer base
is a growing presence online for the
garden.
“We keep up our online presence
with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,”
Loring said. “We try to keep things as
up-to-date as best as possible.”
That means informing customers
when they decide to extend their
hours on a particular day, what varieties
are on hand, as well as any potential
changes due to weather.
This constant communication has
brought in new customers as well.
“I enjoy the fact that people who
follow us online come out to visit.
I’ve had one from Waterloo come all
the way with her whole family after
conversing on Facebook,” Loring said.
“We have people that come from
Sioux Falls and even from northern
Minnesota.”
A loyal customer base and wide
variety of pumpkins on display contributes
to the small operation’s continuing
popularity.
They’ve made several Top 10 lists including
the number six spot on Travel
Iowa’s list of pumpkin patches.
“That’s something that boggles my
mind. It’s wonderful and wouldn’t
happen without great people and repeat
customers that we see every year,”
Loring said.
A big draw according to Loring, is
Hawk Valley’s pumpkin stackers as
well as custom painted pumpkins.
“We take the time to make an art of
it,” Loring said.
There are, of course, several Iowa
Hawkeye and Iowa State Cyclone
pumpkins, as well as simple greetings
painted in numerous colors.
A cowboy scene was painted on one
pumpkin this year for the Branding
Iron Cafe at the Clay County Fair.
There are also scenes and characters
from the Disney film “Frozen” as well
as depictions of the Minions from the
“Despicable Me” film franchise.
Sue and Liz spend Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday nights painting
pumpkins and Sue estimates about
half are ready-to-go and half are custom
orders.
“Last year we did a lot of breast
cancer awareness pumpkins donating
them to hospitals and cancer centers.
Doing special things like that and
being able to give back makes us the
most happy,” Loring said.
Loring says Saturday mornings are
the best time to see the full range of
offerings at Hawk Valley Garden.
Each year they continue to learn
what works best and expand those
offerings to best meet and exceed the
expectations of their customers. F
