Side Trips
My family does not like raisins.
So while I keep a small container of
raisins in the pantry to occasionally
throw into my morning oatmeal, I rarely cook
with them.
Last week I needed
cinnamon raisin bread
for a recipe we were going
to photograph for
our sister publication
OKOBOJI Magazine. I
used my bread machine
to prepare the dough,
and since I added the
raisins right at the
beginning, they got
broken apart into little
pieces during the kneading
process.
I baked the bread in
MYRNA
WAGNER
a loaf pan for traditional shaped slices, but
my loaf turned out a little lopsided and I was
concerned of how it would photograph.
I trimmed one end cap to see if the lopsided
loaf would be salvageable and decided it would
do. I then stored the bread in a zip-top bag until
I needed it.
Life got busy for the next few days, and the
photo shoot still hadn’t taken place. Jeff, seeing
that cut loaf of bread still in the fridge on
a night when I was getting home late, decided
I shouldn’t have to cook, and would just have
bread instead.
I’m not sure whose facial expression was
worse — his or mine — when I arrived home
and he announced, “That bread you made was
pretty good.”
After staring at him in dismay, I heard myself
ask, “Why on earth would you eat RAISIN
bread?”
“Well, you really couldn’t tell,” he said.
“There weren’t any big raisins and it tasted
more like cinnamon.”
No sense crying over sliced bread, and I had
enough ingredients for a second loaf. Good
news is the second loaf looked better than the
first.
