People for Pets
People For Pets is a non-profit
organization devoted to finding loving
homes for abandoned pets by
dedicated volunteers who put in an
average of 1500 hours of service
per month. We have an agreement
with the city of Spencer, IA, to find
homes for all stray cats and dogs
not claimed within three business
days. Before this agreement was
made, these loving pets were put
to sleep!
People For Pets helps pets find
loving homes and people find loving
pets. We also promote spaying
and neutering to help control the
pet population. All dogs/cats are
spayed/neutered prior to adoption
unless they are too young or have
not yet been scheduled for the procedure.

You are invited to celebrate Oktoberfest,
People for Pets-style,
at PetOberfest.
For the second year, People for
Pets will be hosting their PetOberfest
fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 14 from
5-8 p.m. at the Spencer Community
Theatre.
While the night is about having lots
of fun with a distinctly German flair,
it’s also about raising awareness and
money for People For Pets.
“The purpose is to bring awareness
to the shelter, celebrate all the
wonderful people that support and
volunteer to make People for Pets a
success, and to raise money to keep
our shelter going, as it is completely
supported by donations and has no
government funding,” said Heather
Storey with People for Pets. “This
will help ensure that we can continue
to rehabilitate and care for rescued
animals as we work to find them their
forever homes.”
The night will include lots of fun
entertainment for all.
The band Polka Police will be providing
live music for the event, and
according to Storey, the band puts a
“really fun spin on polka with their
rockin’ parodies, covers and some
original music as well.”
To keep with the German style,
they’ll also be providing some interesting
German-inspired foods such
as brats, smoked salmon and capers
canapes, tomato and basil caprese
kabobs, shrimp cups, artichoke bites
and a number of desserts.
And it would be an Oktoberfest
party without one special drink.
“We also have West O Beer on tap,
domestic beer, an assortment of wine
and non-alcoholic beverages as well,”
Storey added.
The organizers will be bringing
back the popular “Wine Wall” where
a small donation allows participants
to enter into a drawing for a “mystery”
bottle of wine whose value may be as
much as $100.
There will also be a live auction as
well.
There will be a number of prizes
auctioned off including a fat tire
bike, an Okoboji boat cruise, indoor
fireplace, Cyclone’s patio chairs and
tickets, a Crown Royal quilt, weekend
getaways, a YMCA membership and
more.
It’s a fun night for all, including the
organizers.
“Aside from all the fun interacting
with people who support the shelter
and partaking in the events that evening,
I think we all agree that it’s fun
hearing how happy former adopters
are having found their beloved pet
from People for Pets or really any
rescue facility for that matter,” Storey
said.
“This event brings us all together
and helps make sure we can keep
making these connections between
humans and their furry kids!” F
