Important Announcement<br />

At the <strong>October</strong> BNA meeting, our by-laws require electing the 2018<br />

officers. The Secretary and Treasurer positions are open for<br />

nominations. The responsibilities of these two positions are:<br />

Secretary - Attend meetings and take notes<br />

- Type notes and submit minutes to chair<br />

- Read and conduct approval of prior meeting<br />

minutes<br />

- Obtain substitute if not able to attend<br />

- Attend Steering Committee meetings<br />

(as many as possible)<br />

Treasurer - Maintain BNA checking account<br />

- Write Mini-Grant proposal as agreed upon<br />

by the steering committee<br />

- Submit event volunteer hours for grant<br />

reimbursements and write checks<br />

- Give treasury reports when required<br />

- Attend Steering Committee meetings<br />

(as many as possible)<br />

The Chair and V. Chair will continue in their<br />

respective positions upon re-election.<br />

Monte Cristo Awards<br />

Recipients of the <strong>2017</strong> Monte Cristo Awards will be announced<br />

at a ceremony on Thursday, <strong>October</strong> 12th at 6:30 PM the<br />

Snohomish County PUD auditorium, 2320 California Street.<br />

Seven <strong>Bayside</strong> homes and businesses will receive awards this<br />

year. Don’t miss out on this fun event to find out who the<br />

winners are and help us honor them for helping make <strong>Bayside</strong><br />

so beautiful! All are welcome to attend. Learn more at<br />

The annual Monte Cristo awards recognize a select group of <strong>Everett</strong><br />

residents and business owners for their extensive efforts to make<br />

their homes and businesses attractive and to keep them well<br />

maintained. Awards are given in four categories: neighborhoodfriendly<br />

business, the pride of the neighborhood, rejuvenation, and<br />

transformation, and the new green gardening category, which<br />

recognizes beautiful properties that have environmentally friendly<br />

landscaping. Hours:<br />

of <strong>Everett</strong>." It is written by one of our own, longtime <strong>Everett</strong><br />

residents: is now on the shelves and will be selling the book with<br />

proceeds to benefit the Friends of the <strong>Everett</strong> Public Library on<br />

where Aileen is also holding a book signing at 2:00 to 3:30 PM.<br />

Community Sparks funding is available to community groups for projects that build<br />

stronger connections within <strong>Everett</strong> city limits. Up to $500 of eligible expenses for your<br />

project or event are reimbursable with Community Sparks funds and must be matched<br />

with volunteer labor and/or monetary or in-kind donations. Applications will be reviewed biweekly<br />

and selected by City of <strong>Everett</strong> staff. Applications submitted after Oct. 2 will not be<br />

considered for <strong>2017</strong>. All awarded projects must be complete by Dec. 9. View program<br />

Emergency Preparedness<br />

Do Thing - <strong>October</strong><br />

GOAL FOR OCTOBER: Be able to safely meet your basic needs during<br />

an electrical outage.<br />

1. Have flashlights ready in an easily accessible place and check batteries in flashlights and radios.<br />

Using battery operated lights are safer than candles. Be sure to store extra batteries.<br />

2. Acquire and learn how to safely use a portable generator. Using a properly connected generator<br />

of adequate size during a power outage will reduce or almost eliminate the impact a power outage<br />

has on your life. Before you buy, talk to an electrician and think about what you want your generator<br />

to run. Generators can be used to keep food cool, provide lights and electricity for phones and<br />

television, power furnace blowers and pumps. The best way to use a portable generator is to<br />

connect it to your home using a transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician. This will keep the<br />

power from overloading the wiring in your home. It will also keep the power from your generator<br />

from traveling back into the power lines, which can injure or kill people working on power lines, or<br />

can unexpectedly re-energize downed power lines near your home. You may also connect<br />

equipment directly to the outlets on the generator, but be sure that any extension cords are of the<br />

proper length and gauge to handle the power requirements.<br />

Remember: Always run generators outside. Never use a generator inside a house, in a basement,<br />

or garage. Never use a cord from a generator to backfeed a circuit in your house.<br />

3. Create a power outage plan and decide what you can do before, during and after a power outage<br />

to minimize the effect on your household.<br />

electing officers for 2018 and our<br />

month for planning the grant funds<br />

for next year. The <strong>Bayside</strong><br />

Neighborhood Association has<br />

traditionally planned the following<br />

events/projects:<br />

The City of <strong>Everett</strong> offers $2000.00<br />

each year in grants for community<br />

events that are matched with<br />

volunteer hours. BNA wants to<br />

utilize all these funds. Additional<br />

projects/events could be planned<br />

and/or coordinated with other<br />

organizations such as the schools or<br />

neighborhoods. Do you or someone<br />

you know have an idea for a<br />

community project or event for 2018?<br />

Also, there are opportunities to<br />

volunteer to coordinate our<br />

traditional annually planned<br />
