NEWS
News from aboard
and ashore.
Crosswords and Cartoons.
We are delighted to announce a number of special
crossings in association with two legendary
publications from the Big Apple. Firstly we will be
welcoming aboard Deb Amlen, Joel Fagliano
and Ben Zimmer from The New York Times to
celebrate the 75th anniversary of the newspaper’s
crossword. You will be able to put your verbal skills
and wordplay to the test during daily game sessions,
lectures and activities as part of “The Crossword
Crossing” on Queen Mary 2, departing New York
on December 8, 2017 (M745).
A guest from a galaxy
far, far away…
Fans of Star Wars and the silver screen in
general were in for a treat on Queen Elizabeth’s
recent Baltic cruise. During the first few days,
we welcomed aboard Andrew Smith, the
Corporate Affairs Director of Pinewood Studios.
Alongside his in-depth knowledge of the filmmaking
process that delighted guests during
his popular talks, Andrew also brought aboard
two particularly exciting items. The first was a
genuine Oscar statuette, the most coveted prize
in the film world. The second was a full Star Wars
Stormtrooper costume, modeled below by one
of Queen Elizabeth’s theater technicians Roberto,
on the bridge with Andrew and Captain Hashmi.
Supporting Parsons School of Design.
Currently ranked as the No.1 Art and Design
School in the United States, Parsons School
of Design is widely regarded as one of the
most prestigious of its type in the world. This
August, six students from the school joined
us to showcase their collections during our
second Transatlantic Fashion Week. This was
an incredibly rewarding opportunity for the
talented individuals involved.
We also wanted to support the school more
generally. So we donated a Transatlantic
Crossing in a Queens Grill Suite for their annual
fundraising auction, which welcomed 700 guests
from the fashion industry and New York society.
The event took place on May 22 at Pier Sixty,
featuring auctioneer Lydia Fenet, from Christie’s
Auction House – and immaculately dressed
Cunard bellboys throughout the evening. We are
delighted the crossing raised $18,000 towards
the impressive overall total of $2.3 million.
Mulberry on Queen Mary 2.
On Thursday July 13 an iconic British brand
took up residence in our flagship’s boutiques:
Mulberry, celebrated for its classic designs and
the largest producer of leather goods in the
UK. This is the first Mulberry collection at sea
and will remain exclusive to Queen Mary 2 until
early next year. Over the coming months, guests
will be able to browse Mulberry’s elegant
Autumn/Winter 2017 range of handbags,
fashion accessories and small leather goods.
This includes iconic styles, such as the
Bayswater, alongside new designs, available
both in core colors and in seasonal shades.
Honoring our Greatest
Generations.
In partnership with The Greatest Generations
Foundation, we were proud to pay tribute to
World War II heroes during Queen Mary 2’s
August 4 Transatlantic Crossing. Veterans from
the conflict hosted Q&A sessions on topics that
When you think of The New Yorker, what may often
come to mind are its famous covers and cartoons
– and a number of celebrated cartoonists from the
publication will be joining us in the second half of
next year. For over 90 years, The New Yorker has
showcased America’s funniest cartoonists. Four of
them – Benjamin Schwartz, Matthew Diffee, Emily
Flake and David Sipress – will join us next year to host
exclusive drawing sessions and workshops during
five eastbound Transatlantic Crossings between
June and November 2018.
A unique musical experience.
Queen Mary 2’s guests were treated to a
transatlantic theatrical experience with
a difference this August. Fresh from an
acclaimed recent run at Zédel in London’s
West End, After You delivered its inventive
take on the themes of falling in love, the
price of conventional success and the things
we sometimes need to keep for ourselves.
What makes the show stand out is that
its story continues to evolve. During the
August 4 Westbound Crossing and
August 12 Eastbound Crossing, guests
were able to watch how the rehearsals
developed each day. At the end of each
crossing, there was a matinee performance
in the Royal Court Theatre, each a total
one-off version of this truly unique show.
Success at the ULTRAS awards.
If you are a regular reader of The Telegraph, you may have already seen the results from
this year’s ULTRA awards 2017, which recognize excellence across the travel industry.
We were immensely proud to be named Best Large Luxury Cruise Line. So we would like to
take the opportunity to thank you if you were among the Telegraph readers who voted for us.
An anniversary of a Cunard legend.
This December will mark 50 years since the original
Queen Mary took up residence in her new home
of Long Beach in California after more than 30
years’ service with Cunard. To mark the milestone,
she will feature the new Cunard Room on board,
showcasing Cunard’s history as well as highlighting
Cunard’s current ocean travel offerings.
"Their talks were
incredibly informative
and frequently moving"
included the battle for the Atlantic, first-hand
accounts of Pearl Harbor, the D-Day landings
and the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes. Their
talks were incredibly informative and frequently
moving, and we thank them for joining us.
ON BOARD
Champagne Laurent-Perrier
for all those sparkling moments on board.
There will, almost certainly, be
many special occasions during
your cruise when nothing seems
more appropriate than a perfectly
chilled glass of bubbly. So we
are sure you will be as delighted
as we are that, as from June,
Laurent-Perrier has become the
Champagne of choice on our ships.
Chocolate heaven
among the stars.
Within Queen Victoria’s restyled Chart Room, a setting inspired
by the constellations, you will find sweet temptations.
Our Godiva menu brings you gourmet
Belgian chocolate in many decadent
forms. Succumb to a velvety smooth
Chocolixir for sipping, whether refreshingly
chilled, or comfortingly hot and topped with
a slowly melting chocolate.
You may prefer to deliberate over the selection
of luxurious white, milk and dark chocolates that
will catch your eye on the Godiva Chocolate Table.
Be unashamedly indulgent by ordering
a mouthwatering trio of mini desserts –
a chocolate cheesecake, a triple chocolate
brownie and a dark chocolate and salted
caramel tartlet. Perhaps the most hedonistic
experience of them is the wickedly delicious
fondue. After all, how could anyone resist
smothering fresh strawberries, banana slices,
marshmallows or croissant morsels in a rich
ganache of white, milk or dark chocolate? C
Laurent-Perrier is a name that carries great
prestige. The family-owned house focuses all
of its considerable expertise on Champagne,
and Champagne alone, as it has since 1812. This
is perhaps why it has been known for innovation
as much as quality, not least for pioneering the
saignée method of making rosé Champagne by
bleeding the color from the skins of the Pinot Noir
grape, to get its iconic color and flavor, rather than
a conventional blend of red and white. The result
was the acclaimed Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé,
first launched in 1968 and, naturally, available for
you to try on board.
Beside the signature La Cuvée, the Ultra Brut and
the Grand Siècle, you will also find a Laurent-
Perrier Vintage 2007 on our Champagne lists.
Laurent-Perrier has chosen to make vintages
more selectively and less frequently than other
houses, only choosing the very best years. This
vintage has produced a fresh, elegant Champagne,
with hints of white peach and Mirabelle plum. The
year was a special one for us too of course, being
when Queen Victoria made her debut.
You can now find our full Laurent-Perrier offering
on the new Gin & Fizz Menu in Queen Victoria’s
elegant Midships Lounge. We have also recently
introduced the luxurious Laurent-Perrier
Champagne Lounge on Queen Mary 2, an elegant
spot in the heart of the ship, where you can
sample our complete collection of Laurent-Perrier
Champagnes, served in Waterford crystal.
Beside these lounges particularly dedicated to
Champagne, it goes without saying that you can
always order a flute or two in venues across our
ships, including your restaurant. You can also
indulge in Laurent-Perrier as part of our Champagne
Afternoon Tea, or to celebrate the start of your
cruise at our memorable “Sailaway” events. C
Tea served with exquisite artistry.
Another reason to visit the Chart Room, Tea Forté delivers an
ultra-premium experience, whatever your tastes.
In every cup, you will appreciate the benefits
of Tea Forté’s close relationship with their
growers and the artistry of their handcrafted
pyramid-shaped infuser. So sip your pick of their
black teas, green teas or even a rare white tea.
Naturally, there are herbal varieties too – six in
fact – whose delicate flavors include rooibos
herb with a hint of berries and vanilla in Africa
Solstice, the soothing Chamomile Citrus and the
tang of Ginger Lemongrass.
"The exceptional tea experience"
For ultimate refreshment with a dash of drama,
you will want to order Tea Forté’s Tea Over Ice, ®
presented in a pair of pitchers stacked in the shape
of a pyramid. Your waiter will flash chill the tea in
the top pitcher by pouring it into the ice-filled lower
pitcher at your table. Go for a Ceylon Gold, or one
of four subtle fruity combinations – Blood Orange,
Mango Peach, Ginger Pear and Raspberry Nectar. C
ON BOARD
Cunard and Pickering’s,
a sophisticated blend.
Gin has been through something of an evolution over recent times.
Craft distilleries are growing in popularity and rewarding aficionados
with a wealth of flavorsome small-batch varieties. Our collaboration with
Edinburgh-based Pickering’s Gin brings this concept to Queen Victoria
with the creation of three exclusive gins inspired by our three Queens.
Pickering’s Gin was a perfect choice for us
because of their emphasis on quality, and
they have been creating award-winning
premium gins using copper stills for over a
decade. There is also a historic link between
us. Marcus Pickering (pictured), the company’s
co-founder with Matthew Gammell, is the great
nephew of Cunard Captain George Gibbons, who
sailed on our ships between 1909 and 1944.
Together Pickering’s Gin and our drinks experts
have created 3 Queens Gin, exclusively served on
Cunard. Our guests are already enjoying the first
batch of individually numbered bottles on board,
with a distinctive blend for each of our current
Queens. The Queen Victoria label is also available
on draught from a copper gin tap – the only one
of its kind at sea – on Queen Victoria. C
3 QUEENS GIN
Each blend contains key botanicals
inspired by the destinations of the world
most associated with each ship.
Queen Victoria.
A sampling of the Mediterranean, with
blood orange, lemon myrtle and olive leaf.
Queen Mary 2.
A hint of the Americas, with apple,
cinnamon and cherry plus essence
of pine and raspberry leaf.
Queen Elizabeth.
A taste of the Orient, uniquely spiced
with notes of lotus root, star anise,
kaffir lime leaf and cardamom.
Each also includes a recommendation
for a specific tonic and garnishes
to create the perfect G&T.
Gin & Fizz adds a sparkle
to every evening.
We are still in the early days of Queen Victoria’s new look following her
refurbishment. Even so, we can say with some confidence that her
Midships Lounge is shaping up to be one of our favorite spots on board.
During sophisticated evenings there, gin
connoisseurs can browse the pages of our
beautifully illustrated Gin & Fizz menu.
This obviously includes our wonderful 3 Queens
Gins, shown opposite, and the Laurent-Perrier
selection detailed on page 6. But that is just the
start of the story.
British gins feature predominantly, as you would
expect, though you will also find choices from
Germany, France, Spain, USA and Australia to
tempt your palate and pique your curiosity.
Every Gin includes a “perfect served” – a tonic
and garnish pairing to bring out the best of your
chosen gin and the key botanicals which create
its unique taste.
Wherever it is from and whatever its flavor, our
bartenders serve every perfect serve impeccably
in a “Copa de Balon,” a rounded glass with a stem
that is perfect for a G&T. C
The impressive gin selection includes a wealth
of choice, from classic tastes to those featuring
fruit, citrus, juniper, spices, herbs and floral notes.
From beautiful menus to
magnificent venues.
We have now served up a sampling of the iced teas, chilled Champagnes and hot chocolates you can
sip aboard Queen Victoria following her refit. So it is time to relax with a closer look at two wonderfully
atmospheric new bars that offer a nod to classic venues from Cunarders past. Each has a distinct
personality, reflected in its menu, that will bring a fresh elegance to your sociable evenings on board.
Be guided by the stars in the Chart Room.
Those bright shining lights in the night sky have long pointed the way for
sea travelers. They still can in the atmospheric surroundings of the Chart
Artistic freedom on
Queen Victoria.
When Queen Victoria arrived in Gibraltar on June 25, artist
Christian Hook stepped aboard and received a rare accolade
in the Queens Room – the Freedom of the City of Gibraltar.
Christian, who was born and grew up
in Gibraltar, had joined the cruise for
two nights to unveil a new collection
of original artwork, the “Darwin Series,” at
Clarendon Fine Art. He also took part in a Q&A
session with guests in the Royal Court Theatre
and gave a live painting demonstration. He rose
to prominence in 2014 when he was named
the “Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year,” and his
work already hangs in the Scottish National
Gallery and the Museum of Liverpool.
Christian’s celebrity portraits have helped to
establish and enhance his reputation on the
international stage, and his subjects have
included The Duchess of York, Sir Ian McKellen,
Amir Khan and Dame Kirstin Scott Thomas.
In parallel to his portraiture, Christian has
also produced a series of grand equestrian
paintings, beautifully capturing the grace,
movement and power of horses.
During the ceremony on board, which was
attended by local dignitaries and Captain
Andrew Hall, the Mayor of Gibraltar, Kaiane
Aldorino Lopez, recognized Christian as a great
ambassador and role model. His Excellency
the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian
Picardo, bestowed the honor upon Christian
to acknowledge his contribution to the
development of the arts in his home country.
“I am deeply honored to receive this
award whilst docked in Gibraltar,” said
Christian. “Hopefully my example will
help to inspire a younger generation
of Gibraltarian artists to follow their
dreams. It was a privilege to be able
to unveil my new series on board
Queen Victoria and I would like to
thank all members of the ship’s
company for being so friendly
and helpful.” C
FEATURE
The Falklands Campaign.
Remembering the conflict, 35 years on.
On April 2, 1982, after weeks of
tension, Argentine troops invaded
the Falkland Islands, the remote
UK territory in the South Atlantic.
It was the start of a short-lived
yet bitter campaign to reclaim
the archipelago.
Cunard ships had served the nation in
every major conflict since the Crimean
War in 1853, and so it would be again. On
May 4, 1982, the Government requisitioned QE2
for service while she was on her way home to
Southampton from Philadelphia. The following
day, conversion work began. Helicopter landing
pads were constructed forward on the Quarter
Deck and over the two aft swimming pools.
Paintings and furniture were removed and piping
for refueling at sea was laid through passenger
areas. Equipment, rations, vehicles, fuel and
spare parts were loaded aboard – much even
had to be stored on the open deck.
To man the ship Cunard asked for 650 volunteers
from among its employees to travel to the war
zone; more than 1,000 bravely offered their
services. When QE2 set off under the command
of Captain Peter Jackson on May 12, they were
joined by the 3,000 men of the Fifth Infantry
Brigade, which was comprised of units of the
Scots Guards, the Welsh Guards and the Gurkha
Rifles, along with naval personnel.
After pausing in Freetown, Sierra Leone, every
porthole was covered with black plastic to provide
a total blackout and, as QE2 edged closer to the
conflict zone, the navigation lights were turned
off, along with the radar to silence the ship
electronically. Daunting icefields lay ahead on the
approach to South Georgia, and QE2 encountered
huge icebergs – many bigger than she was –
and fog that reduced visibility to less than a mile.
During the night of May 26 and the early hours
of the following morning, the crew switched
on the radar every half hour; at one point over
100 icebergs showed up on the screen. Captain
Jackson would subsequently write, “never have
I known such a harrowing experience.”
"QE2 encountered huge
icebergs – many bigger
than she was"
Later that day, May 27, 1982, QE2 reached
Cumberland Bay on South Georgia. She anchored
offshore for a logistically difficult transfer of
troops and supplies to other vessels. The transfer
took until May 29, and 640 survivors from the
HMS Ardent, HMS Coventry and HMS Antelope,
all sunk by Argentine aircraft, came aboard for
the journey back to Ascension Island. Cunard’s
MV Atlantic Conveyor, who was carrying troops
and helicopters, also fell victim to aerial strikes.
The container ship sank with the loss of six
military personnel and six Cunard crew, including
the ship’s master, Captain Ian North, who
posthumously received the Distinguished Service
Cross (DSC).
Shortly before reaching Ascension, QE2 received
orders from the Ministry of Defence on June 4 to
proceed instead to Southampton. On the morning
of June 11, QE2 passed the Isle of Wight with
a royal greeting by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth
The Queen Mother, waving from the Royal Yacht
Britannia. Three days later, British Forces took
Port Stanley, a ceasefire was declared and
Argentina’s troops surrendered, signaling the
end of the war.
Two moments of remembrance.
On Friday May 19, 2017, we hosted a
commemorative lunch in Southampton
aboard Queen Elizabeth, namesake of our
former flagship, in conjunction with the South
Atlantic Medal Association 1982 (Wales).
Around 140 guests joined us on board,
including the Mayor of Southampton and
the Mayor of the Port, as well as a number
of serving officers in the Royal Navy. We also
welcomed back many of those who worked
for Cunard and had volunteered for the
treacherous journey to the Falklands on QE2.
Also present were Lord West of Spithead and
Captain Hart-Dyke, Masters of HMS Ardent
and HMS Coventry respectively.
Following a guided tour of Queen Elizabeth, a
Champagne reception in the Queens Room included
speeches from Captain Thorhauge and Simon
Palethorpe, Cunard’s Senior Vice President. During
the occasion, Associated British Ports Director
Alastair Welch presented Captain Thorhauge with
a painting of QE2 on her return from the Falklands.
After a three-course lunch in the Britannia
Restaurant, Captain Hashmi, who had been one
of those who traveled with the British Task Force,
read the poem “Heroes” by David Partridge before
all present stood for a minute’s silence to honor
those who never came home.
The following week saw a special Service of
Remembrance, led by the Rector of Liverpool,
the Revd Dr Crispin Pailing, at Liverpool Parish
Church. It took place on Thursday May 25, the
date upon which – 35 years earlier – Argentine
Exocet missiles had struck our Liverpoolregistered
container ship, Atlantic Conveyor,
with the subsequent loss of 12 lives.
During the service, Queen Elizabeth’s Master,
Captain Hashmi, gave a poignant reading, and
Angus Struthers, Cunard Vice President Marketing,
also addressed the congregation before laying
a wreath at the Atlantic Conveyor Memorial in
the church grounds on the waterfront. C
Congratulations, Captain Philpott.
A Master’s
farewell.
On May 8, 2017, Captain Kevin Oprey guided
our flagship along Southampton Water and
into the Ocean Dock for one final time as
she completed her World Voyage.
On July 4, Queen Victoria hosted a wonderful Cunard celebration as Captain Peter Philpott and
Dawn-Marie Taylor married on board. It was a magical finale to Captain Philpott’s five years
at the helm, just a few weeks before he took up his new role as master of Queen Mary 2.
Commodore Christopher Rynd conducted
the ceremony in Queen Victoria’s newly
refurbished Yacht Club, with around
60 officers and other members of the ship’s
company joining them for the occasion. The
happy couple then posed for wedding photos
around the ship, including this lovely picture in
front of the iconic red and black funnel. That
evening, the celebrations continued with
dinner in The Verandah restaurant.
The newlyweds were on their way towards the
beautiful medieval town of Kotor in Montenegro,
along Queen Victoria’s route from Rome to Venice.
Believe it or not, this wedding and honeymoon
cruise was Captain Philpott’s first experience
of being a guest on one of our ships!
The couple has another celebration on the
horizon – a wedding breakfast for family and
close friends in August in the Cotswolds. We are
sure you will join us in wishing them a very happy
future together. C
After 49 years at sea, Queen Mary 2’s
master had decided the time was right
to retire. We are honored that he spent
his final six years of service with us at Cunard.
Two days earlier, his colleagues had marked
the occasion at the Senior Officers Party. Robbie
Howie, Queen Mary 2’s Hotel General Manager,
had wished him well in a speech on behalf of all
the crew before two bellboys and Queen Mary 2’s
Communications Manager, Kirsty J Scott, brought
out a leaving gift. It was a special, one-off framed
edition of a Daily Program created by Kirsty, filled
with heartfelt messages for Captain Oprey from
family, colleagues, fellow Cunard captains and
even celebrity guests like Sir Jackie Stewart.
The Daily Activities page featured a run-through
of Captain Oprey’s last day at the helm, which
included a little creative writing!
During his last day, Captain Oprey and his wife
(below), Cheryl who had been aboard for five
weeks, attended a small farewell get-together
with the officers in G32. Their daughter and her
family joined them for one final lunch at the
Captain’s Table in the Britannia Restaurant.
Head office presented Captain Oprey with a
painting, a reproduction of his favorite artwork
on Queen Mary 2 featuring Caronia and the
original Queen Mary. As Captain Oprey departed,
our flagship sounded her horn in honor of her
former captain.
We are sure you will join us in wishing him all the
best for his well-earned retirement. Thank you
for everything, Captain Oprey! C
africaexcursions.
The call of the Cape.
Staying longer in Cape Town.
Should you be joining or leaving your ship here,
it is easy to extend your stay. Hotel choices,
amongst others include the Belmond Mount
Nelson hotel, part of our Flagship Collection
and known for its afternoon tea service.
A city of 3.5 million people, Cape Town is our gateway to South Africa, and delivers so much of what
draws visitors to this country. Cradled by mountains, it ticks plenty of dramatic scenery boxes and you
can easily fit in a game drive to discover Africa’s iconic wildlife during a day here. Of course,
there are the vibrancy and vitality of the multicultural “Mother City” itself.
Many flock to the historical landmarks
of Robben Island, the notorious
offshore former prison, and the District
Six Museum, both powerful reminders of an
apartheid past. The star-shaped Castle of Good
Hope, billed as the country’s oldest building
takes you back to a time of the earliest European
arrivals. The influence of settlers from the east
finds colorful form in the Bo-Kaap district at the
foot of Signal Hill, where Cape Town’s Muslim
community lives in the brightly painted houses.
For a dash more hustle and bustle, the
Greenmarket Square flea market entices you
with everything from batiks and beadwork to CDs
and sunglasses, often with street performers
or drummers adding to the wonderful chaos.
Close by is the Pan African Market, housed in
a Victorian national monument, complete with
ornate balconies, on historic Long Street. Inside,
vendors from a dozen or more African countries
tempt you with instruments, masks, sculptures
and curios that will make unusual souvenirs of
your trip. The V&A Waterfront is round the corner
too, the picturesque marina dotted with yachts,
eateries and jewelry boutiques.
The aromatic Cape Malay fusion cuisine may
set your taste buds buzzing too. From the raai
(barbecue) you might sample boerewors – sausages
spiced with coriander, cloves and nutmeg – or
sosaties, kebabs marinated in a curry and chutney
with pieces of onion and apricot. The simple
pleasure of the freshest of fresh fish is on many
menus too, just like lightly seared tuna steaks.
What to serve this with? Well, that leads us
neatly to Stellenbosch. This attractive, historic
university town is set in the heart of the rolling
Cape Winelands, whose acclaimed vineyards
have patterned the hills for three centuries.
A tasting at one of the acclaimed wine estates
is a must for many and will give you an insight
of what to order with your next meal.
As all four of our World Voyage visits to this port
in 2018 and 2019 are overnight stays, you can
experience an evening in Cape Town. So attend
a concert at Baxter Theatre, discover one of
countless atmospheric jazz venues or watch
Shakespeare al fresco at the Maynardville Open
Air Theatre. You could even take our scenic
night tour that reveals the beauty of Cape Town
twinkling with lights.
We simply cannot go any further without
a mention of Table Mountain, the majestic
city emblem. Some choose to hike up – and
others abseil down – but the cable car is a
much simpler way to reach the summit for
breathtaking views over the city and beyond.
Apparently, two couples tie the knot up here
each month, and who can blame them? Just
imagine how stunning those wedding photos
would be.
On its eastern slopes, stands the Kirstenbosch
National Botanical Gardens. To the south, the
incredible coastal road, affectionately known
"A tasting at one of the
acclaimed wine estates
is a must for many"
as “Chappies,” snakes its way between mighty
cliffs and vast ocean towards Chapman’s
Peak. If you keep driving towards the end of
the continent, you will reach the Cape of Good
Hope Nature Reserve and Cape Point, the
spot at which the waters of the Indian Ocean
meet those of the Atlantic. Here an incredible
diversity of flora and some of South Africa’s
highest sea cliffs await – and a funicular
railway ride will whisk you to the viewing
platform, while another 120 steps lead you
up to the lighthouse if you are feeling
particularly energetic.
A trip south of Cape Town often calls in at the
penguin colony at Boulders Beach too. But
that is just the start of the wildlife viewing
on offer in these parts. South Africa is, after
all, the land of the lion – not to mention the
cheetah, the leopard, giraffe, buffalo, rhino,
hippos, hyenas and zebra. You can scour the
savannah for these during an unforgettable
day-long game drive, or for longer if you add
FEATURE
Our flagship to the rescue.
While everyone who steps aboard appreciates our flagship, we doubt many have enjoyed the moment
as much as 73-year-old Mervyn Wheatley. After all, Queen Mary 2 had rescued him some 36 hours after
his yacht sustained serious damage halfway across the Atlantic.
The former Royal Marine was one of 17 solo
competitors in a race from Plymouth in the
UK to Newport in Rhode Island when a fierce
storm blew up. It battered his vessel, Tamarind,
with 49-foot waves and winds of up to 60 knots
(69 mph) in the early hours of Friday June 9.
Mervyn described how he was “rudely awakened”
at about 2am after being flung against the side
of the boat when the mast was forced beneath
the water. All the power had gone, the cabin was
filling with water and, as Mervyn lightheartedly
remarked later, his socks were floating
everywhere! It took over three hours to pump out
most of the water by hand. His radio beacon had
also been ripped out of its bracket; this triggered
a distress signal, which had been picked up by
coast guards back home and in Canada.
Several hours later, a C-130 Hercules appeared
overhead and tried, unsuccessfully, to drop
replacement radio equipment down to him.
Another half a day or more later, a merchant ship
arrived at the scene. However, its steep sides
made the prospect of getting aboard too daunting
and, as it approached, Mervyn asked the C-130 to
call it off, in fear of being dashed against its hull.
"Tamarind’s thirteenth
Transatlantic Crossing with
Mervyn proved to be its last"
By this point, the UK Coastguard had sent
a personal message to Queen Mary 2, 200 miles
away from Tamarind. She arrived nine hours later,
at around 1pm on Saturday June 10. The first
difficulty for Captain Wells was finding the stricken
yacht, as the sails were down and the hull was
mainly hidden by waves. The C-130 played a pivotal
role at this point, guiding our flagship towards
the ship from about 40 miles out, then dropping
smoke signals so Captain Wells could see its exact
position. To actually reach Mervyn, Queen Mary 2’s
crew had to lower the rescue boat 27 meters from
the Boat Deck into the rough ocean swell.
Once safely back on board for a day or two,
Mervyn gamely agreed to an interview in the
Royal Court Theatre. He and Captain Wells
talked engagingly – often humorously – about
the rescue from their different perspectives,
and Mervyn was glowing in his praise for the
Captain. “To maneuver as the Captain did, in those
conditions at very slow speed, was a remarkable
display of seamanship,” he noted towards the
end of the interview, also praising the crew of the
rescue boat for “as good a demonstration of small
boat seamanship as I’ve ever seen.” We are proud
to have helped. C
On the morning of June 24, as
Queen Mary 2 neared the Loire Estuary,
she received a five-ship naval escort
before her arrival “home.” News helicopters
circled overhead and a flotilla of small boats and
thousands of spectators had gathered to offer
a warm welcome. Captain Wells expertly guided
her into the very narrow dock, La Forme
Joubert, in reverse and under the extra pressure
of being broadcast live on French television!
The next day, Queen Mary 2 set off on the main event
– a race across the Atlantic. She was against four of
the world’s fastest maxi trimarans, from St-Nazaire
Bridge to the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in New
York, and an Airbus A380 flew overhead to send
them on their way. In racing terms, of course, it was
something of a mismatch. Queen Mary 2 arrived
The Bridge celebrations.
On June 22, our flagship left Southampton for St-Nazaire, her first
return to the city of her birth since 2004. It was part of a series of
events on both sides of the Atlantic known as The Bridge, celebrating
the friendship and solidarity between France and the US. Specifically,
it commemorated 100 years since the arrival of the first 14,000 US
troops in St-Nazaire on June 26, 1917 to support the Allied war effort.
at sunrise on the morning of July 1, two and a half
days ahead of the leading yacht, while the slowest
arrived another two days behind. The fastest
yacht averaged 18.6 knots across the Atlantic; our
flagship – the only true ocean liner – has an average
service speed of 23.2 knots, although she can reach
30 knots in the open ocean. C
Two Queen Elizabeths together.
A new point of view.
We are launching four new ships and adding countless new
features across all our brands. So if you are looking
On Thursday July 6, Queen Elizabeth
was in the Moray Firth as part of
her 13-night cruise around the
British Isles when she encountered
another impressive ship with
a rather familiar name.
Also christened by Her Majesty The Queen,
HMS Queen Elizabeth is the largest
warship ever built for the Royal Navy and
able to carry up to 40 aircraft. Affectionately
known as Big Lizzie – she was in the waters
around Scotland’s west coast undertaking her
first sea trials.
Main: Captain Jerry Kyd, Commanding Officer of HMS Queen Elizabeth, greets MV Queen Elizabeth off the coast of Scotland.
“It is a huge honor for myself and the crew of
Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth to meet HMS Queen
Elizabeth for the first time,” said Captain Inger
Klein Thorhauge. “To share the sea with the Royal
Navy’s lead ship of the Queen Elizabeth-class of
aircraft carrier is a pleasure and I would like to take
this opportunity to wish Commander Kyd and his
crew well with their sea trials.” C
