With the help of Joppa’s digital hand-held microscope, you’ll see sand dollars channeling food into their mouths and green sea urchins wiggling tube feet and spines. You’ll help us identify, sort, and feed a wide variety of crabs and mollusks. Watch our horseshoe crab devour sea worms and hermit crabs “beg” for supper. As a special treat, we’ll show you our newest inhabitants, 8-inch-wide sea stars and a young lobster! Children, pm - 5:30 pm. ROUNDTABLE The Civil War Roundtable of the Merrimack will meet at 7:30 PM on Wednesday October 11th at the East Parish Methodist Church, Salisbury Square (route 1), Salisbury, MA. BOOK SALE The Friends of the Library will hold its Fall 2017 Book Sale Wednesday October 11th through Saturday October 14th. The sale will include gently used books for adults, teens and children, as well as audio books, DVDs and puzzles. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12th MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATION: HIKING THE BAY CIRCUIT TRAIL The Bay Circuit is a permanent recreation trail and greenway extending through 37 towns in Eastern Massachusetts, linking parks and open spaces in fifty-seven Boston area communities, from Newburyport to Duxbury and Kingston. The Bay Circuit Trail & Greenway is grassroots and exists because of volunteer efforts and there are various one-time and ongoing ways to get involved. From music to day-hikes to family-friendly events, there’s are so many great activities to explore on the Bay Circuit Trail. Violence, war, racism, poverty, hate, and environmental concerns have left many of us fatigued, fearful, and struggling not to blame judge or shutdown. Moreover, the struggle to relate to and make sense of the violence we experience each day has left many of us disembodied and traumatized. We are searching for solutions and want to actively work to be change makers in our communities but we are feeling shutdown and afraid. Compassion lies at the heart of our effectiveness as change makers but how can we define compassion for ourselves? What are practices and strategies from Buddhadharma we can summon to aid us in facing the violence we see in ourselves and others? How can Dharma inform our spiritual warriorship? How can it inform our allyship? If are overwhelmed by the challenge of living your practice boldly and out loud right now, then join us for this teaching. He completed his graduate studies at Harvard Divinity School and is the co-author of Radical Dharma. Held on the following days: Friday, 10/13; & Friday, 10/27 – all from 9:00 am – 12:30 pm - Join a refuge ranger for a behind the scenes tour of Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge, located in Newington, NH. Participants will have an opportunity to visit areas of the refuge that are not normally open to the public. See a diversity of wildlife habitats while learning how the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is managing this very special landscape for conservation. Consider bringing along binoculars and a camera. The tour is limited to 14 participants; no more than 4 individuals per sign-up. This is a vehicle-based tour, with limited stops on the refuge. This guided program is most appropriate for older teens. and adults. Meet the ranger in the lobby of the Parker River NWR visitor center in Newburyport no later than 9:00 am OR in the Great Bay NWR parking lot in Newington, NH no later than 9:45 am. (Indicate location you prefer at time of registration.) Join Ranger Poole and other members of the refuge’s Photographic Society for this first-of-the-season organized effort to capture unique and compelling sunrise images. We’ll meet on the deck of the visitor contact station at parking lot 1 (on the refuge). Note: In the event that the weather forecast looks particularly “unsupportive,” cancellation will be communicated through the refuge’s Facebook page no later than 10:00 pm on Friday, October 13th.
