THE CAPSULES Occupation seems to be the proper way to create a building for the community. However, we intend occupation not in an obstructive way but rather in a constructive way. The site we choose is the existent Torre Mahou, whose development is managed through a partnership between the municipality and the community. The use of an existing tower and the presence of institution is fundamental in order to make an economically sustainable project. First of all, the municipality builds the tower and owns the 100% of it. Immediately, the community starts occupying the tower. How? Because the workers that build that will be paid not with normal currency but with small capsules where people can live. After the construction, people can get their own capsules by working for the municipality. In order to keep them, they have to work for the sake of the community. In this way municipality can get the money of the investment back, and the community can develop thanks to its members. In the last phase, the community will conquer the whole tower. However, this is not a not reversible process, because in case of need municipality can take some capsules back. The gradual development of the tower can be compared to the construction of a neighbourhood: first step will be the selection of the plot, then it will be provided with infrastructure. Only at the end the houses are built. 38
THE CAPSULES The number of capsules one person can get it is proportional to the work he does for the community. To avoid monopolies, it will also be in relation to the number of children one has. In this case, the members of the community can expand when their family grows, or simply when they need a more comfortable space (for instance a studio). The living room of a normal house would consists in the public path, while kitchen will be shared. Bathrooms and shower are located on the north façade, but the circulation of the capsules is independent from the public path. 39
